4 FACE-TO-FACE Mr. Andreas Petasis is the new face in the Business Department. He graduated from the University of Sunderland with a Bachelor in Business Administration and then from Maastricht School of Management with an M.B.A. in Marketing and Management. He is in the final year of his Doctorate Degree from Adam Smith University in the US, with a specialization in Strategic Marketing. Moreover, he is a member of the Association of International Accountants (AIA). He worked for seven years in Ayios Dometios Cooperative Savings Bank, as an officer in the Administration and Accounting Department. How does the teaching experience seem so far? What do you like the most as faculty? Lecturing would be what I enjoy the most. However, what I have found at Americanos College is an organization whose culture is characterized by professionalism and effectiveness. Great interaction between staff members and different functions, all aiming towards highest possible quality. What would you like to offer as a faculty? a My aim is to be a part of a team that contributes to the success of this academic institution. Conducting research in the field of my expertise will help me become a better academic, and thus to support and assist in the fulfillment of the mission and objectives of Americanos College. Any specific goals in life? A successful academic career, contributing to the welfare of Americanos College and of the society in general. And of course to foster a good family, providing them with the values and beliefs necessary to be affiliated and respected by their surroundings. Much better than I would expect. I find it very interesting and challenging not only because of Any hobbies/ interests? the lecturing, but also because knowledge should be accompanied with everyday experiences, and the challenge is to communicate these experiences to others. What I enjoy the most among many hobbies is playing football. However, when there is spare time, I could enjoy a good movie, or meet with friends for a couple of drinks. Any specific advice you would like to give to Americanos College students? They should try to earn as match as possible in terms of knowledge and skills, since it can be the major tool in succeeding professionally and personally. Moreover, they should try to enjoy at the most their college years by participating in social events; Nicosia has a lot to offer, but Ayia Napa can be a recommended place to visit, on their free time. Throughout their studies, they should always have in mind, that, no pain - no gain.
5 ANTIRACISM FUTSAL TOURNAMENT An antiracism futsal tournament was organized by Americanos College at a futsal court in Aglantzia. The tournament was very successful with the student teams of Nigeria, Morocco and Nepal being the winning teams respectively with gold medal s awarded to the Nigerian team, silver medals to the Moroccan student team and bronze to the Nepalese. THE WORLD AT A GLANCE Warming could bring 1930s havoc (CNN online) Climate change will devastate the global economy on a scale of the two world wars and the depression of the 1930s if left unchecked, a top economist has warned. The report's main argument is that the benefits of coordinated action around the world to tackle global warming will greatly outweigh any financial costs. UK Prime Minister Tony Blair said if no action was taken, climate change could cost the world up to 20 percent of global gross domestic product (GDP) each year. Curry spice help for arthritis (BBC online) Extract of a spice used in curry could help prevent rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis, US research suggests. Turmeric has been used for centuries in Asian medicine to treat inflammatory disorders and its extract can be found in western dietary supplements. Now lab work by University of Arizona researchers, in Arthritis & Rheumatism, shows just how the spice's curcuminoid extracts have a therapeutic effect.
