3 I pray that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving, filled with blessings from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. On November 15 th, the Holy Orthodox Church entered into the period of the Christmas/Nativity fast. It is a time to reflect on our behavior, our commitment to Christ and to understand why we celebrate this Great feast of the Church. Many of us get caught up in the materialistic aspect of the Christmas holiday. It is very easy to do so if we are not properly equipped with the Orthodox Christian understanding of Christ s birth. We run around for weeks getting gifts to satisfy our loved ones. The more we buy the happier our children will be! What was in last year is so outdated this year! Buy, buy, buy!!! Why not? It is a happy time and it should be celebrated! However, the true meaning of our Lord s Birth should be filled with at least the same, if not more, love, peace, cheer, happiness and giving to our Lord s House; His Cave. We should all focus our attention on the true meaning of Christmas; that is, our Lord and Savior s birth. I mentioned above that our time is filled with secondary business. Likewise, our Church should be filled with prayerful hearts! Presents are bought and wrapped. Likewise, we can give our Savior the best present: food to His poor and hungry servants or clothing to the less fortunate and down-trodden! Parties and gettogethers are planned. Let us try to attend a few less parties and enjoy more spiritual togetherness with our families, perhaps teaching our children the correct way to honor our Lord s birth. We may even choose to invite a family or individual, who we would normally never invite to our home, for some Christmas love and cheer. Now that I have given you just a few examples of how Christmas can be very rewarding both spiritually and festively, the decision is up to you. Always remember, our first and foremost responsibility as an Orthodox Christian is to Worship and Glorify Christ! Let us all embrace our Lord and Savior s birth into the manger of our souls and let us cry out triumphantly Christ Is Born, Glorify Him! In Anticipation of the Nativity of Christ, I remain, Father Nick s Message

Kalanda or Christmas Carols* Dr. Costas G. Fountzoulas The word Kalanda is derived from the Latin word Calendae, meaning The first day of the month. In the Eastern Roman Empire, also known as Byzantine Empire, they used to observe the Calendae of January in a particular magnificent way that, to a great extent, were related to ancient Hellenic customs. The Calendae of January were called Pianepsia, name derived from the month Pianepsiona (15 October to 15 November). In ancient Greece, during the Dionysian festivities, the kids were visiting the houses and they were singing the calanda holding in their hand a laurel or an olive branch, wrapped up in sheep wool, which was called Eresioni. The kids then, as now, were singing various songs (caroling) at the houses for a tip. In actually, the Christmas Kalanda were New Year s Kalanda, because until the 4 th century A.D. the 25 th of December was considered the beginning of the New Year. According to a legend, the custom of singing the Kalanda (Caroling) of Christmas was preserved by Saint Francis. In particular, it is said that when some peasants visited his tent during Christmas he asked them to carol. In the past, the kids used to carol during the evening of the Christmas Eve, New Year s Day and Epiphany (Phota), holding a cane or a stick in order to protect themselves from the wild dogs of the neighborhood. Nowadays, the kids sing the Kalanda during the morning of the eve of these three great feasts of Christianity, by visiting the houses as early as 5:00 o clock in the morning. Whereas in the past the kids were holding a small effigy of a ship when they were caroling, now they usually are holding a small steel triangle, which they are beating rhythmically inasmuch as singing carols to keep the pace. During the ancient Greek feast of Anthestiria, the arrival of god Dionysos was also portrayed by an effigy of a small ship. In the not so distant past, at the times of the great poverty, since money was scarce, the most common tip of the children were "Kolintra", that is small loaves of wheat or barley. Our customs go back many eons! * Carol: Derived from the Latin choraules, which is derived from the Greek choraules, a flute player who accompanied the choral dance. MERRY CHRISTMAS!!
