Quel tempo è l unico bene solo nostro come scrive Seneca nelle battute iniziali cupe e gravi, delle Lettere a Lucilio.

Piaceri golosi, furtivi, inesauribili.

Traduzione in Inglese di Katerina Karvounari The correlation between free time and a book excludes necessarily the correlation between time and this book. I refer to the newspaper reading and I would describe the reading itself. Apart from the cheerful exceptions, the texts are read like they were liked or not by the audience. In the end, the text is chosen according to what the other would like and not necessarily to the one who has chosen it. Thus, texts that the publishers liked are published and are meant to be preferred and be liked by the wide audience, which however very often declines them. Therefore, the appeal, between heartiness and anger of the publishers themselves, who when they face a book s failure, the wonder: But who liked it?. I don t even want to mention the adventures of the professional readers, who feel dizzy and surprised by the reading itself. I have already dedicated a story to them (and me), in which a publishing advisor looking among a lot of forgotten writings he comes across, without recognizing it, to an unpublished translation of the famous Crime and Punishment. He thinks of the text as of mediocre interest and he just decides to follow the writer in case he matures more. This story has been interpreted as a joke and most probably it is. I believe though that a person that discovers the quality of an important writer feels a fellowship towards others, who instead of enhancing him with their modesty, they end up moderating the light due to their grayness. Free time is the one which is dedicated to the real and not hypothetical reading. We own only time as Seneca states in his Letters to Lucilious. Time, which is corroded by numerous conquests and by what we call second job, where it is third or forth. Time which is taken from us by the time thieves, the depicted disturbers from Horace in the 9 th Satire. To which Kraus dedicated a aphorism: Many people want to kill me. Many people want to have a chat with me for like an hour. From the first ones I am protected by law. Free time for the book means liberating reading from misleading ambitions. 12

The first one is defined by the legal occupation (copyright) of the text. They should be emancipated, I think ideally, from the desire to own a book. Likewise, the love language is misleading us when the verb occupy follows like a direct object a person. Nothing is more fleeting than this way of occupation. However, the insane delirium of our omnipotence put us in a position to choose among the verbs, the less sufficient. It would be better to talk about what a book offers to us, the mutations, which change us and he book. We shouldn t have illusions, however, for how it is formed in a short eternity, like the safe of a bank which is transformed into a crypt. Another pathological heritage, which is transmitted at school, is the worship of completeness. It is the ideal impossible, which gives us the most popular and strict cause in order not to read. We can t forget this character from Lee Masters Cemetery, which said that he had never imagined something so big deciding, as a yound boy he was, to read the entire Britannica Encyclopedia. The aspirations, which according to our knowledge are leading to the inner of our mind and are taking from us the feeling of the free circulation, have a hidden relation to similar works. However, the meaning of a book is never what it is, but what we are after we have read it. The book is alive because it changes us. This is what we tend to forget and first of all I tend to forget. However, it still is the fundamental meaning. The mania of completeness aims at an unrealistic whole in order to suspend the only open space to us, this of partiality. I haven t still visited places in Greece, waiting to read books, which in the end I will never manage to read. I will never visit these places. But the memory of an unknown valley in Crete, which is crossed by ravens is more exciting for me that the ruins of Knossos palace. There are many books which worth reading till the end, winning the competition and the persistence of time. Ok, these few we can read them. For the rest, let s be happy with what we can remember. We do it anyway. But let s be honest, without remorse and feeling guilty. Can we say that we don t know Athens just because we haven t visited it? Or that we don t know Rome just because we haven t visited 13

the museums? A scenery, as we see it though a train s window, could leave a trace at our memory, where some group common visits reminds us of boring touristic guides. What is important in a book is to become an experience and experience is not measured according to quantity, but according to how intense it was. The completeness sacrifices the whole of a part towards the inapplicable Whole. We insist on reading some books just because we try desperately to finish them. Indeed, the memory of book lovers is rich in brief meetings and random relationships, and more alive than deep relationships full of boredom. They learn from several opinions, decided by feelings in this life which we call mysteriously sensible. The diversions of the completeness contribute to the violent imperative need, which I would like to describe as economy of poverty, typical for a war period: don t let anything on the plate. It would be like forcing someone who eats to retreat in the choice of a meal. It looks like the swallowing must be necessarily completed and it is necessary in order to express a crisis, while we know that, for example, when it comes to wine, only a ship can be enough. Additionally, you shouldn t read books just to judge them but to enjoy them. Longanesi used to simulate the literature critics when they criticized a text with the policemen when they interrogate a suspect. Along with the worship of completeness is the worship of Introduction. School has made us to postpone the reading of a brilliant book for another one more mediocre. The result is to stop reading the first one and never start the second. Boredom makes us many times to change route. Groucho Marx asked a driver to investigate the Joyce s Ulysses, who later questioned himself in Gilbert s book, by saying that the comment demanded more explanations from the text. Another picture of the bureaucratic confession of a book is this of the assignment appliance (tool). I let your imagination to rate the attractiveness of the word tool. And the popularity of the word assignment, very important in Italy, which doesn t need choices. Indeed, the propaganda of books the first to question the value of what it has to offer repeats with obsession the 14

obvious. After all, it is better the definition of tool which was given to the breast for nutrition and pleasure, because in the end the offer of goods hasn t broaden. There are professional ways for someone to read them. Everybody knows them, otherwise we wouldn t have read all the books we have read. Go on with the researches, with the to several foreshortenings, with the sequences and conclusions. Free time is not excluded to confront you with recourse. I am convinces, without being a member of a cult or a sect that even only the presence of books at a library, has an effect on their owners. Reading is an art which is acquired with the same way as writing. I am trying to teach it, but according to the French meaning apprendre, which means at the same time learning, it is an art which never stops to learn. The feeling of reading must be conceived as happiness, not as incorporation: there! Childhood that all as adults must find. The search for books must be done with pleasure and not as an obligation. Inexhaustible, greedy, stealth pleasure. Love voracity, not temperance. You can read till the end few books within time, which won t always be the best. Buy book massively and read simultaneously. Discover polygamy. Of course, monogamy leaves us with unspeakable joy, but maybe therefore most of the times it is not told and violations are preferred. Sometimes a fleeting contact is more desirable than coexistence. A book can offer you the best only in some of its parts. Try to find them and stand at them. I don t want to suggest you instability with this, but mobility. Free time for a book means: reading which is subtracted by any cause. It means read the present. I am talking about an experience which almost always excluded. In order to reach it and come closer you must forget the professional reading and bibliophile. I believe that bibliophile is included in a gene which transmits the craving and the desire for knowing the alphabet. In more serious occasions, in which I believe this is it, it is the sensuality which swallows the universe through books. But here we have a cause, which even if it is irresponsible, it stays at its position. The weariness of Mallarmé, who 15

has read many books but has not managed to finish them all, has a result in the bibliophile himself to be despaired. Like Nietzsche explains: Therefore the dream for someone to wake up in the morning and discover happiness by walking and leaving books behind. To not read for (learning more, having fun, writing, thinking, talking, getting away, remembering). In the contemporary technical civilization Heschel has written - we consume time in order to get space. But time he adds is the heart of existence. I think that s the meaning of the phrase Diogenes said to Alexander when he stood in front of him: Move, you are hiding the sun from me. A phrase has been interpreted as the desire to delimit the glory of Alexander the Great. I doubt though that Diogenes, comparing him to the sun, he wanted to underestimate him. The contrary. The emphasis strikes the completed and eternal meaning of present. The figure of Alexander hides the sun and takes the light away from Diogenes. Reading the present, we take part in everything is happening. Reading is like feeling the innerness, like discussing with the writer but also with ourselves. A big art collector has told me that his bigger pleasure was, of course, owning all these pieces of art but his bigger satisfaction was that he could study them in peace whenever he wanted to. He didn t have any other goal. Like the monk that prays not because he wants to acquire or ask but because he is thankful he prays. Reading in the present he would have discovered the most important feeling of time and reading. I am using hypothesis because it is a difficult destination. But I have started observing it. Maybe, when I will become twohundredfortytwo, I will reach it. I note down also that reading in the present, I finally see the congruity of happiness and dal Greco Inglese di Katerina Karvounari

Comprate libri in massa e leggeteli contemporaneamente.
