2 ΤΗΕ EPISTLE: The reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 12:27-31; 13:1 8 Brethren, you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, then healers, helpers, administrators, speakers in various kinds of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? But earnestly desire the higher gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way. If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing. Love is patient and kind; love is not jealous or boastful; it is not arrogant or rude. Love does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrong, but rejoices in the right. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. Ο ΑΠΟΣΤΟΛΟΣ: Αγίων Αναργύρων Κοσμά και Δαμιανού. Αποστ. Ανάγνωσμα: Α Κορ. ιβ 27- ιγ 8 Αδελφοί, εσείς όλοι μαζί αποτελείτε το σώμα του Χριστού, και είστε μέλη του, ο καθένας σας χωριστά. Γι αυτό στην εκκλησία ο Θεός τοπο-θέτησε τον καθένα στην ορισμένη του θέση: πρώτα έρχονται οι απόστολοι, σε δεύτερη θέση οι προφήτες σε τρίτη οι διδάσκαλοι, και ακολουθούν οι θαυματουργοί, οι θεραπευτές, αυτοί που παραστέκον-ται στις ανάγκες, οι διαχειριστές, όσοι λαλούν διάφορα είδη γλωσ-σών. Δεν είναι όλοι απόστολοι ούτε όλοι προφήτες ούτε όλοι διδά-σκαλοι. Δεν είναι όλοι θαυματουργοί ούτε όλοι θεραπευτές ούτε όλοι λαλούν γλώσσες κι ούτε όλοι ξέρουν πώς να τις εξηγούν. Ο ζήλος σας, μάλιστα, πρέπει να στρέφεται προς τα σημαντικότερα χα-ρίσματα. Σας δείχνω κι έναν πολύ ανώτερο ακόμα δρόμο: Αν μπορώ να λαλώ όλες τις γλώσσες των ανθρώπων, ακόμα και των αγγέλων, αλλά δεν έχω αγάπη για τους άλλους, οι λόγοι μου ακούγονται σαν ήχος χάλκινης καμπάνας ή σαν κυμβάλου αλαλαγμού. Κι αν έχω της προφητείας το χάρισμα κι όλα κατέχω τα μυστήρια κι όλη τη γνώση, κι αν έχω ακόμα όλη την πίστη έτσι που να μετακινώ βουνά, αλλά δεν έχω αγάπη, είμαι ένα τίποτα. Κι αν ακόμα μοιράσω στους φτωχούς όλα μου τα υπάρχοντα. Κι αν παραδώσω στη φωτιά το σώμα μου για να καεί, αλλά δεν έχω αγάπη, σε τίποτα δε μ ωφελεί. Εκείνος που αγαπάει έχει μακροθυμία, έχει και καλοσύνη εκεί-νος που αγαπάει δε ζηλοφθονεί εκείνος που αγαπάει δεν κομπάζει ούτε περηφανεύεται, είναι ευπρεπής, δεν είναι εγωιστής ούτε ευερέθιστος ξεχνάει το κακό που του έχουν κάνει, δε χαίρεται για το στραβό που γίνεται, αλλά μετέχει στη χαρά για το σωστό. Εκείνος που αγαπάει, όλα τα ανέχεται σε όλα εμπιστεύεται, για όλα ελπίζει, όλα τα υπομένει. Ποτέ η αγάπη δε θα πάψει να υπάρχει. THE GOSPEL: 5th Sunday of Matthew The Gospel According to Matthew 8:28-34; 9:1 At that time, when Jesus came to the country of the Gergesenes, two demoniacs met him, coming out of the tombs, so fierce that no one would pass that way. And behold, they cried out, "What have you to do with us, O Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?" Now a herd of many swine was feeding at some distance from them. And the demons begged him, "If you cast us out, send us away into the herd of swine." And he said to them, "Go." So they came out and went into the swine; and behold, the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea, and perished in the waters. The herdsmen fled, and going into the city they told everything, and what had happened to the demoniacs. And behold, all the city came out to meet Jesus; and when they saw him, they begged him to leave their neighborhood. And getting into a boat he crossed over and came to his own city. 2

3 ΤΟ ΕΥΑΓΓΕΛΙΟΝ: Κυριακή Ε Ματθαίου, Ευαγγ. Ανάγνωσμα: Ματθ. η 28 θ 1 Εκείνο τον καιρό, ήρθε ο Ιησούς στην περιοχή των Γεργεσηνών όπου τον συνάντησαν δύο δαιμονισμένοι που έρχονταν από τα μνήματα, τόσο φοβεροί, που κανένας δεν τολμούσε να περάσει από κείνον το δρόμο. Και με κραυγές του είπαν: «Τι δουλειά έχεις εσύ μ εμάς Υιέ του Θεού; Ήλθες εδώ για να μας βασανίσεις πριν την ώρα μας;» Μακριά απ αυτούς έβοσκε ένα κοπάδι από πολλούς χοίρους. Και οι δαίμονες τον παρακαλούσαν λέγοντας: «Αν είναι να μας διώξεις, άφησέ μας να πάμε στο κοπάδι των χοίρων». Και εκείνος τους είπε: «Πηγαίνετε». Αυτοί βγήκαν και πήγαν στο κοπάδι των χοίρων. Και όλο το κοπάδι των χοίρων όρμησε και γκρεμίστηκε στη λίμνη και πνίγηκαν μέσα στα νερά. Τότε οι βοσκοί έφυγαν, πήγαν στην πόλη και ανάγγειλαν όλα τα συμβάντα και ό,τι έγινε με τους δαιμονισμένους. Βγήκε τότε όλη η πόλη να συναντήσει τον Ιησού, κι όταν τον είδαν, τον παρακάλεσαν να φύγει από την περιοχή τους. Ο Ιησούς επιβιβάστηκε στο πλοίο, διέσχισε τη λίμνη και ήρθε στην πόλη του. 5 Τὶ σημαίνει ἡ φράση, Αἰωνία ἡ μνήμη Σὲ ταλαιπωρεῖ τὸ ὅτι δὲν ξέρεις τὴ σημασία αὐτῶν τῶν λέξεων, ποὺ ἄκουγες πολλὲς φορὲς καὶ ὁ ἴδιος ἔλεγες ἐπάνω ἀπὸ τοὺς νεκρούς. Καὶ καλὰ κάνεις ποὺ ρωτᾶς. Ὅσο καλύτερα γνωρίζει ὁ ἄνθρωπος τὴν ἀρχαία καὶ καλὴ ὀρθόδοξη πίστη μας, τόσο καὶ περισσότερο τὴν ἀγαπᾶ. «Αἰωνία ἡ μνήμη» σημαίνει: αἰώνια νὰ ὑπάρχει ἡ μνήμη γιὰ σένα. Ἄκουσα μιὰ φορὰ πὼς κάποιος στὸν ἐπικήδειο λόγο ἐπάνω ἀπὸ τὸν νεκρὸ φώναξε: «αἰωνία σου ἡ μνήμη στὴ γῆ!» Παραξενεύθηκα σὲ μιὰ τόσο λανθασμένη ἑρμηνεία τῆς πίστης μας. Μὰ μπορεῖ κάτι νὰ εἶναι αἰώνιο στὴ γῆ, ὅπου ὅλα περνοῦν βιαστικὰ σὰν προσκεκλημένοι σὲ γάμο; Ὄντως, δὲν εὐχόμαστε στὸν νεκρὸ ἐντελῶς μηδαμινὸ πλοῦτο, ὅταν τοῦ εὐχόμαστε νὰ τὸν μνημονεύουν σ αὐτὸν τὸν κόσμο, ὁ ὁποῖος καὶ ὁ ἴδιος πλησιάζει στὸ τέλος του; Ἀλλὰ ἂς ποῦμε πὼς τὸ ὄνομα κάποιου μνημονεύεται στὴ γῆ ἕως τὸ τέλος τοῦ χρόνου τί κερδίζει αὐτὸς ἀπ αὐτό, ἐὰν ἡ μνήμη του στὰ οὐράνια ἔχει ξεχαστεῖ; Τὸ σωστὸ εἶναι νὰ ἐπιθυμοῦμε τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ νεκροῦ νὰ μνημονεύεται αἰώνια στὴν αἰωνιότητα, στὴν αἰώνια ζωὴ καὶ στὸ Βασίλειο τοῦ Θεοῦ. Τοῦτο καὶ εἶναι τὸ νόημα τῶν λέξεων «αἰωνία σου ἡ μνήμη». Μιὰ φορὰ καυχήθηκαν οἱ μαθητὲς τοῦ Χριστοῦ στὸν Δάσκαλό τους λέγοντας: «Κύριε, καὶ τὰ δαιμόνια ὑποτάσσεται ἡμῖν ἐν τῷ ὀνόματί σου» (Λουκ. 10,17). Καὶ ὁ Κύριος τοὺς ἀπάντησε νὰ μὴν χαίρονται γι αὐτὸ ἀλλά: «Χαίρετε δὲ ὅτι τὰ ὀνόματα ὑμῶν ἐγράφη ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς» (Λουκ. 10,20), δηλαδὴ νὰ χαίρονται ἐπειδὴ τὰ ὀνόματά τους εἶναι γνωστὰ καὶ τὰ θυμοῦνται καὶ τὰ μνημονεύουν στὸ Οὐράνιο Βασίλειο τοῦ φωτὸς καὶ τῆς ζωῆς. Στὴν Ἁγία Γραφὴ συχνὰ λέγεται πὼς τὰ ὀνόματα τῶν δικαίων θὰ εἶναι γραμμένα στὸ βιβλίο τῶν ζωντανῶν, ἐνῶ τὰ ὀνόματα τῶν ἁμαρτωλῶν θὰ σβηστοῦν καὶ θὰ ξεχαστοῦν. Ἀπὸ τὴν ἱστορία περὶ τοῦ πλουσίου καὶ τοῦ Λαζάρου βλέπουμε ὅτι ὁ Κύριος λέει τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ Λαζάρου μὲ τὸ ὁλοκάθαρό Του στόμα, ἀλλὰ ἀποσιωπᾶ τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ ἄδικου πλουσίου. Ὁ Λάζαρος, σημαίνει, ὅτι μπῆκε στὸ Βασίλειο τῶν Οὐρανῶν, καὶ ἔλαβε τὴν αἰώνια ζωὴ καὶ τὴν αἰώνια μνήμη, ἐνῶ ὁ ἁμαρτωλὸς πλούσιος ἔχασε καὶ τὸ βασίλειο καὶ τὴ ζωὴ καὶ τὸ ὄνομα. Στὴ θεϊκὴ ἐπιστήμη καμιὰ φορὰ τὸ ὄνομα ταυτίζεται μὲ τὸν ἄνθρωπο. Στὴν Ἀποκάλυψη γράφεται: «Καὶ ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐγένετο σεισμὸς μέγας, καὶ ἀπεκτάνθησαν ἐν τῷ σεισμῷ ὀνόματα ἀνθρώπων χιλιάδες ἑπτὰ» (Ἀπ. 11,13). Ὑπὸ τὸν σεισμὸ τῆς γῆς πρέπει νὰ καταλάβουμε μεγάλους πειρασμούς, στοὺς ὁποίους οἱ ἑπτὰ χιλιάδες ἀνθρώπων ὑπέκυψαν, ἀποστάτησαν ἀπὸ τὸν Χριστὸ καὶ ἔχασαν τὶς ψυχές τους. Τοῦτο σημαίνει ὅτι δὲν καταστράφηκαν μόνο τὰ σώματά τους αὐτὸ εἶναι ἐλάχιστης σημασίας- ἀλλὰ οἱ ψυχὲς καὶ τὰ ὀνόματα. Τὰ ὀνόματά τους στὴν αἰωνιότητα ἐκμηδενίστηκαν καὶ σβήστηκαν ἀπὸ τὸ βιβλίο τῶν ζωντανῶν. Ὅποιος ἐπιθυμεῖ ἀθάνατη μνήμη στὴν αἰωνιότητα, ἐπιθυμεῖ εὐαγγελικὸ πράγμα. Ἐὰν κάποιος ἐπιθυμεῖ ἀθάνατο ὄνομα στὴ γῆ, θέλει ματαιόδοξο πράγμα. Νὰ ξέρεις ὅτι πολλοὶ οἱ ὁποῖοι ἀθόρυβα καὶ χωρὶς νὰ τοὺς προσέξουν πέρασαν αὐτὴ τὴ ζωή, ἀπέκτησαν ἀθάνατο ὄνομα σ ἐκεῖνο τὸν κόσμο. Νὰ σκέπτεσαι περὶ αὐτοῦ, ἀδελφὲ Μελέτιε, καὶ ὁ Θεὸς θὰ σοῦ ἀποκαλύψει ἀκόμα πολλά. Καὶ ὅταν ἀκούσεις γιὰ τὸ δικό μου θάνατο, πὲς στὴν προσευχή σου: «Αἰωνία του ἡ μνήμη»! 8 Διαβάζοντας κανείς την συγκεκριμένη ευαγγελική περικοπή του Ευαγγελιστού Ματθαίου βλέπει την απαλλάγη από τους δαίμονες δύο δαιμονισμένων ανθρώπων τους οποίους βρίσκει ο Κύριος Ιησούς Χριστός στο δρόμο του. Διαπιστώνετε πόσο σκοτεινό και φθονερό είναι το έργο του διαβόλου,των δαιμόνων. Όταν εγκλωβιστεί μέσα στον άνθρωπο τον καταστρέφει και τον οδηγεί σε πράξεις αισχρές,πραξείς μίσους και αλαζονείας. Παρ όλα αυτά υπαρχεί ο Ιησούς Χριστός που είναι παροχέας λύτρωσης,ίασης,αγάπης και φάρος της πνευματικής μας ζωής. Στο άκουσμα και στην παρουσία του ονόματος του Κυρίου μας ο διάβολος διακατέχεται απο τρόμο και φόβο γιατί μόνο ο Σωτήρας Χριστός μπορεί να νικήσει τον διάβολο και να καταστρέψει τα έργα του και φυσικά εμείς μόνον αυτόν επικαλούμαστε για να μην έχουν επιρροή οι δαίμονες στην ψυχή και στο σώμα μας.μέσα απο την παρούσα ευαγγελική περικοπή θα δράξωμεν την ευκαιρία να αναφερθούμε γενικά στους δαίμονες και τα έργα τους και πως αντιμετωπίζονται στην ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία μας. Μελετώντας κανείς το τι διδάσκει η Εκκλησία μας για τους δαίμονες θα παρατηρήσει ότι δέχεται τους δαίμονες ως εκπεσόντες αγγέλους.και με αυτό τον τρόπο εντάσσονται και αυτοί στα δημιουργήματα του Θεού.Συνεπάγεται δε ότι ως εκ τούτου η Εκκλησία απορρίπτει την αντίληψη του συστήματος της Διαρχίας ότι τα όντα αυτά προέρχονται από την αρχή του κακού, η οποία βαίνει παράλληλα προς την αρχή του αγαθού,δηλαδή τον Θεό. Η παρουσία των δαιμόνων στην ζωή του ανθρώπου ερμηνεύεται ποικιλότροπα από διάφορα κινήματα αλλά και συστήματα όπως λόγου χάρη τα πανθειστικά συστήματα αρνήθηκαν την ύπαρξη των δαιμόνων,επίσης,οι ορθολογιστές ερμήνευσαν την ύπαρξη των δαιμόνων ως ιστορίες φαντασίας και δεισιδαιμονίας προερχόμενες από τις τάξεις του Ιουδαικού λαού, στις οποίες δήθεν συμμορφώθηκε και ο Ιησούς σύμφωνα με την θεωρία της προσαρμογής. Φαίνεται δε ότι η θεωρία περι δαιμόνων των Εβραίων επηρεάστηκε σε μεγάλο βαθμό από τις περσικές διδασκαλίες τις οποίες και δανείστηκαν κατα την διάρκεια της βαβυλώνιας αιχμαλωσίας. Έτσι λοιπόν ενστερνιζόμενοι την συγκεκριμένη άποψη θεωρούσαν ότι τόσο ο Ιησούς όσο και οι απόστολοι δεν είχαν ανεπτυγμένη θεολογία περι των δαιμόνων και δανείστηκαν και αυτοί τις λαικές αυτές παραστάσεις. Ο τελευταίος ισχυρισμός αναμφίβολα καταρρίπτεται μιας και είναι απαράδεκτος επειδή δίνει την πεπλανημένη εντύπωση ότι ο Ιησούς Χριστός ενώ είναι η πηγή της αλήθειας να δίνεται εικόνα της αναληθείας και του ψεύδους στο πρόσωπο του. Το να αρνηθεί κανείς την ύπαρξη των δαιμόνων σημαίνει άμεσα την απογύμνωση του απολυτρωτικού έργου του Κυρίου, που απώτερος σκοπός του έργου αυτού ήταν η εκπλήρωση του πρωτευαγγελίου και βέβαια η αποδέσμευση του ανθρώπου από τα δεσμά αλλά και τα επώδυνα πλοκάμια του διαβόλου ο οποίος μισώντας τον άνθρωπο που ζούσε στην μακαριότητα συντέλεσε στην πτώση του με όλες τις δυσσάρεστες συνεπειές της. Την ύπαρξη των δαιμόνων μαρτυρούν και η Αγία Γραφή και η Ιερά Παράδοση. Ενδεικτικά θα μνημονεύσουμε ορισμένες σχετικές μαρτυρίες. Στο βιβλίο της Γενέσεως γίνεται αναφορά στην ύπαρξη και την δράση του διαβόλου όπου με την μορφή του όφεως πέτυχε την πτώση των πρωτοπλάστων του Αδάμ και της Εύας.Το Δευτερονόμιον αναφέρετε στους Ισραηλίτες ότι «έθυσαν δαιμονίοις και ου τω Θεώ». Ξεκάθαρη είναι και η αναφορά στο βιβλίο του Ιώβ για τον διάβολο όπου «Και εγένετο ως η ημέρα αύτη και ιδού ήλθον και άγγελοι του Θεού παραστήσαι ενώπιον του Κυρίου,και ο διάβολος ήλθε μετ αυτών.το βιβλίο της Σοφίας Σολομώντος 8

9 «φθόνω δε διαβόλου θάνατος εισήλθεν εις τον κόσμον». Αναρίθμητες βέβαια είναι και οι αναφορές περι διαβόλου και στην Καινή Διαθήκη. Ολόκληρο το εργό και η διαδασκαλία του Κυρίου έχουν ένα και μοναδικό σκοπό τον αφοπλισμό η και καλύτερα την απαλλαγή του σατανά απο την ζωή του ανθρώπου και την συντριβή της τυραννίας του.ο Ιησούς υφίσταται τους πειρασμούς από τον διάβολο στην έρημο. Ο σατανάς έρχεται και απομακρύνει τον θείο λόγο ο οποίος σπάρθηκε στους ανθρώπους και επιπροσθέτως σπέρνει ζιζάνια αμαρτίας και πονηρίας,ταλαιπωρεί τον άνθρωπο όπως για παράδειγμα τους ανθρώπους στην σημερινή ευαγγελική περικοπή. Αναφορές για τους δαίμονες βρίσκουμε και στην Ιερά Παράδοση. Άρα χωρίς οποιαδήποτε αμφιβολία η διδασκαλία περί δαιμόνων ανήκει στην πίστη της Εκκλησίας. Οι δαίμονες δηλαδή δημιουργήθηκαν και αυτοί απο τον Θεό,υπάγονταν στην αγγελική τάξη και είχαν ως έργο και αποστολή τους τον αίνο του Θεού και την εκπλήρωση των εντολών του. Ως λογικά όντα είχαν βασικό χαρακτηριστικό το αυτεξούσιο,ως δημιουργήματα είχαν τρεπτή φύση.είχαν δε την δυνατότητα να στερεωθούν και να παραμείνουν στην παντοτινή παραδείσια κατάσταση η να εκπέσουν από αυτή. Ως αιτίες έκπτωσης των δαιμόνων απο τα αγγελικά τάγματα προσδιορίζονται η υπερηφάνεια,η έπαρση,η αλαζονεία,η ανταρσία.αδιαμφισβήτητο γεγονός της επάρσεως του διαβόλου είναι ο φθονερός τρόπος με τον οποίο προέτρεψε τους πρωτοπλάστους να γευθούν τον απαγορευμένο καρπό με την ακόλουθη επισήμανση: «ή δ άν ημέρα φάγητε απ αυτού,διανοιχθήσονται υμών οι οφθαλμοί και έσεσθε ως θεοί». Ο Μέγας Αθανάσιος τονίζει ότι ο σατανάς κυριευμένος απο εγωιστικό πνεύμα ισχυρίζεται τα εξής: «Αναβήσομαι και θήσομαι τον θρόνον μου ενώπιον του Θεού και έσομαι ομοίος τώ υψίστω». Χρονικά δεν μπορούμε να προσδιορίσουμε την πτώση των αγγέλων και το πότε δημιουργήθηκε η τάξη των δαιμόνων αφού στερούμαστε ελλείψεως αγιογραφικής βάσεως.οι άγγελοι που είχαν πέσει,δηλαδή οι δαίμονες στερήθηκαν τη δυνατότητα μετάνοιας.ο Μ.Βασίλειος επισημαίνει πως είναι επιβαρυντικό στοιχείο της αδυναμίας μετάνοιας των δαιμόνων το γεγονός ότι ο διάβολος οδήγησε τον άνθρωπο στο να παρακούσει τον Θεό και να οδηγηθεί στην πτώση του την στιγμή που αποτελούσε την κορωνίδα τής επίγειας δημιουργίας.αξίζει να σημειωθεί ότι μέσα από την Έ Οικουμενική Σύνοδο(553) η Εκκλησία καταδίκασε τον Σατανά και τη διδασκαλία για την αποκατάσταση των πάντων. Το έργο των δαιμόνων φυσικά δεν μπορεί να χαρακτηριστεί ως έργο αγαθό και ευεργετικό για τον άνθρωπο αφού έρχεται σε αντενέργεια στο Θέλημα του Θεού,στην παρεμπόδιση του απολυτρωτικού έργου του Κυρίου μας και η αντίδραση στην οικειοποίηση της σωτηρίας εκ μέρους του ανθρώπου.η εναντιότητα αυτή του διαβόλου κατά του ανθρώπου κατά τον Μ.Βασίλειοδείχνει την έχθρα και το μίσος του διαβόλου κατά του Θεού. Οι δαίμονες είναι εμφανές ότι προσπαθούν να παραπλανήσουν τους ευσεβείς χρησιμοποιώντας κάθε πονηρό μέσο με απώτερο αποτέλεσμα ο άνθρωπος να ριχτεί στον βούρκο της αμαρτίας,της απιστίας και της θεομαχίας. Έτσι ο διάβολος έχει πάντα στο στόχαστρο τον άνθρωπο που ζεί μαζί με άλλους αλλά και όταν βρίσκεται σε απομόνωση. Το έργο των δαιμόνων συντελείται κατά θεία παραχώρηση. Αυτό το δικαίωμα ας το πούμε που παραχωρείται από τον πανάγαθο Θεό στους δαίμονες εχεί ως σκοπό την δοκιμασία απο την μιά του ανθρώπου για την εκπλήρωση της σωτηριώδους και πνευματικής του τελειώσεως και απο την άλλη σαν τιμωρία για τις αμαρτίες και την καταπάτηση του θείου θελήματος από αυτόν. Η δράση των δαιμόνων δεν επικεντρώνεται μόνο σε ορισμένους ανθρώπους που είναι μακριά από τον Θεό αλλά και σε εκείνους που είναι προσανατολισμένοι στο θέλημα του Θεού. Σημειώνουμε δε ότι και η μαγεία θεωρείται δαιμονολατρεία και η Εκκλησία την καταδικάζει δεδομένου του ότι να επικλίνεται κανείς τους δαίμονες σημαίνει άρνηση του αληθινού Θεού. Η εν Ιησού Χριστώ αποκάλυψη αποτελεί το βασικό,ουσιαστικό και αποφασιστικό μέσο με το οποίο ο άνθρωπος μπορεί με την βοήθεια του καλού ποιμένα να αντιπαλέψει πρός τις δυνάμεις του σκότους και τις διάφορες ενέργειες του διαβόλου ο οποίος «ως λέων ωρυόμενος περιπατεί ζητών τίνα καταπίη».ο καθένας μας που ζεί κατά το ορθόδοξο χριστιανικό πρότυπο διαθέτει την δύναμη να ρθεί αντιμέτωπος με τον διάβολο και να τον νικήσει.η πίστη και η αισιοδοξία του ανθρώπου,συνδεδεμένες με τη θεία βοήθεια και συναντίληψη,είναι απαραίτητες για τη νικηφόρα πορεία κατά των δαιμόνων. 9

10 Mystery of the Heart When you read in Scripture, the Kingdom of God is within us (Lk 17:21), what does this mean to you? The Church Fathers refer to this place within also as the "Heart." It is in this place that God has fashioned that God abides so He can manifest Himself through each person. The role of the Church is to help us discover this deep place of the "Heart" that is also the center of our soul. It is the place within where we wage a battle for our salvation. This is the target of all our ascetic efforts. We want it to be made pure. Jesus has told us that the pure of Heart will see God. As we seek to become united with God, to overcome our sinfulness, we desire that our soul, its "Heart" be ignited by His grace. Jesus told us, You shall love the Lord your God will all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. (Matt 12:30) So, what does this mean? Saint Gregory Palamas says the heart is the body of our body, a place where our whole being becomes like a knot. When our mind and heart are united we have only one thought the thought of God. All of our desire is focused on God. When we give our whole mind, our whole heart to God we are totally focused on Him. In this stance we receive His grace and are given the ability to do His will. In this way we attain what Apostle Paul meant when he said that Christ is formed in us (Gal 4:19). We become whole and are perfected. We can never wholly contain God in our heart as He is infinite, something greater than our heart. He makes it a dwelling place, a temple of His divinity reflecting His image in us. When our whole heart and mind are turned to God we become holy, enlightened, "the light of the world." It is in this way that God directs our life, fulfilling the purpose He has for us. Reflect on the following passage from the Sermon on the Mount where Jesus told His disciple the following: You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In this same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 5:14-16) We want to purify our heart so that is shines, becomes a great light, enabling us to take action in the world in a way that glorifies God, that encourages others to purify their hearts and to seek God with their whole heart and mind and soul. In this way the whole world can become a great light. What is it that keeps us from becoming this light that Jesus speaks about? Our reality is that we are not able to give our whole heart and mind to God but instead are distracted by our passions, our earthly desires. We are not living with a focus on the "Heart" but on the things of this created world siphoning our attention away from God. Because of our fallen nature we have within us also the tendency to sin. As Paul says, "all have sinned and come short of the Glory of God." (Rom 3:23) How are we to proceed? We must do as the prodigal son, recognize our condition and seek to return to our father's house which is within. We must uproot our sinful tendencies so that God's commandments will become alive in our heart instead of our passions and worldly desires. This is a path of return that is difficult. There is only one way and that is to master our situation with God's help so we can follow the divine commandments. Archimandrite Zacharias writes, There is no greater misfortune than that of an insensible and verified heart that is unable to distinguish between the luminous Way of God's Providence and the gloomy confusion of the ways of the world." Difficult, yes, but we know it is possible. We have an all powerful ally, God. His aim is for our "Heart" to become His temple. He says to us, "Behold, I stand at the door and knock: If anyone hears my voice, and opens the door, I will come to him, and will sup with him, and he with Me? (Rev 3"20). When we knock and 10

11 the door is opened we discover the greatest of miracles. Our heart becomes united with the Holy Spirit. With an open "Heart" we can unify our mind with our heart and God will fill His Kingdom within us with His full goodness. For this to happen God must first be able to converse with us. We must be capable of hearing Him and willing to surrender our will to His direction. In this way God can become the sole focus of our life. We must learn to develop an intimate relationship with Him so we can have an ongoing dialogue with Him What gets in the way? It's our pride, our self-centeredness. We fail to see the larger picture and see our death as the end of everything that gives us pleasure. We become fearful and sinful seeking to satisfy our own needs. We are stuck until we can come to terms with the reality of our situation, just like the prodigal son before he was able to return to his father. We must say what the he said, "Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you and am no more worthy to be called your son. (Luke 15:19-19) In this way we are humbled. We discover how poorly we live by His commandments, how distant we are from Him. We see clearly our self-centeredness, our selfishness and pride. We become sorry for our condition and seek His help to return. From this realization we are motivated to make changes in our attitude and orientation toward life and God. We begin a long journey of purification where we liberate our "Heart" from all the bodily passions. In cooperation with Grace we will finally be able to surrender our whole being to Him, to commit our whole heart, our whole mind, and our whole soul to Him. We will discover the "Kingdom within." Then we fill them with vacations at the beach, camping trips in the woods and flying to Greece or far-off places. It s no wonder that church attendance dips in the summer. But while you are relaxing, your church continues to be busy with regular worship, social activities, caring for sick and the homebound members, planning weddings, baptisms and funerals, and ministering to the hungry and homeless in your community. And your clergy and church staff still need to be paid, as does the electric company. So, here s the problem: The bills continue to roll in even when you re away, and many stewards have not planned to keep their offerings current when they are on vacation. That s why so many churches face a cash crunch in the summer months. But here are some ideas for how to help Your church Saint George maintain its finances in the summer months. Pay it forward Your church would love to receive your summer offerings or part of them in advance. If you know you re going to be away, plan ahead by offering more in the weeks in advance of your time away from church. Make it up Alternatively, when you get back from your time away, give a little more in the weeks that follow in order to make up for the lost weeks. Use your envelopes Are you a check-writing person? Then simply fill in advance your offering envelopes with your weekly gift. If you have a check in every envelope, then on any given Sunday you need only to bring that day s envelope and whatever earlier Sunday envelopes are there. 20 Η ΘΕΙΑ ΚΟΙΝΩΝΙΑ Η Θεία Κοινωνία προσφέρεται στην Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία μόνο στα άτομα που βαφτίστηκαν στην Ορθόδοξη Πίστη. GUIDELINES FOR RECEIVING HOLY COMMUNION Holy Communion is offered in the Orthodox Church only to those individuals baptized and Chrismated (confirmed) in the Orthodox Faith. To participate in Holy Communion one must be in good standing with the Church spiritually (for example, married people must have had their marriage blessed in the Church and all must be without grave sin on their hearts). For all Orthodox Christians, the proper preparation for Holy Communion must be observed: examination of conscience, confession, reading the prayers for Holy Communion, and the proper fasting. If you have any further questions about this, please speak with the clergy. Women should remove all lipstick when approaching for Holy Communion.
