Let the Heavens rejoice; let the earthly things be glad; for the Lord has wrought might with His arm, He has trampled upon death by death. The first-born of the dead has He become. From the belly of Hades He has delivered us, and has granted to the world great mercy. As a pillar unshakable of the Church of Christ, and an ever-radiant lamp to the universe, were you, O wise Haralambos; you illumined the world through martyrdom; you dispelled the moonless night of the idols, o blessed one. Therefore with boldness before Christ, intercede that we may be saved. A protection of Christians unshamable, intercessor to our Holy Maker unwavering. Reject not the voices of sinners in prayer; instead, come, for you are good, to the aid of us who in faith cry out to you. Hasten in intercession, and hurry in supplication O Theotokos, as the protectress for all ηime of those who honor you. HOLY TAXIARHAI AND SAINT HARALAMBOS GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH 7373 CALDWELL AVENUE, NILES, ILLINOIS 60714 -- PHONE (847) 647-8880 Web: SaintHaralambosGOC.org Fr. Constantine P. Botsis, Proistamenos Fr. Chrysanthos Kerkeres, Synefemerios Deacon John G. Suhayda, Pastoral Assistant Nick Harisiadis, Protopsaltis Weekly Bulletin for October 10 - October 17, 2010 St. Theophanes the Confessor and Hymnographer, Bishop of Nicea (Commemorated October 11) St. Theophanes was the younger brother of the St Theodore the Branded (December 27). The brothers received an excellent education and were particularly involved in philosophy. Striving towards the knowledge of God, they settled in the Lavra of St Sava. Here St Theophanes was tonsured, and later became a priestmonk. The holy brothers were famed as advocates of icon veneration. They boldly fulfilled the mission entrusted them by the Patriarch of Jerusalem and went to Constantinople to denounce the iconoclast emperor Leo the Armenian (813-820). Afterwards, they also denounced the iconoclast emperors Michael Balbos (820-829) and Theophilos (829-842). The saints had to endure imprisonment, hunger, even torture. The emperor Theophilos gave orders to inscribe a phrase insulting to the glorious confessors upon their faces with red-hot needles. Therefore, they are called "Branded". "Write whatever you wish, but at the Last Judgment you shall read your own writing," said the agonized brothers to the emperor. They sent Theodore to prison, where also he died (+ 833), but Theophanes was sent into exile. With the restoration of Icon veneration St Theophanes was returned from exile and consecrated Bishop of Nicea. The saint wrote about 150 canons, among which is a beautiful canon in defense of holy icons. He died peacefully around the year 850. Wisdom from the Church Fathers Let us consider, then, brethren, of what matter we were formed, who we are, and with what nature we came into the world, and how He Who formed and created us brought us into His world from the darkness of a grave, and prepared his benefits for us before we were born. Since, therefore, we have everything from Him, we ought in everything to give Him thanks, to Whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen. + St. Clement of Rome + Visit our shiny new website at SaintHaralambosgoc.org

News and Reminders The St. Haralambos PreSchool PTA invites you to our Coffee Fellowship after today s church services! PROSPHORA We thank Mrs. Hareklia Vranas, Dina Margaritis, and Zoi Govis, who have offered today s prosphora. Next week, the prosphora will be offered by Mrs. Loretta Hughes Politis, the Kanelos family, and the Loomos family (Sun, Oct 17). MEMORIAL SERVICES There are certain Sundays when Memorial Services are not done. Please contact the church office before planning Memorial Services. Please also remember that we have discontinued the custom of placing candles in the kolyva. SACRAMENTAL REGISTRY Congratulations to:..mr. and Mrs. Demetrios Markos on the Baptism of their daughter yesterday at our church...mr. and Mrs. Evan Houpis on the Baptism of their daughter this afternoon at our church. ΝΑ ΖΗOYN! WHO CAN RECEIVE HOLY COMMUNION? Because receiving Holy Communion and any other Sacraments is an expression of our acceptance of the dogmatic and moral teachings of the Orthodox Church, only Orthodox Christians (by baptism or chrismation) in good standing may participate. For this reason, persons who do not agree with these teachings, or not in good standing (for example, married outside the church, or unmarried but sexually active, or civilly divorced but not ecclesiastically divorced), must return to good standing in order to participate in the Sacramental life of the Church. For the same reasons, Orthodox Christians cannot receive sacraments in non-orthodox churches. Anyone having questions is urged to discuss them with their priest. STEWARDSHIP AND TITHING IN 2010 Have you become a Steward for 2010 yet? Your Stewardship participation is very important for the well-being of our church; it is our greatest source of financial support! Heartfelt and conscientious Stewardship ensures that our church will be strong and able to minister to the needs of our children and friends, as well as all who turn to the Church for blessings, help and guidance. Stewardship is an expression of our love and appreciation to God for the many blessings we receive.. In return, let us become not only worthy takers but worthy givers! CHURCH ETIQUETTE CORNER: It is proper to remain standing while people are receiving Holy Communion. It is a sacred moment for our brothers and sisters; a time we should be praying for one another, rather than relaxing. In consideration of others, if you wear lipstick, please do not leave smudges when reverencing the holy icons or receiving Holy Communion. Please teach your children that it is not appropriate to chew gum or to cross their legs in church. Please avoid standing in front of the window of the children s room, because the children are prevented from viewing the church services. Please refrain from bringing food or beverages into the church. Right after Church Services Next Sunday, A Dinner for our Community! Delicious German Food, German beer and Fun! Plan to join us! October 17 A free will offering will be accepted. Please remember to silence your cell phone during Church services.

INCLUSION AWARENESS DAY The Standing Conference of Canonical Orthodox Bishops in the America (SCOBA) has designated October 10, 2010 as Inclusion Awareness Day. The goal is to enrich our communities by becoming more aware of the ways that all persons can be included to participate in the community s life and activities. Let today become a beginning of a constant effort to offer inclusion, not rejection to persons who often do not feel they can be included in our worship, activities and the fullness of life in our Holy Church. In this spirit, we offer these Guidelines and Courtesies for interacting with persons with disabilities: When talking to a person with a disability, speak directly to him or her rather than through a companion or sign language interpreter. Don t assume that a person accompanying someone in a wheelchair is an attendant; they may be a friend or partner. If you would normally shake hands with people you meet, offer your hand to someone with a disability as well. If they are unable to shake your hand, they will tell you. Be considerate of the extra time it might take a person with a disability to get things done or said. Let the person set the pace in walking and talking. When talking with a person who speaks slowly or with great effort, never pretend to understand if you are having trouble doing so. Ask them to repeat what you did not understand or ask if writing notes would be okay. Leaning on a person s wheelchair is similar to leaning or hanging on a person. The wheelchair is part of the individual s personal space. If conversing for more than a few minutes, place yourself at their eye level to spare both of you a stiff neck. When speaking with a person who is blind or has low vision, always remember to identify yourself; introduce others with you and indicate when you move from one place to another and when the conversation is at an end. It is alright to offer assistance, but wait until your offer is accepted before you help. Do not feel obligated to act as caregiver. And do not feel offended if the person declines your offer. When offering to guide a person who is blind or has low vision, allow that person to take your arm. This will enable them to easily follow your lead, even up or down curbs or stairs. Use specific directions/distances, such as left/ 3 steps away. You can also use clock position when directing a person: for example, the drinking fountain is at 1 o clock. Service animals are working and should not be touched, petted or played with unless you have permission form their owner. It is better to not even ask. Always face a person who is deaf or hard of hearing and when in doubt, ask if it would be alright to write it out. Speaking loudly does not mean you will be heard. When planning events which involve people with disabilities, be aware of their needs (accessible rest-room, level entries, Braille signage, etc.) in choosing locations and modes of transportation. If you are ever unsure about what to say or do, just ask. More often than not, a person with a disability will be happy to let you know what they prefer.

INCLUSION AWARENESS DAY Basic Guidelines for using words and phrases that are more appropriate when talking with or about people with disabilities. Do not refer to a person s disability unless it is relevant. Most people with disabilities prefer person-first terminology, such as person who is blind or people with disabilities since this acknowledges them as people first, rather than their disability first. Avoid referring to groups of people by their condition or disability such as the blind, the deaf, etc. Avoid sensational descriptive words when referring to a person s disability, such as suffers from, is a victim of, is afflicted with. Use disabled, disability or accessible rather than handicapped. Avoid condescending euphemisms such as differently abled, physically challenged mentally different, or handicapped. Avoid portraying people with disabilities as overly courageous, brave or special. This implies that it is unusual for people with disabilities to be independent or competent. Never say anything that you would not want said to or about yourself. <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> DO SAY DON T SAY - person with a disability, or has a disability - the disabled, handicapped, crippled, people with disabilities invalid, sick, deformed or gimp - uses wheelchair, uses assistive device, - wheelchair bound, confined to a wheel uses crutches, uses walker, etc. chair - birth irregularity, congenital disability - birth defect, birth affliction or deformed birth injury - person with a physical disability - crippled, lame, deformed - person who is deaf, hard of hearing - the deaf, hearing impaired, deaf, mute - has a speech disability, unable to speak - has a speech defect - person who is blind, has low vision - the blind, blind people, visually impaired - person with an intellectual, cognitive, - stupid, retarded, slow, birth defect, disability mentally deficient, mentally challenged - person with epilepsy, seizure disorder - epileptic, has fits, spastic - person with psychiatric disability - crazy, nuts Epistle and Gospel Readings for Today EPISTLE READING Galatians 1:11-19 BRETHREN, I would have you know that the gospel which was preached by me is not man's gospel. For I did not receive it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through a revelation of Jesus Christ. For you have heard of my former life in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God violently and tried to destroy it; and I advanced in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people, so extremely zealous was I for the traditions of my fathers. But when he who had set me apart before I was born, and had called me through his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son to me, in order that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not confer with flesh and blood, nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but I went away into Arabia; and again I returned to Damascus. Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas, and remained with him fifteen days. But I saw none of the other apostles except James the Lord's brother. GOSPEL READING Luke 7:11-16 At that time, Jesus went to a city called Nain, and his disciples and a great crowd went with him. As he drew near to the gate of the city, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow; and a large crowd from the city was with her. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, "Do not weep." And he came and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, "Young man, I say to you, arise." And the dead man sat up, and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother. Fear seized them all; and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has arisen among us!" and "God has visited his people!"
