Ο καθένας ας δώσει ό,τι του λέει η καρδιά του χωρίς να στενοχωριέται ή να εξαναγκάζεται, γιατί «ο Θεός αγαπάει αυτόν που δίνει με ευχαρί στηση». Ο Θεός έχει τη δύναμη να σας χορηγήσει πλουσιοπάροχα κάθε δωρεά, ώστε να είστε πάντοτε σε όλα τελείως αυτάρκεις, και να δίνετε με το παραπάνω για κάθε καλό σκοπό. Το λέει κι η Γραφή: Σκόρπισε, έδωσε στους φτωχούς, η αγαθοεργία του θα παραμένει αιώνια. Κι αυτός που δίνει στο σποριά το σπόρο και το ψωμί για να τραφεί, ας δώσει και ας πληθύνει και το δικό σας σπόρο και ας αυξή σει τους καρπούς της αγαθοεργίας σας. Ο Θεός θα σας κάνει πλούσιους σε όλα, για να μπορείτε να δίνετε γενναιόδωρα. Αυτοί που θα πάρουν από μας τη δική σας εισφορά θα ευχαριστούν το Θεό. EPISTLE: St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 9:6-11 Brethren, he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must do as he has made up his mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that you may always have enough of everything and may provide in abundance for every good work. As it is written, "He scatters abroad, he gives to the poor; his righteousness endures for ever." He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your resources and increase the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way for great generosity, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God. ΕΥΑΓΓΕΛΙΟ: Κυριακή Η Λουκά, Ευαγγ. ανάγνωσμα: Λουκά 10, Σηκώθηκε τότε ξαφνικά ένας νομικός και θέλοντας να τον δοκιμάσει είπε: Δάσκαλε, τι πρέπει να κάνω για να κληρονομήσω αιώνια ζωή; Kι ο Ιησούς του είπε: Στο νόμο τι είναι γραμμένο; Τι διαβάζεις; Εκείνος αποκρίθηκε: Nα αγαπήσεις τον Kύριο το Θεό σου με όλη την καρδιά σου και με όλη την ψυχή σου και με όλη τη διάνοιά σου, κι επίσης τον πλησίον σου σαν τον εαυτό σου. Τότε ο Ιησούς του είπε: Ορθά αποκρίθηκες. Αυτό να κάμνεις και θα ζήσεις. Εκείνος όμως, θέλοντας να δικαιολογήσει τον εαυτό του, είπε στον Ιησού: Kαι ποιος είναι ο πλησίον μου; Πήρε τότε αφορμή από αυτό ο Ιησούς και είπε: Kάποιος κατέβαινε από την Iερουσαλήμ στην Iεριχώ. Έπεσε όμως σε χέρια ληστών, οι οποίοι, αφού τον ξεγύμνωσαν και τον καταπλήγωσαν, τον άφησαν μισοπεθαμένο κι έφυγαν. Kατά σύμπτωση, από το δρόμο εκείνο κατέβαινε ένας ιερέας, και παρόλο που τον είδε, τον προσπέρασε. Το ίδιο έκανε κι ένας Λευίτης, που παρουσιάστηκε στον τόπο εκείνο. Αφού ήρθε και είδε, συνέχισε το δρόμο του χωρίς να προσφέρει βοήθεια. Όμως ένας Σαμαρείτης ταξιδιώτης έφτασε κι αυτός στον τόπο που ήταν ο πληγωμένος, και μόλις τον είδε τον σπλαχνίστηκε. Πήγε τότε κοντά του και επέδεσε τα τραύματά του χύνοντας πάνω τους λάδι και κρασί. Κατόπιν τον ανέβασε στο δικό του ζώο, τον πήγε σε ένα πανδοχείο και τον περιποιήθηκε. Kαι την επόμενη μέρα βγήκε, κι αφού έβγαλε δυο δηνάρια, τα έδωσε στον πανδοχέα και του είπε: Φρόντισέ τον κι ό,τι παραπάνω ξοδέψεις, θα σου τα πληρώσω εγώ στην επιστροφή μου. Ποιος, λοιπόν, από τους τρεις αυτούς, νομίζεις πως έγινε ο πλησίον εκείνου που έπεσε στους ληστές; Kι εκείνος είπε: Αυτός που τον περιποιήθηκε με ευσπλαχνία. Τότε ο Ιησούς του είπε: Πήγαινε και να κάνεις κι εσύ το ίδιο. GOSPEL: 8th Sunday of Luke The Gospel According to Luke 10:25-37 At that time, a lawyer stood up to put Jesus to the test, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit 2

3 eternal life?" He said to him, "What is written in the law? How do you read?" And he answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself." And he said to him, "You have answered right; do this, and you will live."but he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" Jesus replied, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him, and departed, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was; and when he saw him, he had compassion, and went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; then he set him on his own beast and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, 'Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.' Which of these three, do you think, proved neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?" He said, "The one who showed mercy on him." And Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise." PRAYER PRAY EVERY Morning and Evening at a Minimum Remember to make your prayer life one that is a firm rule and not something that is done occasionally or sporadically. It must be done each day morning and evening at a minimum. You need to commit to follow your rule each and every day. Think about certain personal hygiene tasks such as brushing your teeth that you do each day out of habit. You don t forget to do them each day. Your prayer needs to become a habit as strong as these. Prayer must become a daily habit that you never forget. Prayer is essential for the health of our soul Just like the hygiene activities that we do for the health of our body. PRAYER FOR OUR CHILDREN O God, our heavenly Father, Who loves mankind and is a most merciful and compassionate God, have mercy upon Your servant(s) (names), for whom I humbly pray to You, and whom I commend to Your gracious care and protection. O God, be their guide and guardian in all their endeavors, lead them in the path of Your truth, and draw them nearer to You, so that they may lead a godly and righteous life in Your love and fear, doing Your will in all things. Give them grace and mercy so that they may be patient, hard working, tireless, devout, and charitable. Defend them against the assaults of the enemy, and grant them wisdom and strength to resist all temptation and corruption, and direct them in the way of salvation, through the goodness of your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ, and the prayers of His Holy Mother and the blessed Saints. 6 Guidelines for the Nativity Fast The Nativity Fast Begins (November 15 through December 24) Strict Fast Refrain from meat, fish, oil, wine, dairy, and eggs. The Nativity Fast is one of the four Canonical Fasting Seasons in the Church year. This is a joyous fast in anticipation of the Nativity of Christ. That is the reason it is less strict than other fasting periods. The fast is divided into two periods. The 1st period is November 15th through December 19th when the traditional fasting discipline (no meat, dairy, fish, wine, and oil) is observed. There is dispensation given for wine and oil on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Similarly, fish, wine, and oil are permitted on Saturdays and Sundays. The 2nd period is December 20th through 24th when the traditional fasting discipline (no meat, dairy, fish, wine, and oil) is observed. There is dispensation given for wine and oil only on Saturday and Sunday during this period. Here are the guidelines: ( More fish is allowed) Meat Dairy Fish Wine Oil beef, chicken, pork, turkey, elk, veal, lamb, deer, rabbit, buffalo, and so forth milk, eggs, cheese, butter, yogurt, cream, and so forth fish with a backbone (not including shrimp, octopus, shellfish, squid, or other seafood. Abstain. Abstain. Permitted only on Saturdays and Sundays before December 20. (some permit fish Tuesdays and Thursdays also) (some include all types of alcohol in this category) Permitted only on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, & Sundays before December 20. (some include all types of oil in this category) Permitted only on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, & Sundays before December 20. Abstinence includes refraining from the food and drink mentioned above, as well as from smoking. The Eucharistic Fast means abstaining from at least the previous midnight for communing at a morning Liturgy. 6

Veterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, was originally set as a U.S. legal holiday to honor the end of World War I, which officially took place on November 11, In legislation that was passed in 1938, November 11 was "dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be hereafter celebrated and known as 'Armistice Day.'" 8 Η αγάπη προς τον πλησίον Η ευαγγελική περικοπή που σήμερα ακούσαμε είναι η γνωστή παραβολή του καλού Σαμαρείτου. Αφού ο Κύριος μας ερωτήθηκε από ένα νομικό, δάσκαλο δηλαδή του Μωσαϊκού Νόμου, απαντά στο ερώτημα «τι ποιήσας ζωήν αιώνιον κληρονομήσω;» Τι πρέπει, δηλαδή, να κάνω για να κληρονομήσω την αιώνια ζωή; Ο ιερός Ευαγγελιστής σημειώνει για το νομικό και το εξής: «εκπειράζων αυτόν», ήθελε δηλαδή να παγιδεύσει τον Ιησού, να τον φέρει σε δύσκολη θέση. Δεν τον πίστευε ως Θεό και τη διδασκαλία του τη θεωρούσε αντίθετη με όσα έλεγε ο Νόμος του Μωϋσέως. Προσήλθε λοιπόν στο Χριστό χωρίς αγαθή πρόθεση, θέλοντας απλά μέσα από τη συζήτηση να φανεί η αντίθεση του Χριστού με το Νόμο πράγμα που θα σήμαινε, πως ούτε Θεός ήταν, ούτε προερχόταν «εκ Θεού». Ο Χριστός όμως που «γινώσκει τα κρύφια των καρδιών ημών», παρόλο που γνωρίζει ότι ο νομικός δεν αγνοεί την απάντηση στο ερώτημα που ο ίδιος έθεσε, εντούτοις απαντά στο νομικό. Αυτός που ήλθε «σώσαι το απολωλός» δεν τον αποπαίρνει για το ύπουλο ερώτημά του, αλλά απαντά με νέο ερώτημα «εν τω νόμω τι γέγραπται; πώς αναγινώσκεις;» Στο ερώτημα λοιπόν του Χριστού «τι γράφει ο Νόμος, τι διαβάζεις σ αυτόν» ο νομικός απαντά:«αγαπήσεις Κύριον τον Θεόν σου εξ όλης της καρδίας σου και εξ όλης της ψυχής σου και εξ όλης της ισχύος σου και εξ όλης της διανοίας σου, και τον πλησίον σου ως εαυτόν». Μέχρι εδώ πολύ ωραία τα είπε ο νομικός. Είναι αλήθεια πως δεν υστερούσε στην εξωτερική γνώση του Νόμου. Γνώριζε το γράμμα και αγνοούσε το πνεύμα. Γι αυτό ο Χριστός προχωρεί στην ουσία, στο «ποίει», στην έμπρακτη δηλαδή εφαρμογή όλων αυτών που γνωρίζει διανοητικά ο άνθρωπος. Έτσι με όσα εξέφρασε ο νομικός για το Νόμο και με αυτό που υπέδειξε ο Χριστός «τούτο ποίει και ζήση» αποδείχθηκε ότι ο Χριστός δεν διδάσκει αντίθετα από τον Νόμο, «ουκ ήλθε καταλήσαι αλλά πληρώσαι», αλλά ήλθε για να δώσει πληρότητα με την αγάπη στο Θεό και τον άνθρωπο. Η αγάπη δεν είναι ένας κανόνας που τον αποστηθίζουμε, όπως έκανε ο νομικός, αλλά υπέρβαση της αυτοαγάπης, του εγωϊσμού και της φιλαυτίας μας για να μπορέσει να ζήσει και ο «άλλος». Ο «πλησίον» Ο νομικός ακούοντας και τον έπαινο από το Χριστό, «ορθώς απεκρίθης», φαίνεται πως υπερυψώθηκε η αλαζονεία του. Θέλοντας να δικαιολογηθεί γι αυτό που ρώτησε, αφού ήξερε την απάντηση, ρώτησε τον Χριστό: και ποιος είναι «πλησίον» μου; Το ζήτημα αυτό απασχολούσε σοβαρά τους Ιουδαίους κατά την εποχήν αυτήν. Πολλοί υποστήριζαν ότι ο νόμος εξαιρεί όλους τους εθνικούς όταν λέγει πλησίον. Θεωρούσε λοιπόν ο νομικός εκείνος αποκλειστικά τον εαυτό του δίκαιο, ενάρετο, βαθύ γνώστη του νόμου και γι αυτό κανένας δεν βρισκόταν που να του μοιάζει ώστε να είναι «πλησίον» του. Ο Χριστός όμως αναιρεί τις προϋποθέσεις του νομικού. Διδάσκει πως το κοινό που έχει μ εμάς κάποιος, για να είναι «πλησίον» μας, δεν είναι ούτε το αξίωμα ούτε η αρετή, ούτε ο τόπος καταγωγής, ούτε οτιδήποτε άλλο, παρά μόνο η κοινή ανθρώπινη φύση. Όσοι μετέχουν σ αυτή είναι πλησίον μας. Σ αυτούς οφείλουμε κι εμείς να είμαστε «πλησίον» τους με την αγάπη, τη φροντίδα, την καλή μας διάθεση, και ιδιαιτέρως όταν βρίσκονται σε δύσκολη θέση και έχουν ανάγκη βοηθείας.στη παραβολή ο Χριστός με τρόπο σαφή και παραστατικό διεκτραγωδεί τη συμφορά ενός Ιουδαίου, που κατέβηκε από την Ιερουσαλήμ στην Ιεριχώ και έπεσε στα χέρια ληστών, οι οποίοι με σκληρότητα και απανθρωπιά τον γύμνωσαν, του πήραν ότι είχε και στη συνέχεια τον κτύπησαν χωρίς οίκτο. Αφού χωρίς έλεος τον γέμισαν πληγές σ όλο του το σώμα τον άφησαν αναίσθητο, «ημιθανή» όπως αναφέρει ο Χριστός. 8

9 Ο ιερέας και ο λευΐτης Συνέπεσε λέγει ο Κύριος να περάσει απ εκεί πρώτα ένας ιερέας και στην συνέχεια ένας λευΐτης, Ιουδαίοι και οι δύο, εκπρόσωποι του νόμου και των προφητών, θρησκευτικοί ηγέτες και δάσκαλοι. Και ενώ και οι δύο γνώριζαν και δίδασκαν με βάση το γράμμα του νόμου για τη διπλή αγάπη στον Θεό και τον «πλησίον», εντούτοις «ιδών αυτόν αντιπαρήλθαν». Η παραβολή δεν μας δίνει καμιά εξήγηση για τη στάση των δύο θέλοντας να τονίσει την στάση του τρίτου προσώπου της διηγήσεως, του Σαμαρείτη. Ενός ανθρώπου που για τον Ιουδαίο σήμαινε αιρετικός, ακάθαρτος και απόβλητος. Ο Σαμαρείτης Μετά τον ιερέα και τον λευΐτη λοιπόν ήλθε στον τόπο εκείνο κάποιος άλλος, ξένος ως προς την εθνικότητα, Σαμαρείτης. Είδε τον δυστυχισμένο άνθρωπο πεσμένο στην άκρη του δρόμου και τον συμπόνεσε. Έσκυψε, έπλυνε τις πληγές, έδεσε τα τραύματά του, τον ανέβασε στο ζώο του, τον μετέφερε στο πανδοχείο, τον φρόντισε με κάθε επιμέλεια. Ακόμη πλήρωσε γι αυτόν. Έδωσε την εντολή να συνεχίσουν την φροντίδα και υποσχέθηκε, πως όταν σε κάποιο καιρό επιστρέψει θα πλήρωνε ότι επιπλέον κόστιζε η θεραπεία του. Με όλη αυτή τη φροντίδα του Σαμαρείτη, ο πληγωμένος σώθηκε από βέβαιο θάνατο. Η αγάπη μας να εκφράζεται έμπρακτα Η αγάπη και τα φιλάνθρωπα αισθήματα μας για τον πλησίον δεν πρέπει να περιορίζονται σε λόγια μόνο. Είναι ανάγκη να μεταφράζονται σε πράξεις και συγκεκριμένες ενέργειες. Όπως η πίστη έτσι και η αγάπη αν δεν συνοδεύεται από τα ανάλογα έργα, είναι νεκρή και ανώφελη. Αυτή την έμπρακτη αγάπη, την αγάπη των έργων, μας δείχνει ο καλός Σαμαρείτης. Αυτήν αποζητά και ο πλησίον μας. Ο φτωχός θέλει βοήθεια, ο πεινασμένος ψωμί, ο γυμνός ένδυμα, ο φυλακισμένος την επίσκεψη, ο άρρωστος τη συμπαράσταση, ο κατάκοιτος την περιποίηση. Ο άγιος Ιάκωβος ο αδελφόθεος, θέλοντας να τονίσει το χρέος της έμπρακτης αγάπης λέγει: «Εάν ένας αδελφός ή μια αδελφή δεν έχουν να ντυθούν και να συντηρηθούν και κάποιος από σας τους πει, «Πηγαίνετε στο καλό, ζεσταθείτε και χορταστείτε», και δεν τους δώσετε τα αναγκαία για το σώμα, ποιο το όφελος;»(ιακ 2, 15-16). Τα λόγια όσο καλά κι αν είναι δεν ωφελούν όταν ο άλλος έχει ανάγκη από την έμπρακτη αγάπη μας. «Τεκνία», μας συμβουλεύει ο Ευαγγελιστής της αγάπης, «μη αγαπώμεν λόγω, μηδέ γλώσση, αλλ εν έργω και αληθεία» (Α Ιω. 3,18). Με την παραβολή αυτή ο Χριστός δίδαξε όχι μόνο τον νομικό αλλά και τον κάθε άνθρωπο, πως κληρονομείται η αιώνια ζωή και πως με τη ζωή ως αγάπη στον Θεό και τον άνθρωπο, ζούμε από τώρα την αιώνια ζωή. Η αγάπη είναι τροφός και μητέρα της αιώνιας ζωής. Αν ζήσουμε την παρούσα ζωή ως αγάπη και κοινωνία με τον Θεό και τον άνθρωπο, θα ενωθούμε με τον Θεό και αυτή η ένωση θα είναι «Θεία και ανεννόητος (άπειρος) ηδονή», ενώ για όσους αρνηθούν την αγάπη θα είναι «ανεκλάλητος οδύνη» (άγιος Μάξιμος). Αυτή δε η ζωή ως αγάπη είναι καρπός της νεκρώσεως των παθών μας. Στο τέλος της Παραβολής ο Χριστός ερωτά τον νομικό: ποιος από τους τρεις έγινε «πλησίον» του «εμπεσόντος εις τους ληστάς;». Την ερώτηση δηλαδή του νομικού: «ποιός είναι», ο Χριστός τη μεταποίησε στο «ποιός έγινε». Και όταν ο νομικός απάντησε: Αυτός που του έδειξε αγάπη, ο Χριστός του απάντησε: πήγαινε και κάνε και συ το ίδιο, δηλαδή γίνε πλησίον όλων με το να αγαπάς και να ελεείς, όπως ο Σαμαρείτης. Αυτό που θα ζεις κατ αυτό τον τρόπο, την αγάπη δηλαδή που θυσιάζεται, είναι η αιώνια ζωή. Αλληγορική ερμηνεία Ο καλός Σαμαρείτης δεν είναι άλλος από τον Κύριο μας Ιησού. Ήρθε στον κόσμο, έγινε άνθρωπος, δίδαξε και θαυματούργησε, σταυρώθηκε και αναστήθηκε και τέλος ίδρυσε την εκκλησία του, το μεγάλο τούτο πανδοχείο, από αγάπη και μόνο για εμάς. Για όλους εμάς τους ανθρώπους που ήμασταν πεσμένοι και πληγωμένοι από τους νοητούς ληστές, τους δαίμονες. Εκείνος μας αγάπησε, έσκυψε πάνω μας, έπλυνε τις πληγές και έδεσε τα τραύματα μας. Μας οδήγησε στην Εκκλησία του. Και από κει μας υποδέχεται στην ουράνια Βασιλεία του. 9

Did you know this about Memorial Services and Kolyva : Memorial services may not be chanted from the Saturday of Lazarus through the Sunday of Thomas on any Feast days of the Lord or any Feast days of the Theotokos. Koliva is boiled wheat with a combination of some or all of the following ingredients: powdered sugar, almonds, ground walnuts, sesame seeds, cinnamon, pomegranate seeds, raisins, anise, parsley and more. Koliva is made for memorials, typically on Saturdays of the Souls, and according to different traditions, the day of a Funeral, the 40 th day after death, 3 rd month, 6 th month, 9 th month, annually, and even sometimes just on big anniversaries only, such as 5 years, 10 years, etc. You may also have Kolyva on the funeral day but ONLY boiled wheat no sweetness is added. Sweetness is added on the 40day memorial and thereafter. In John s Gospel we find this quote, Christ said, Unless a wheat grain falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. (John 12:24) As Orthodox Christians we are awaiting the 2 nd Coming and the General Resurrection of the dead, through Christ we have Life! But, remembering the memory of our deceased beloved ones is an opportunity to pray for the souls of the departed as well as a way to help us heal from the death. 10
