3 Father Christos Message LET US BE ATTENTIVE THE LESSON IS FROM SAINT JOHN OF DAMASCUS' LIFE AND WRITINGS!!! CAN PEOPLE OF DIFFERENT ETHNIC BACKGROUNDS AND RELIGIOUS BELIEFS LIVE IN HARMONY? WHO CAN MAKE THIS PEACEFUL CO-EXISTENCE POSSIBLE? The Wisdom of God!!! The Incarnate Logos!!! Childhood Although he was brought up under the Muslim rule of Damascus, this was not to affect his or his family's Christian faith or cause any grievances with the Muslim countrymen who held him in high esteem. To the extent that his father held a high hereditary public office with duties of chief financial officer for the caliph, Abdul Malekunder, apparently as head of the tax department for Syria. When John reached the age of twenty-three, his father sought out to find a Christian tutor who could provide the best education for his children available at the time. Records show that while spending some time in the market place John's father came across several captives, imprisoned as a result of a raid for prisoners of war that had taken place in the coasts of Italy. This man, a Sicilian monk by the name of Cosmas, turned out to be an erudite of great knowledge and wisdom. John's father arranged for the release of this man and appointed him tutor to his son. Under the instruction of Cosmas, John made great advances in fields of study such as music, astronomy and theology. According to his biographer, he soon equaled Diophantus in algebra and Euclid in geometry. Succession to "Chief Councilor" In spite of his Christian background, his family held a high hereditary public office with the Moslem rulers of Damascus, led by caliph Abd al-malik. He succeeded his father in his position upon his death; John de Damascene was made protosymbullus, or chief councilor of Damascus. It was around his term in office that bursts of insurgence by the iconoclasts began to appear in the form of heresy, actions which disturbed the Church of the East. In 726, in disregard of the protests of Germanus, Patriarch of Constantinople, Emperor Leo the Isaurian issued his first edict against the veneration of images and their exhibition in public places. A talented writer and in the secure surroundings of the caliph's court, John de Damascene initiated his literary defense against the monarch in three Apologetic Treatises against those Decrying the Holy Images. This was the earliest of his works and the one which earned him a reputation. Not only did he attack the monarch, but his use of a simpler writing style brought the controversy to the common people, inciting revolt among those of Christian faith. Unable to punish the writer openly, Leo the Isaurian managed to get possession of a manuscript written and signed by John de Damascene, which he used to forge a letter from John to the Isaurian monarch offering to betray into his hands the city of Damascus. Despite John's earnest advocation to his innocence, the caliph dismissed his plea and discharged him from his post, ordering his right hand, which he used for writing, to be severed at the wrist. According to the tenth-century biography, his hand was miraculously restored after fervent prayer before an icon of the Virgin Mary. At this point the caliph is said to have been convinced of his innocence and inclined to reinstate him to his former office. However, John then retired to the Monastery of Saint Sabbas near Jerusalem, where he continued to produce a stream of commentaries, hymns and apologetic writings, including the Oktoechos (the Church's service book of eight tones) and An Exact Exposition of the Orthodox Faith, a summary of the dogmatic writings of the Early Church Fathers. Saint John, inside the pages of one of his commentaries poses a question of great significance for our spiritual increase. He asks, What is the devil afraid of? Is he afraid of strict fasting? Of course not, for he is a spirit and is of no need of food. We can fast and fast, even stand on top of a column for forty years without food and he will not be afraid. Is he afraid of charitable giving? We can give away all that we possess; become famous for our charitable giving and still he will not be afraid of us. Is he afraid when we run to the caves of mountains and practice virginity? Not even this great virtue makes him afraid. Is he afraid when we wear big impressive crosses on our necks. NO!!! What brings him to fear and trembling asks Saint John of Damascus? WHAT EVER WE DO, SMALL OR GRAND, WE DO IT FOR CHRIST THE LORD!!!!!!!!! In another place the Church Father teaches us on how the devil tries to conquer souls. He says the evil one has three basic ways. First, he comes to our mind and tries to convince us not to do the good. Is he stupid? Cunning yes, stupid no! But our Christian ethos, faith, and upbringing rejects this notion and fights it by doing exactly the opposite. We do what the Lord has commanded us in order to avoid eternal hell. The evil one then comes a second time and says to us, Do the good but don't do it in Jesus' name. We fight this one also for the words of Saint Paul echoes in our ears; which words, "whatever is done not in the name of Jesus is evil doing". Realizing now that he cannot conquer us, the evil one tries this third and last trick. He congratulates us with the clapping of the hands and standing ovations, plaques with gold letters, speeches of fancy words in front of great crowds, and cries aloud, BRAVO, BRAVO, BRAVO, YOU HAVE DONE EXCELLENT WORK. NO ONE COULD HAVE DONE IT BETTER! And at that moment the mercury that is inside our thermometer, PRIDE, jumps through the roof and having lost our Foundation we fall into the pit like he did long time ago. Thank God for the teaching of Saint John. Dear Parishioners, by the time you receive this message the season of the Triodion will be wide open again by the pen of Saint Luke the Evangelist trying one more time to write in our hearts Christ's eternal message, "Avoid the pride of the Pharisee and acquire the Publican's humility." Through the intercessions of our Church Father John of Damascus Lord Jesus Christ have mercy on us, Father Christos

8 GOYA NEWS Goyans and parents traveled to St. Basil s Academy on Saturday December 20 with Father Christos. It was an enlightening experience for all and the Goyans were able to enjoy making friends with the kids there. The national Philoptochos purchased the property in 1944 and have supported St Basils over all these years. The children of St Basil s greatly appreciated the gifts and we were able to present Father Sitaras with monetary donations as well. I would like to thank all the organizations of Holy Trinity, the GOYA parents and our parishioners who made these gifts possible. Our annual GOYA Basketball tournament will take place Saturday February 14 at the Delaware Sportsplex on Ruthar drive in Newark. We are hosting 12 churches and over 400 people. Please consider attending our tournament to share fellowship with the other parishioners from these churches and to cheer on our GOYANs in the games. Help is needed for scorekeeping and serving breakfast and lunch. 12 AN ANNOUNCEMENT CONCERNING HOSPITAL VISITATIONS The vocation of the holy Orthodox Priesthood is not limited to services inside the temple. The gifts of God, the Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father, and the communion of the Holy Spirit is not confined in the area of the temple but can 'walk' and 'meet' and 'touch' those who are not able to bring themselves to the divine services. It comes a time when physically we cannot come in front of the holy cup to receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ because we are "imprisoned" temporarily in a bed of pain. Can the Church come to you then? Yes, she wants to be with you, but you need to call her. When we are notified by the hospital that one of our parishioners has been admitted thirty percent of the time the information is not accurate and the priest finds not the patient there. There have been times where we call just an hour or two before the visit and even though we are told that the patient is there he/she has been discharged. Therefore we ask from you personally or close family members to call us when a loved one has been admitted and keep us informed of their time of stay. The priest wants to visit all his parishioners at a time of illness and need but he needs your absolute cooperation so his time will not be used unprofitably. Also, please, please be reminded of this, the Priest is not the "angel of death" but the "messenger of good news and tidings". He carries in his briefcase "divine medicine" which the hospitals and the doctors have no possession. In Proverbs 38 we read: "Honor the physician with the honor due him, and according to your need of him, for the Lord created him, Healing comes from the Lord". And further down it says, "My son, do not be negligent when you are sick, but pray to the Lord and He will heal you". And James the Apostle advices: "Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the priests of the Church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up". James 5: Remember when Peter was drowning? He cried out," Lord save me". The blessings of the Lord be upon you all, Father Christos The Parish Council s New Years Dinner held at parishioner John Constantinou restaurant Walter s Steak House January, 13, 2015

The first Christians attended in the synagogue day and evening praying and soon they developed their own. During these services readings were given from the Psalter and the Prophets, and soon a long prayer of petitions was appended as it is evidenced by an extract in the Epistle of St. Clement of Rome, bishop of Rome during the last decade of the very first century. Also Clement of Alexandria, about , is in favor of set public prayer services at various times of day and night. The first liturgical form of Hesperinos (omit the H when you pronounce the word in Greek) is found in the VIII Book of the Apostolic Constitutions. Morning and evening services were attended by both baptized and catechumens. After a certain point, the catechumens were dismissed and the prayers that followed concerned the life of the Christians, vissicitudes and adversaries. Some of these prayers are repeated verbatim today in Orthodox Hesperinos. The main articulation of today s Hesperinos dates back the 7 th century according to the liturgical order in force in the monastery of Mount Sinai. Hesperinos is taken to be the beginning of the following day and hymns are sung and readings are given referring to the feast of the next day. In monasteries, the Hesperinos service is held every evening, as morning and night services are also held. Parochial conditions in modern society have limited the Hesperinos to the eve of every Sunday and to the eve of the more important feasts of the Orthodox calendar. Needless to mention, where the priest s residence is in the immediate proximity of his church, Hesperinos is read by him every evening even if there is no attendance. As expected, the hymns and Biblical readings refer to the feast of the next day. However, hymns pertaining to Christ and His Resurrection always precede those in honor of others whose feast falls on a Sunday. The same order is observed in the Orthros and the Liturgy the next day. One particular hymn in the Hesperinos must be mentioned here; it begins with two words Φως ιλαρόυ (O gladsome light) and it has become famous to the point of having been introduced in poetic translations to the Prayer Books of other Churches. It comprises three stanzas salutatory to the evening light and in the nature of thanksgiving for the day. The middle stanza calls upon the congregation to offer praise to Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, one God. The hymn goes back at least to the times of St. Basil and, since he mentions and explains it, it must have been current in the Church for some time before that. Some believe that the hymn actually refers to the light of the Resurrection that is offered to the congregation in the famous Church of Resurrection in Jerusalem at the midnight Paschal service.

22 Judgment Sunday (Meatfare Sunday) Reading: The foregoing two parables -- especially that of the Prodigal Son -- have presented to us God's extreme goodness and love for man. But lest certain persons, putting their confidence in this alone, live carelessly, squandering upon sin the time given them to work out their salvation, and death suddenly snatch them away, the most divine Fathers have appointed this day's feast commemorating Christ's impartial Second Coming, through which we bring to mind that God is not only the Friend of man, but also the most righteous Judge, Who recompenses to each according to his deeds. It is the aim of the holy Fathers, through bringing to mind that fearful day, to rouse us from the slumber of carelessness unto the work of virtue, and to move us to love and compassion for our brethren. Besides this, even as on the coming Sunday of Cheese-fare we commemorate Adam's exile from the Paradise of delight -- which exile is the beginning of life as we know it now -- it is clear that today's is reckoned the last of all feasts, because on the last day of judgment, truly, everything of this world will come to an end. All foods, except meat and meat products, are allowed during the week that follows this Sunday. Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Second Tone When You descended unto death, O Lord who yourself are immortal Life, then did You mortify Hades by the lightning flash of Your Divinity. Also when You raised the dead from the netherworld, all the Powers of the heavens were crying out: O Giver of life, Christ our God, glory be to You. Resurrectional Kontakion in the Second Tone You rose from the tomb, O Savior all-powerful, * and Hades beheld the marvel and was struck with fear, * and the dead were rising up, and creation beholds and rejoices with You, * and Adam is also exultant; O my Savior, and the world ever sings Your praise. Seasonal Kontakion in the First Tone O God, when You come upon the earth in glory, the whole world will tremble. A river of fire will bring all before Your Judgment Seat and the books will be opened, and everything in secret will become public. At that time, deliver me from the fire which never dies, and enable me to stand by Your right hand, O Judge most just. Reading courtesy of Narthex Press / Resurrectional courtesy of St. Gregory Palamas Monastery Seasonal courtesy of Narthex Press / Icon courtesy of St. Isaac's Skete Forgiveness Sunday Reading: The Holy Fathers have appointed the commemoration of Adam's exile from the Paradise of delight here, on the eve of the holy Forty-day Fast, demonstrating to us not by simple words, but by actual deeds, how beneficial fasting is for man, and how harmful and destructive are insatiety and the transgressing of the divine commandments. For the first commandment that God gave to man was that of fasting, which the first-fashioned received but did not keep; and not only did they not become gods, as they had imagined, but they lost even that blessed life which they had, and they fell into corruption and death, and transmitted these and innumerable other evils to all of mankind. The God-bearing Fathers set these things before us today, that by bringing to mind what we have fallen from, and what we have suffered because of the insatiety and disobedience of the first-fashioned, we might be diligent to return again to that ancient bliss and glory by means of fasting and obedience to all the divine commands. Taking occasion from today's Gospel (Matt. 6:14-21) to begin the Fast unencumbered by enmity, we also ask forgiveness this day, first from God, then from one another and all creation. Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Third Tone Let the heavens sing for joy, and let everything on earth be glad. * For with His Arm the Lord has worked power. * He trampled death under foot by means of death; * and He became the firstborn from the dead. * From the maw of Hades He delivered us; * and He granted the world His great mercy. Resurrectional Kontakion in the Third Tone From the tomb You rose today, * O Lord of tender compassion, * also from the gates of death * You led us out, O our Savior. * On this day is Adam dancing and Eve rejoices, * and with them together Patriarchs and the Prophets * are unceasingly extolling the divine power of Your authority. Seasonal Kontakion in the Plagal of the Second Tone O Master, Prudence, Guide of Wisdom, Instruction to the foolish and Defender of the poor, strengthen my heart and grant it discernment. Give me words, Word of the Father, for behold, I shall not keep my lips from crying out to You, "O Merciful One, have mercy on me who has fallen." 28 Διάφορα Δρ. Various Dr. Costas G. Fountzoulas Post-traumatic stress disorder explored by Sophocles 2500 years ago Many of our soldiers return home from war suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Officials at the Defense Department have turned to the Greeks to explore the psychic impact of war. In 2009, a special performance was held for dozens of service members, veterans, relatives and Pentagon officials at St. Vincent s Hospital in Manhattan. The Pentagon has provided $3.7 million for an independent production company, Theater of War, to visit 50 military sites to stage readings from two plays by Sophocles, Ajax and Philoctetes, for service members. In Ajax, the Trojan hero Ajax is plotting to murder Greek generals who have disgraced him. Under a dream by the goddess Athena, he ends up slaughtering farm animals he thinks are the officers. Ajax s wife is trying to bring him to his senses; the final scene shows Ajax in agony, committing suicide. In Philoctetes, Greek military leaders are plotting to trick the hero into leading an attack on Troy. However, Philoctetes is struggling with both physical and emotional pain. The killing of soldiers by their comrades was mentioned only a few times during the post-performance discussion. However, there were echoes of this killing, especially in the story of Ajax, in the pain that soldiers and their loved ones faced then and now. Questions raised whether war can drive warriors to acts of evil. These plays are part of a 2,500-year history of mental and emotional pain for soldiers that run up to the present day. Sophocles was himself a general, and Athens during his time was at war for many years. Thousands of citizen-soldiers saw these plays. These plays may help modern-day soldiers to see their difficulties in a larger historical context, and perhaps help them feel less alone. Ajax, threatened to lash the back of his Greek enemy Odysseus until it s red with blood. He implored a comrade, Cut my throat right now. I was the bravest in battle, never lost my wits, What a joke my life has become. Tecmessa, Ajax s wife, begged him to think of his loved ones before doing harm. The stain of it will shame your family, she said. Some soldiers, still struggling with memories found the scene hard to watch at times and got out the theater. The play helped me, definitely, because I could relate to the characters, one soldier said. When soldiers come home from war, you never know what to expect. They might get violent. That was my biggest fear. We at home might not have been on the battlefield, but it sure feels like it. And he praised the use of theater to help put a spotlight on trauma. I have been Ajax, he said. I have spoken to Ajax.

31 HARALAMBOS THE HOLY MARTYR February 10 Apolytikion in the Fourth Tone O wise Haralambos, you were proven an unshakable pillar of the Church of Christ; an ever-shining lamp of the universe. You shone in the world by your martyrdom. You delivered us from the moonless night of idolatry O blessed one. Wherefore, boldly intercede to Christ that we may be saved. Kontakion in the Fourth Tone O Priest-martyr, athlete, champion Haralambos, your relics are a priceless treasure of the Church. Wherefore she rejoices, glorifying the Creator. Reading: This Saint was a priest of the Christians in Magnesia, the foremost city of Thessaly, in the diocese having the same name. He contested during the reign of Alexander Severus ( ), when Lucian was Proconsul of Magnesia. At the time of his martyrdom the Saint was 103 years of age. St. Haralambos is commemorated on February 10th, with the exception when this date falls on the Saturday of the Souls preceeding Lent or on Clean Monday (the first day of Lent), in which case the feast is celebrated on February 9th. POLYCARP THE HOLY MARTYR & BISHOP OF SMYRNA February 23 Apolytikion in the Fourth Tone As a sharer of the ways and a successor to the throne of the Apostles, O inspired of God, thou foundest discipline to be a means of ascent to divine vision. Wherefore, having rightly divided the word of truth, thou didst also contest for the Faith even unto blood, O Hieromartyr Polycarp. Intercede with Christ our God that our souls be saved. Kontakion in the First Tone Through godly virtues, thou broughtest forth for the Lord God much spiritual fruit, O thou most blessed Hierarch, and so didst prove worthy of God thy Lord, O wise Polycarp. Wherefore, on this day we who have all been enlightened through thy holy words extol thy praiseworthy mem'ry and glorify Christ the Lord. Reading: This apostolic and prophetic man, and model of faith and truth, was a disciple of John the Evangelist, successor of Bucolus (Feb. 6), and teacher of Irenaeus (Aug. 23). He was an old man and full of days when the fifth persecution was raised against the Christians under Marcus Aurelius. When his pursuers, sent by the ruler, found Polycarp, he commanded that they be given something to eat and drink, then asked them to give him an hour to pray; he stood and prayed, full of grace, for two hours, so that his captors repented that they had come against so venerable a man. He was brought by the Proconsul of Smyrna into the stadium and was commanded, "Swear by the fortune of Caesar; repent, and say, 'Away with the atheists.'" By atheists, the Proconsul meant the Christians. But Polycarp, gazing at the heathen in the stadium, waved his hand towards them and said, "Away with the atheists." When the Proconsul urged him to blaspheme against Christ, he said: "I have been serving Christ for eighty-six years, and He has wronged me in nothing; how can I blaspheme my King Who has saved me?" But the tyrant became enraged at these words and commanded that he be cast into the fire, and thus he gloriously expired about the year 163. As Eusebius says, "Polycarp everywhere taught what he had also learned from the Apostles, which also the Church has handed down; and this alone is true" (Eccl. Hist., Book IV, ch. 14,15).
