1 Our Fathers Among the Saints, the Great Hierarchs and Ecumenical Teachers Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, and John Chrysostom Τῶν ἐν Ἁγίοις Πατέρων ἡµῶν Μεγάλων Ἱεραρχῶν καί Οἰκουµενικῶν Διδασκάλων, Βασιλείου τοῦ Μεγάλου, Γρηγορίου τοῦ Θεολόγου καί Ἰωάννου τοῦ Χρυσοστόµου January 30 Each of these three saints have their own feast day: Saint Basil the Great, January 1, Saint Gregory the Theologian, January 25, and Saint John Chrysostom, January 27. This combined feast day, January 30, was instituted in the eleventh century during the reign of Emperor Alexios Comnenus. At one time a debate arose among the people concerning who of the three is the greatest? Some extolled Basil because of his purity and courage; others extolled Gregory for his unequaled depth and lofty mind in theology; still others extolled Chrysostom because of his eloquence and clarity in expounding the Faith. Thus some were called Basilians, others Gregorgians, and the third were called Johannites. This debate was settled by Divine Providence to the benefit of the Church and to an even greater glory of the three saints. Bishop John of Euchaita (June 14) had a vision in a dream: At first, all three of these saints appeared to him separately in great glory and indescribable beauty, and after that all three appeared together. They said to him, As you see, we are one in God and there is nothing contradictory in us; neither is there a first or a second among us. The saints also advised Bishop John that he write a common service for them and to order a common feast day of celebration. Following this wonderful vision, the debate was settled in this manner: January 30 would be designated as the common feast of these three hierarchs. In Greece this is not only an ecclesiastical feast but also a national school holiday. 1

Wherefore, Orthodoxy is preserved to the ends of the earth, superbly encompassed by their divine ordinances, and held together as one. Stichos 6 For He has made His mercy to prevail over us, and the truth of the Lord abides to the ages. With voices raised in song, let us praise the instruments of the Spirit, clarions of truth, and preachers of the Word; let us entreat them who are privileged before God to ask that enduring peace be granted to the universe, and forgiveness to us. They will govern nations and rule over peoples, and the Lord will reign over them to the ages. Those who trust in Him will understand truth, and the faithful will abide with Him in love, because grace and mercy are upon His elect, and He watches over His holy ones. ἐπισκοπῆς αὐτῶν ἀναλάµψουσι, καὶ ὡς σπινθῆρες ἐν καλάµῃ διαδραµοῦνται. Apolitikion of the Saints Tone 1 The three great stars of the three-sunned Godhead, who have set the universe on fire with the rays of their divine doctrines; the honey-flowing rivers of wisdom, who have inundated the entire creation with springs of divine knowledge: basil the Great, and Gregory the Theologian, together with illustrious John of the golden-speaking tongue; let all men who love their words assemble and honor them with hymns of praise, for they always intercede with the Trinity for our sake.
