The St. Athanasius the Great Greek Orthodox Church in Arlington, Massachusetts strives to be a living witness of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Our mission as a Parish is to "Practice Hospitality" (Romans 12:13), as St. Paul so exhorts... Thus, it is our rich blessing to strive and bring the Light of Christ to all of God's people, through Orthodox Christian tradition, education, and philanthropy. We seek to serve the spiritual needs of our faithful parishioners through the sacramental life of the Church. By means of outreach and faith in God, we continue our growth as a living Church by inviting others into the Orthodox faith through Baptism and/or Chrismation, and educating them through the establishment of our Christian ministries, programs, schools, and philanthropic activities. 3 HAPPY NEW YEAR! Bless O Lord the Crowning of the New Year The above verse from the preeminent hymn of the September 1st Service confirms our request that the Good and Merciful Lord and God bless the New Church/Ecclesiastical Year with peace and holiness. The First of September is, for every Greek Orthodox Christian, Earth Day as proclaimed by His All-Holiness Patriarch Bartholomeos a number of years ago. It is, also, the commencement of the New Church/Ecclesiastical Year. As the New Church Year brgins, it should be a time for personal reflection, as we assess the past year s accomplishments, and work on the missed opportunities... Furthermore, it is traditional to make resolutions when the secular New Year rolls around. It is equally weighty to make spiritual resolutions when the new Church year arrives. The following are some of those found on our "to-do" resolution checklist: 1. Promise to "bad-mouth" no one. Gossip tears down; kind words build up. 2. Perform at least one act of kindness a day, every day. 3. Reach out to those who may be shut-in and/or lonely. Our senior citizens are desperate for companionship. 4. Pilgrimage each day to a place of peace and spend some time, 15 mins to one-half hour (minimum), "spiritually exercising" by reading from Scripture and inspirational works. 5. Learn something new about your faith each day. 6. Master the seven capital virtues: Humility, generosity, chastity, mildness, temperance, happiness, and diligence. 7. Purge the seven grievous sins from your life: Pride, greed, lust, anger, gluttony, envy, and sloth. 8. Admonish sinners, instruct the ignorant, counsel the doubtful, suffer wrongs patiently, forgive injuries, pray for the living and the dead, feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, ransom captives, shelter the homeless, visit the sick, and bury the dead. 9. Actively seek and engage in the gifts of the Holy Spirit: Wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety and fear of God. 10. "Rejoice always, pray unceasingly, in everything give thanks, for this is the Will of God in Christ Jesus."-1 Thessalonians 5: :16-20 RESPECT AND PROTECT OUR ENVIRONMENT... HAPPY NEW CHURCH YEAR! Fr. Nicholas M. Kastanas 2
Father Aaron s September Greeting I greet you with joy in our Lord Jesus Christ! What a joy it is to join your parish community as the assistant priest, starting one month ago. September is a month of beginnings. We began a new church year on September 1st. Our children begin their school years again. Our Catechetical Sunday School and many other ministries have a new beginning. And this year for the first time St. Athanasius Greek Orthodox Church in Arlington, has a second priest to assist Fr. Nick in serving your blessed community and guiding it on its journey towards the kingdom of God. Over the past month I have had the opportunity to accompany Fr. Nick on visitations, concelebrate services and sacraments, and begin preparations for the coming year of ministries, especially GOYA and Orthodox Campus Fellowship. I have seen even more clearly how extremely blessed we are to have Fr. Nick as our presiding priest, to lead our community on its shared faith pilgrimage, by the gentle Love of Christ and the grace of the Holy Spirit. Also, I have enjoyed working with and getting to know many of you, the faithful leaders and parishioners of our parish of Saint Athanasius. I look forward to helping and joining you and your families in any pastoral needs or special occasions you would like me to attend. I would love to take part in any special events or in times of need of prayer and support for your young people, for families, sport teams, businesses or any other organizations. I look forward to working, praying, and growing with you in the coming ecclesiastical year. With Love in the Lord, +Fr. Aaron Father Aaron s Sermon on August 7th One of the hot topics in the 2016 presidential race has been Universal Health Care. Regardless of our position on this issue, we have to acknowledge that people have need of health and healing. Is there anyone who does not need health care? Of course not, it is a basic human need. And our society shows concern for the universal health in another way--we are always talking about the latest health research and the latest fad diets--we have many different ways we try to promote health and healing for all: the Atkins diet - paleo diet - green juices - meatless Mondays - gluten free - organic fruits and veggies - organic meats - diet supplements. And with good reason; health and healing is a matter of stewardship -- of taking care of the bodies God has given us, because we are made in the image of God, and Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:9). But complete and total healing of our whole person, body and soul, comes from Christ, our complete healer, who being perfect God and perfect man, heals us by uniting us to God and to each other. Let us look at today s Gospel reading about various healings, but also offer some simple guidance of how to read and understand the Bible. Many of us struggle to understand the Bible. We would like to read the Bible and learn the many lessons 3
and experience the many blessings that the Bible has for us but we don t know how to begin. Here is a simple approach: First, we try to understand what is going on in the text. Second we ask-- What does it mean? What does the church teach about this? Third, we prayerfully apply it to our lives. At the end of today s reading-- after the healing of the two blind men--and after the healing of the dumb demoniac--there is an amazing statement. Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching... and preaching and healing every disease and every infirmity among the people. Please notice: Jesus presence brought all kinds of healing to everyone. Stop and think about it. Pay attention to the words: Jesus went all around healing every disease and every infirmity among the people. Not just the blind men and the dumb demoniac--everyone. For the first step of our Bible reading, we ask, What is happening in the text? Jesus went about all the cities and villages, healing... In other words, Jesus healed everyone--city folk and village folk, the rich and the poor, those with status and those without. And what did he heal? It says he was healing every disease and every infirmity. He not only heals everyone, he heals all kind of diseases: blindness, muteness, demon possession, yes, but let us expand our vision to the many other healings in the gospel: leprosy, loneliness, sexual addiction, greed, self-alienation, and many others. And this leads to the last piece of our quotation, among the people. Yes, this could apply to diseases of individuals, but even more so it speaks to diseases, if you will, or brokenness in our relationships, and in our society. Because the passions of our soul affect our relationships and so we need Christ s healing in our relationships as well. All that we have just said helps us to see what it means that Jesus heals every disease and every infirmity among the people. The second step in reading and understanding any passage in the Bible is to ask- What is the meaning of the events and what does the church teach us about it? Of course, the answer lies in who this person is that is accomplishing all this healing. Jesus has the ability to reach out and touch everyone. Who remembers the absolute classic television commercials by AT&T, the reach out touch someone ad campaign from the mid-1980 s? That was so powerful because of the power of one human being to touch another. Remember the young boy sitting on the front porch listening quietly and sadly as his friend explains all the benefits the boy can now enjoy, now that his older brother has gone off to college. Until his mother calls him through the screen door, It s your brother calling, and his face lights up and you hear the excitement in the older and younger brothers voices and you see the joy in their faces as they connect over a distance. As human beings we have this amazing power to reach out and touch others and bring healing joy in place of sadness. God became a human being so he could reach out and touch each one of us his children. In today s reading he reached out and touched the eyes of the blind men, and by their faith and his touch they were healed...likewise, today Jesus reaches out to touch all of us his people. As we say in the creed, For us human beings and for our salvation he came down from heaven and... became man. 4
Jesus Christ is our complete healer because he is complete and perfect. Perfect God and perfect man. Our illnesses of body and soul all go back to our separation from God. Adam and Eve were warned they would die if they ate the fruit they did not yet have a blessing to eat. And they did die--from the same sickness that afflicts all of us -- not having their souls connected with God. For when they disobeyed, they lost the garments of light, the Life of God, the grace he had given them. Adam and Eve were clothed in the God s holy light till they turned away from God, and saw that they were naked. The same light that shown forth from Christ s face and his very clothing on Mount Tabor, in the Feast of the Transfiguration that we celebrated recently, is the clothing of mankind in paradise. We can think of it like a suit of armor, or like a holy immune system that is really God himself, his energies that He gave us to be complete and healthy. This is the meaning of what is going on here in the text. By uniting God and man in himself and uniting himself to us, he heals us of this disease of separation from God and invites us back to our original state of health. The second step in reading and understanding any passage in the Bible is applying the teaching in our lives. Each healing in the Gospel shows us a dimension of the healing that we all need. We are the blind men--because so much of the time we don t see our lives- and especially our challenges- with the eyes of faith. We are the demon possessed--because whenever we sin, we are slaves of sin, slaves of the evil one. We are the mute--because we keep to ourselves the wonderful works that God has done in our lives, and so often we do not use our mouths and tongues to praise our God but to gossip, criticize, and complain. St. Nikodemos the Hagiorite comments on the healing of the blind men saying we should have the same attitude towards sin as going to bed with a poisonous snake. We must have zero tolerance for sin in ourselves. That kind of vigilance is normal for a Christian, and that means continual repentance. We need to continually reconnect with our own baptism and remember that, although we all struggle with illnesses of body and soul, we don t just accept these things as if they are par for the course, because Christ has given us the robe of light that Adam and Eve lost in paradise. When we waver in our commitment to our faith in Christ, we can use the words of the baptism to wake ourselves up and get back on track. And the words of the baptism show how adamant we are to be about uniting with Christ for our healing. When we are baptized the priest asks three times, Do you unite yourself to Christ? And each time we respond, I do unite with Him. And then the priest asks three times, Have you united yourself to Christ? And each time we say, I have united with Him. These words belong to us, if we call ourselves Orthodox Christians. It s not enough for our nouno or nouna, our mother or father, or anyone else to say these words. We must choose for ourselves if we will embrace Christ s healing. Jesus said to the blind me today, "Do you believe that I am able to do this?" They said to him, "Yes, Lord." Then he touched their eyes, saying, "According to your faith, be it done to you." As we prepare for Holy Communion, to be united once again with Christ and with all our brothers and sisters in Christ, let us make these words our own: Χιτώνα μοι παράσχου φωτεινόν Ο αναβαλόμενος φψς ως ιμάτιον Πολυέλεε Χριστε ο Θεός ημών. Grant to me a robe of light O most merciful Christ, our God You who clothe yourself with light As with a garment. 5

Catechetical Sunday Church School News The St. Athanasius Catechetical Sunday school program starts on Sunday September 18th, the first Sunday after the Universal Elevation of the Holy Cross. It is customary as we embark on a new academic year to ponder upon many new (and renewed) hopes and resolutions. We pray that for the upcoming year these resolutions include a renewed commitment to educate our children in our Orthodox faith, and to make them active participants of our rich Liturgical life. The Catechetical Sunday School provides many opportunities for our children to both learn and personally experience our Christian Orthodox tradition. We offer a rich and faith based teaching program for children of all ages. We welcome children as young as 4 years old (for our Pre K class) and as old as high school seniors (as teaching assistants). For speed and convenience you can register your children online at For those, unable to register online, we will hold a registration session, in the Church hall, September 18th, where you can also pick up a receipt of your online registration. Each year over 20 dedicated professional adults offer much time and effort in the Catechetical Sunday school ministry. But we can t do it without a strong partnership with each one of you, the parents. Parents are an integral part of any teaching activity and that is especially true for our Catechetical Sunday School program. It is surprising, and sometimes frightening, to think of the short time frame we have to influence the character and lives of our children. How can we prepare them against the evils of this world? We can start by attending with them the Divine Liturgy and help them participate (remember children don t drive!) in the Catechetical Sunday school activities. Sunday school starts at 10 am on Sunday mornings with attendance to the Divine Liturgy, and an engaging children s sermon. As in years past, special recognition (and incentives) will be given for exemplary attendance in the Divine Liturgy. Furthermore, children in grades 4 and beyond, are invited to join the youth choir. We pray for a rich and blessed year working together in the vineyard of the Lord. The first Sunday school staff meeting is scheduled for Monday August 29th at 6:30 pm. 9 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Teach the Children by Your Own Faith Journey I am adding my prayer to that of Ioannis Moutsatsos for "a renewed commitment to educate our children in our Orthodox faith, and to make them active participants of our rich Liturgical life." I would like to highlight his comment: Parents are an integral part of any teaching activity and that is especially true for our Catechetical Sunday School program. It is so important for us to remember, as parents and grandparents, aunts, uncles, and godparents, that the most important way we educate our children in the faith and make them active participants in the life of the Church, is by growing in our own faith, our own learning, and our own worship participation. Catechetical Sunday School is a complement to the education that takes place in the home, and parents are ordained by God as the first "catechists" - religious educators - of their children. This may seem like a tall order--teaching the faith to our children. We may question whether we have what it takes to teach the faith. We may have more questions than answers about why we do what we do in church. But let us remember what Jesus said to his disciples when they wanted to send the crowds away--because they believed that they were incapable of giving the people the food that they needed. Jesus said, You give them something to eat, and challenged them by asking this question What do you have? Go and see. When the disciples offered a mere five loaves and two fish, the grace of God multiplied their offering and fed thousands of people, with the food to spare. This is how it will be for us. As we learn to offer to our children what we do have, what we do know, and be honest about what we are still learning, God will bless our efforts at teaching the faith to our children. We might feel unprepared for this, as parents. We might look to the priests and teachers of the Church and say they have more to offer than we do as regular lay people, as regular mommies and daddies, nounos and nounas. But we have the most powerful lesson to give our children -- being ourselves. God does not expect us to know everything. Rather, He invites us to be on a journey of faith with Him and with our families, to share with our children that we are all making efforts to go up the ladder of divine ascent. It is important that they see us try. And it is equally important that we allow our children to see us as imperfect -- that they see us fall down and get back up again, (a.k.a. repentance). It is important they see us putting our trust in the unconditional agape Love of our Lord, to accept us and lift us up again by His grace, when we do fall short. As Fr. Nick said in a recent sermon, One hand washes the other and two hands wash the face. When the life in the home and the life in the church are in sync, the children benefit so much from both. But where they are at odds, our children get confused, or they get false messages, such as Church life is only for children and grandparents, and Be religious on Sunday mornings or holidays, and be like normal people the rest of the week. Let us therefore look for ways to bring the life and the teachings of the Holy Church into our homes. For example, to have an icon corner where the family says prayers together, however briefly, each day; putting prayer time on the calendar, putting a note on the refrigerator of a Bible verse that is appropriate to your family-- such as Bear one another s burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ, or Each of you should look not only to his own interests but also to the interests of others. We can make the beginning of the Catechetical Sunday School year a new beginning in our own spiritual life, recommitting ourselves to work out your own salvation. We can do this. And with God s help we will, for ourselves, our children, our parish and for the glory of our loving Lord. With love in Christ, Fr. Aaron 8

Philoptochos Conference Meeting Clergy-Laity Convention, July 4, 2016 Metropolis of Boston Philoptochos Rows 1 & 2 National Philoptochos President Maria Logus, Esq. led the Philoptochos Conference meetings from July 3 through July 8, 2016, in Nashville, Tennessee, encouraging Philoptochos delegates from across the United States to enrich their charitable programs and to develop new programs for increased Outreach. The National Philoptochos Feeding the Hungry program began as part of National Philoptochos President Maria Logus goal of doing -- more hands on philanthropy, engaging all members of our community in our work. There is an increased sense that a face to face encounter with those we help gives more meaning and Christian love acceptance to both the giver and the receiver. Another major concern discussed was the evil of human trafficking and the need to help the victims of this situation to repair and turn around their lives. In addition, the difficult economic situation of many persons in Greece and Cyprus is the focus of various non-governmental programs. Apostoli is a non-governmental, non-profit organization founded by the Social Services Department of Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Athens, which provides general aid to the people of Athens suffering from hunger, disability and illness. Other like-minded organizations are The Holy Metropolis of Thessaloniki; The Holy Archdiocese of Crete; The Kivotos tou Kosmou; as well as The Theotokos Foundation located in Limasol, Cyprus. These programs save lives and foster stability. Moreover, there is an increased emphasis to support the Orthodox Christian Mission Center (OCMC) and Support a Mission Priest (SAMP) to enable missionary teams to carry the message of the Orthodox Church throughout the world. Finally, in light of numerous religious and ethnic persecutions and displacements running rampant in so many countries throughout the world, the Ladies Philoptochos accepted an historic resolution to help disseminate information and voice their concerns to the international community and those in authority, strongly requesting they take action for the protection of human life and religious freedom. 21
