But even more wondrous was that which followed on the eighth day when he was circumcised, that is, the day on which a male child receives his name. Those present called him Zacharias, the name of his father. But the mother said, "Not so, but he shall be called John." Since the child's father was unable to speak, he was asked, by means of a sign, to indicate the child's name. He then asked for a tablet and wrote, "His name is John." And immediately Zacharias' mouth was opened, his tongue was loosed from its silence of nine months, and filled with the Holy Spirit, he blessed the God of Israel, Who had fulfilled the promises made to their fathers, and had visited them that were sitting in darkness and the shadow of death, and had sent to them the light of salvation. Zacharias prophesied concerning the child also, saying that he would be a Prophet of the Most High and Forerunner of Jesus Christ. And the child John, who was filled with grace, grew and waxed strong in the Spirit; and he was in the wilderness until the day of his showing to Israel (Luke 1:57-80). His name is a variation of the Hebrew "Johanan," which means "Yah is gracious." 1
ΤΗΕ EPISTLE: The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Romans 13:11-14; 14:1-4 Brethren, salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed; the night is far gone, the day is at hand. Let us then cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; let us conduct ourselves becomingly as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarreling and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires. As for the man who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not for disputes over opinions. One believes he may eat anything, while the weak man eats only vegetables. Let not him who eats despise him who abstains, and let not him who abstains pass judgment on him who eats; for God has welcomed him. Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? THE GOSPEL: Nativity of the Forerunner John the Baptist The Gospel According to Luke 1:1-25, 57-68, 76-80 Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the things which have been accomplished among us, just as they were delivered to us by those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word, it seemed good to me also, having followed all things closely for some time past, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilos, that you may know the truth concerning the things of which you have been informed. In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zacharias, of the division of Abijah; and he had a wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and both were advanced in years. Now while he was serving as priest before God when his division was on duty, according to the custom of the priesthood, it fell to him by lot to enter the temple of the Lord and burn incense. And the whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense. And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. And Zacharias was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him. But the angel said to him, "Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your prayer is heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth; for he will be great before the Lord, and he shall drink no wine nor strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb. And he will turn many of the sons of Israel to the Lord their God, and he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready for the Lord a people prepared." And Zacharias said to the angel, "How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years." And the angel answered him, "I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God; and I was sent to speak to you, and to bring you this good news. And behold, you will be silent and unable to speak until the day that these things come to pass, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their 2
time." And the people were waiting for Zacharias, and they wondered at his delay in the temple. And when he came out, he could not speak to them, and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple; and he made signs to them and remained dumb. And when his time of service was ended, he went to his home. After these days his wife Elizabeth conceived, and for five months she hid herself, saying, "Thus the Lord has done to me in the days when he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men." Now the time came for Elizabeth to be delivered, and she gave birth to a son. And her neighbors and kinsfolk heard that the Lord had shown great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her. And on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they would have named him Zacharias after his father, but his mother said, "Not so; he shall be called John." And they said to her, "None of your kindred is called by this name." And they made signs to his father, inquiring what he would have him called. Tον καιρό, λοιπόν, του Hρώδη, του βασιλιά της Iουδαίας, ζούσε ένας ιερέας από την ιερατική τάξη του Aβιά, που λεγόταν Zαχαρίας και που η γυναίκα του προερχόταν από τους απογόνους του Aαρών και το όνομά της ήταν Eλισάβετ. Ήταν και οι δυο τους δίκαιοι μπροστά στο Θεό, καθώς ζούσαν άμεμπτοι μέσα στα όρια όλων των εντολών και των απαιτήσεων του Kυρίου. Aλλά δεν είχαν παιδί, γιατί η Eλισάβετ ήταν στείρα, ενώ και οι δυο τους ήταν προχωρημένης ηλικίας. Kάποτε, λοιπόν, ενώ εκτελούσε αυτός ιερατικά καθήκοντα έναντι του Θεού σαν ιερέας της τάξεως που είχε τη σειρά, σύμφωνα με τη συνήθεια του ιερατείου, έπεσε σ αυτόν ο κλήρος να μπει στο ναό του Kυρίου για να θυμιατίσει. Kι όλο το πλήθος του λαού προσευχόταν έξω την ώρα του θυμιάματος. Tότε εμφανίστηκε σ αυτόν ένας άγγελος του Kυρίου, που στεκόταν δεξιά από το θυσιαστήριο του θυμιάματος. Kαι μόλις τον είδε ο Zαχαρίας ταράχτηκε και τον κυρίευσε φόβος. Αλλ ο άγγελος του είπε: «Mη φοβάσαι Zαχαρία, γιατί η παράκλησή σου εισακούστηκε και η γυναίκα σου η Eλισάβετ θα σου γεννήσει γιο και θα τον ονομάσεις Iωάννη. Aυτός θα σου γίνει πηγή χαράς και αγαλλίασης και για τη γέννησή του πολλοί θα χαρούνε, γιατί θα είναι μεγάλος άνθρωπος του Kυρίου. Kρασί και μεθυστικά ποτά με κανέναν τρόπο δε θα πιει, αλλά θα γεμίσει με το Πνεύμα το Αγιο από την κοιλιά ακόμα της μάνας του. Kαι πολλούς από τους Iσραηλίτες θα τους στρέψει πάλι στον Kύριο το Θεό τους. Kι αυτός είναι που θα έρθει πριν από τον Kύριο με το πνεύμα και τη δύναμη του Hλία για να ξαναστρέψει την αγάπη γονιών προς τα παιδιά τους, για να δώσει σε ανυπόταχτους τη φρόνηση των δικαίων και να ετοιμάσει λαό προπαρασκευασμένο για τον Kύριο.» Eίπε τότε ο Zαχαρίας στον άγγελο: «Kαι πώς θα το ξέρω αυτό; Γιατί εγώ είμαι γέρος και η 3
γυναίκα μου προχωρημένης ηλικίας». Kι αποκρίθηκε ο άγγελος: «Eγώ είμαι ο Γαβριήλ, που βρίσκομαι στην υπηρεσία του Kυρίου δίπλα του, και με έστειλε σε σένα για να σου μιλήσω και να σου πω τα καλά αυτά νέα. Tώρα, λοιπόν, άκου! Θα μείνεις βουβός και δε θα μπορείς να μιλήσεις ως την ημέρα που θα γίνουν αυτά, επειδή δεν πίστεψες στα λόγια μου, τα οποία θα πραγματοποιηθούν στην ώρα τους». Στο μεταξύ, ο λαός περίμενε το Zαχαρία κι απορούσε για την αργοπορία του μέσα στο ναό. Kι όταν βγήκε δεν μπορούσε να τους μιλήσει. Tότε κατάλαβαν ότι είδε κάποιο όραμα μέσα στο ναό. Έτσι, εκείνος τους έκαμνε νοήματα και παρέμενε άλαλος. Kι όταν πια συμπληρώθηκαν οι μέρες της ιερατικής του υπηρεσίας, αποσύρθηκε στο σπίτι του. Ύστερα, λοιπόν, από τις μέρες αυτές έμεινε έγκυος η γυναίκα του η Eλισάβετ, η οποία κρυβόταν για πέντε μήνες λέγοντας: «M αυτόν τον τρόπο ενέργησε ο Kύριος, που έστρεψε το βλέμμα του πάνω μου για να απαλείψει τη ντροπή που ένιωθα ανάμεσα στους ανθρώπους». Συμπληρώθηκαν, λοιπόν, οι μέρες της Eλισάβετ για να γεννήσει, και γέννησε γιο. Στο μεταξύ, άκουσαν οι γείτονες και οι συγγενείς της πως ο Kύριος της έδειξε πολύ μεγάλο έλεος και συμμετείχαν στη χαρά της. Kι όταν έφτασε η όγδοη μέρα, ήρθαν να κάνουν περιτομή στο παιδί και το αποκαλούσαν το παιδί Zαχαρία, επειδή αυτό ήταν το όνομα του πατέρα του. Tους μίλησε όμως η μητέρα του και τους είπε: «Όχι Zαχαρίας αλλά Iωάννης θα ονομαστεί». Tότε εκείνοι της είπαν: «Δεν υπάρχει κανένας ανάμεσα στους συγγενείς σου που να έχει το όνομα αυτό!» Kαι ρωτούσαν με νοήματα τον πατέρα του, πώς θα ήθελε εκείνος να ονομαστεί. Eκείνος τότε ζήτησε μια μικρή πλάκα κι έγραψε: «Iωάννης είναι το όνομά του». Kι όλοι απόρησαν. Kι ακριβώς τη στιγμή εκείνη αφαιρέθηκε ο φραγμός από το στόμα και τη γλώσσα του κι άρχισε να μιλάει δοξολογώντας το Θεό! Φόβος κυρίευσε τότε όλους εκείνους που κατοικούσαν στις γύρω περιοχές, και σε όλη την ορεινή περιοχή της Iουδαίας συζητούσαν όλα αυτά τα γεγονότα. Kι όλοι όσοι τα άκουσαν, τα φύλαγαν μέσα στην καρδιά τους λέγοντας: «Tι πρόκειται άραγε να γίνει το παιδί αυτό;» Kαι το χέρι του Kυρίου ήταν μαζί του. Στο μεταξύ, ο Zαχαρίας, ο πατέρας του, γέμισε από Πνεύμα γιο και προφήτεψε λέγοντας: «Eυλογητός ο Kύριος, ο Θεός του Iσραήλ, γιατί επισκέφτηκε το λαό του και του πρόσφερε λύτρωση.» «Kι εσύ, παιδάκι, προφήτης του Yψίστου θα ονομαστείς, γιατί θα προπορευτείς πριν από τον Kύριο, για να προετοιμάσεις τα μονοπάτια του. για να μεταδώσεις τη γνώση της σωτηρίας στο λαό του με τη συγχώρηση των αμαρτιών τους, χάρη στα πιο βαθιά αισθήματα ελέους του Θεού μας, με τα οποία μας επισκέφθηκε ανατολή από τον ουρανό: Για να φωτίσει αυτούς που κάθονται στο σκοτάδι και σε σκιά θανάτου. Για να κατευθύνει τα πόδια μας στο δρόμο της ειρήνης». Why Does It Take So Long? Orthodoxy Way of Life So often, with great expectations, we will renew our commitment to the Orthodox Way of Life by making significant changes in our life and how we spend our time. We will increase our time in prayer, participate more regularly in services and sacraments, begin to read Scripture and the lives of the saints daily. Yet, we find we are still confronted with the same desires and distractions that keep us separated from God. We expect instant success and we do not find it. We grumble that we followed the instruction from a wise elder yet do not experience any improvement in our relationship with God. Why do we expect such instant success? Why is it so difficult? Saint Theophan says speaking to one of his spiritual children, "I cannot in any way suppose that your success to have been complete as soon as you began, that your thoughts would be pure, and feelings and desires holy. This is because it never happens like this to any body. The thoughts will be pacified, the passionate impulses of feelings and desires will become less frequent. All the same, however, they will erupt and sometimes wit great force. As he says our thoughts are not pure and desires not holy. We also have unreasonable expectations. We are only beginning to overcome our passions and must be patient and persistent. One thing that is very important is to be humble and remember it is God's will that is to work through us and not just our own efforts. To often we think we are the doer rather than humbling ourselves to the truth in the work of His grace. Our task is to follow Grace and not try to force and direct it as our will demands. We must strip ourselves of all pious pretenses and self-will. Saint Theophan advises, Do not try to conceal yourself, covering your nakedness with a fig leaf and hiding in the bushes from the Lord, who comes to you in the conscience and exposes you. Blame yourself completely, and ask forgiveness without placing blame on anyone else. The essence of a true spiritual life is humility. This involves a life where we are continually recognizing the dominating power of our own will and our limitations in doing what is God's will for us. Jesus calls us to be perfect, but too often we assume we are already perfect when we are far from what he has taught us to become. Then we too often make the mistake of thinking we can do it through our own power by saying these prayers, or fasting in this way and so forth. Our spiritual practice is only an aid for us to open our heart to the reality of our condition so that we will fall down in front of God and ask for His forgiveness and help and allow His grace to flow through us. In this way our thoughts can become pure and our desires holy. Our spiritual life involves daily effort. Saint Hesychius says, At every hour we must weigh our daily affairs attentively, and as much as we are able, without fail lighten their burden through repentance, if we want to overcome the passions with the help of Jesus. It is also necessary to examine whether we carry out all our outward actions through God's will, before God and for God Alone, so that the feelings (passionate) do not deceive us like foolish people. Keep up your spiritual practices as called for in an Orthodox way of life. But do it with complete humility and a spirit of repentance. 5

Η σωτηρία του κόσμου Η Εκκλησία μας στις 24 Ιουνίου τιμά το γενέθλιον του Αγίου Ιωάννου του Βαπτιστού, ο οποίος υπήρξε ο Πρόδρομος της παρουσίας του Ιησού Χριστού στον κόσμο και ο προάγγελος της σωτηρίας του ανθρωπίνου γένους. Το αποστολικό ανάγνωσμα της ημέρας είναι ίδιο με εκείνο της Κυριακής της Τυροφάγου και προέρχεται από την προς Ρωμαίους Επιστολή του Αποστόλου Παύλου. Η περικοπή αναφέρεται στην εγγύτητα της Δευτέρας Παρουσίας του Κυρίου, γεγονός που απαιτεί εντατικότερη προσπάθεια και αγώνα από τους πιστούς, ώστε να είναι έτοιμοι όταν έλθει ο Κύριος. Η επιλογή του συγκεκριμένου αποστολικού αναγνώσματος κατά την εορτή του Τιμίου Προδρόμου δεν είναι τυχαία. Το κήρυγμα του Τιμίου Προδρόμου είχε κατεξοχήν εσχατολογικό χαρακτήρα και συνοψιζόταν μέσα σε λίγες λέξεις: «μετανοείτε ήγγικεν γαρ η βασιλεία των ουρανών» (Ματθ.3,2). Αυτή την ίδια εσχατολογική διάσταση δίνει και ο Απόστολος Παύλος στο παρόν αποστολικό ανάγνωσμα. Ο χρόνος και η ιστορία της ανθρωπότητας καθώς προχωρούν μας φέρνουν πιο κοντά στην Παρουσία του Κυρίου. Ο Απόστολος Παύλος χωρίς να επιθυμεί να προσδιορίσει χρονικά τη δεύτερη έλευση του Χριστού, άλλωστε το απροσδιόριστο του χρόνου της δευτέρας παρουσίας το διεκήρυξε ο ίδιος ο Ιησούς Χριστός: «περί δε της ημέρας εκείνης και ώρας ουδείς οίδεν, ουδέ οι άγγελοι των ουρανών, ει μη ο πατήρ μου μόνος» (Ματθ. 24,36), προτρέπει τους πιστούς σε εγρήγορση και αναμονή της ημέρα εκείνης. Όσο περνά ο χρόνος της παρούσας ζωής, τόσο και πλησιάζουμε προς την έλευση του Κυρίου. Η δεύτερη έλευση του Χριστού θα σημάνει την ώρα της πλήρους συμμετοχής των πιστών στο μυστήριο της σωτηρίας. Η σωτηρία αποτελεί βέβαια γεγονός από τη στιγμή της βάπτισης κάθε ανθρώπου, ωστόσο η πληρότητά της θα επέλθει με την έλευση της ημέρας του Κυρίου. Επομένως ο κάθε πιστός ζει και πορεύεται στην παρούσα ζωή, αναμένοντας την ένδοξη έλευση του Κυρίου, κατά την οποία προσδοκά να κληρονομήσει τη βασιλεία του Θεού. Η παρούσα ζωή παρομοιάζεται από τον Παύλο ως «νυξ», επειδή βρίσκεται υπό την επήρεια της αμαρτίας που συμβολίζεται με το σκοτάδι. Η μέλλουσα ζωή αντίστοιχα παρομοιάζεται με «ημέρα», γιατί κατ αυτήν θα επικρατήσει το φως της βασιλείας του Θεού. Οφείλουν λοιπόν οι πιστοί να απορρίψουν τα «έργα του σκότους», δηλαδή την αμαρτία και να ενδυθούν «τα όπλα του φωτός», τα χαρίσματα δηλαδή του Αγίου Πνεύματος. Ο ίδιος ο Ιησούς Χριστός είναι το ένδυμα του πιστού από την ώρα της βάπτισής του. Από τη στιγμή που ο Χριστός ενοικεί μέσα στον πιστό άνθρωπο, τότε το θέλημά του συνταυτίζεται με το θέλημα του Κυρίου και άρα «τα έργα του σκότους» δεν είναι δυνατόν να συνυπάρξουν με «τα έργα του φωτός». Η σωτηρία του ανθρώπου στηρίζεται στην πίστη του Ιησού Χριστού, και όχι στις διάφορες τυπικές και νομικές διατάξεις. Πολλοί χριστιανοί που ανήκαν προηγουμένως στην Ιουδαϊκή θρησκεία, εξακολουθούσαν να τηρούν ορισμένες διατάξεις του Μωσαϊκού νόμου. Μια από αυτές ήταν και η διάκριση των τροφών σε «καθαρές» και «ακάθαρτες». Έτσι επιδίωκαν να απέχουν από τις «ακάθαρτες» τροφές όπως το κρέας και το κρασί από φόβο μήπως επιδράσουν στην ηθική τους κατάσταση ή από την επιθυμία τους να φθάσουν σε ψηλότερα μέτρα αγιότητας από τους άλλους. Ο Παύλος κρίνοντας τα ζητήματα αυτά δευτερεύοντα ως προς την ουσία τους, συνιστά από τη μια ο καθένας να πράττει σύμφωνα με τις προσωπικές του πεποιθήσεις και από την άλλη «ασθενείς» και «δυνατοί» να αποφεύγουν τη μεταξύ τους κατάκριση, η οποία δημιουργούσε εντάσεις και φιλονικίες. Η κατάσταση αυτή επηρέαζε αρνητικά τις σχέσεις των χριστιανών και δημιουργούσε πρόβλημα στην ενότητα της εκκλησιαστικής κοινότητας. Οι «δυνατοί» που έτρωγαν τα πάντα ενέπαιζαν και εξουθένωναν τους «ασθενείς» που δεν έτρωγαν. Από την άλλη πλευρά οι «ασθενείς» κατέκριναν τους «δυνατούς» ως παραβάτες του νόμου. Ο Παύλος επισημαίνει ότι είναι ανεπίτρεπτο γεγονός η κατάκριση των αδελφών. Ο κάθε πιστός είναι δούλος Κυρίου και ανήκει σε αυτόν, όποια και αν είναι η πνευματική του κατάσταση. Ο καθένας «στήκει ή πίπτει τω ιδίω Κυρίω», γι αυτό η κατάκριση δεν έχει θέση μεταξύ των πιστών. Ακόμα 10
και αυτός που «πίπτει» θα σταθεί στη συνέχεια, γιατί ο Θεός έχει τη δύναμη να τον ανορθώσει. Επομένως κανένας δεν έχει το δικαίωμα να κρίνει τον άλλο, έστω και αν έχει πέσει, έστω και αν ζει μέσα στην αμαρτία και την αμετανοησία, γιατί πάντοτε υπάρχει η δυνατότητα της ανόρθωσής του με την σωστική παρέμβαση του παντοδύναμου Θεού. Το χαρακτηριστικό γνώρισμα της ζωής ενός πιστού ανθρώπου είναι η εν Χριστώ αγάπη. Μια αγάπη που αγκαλιάζει τον κάθε άνθρωπο, είτε αυτός είναι «δυνατός», είτε είναι «ασθενής» στην πίστη. Ακόμα αγκαλιάζει και εκείνον που δεν πιστεύει στον Χριστό και την Εκκλησία. Η αγάπη του Χριστού δεν έχει όρια, ούτε προϋποθέσεις. Αυτό άλλωστε έκανε και ο Τίμιος Πρόδρομος, απηύθυνε το κήρυγμά του σε όλους ανεξαιρέτως, αγωνιώντας για την σωτηρία ακόμα και των εχθρών του. Αυτή είναι η σωστή διάσταση του κηρύγματος της Εκκλησίας. Η Εκκλησία κηρύττει την σωτηρία του κόσμου που προσφέρεται από τον Ιησού Χριστό. Η σωτηρία του ανθρωπίνου γένους είναι ήδη γεγονός, αλλά αναμένεται η τελική επικράτησή της με την Δευτέρα Παρουσία του Κυρίου. Η ζωή και η πορεία των πιστών μέσα στον κόσμο λαμβάνει την εσχατολογική διάσταση της ζωής του Τιμίου Προδρόμου, αλλά και όλων των Αγίων που ποθούσαν την έλευση του Κυρίου και την επικράτηση της Βασιλείας του Θεού. CONTINUE YOUR OFFERINGS THROUGH THE SUMMER Message from Parish Council Treasurer Toula Mancini We wait all year for summer. Then we fill them with vacations at the beach, camping trips in the woods and flying to Greece or far-off places. It s no wonder that church attendance dips in the summer. But while you are relaxing, your church continues to be busy with regular worship, social activities, caring for sick and the homebound members, planning weddings, baptisms and funerals, and ministering to the hungry and homeless in your community. And your clergy and church staff still need to be paid, as does the electric company. So, here s the problem: The bills continue to roll in even when you re away, and many stewards have not planned to keep their offerings current when they are on vacation. That s why so many churches face a cash crunch in the summer months. But here are some ideas for how to help Your church Saint George maintain its finances in the summer months. Pay it forward Your church would love to receive your summer offerings or part of them in advance. If you know you re going to be away, plan ahead by offering more in the weeks in advance of your time away from church. Make it up Alternatively, when you get back from your time away, give a little more in the weeks that follow in order to make up for the lost weeks. Use your envelopes Are you a check-writing person? Then simply fill in advance your offering envelopes with your weekly gift. If you have a check in every envelope, then on any given Sunday you need only to bring that day s envelope and whatever earlier Sunday envelopes are there. Also, envelopes can be mailed directly to Saint George Greek Orthodox Church 9426 Little Road New Port Richey, FL 34654. Use banking bill pay Lots of people find online banking services a convenient way to pay their monthly car loan, mortgage, light bill and other routine expenses. Why not your church offering, too? Many online banking services will cut a check and send it to the church for you. 14

Η ΘΕΙΑ ΚΟΙΝΩΝΙΑ Η Θεία Κοινωνία προσφέρεται στην Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία μόνο στα άτομα που βαφτίστηκαν στην Ορθόδοξη Πίστη. Για να συμμετάσχεις στην Θεία Κοινωνία, πρέπει να είσαι σε καλή κατάσταση με την Εκκλησία πνευματικά (για παράδειγμα, οι παντρεμένοι άνθρωποι πρέπει να έχει ευλογηθεί ο γάμος τους στην Εκκλησία και όλοι πρέπει να είναι χωρίς σοβαρή αμαρτία στις καρδιές τους). GUIDELINES FOR RECEIVING HOLY COMMUNION Holy Communion is offered in the Orthodox Church only to those individuals baptized and Chrismated (confirmed) in the Orthodox Faith. To participate in Holy Communion one must be in good standing with the Church spiritually (for example, married people must have had their marriage blessed in the Church and all must be without grave sin on their hearts). For all Orthodox Christians, the proper preparation for Holy Communion must be observed: examination of conscience, confession, reading the prayers for Holy Communion, and the proper fasting. If you have any further questions about this, please speak with the clergy. Women should remove all lipstick when approaching for Holy Communion.
