Ἀδελφοί, γνωρίζω δὲ ὑμῖν, ἀδελφοί, τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τὸ εὐαγγελισθὲν ὑπʼ ἐμοῦ, ὅτι οὐκ ἔστιν κατὰ ἄνθρωπον. Οὐδὲ γὰρ ἐγὼ παρὰ ἀνθρώπου παρέλαβον αὐτό, οὔτε ἐδιδάχθην, ἀλλὰ διʼ ἀποκαλύψεως Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ. When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before him, and said with a loud voice, "What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beseech you, do not torment me." For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many a time it had seized him; he was kept under guard, and bound with chains and fetters, but he broke the bonds and was driven by the demon into the desert.) Jesus then asked him, "What is your name?" And he said, "Legion"; for many demons had entered him. And they begged him not to command them to depart into the abyss. Now a large herd of swine was feeding there on the hillside; and they begged him to let them enter these. So he gave them leave. Then the demons came out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned. When the herdsmen saw what happened, they fled, and told it in the city and in the country. Then people went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had gone, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. And those who had seen it told them how he who had been possessed with demons was healed. Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gadarenes asked him to depart from them; for they were seized with great fear; so he got into the boat and returned. The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him; but he sent him away, saying, "Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you." And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him. REFLECTIONS ON TODAY'S GOSPEL READING: Luke 8:26-39 There is a television show called "Extreme Makeover Home Edition". It is a show where a construction crew comes into a home and does a complete renovation, usually for a low income family or a family that has seen other hardships. There is nothing new about extreme makeovers. In fact, Jesus performed many extreme makeovers in the Bible. We heard one such makeover in the reading we heard from Luke 8:26-39 earlier in this morning's gospel reading. When Jesus healed the demon-possessed man, he was no longer shameless. He was clothed. He had a sense of what was decent and proper. In other words, he had morals. The man was in his right mind. He saw the world as it was a world with both enemies and friends. It doesn t matter what they are or how severe they are. Jesus has the power to overcome our demons. The story of Jesus and the demon-possessed man is an example of spiritual warfare. Jesus declared war on Satan and his demons. The Bible doesn't tell us much about demons, but it tells us enough. They are real and they deal in fear and deception. They are opposed to God and everything he does. We do not have to fear demons because we have faith in God's power. All of us have our own inner demons, but they usually are not as severe as those who controlled the man. Our demons include possessiveness, hoarding things, extreme individualism, self-centeredness, racial prejudice, homophobia or exclusiveness. They could be spiritual questions, family secrets, health issues or anything else. They exist in the minds of perverts, rapists, murderers, child molesters, other criminals and anyone who thinks, does or speaks evil. To be possessed is culturally acceptable, and to be demon-free goes against our culture. That is scary because it goes against the status quo. When demons control us, we are not ourselves because we are not in control. In contrast, sin is what we do because we are in control of our lives. The freedom demons offer is a false freedom because it dehumanizes and isolates its victims. Just look at how the demon-possessed man was treated. He was isolated from the community by having to live in the cemetery. He was isolated when the townspeople tried to confine him in chains. This story reveals the emphasis that Luke's Gospel places on salvation. It shows the depth of human suffering into which God's salvation can reach. Jesus seeks out the oppressed, understands their plight, redirects their rage and reincorporates them into the community. Jesus' power is greater than all the forces in the world. Jesus never went out looking for demons, but when he found them he dealt with them immediately and severely. We do not have to go looking for demons. We need to keep our eyes fixed on God.

6η Κυριακή τού Λουκά 8:26-39 Ο διάβολος παραμορφώνει Μόλις έφτασε ο Κύριος στη χώρα των Γαδαρηνών, Τον συνάντησε κάποιος άνθρωπος που είχε κυριευθεί από πολλά δαιμόνια επί πολλά χρόνια και είχε καταντήσει θηρίο ανήμερο. Δεν φορούσε ρούχα, δεν έμενε σε σπίτι, τριγυρνούσε στα μνήματα. Και επειδή τα δαιμόνια τον έφερναν σε κατάσταση αγριότητας, τον έδεναν οι άνθρωποι με αλυσίδες βαριές να μην κάνει κανένα κακό. Αλλά αυτός τις έσπαζε και εξαγριωμένος σερνόταν βίαια από τους δαίμονες στις ερημιές. Αυτό το «αγρίμι» λοιπόν που τρομοκρατούσε τον κόσμο, τώρα τρομοκρατήθηκε καθώς αντίκρισε τον Κύριο, κι από το φόβο του έβγαλε δυνατή κραυγή. Κι αφού έπεσε μπροστά στα πόδια του Χριστού, φώναξε δυνατά: Ποια σχέση υπάρχει ανάμεσα σε μένα και σε σένα, Ιησού, Υιέ του Θεού του υψίστου; Σε παρακαλώ, μη με βασανίσεις και με κλείσεις από τώρα στα σκοτάδια του Άδη. Ποιο είναι το όνομά σου; Τον ρώτησε ο Κύριος. Λεγεών, απάντησε, δηλαδή ταξιαρχία. Διότι είχε μέσα του χιλιάδες δαιμόνια. Τότε τα δαιμόνια αυτά άρχισαν να παρακαλούν και πάλι τον Κύριο να μην τους στείλει στα τρίσβαθα του Άδη. Αλλά καθώς υπήρχε εκεί κοντά στο βουνό ένα κοπάδι από πολλούς χοίρους που έβοσκαν, Τον παρακαλούσαν να τους επιτρέψει να μπουν στα ζώα αυτά. Ο Κύριος τους το επέτρεψε, το θέμα ήταν φρικτό: μόλις τα δαιμόνια βγήκαν από τον άνθρωπο και μπήκαν στους χοίρους, το κοπάδι όρμησε με ασυγκράτητη μανία προς το γκρεμό. Τα ζώα με ορμή έπεσαν από ψηλά κάτω στη λίμνη και πνίγηκαν όλα. Μέσα από το εκπληκτικό αυτό θαύμα μπορεί να δει κανείς σε ποια κατάσταση οδηγεί ο διάβολος κάθε άνθρωπο που κυριεύει. Τα ακάθαρτα πνεύματα όταν εισέρχονται στον άνθρωπο, του σαλεύουν το νου και την ψυχή, τον απογυμνώνουν απ τη χάρη του Θεού. Τον καθιστούν ακυβέρνητο, κτηνώδη και δαιμονιώδη. Τον απομονώνουν από τους συγγενείς και φίλους. Τον οδηγούν στους τόπους της φρίκης και του θανάτου. Διότι οι δαίμονες, επειδή μισούν τον Θεό και τον άνθρωπο, αισθάνονται μεγάλη ηδονή να ταλαιπωρούν τα όντα του Θεού και να τα οδηγούν στο θάνατο. Το καταχθόνιο αυτό έργο τους το επιτελούν όχι μόνο στους δαιμονισμένους αλλά σε κάθε άνθρωπο. Ενώ όμως όλοι μας ξέρουμε πόσο μεγάλο κακό προξενούν στον άνθρωπο και με πόσο φοβερή πανουργία μας πολεμούν, πώς κάποιες φορές γινόμαστε θύματα των πονηρών δαιμόνων και του αρχηγού τους διαβόλου, του αοράτου εχθρού μας; Πώς δελεαζόμαστε από τις υποσχέσεις του, πώς παρασυρόμαστε και γινόμαστε σκλάβοι στα πάθη και στην εξουσία του; Ας προσέξουμε πολύ, διότι κινδυνεύουμε. Μη δίνουμε δικαιώματα στον διάβολο, θα μας καταστρέψει χωρίς να το πάρουμε είδηση. Θα μας απομακρύνει από το δρόμο του Θεού και θα μας οδηγήσει στην αιώνια απώλεια. Όλα στην εξουσία του Χριστού Μετά το θαύμα άλλαξαν πλέον όλα. Το μανιασμένο «αγρίμι» έγινε ταπεινός μαθητής του Κυρίου. Τρομοκρατημένοι οι χοιροβοσκοί έτρεξαν στην πόλη και ανήγγειλαν το φοβερό γεγονός. Κι άρχισαν οι κάτοικοι της περιοχής να βγαίνουν έκπληκτοι να δουν τι έγινε. Μόλις όμως αντίκρισαν τον πρώην δαιμονισμένο να κάθεται ήρεμα δίπλα στον Κύριο ντυμένο και μυαλωμένο, φοβήθηκαν. Και όλοι με μία φωνή, αντί να ζητήσουν από τον Κύριο να μείνει κοντά τους, Τον παρακάλεσαν να φύγει από τον τόπο τους επειδή κυριεύθηκαν από τρόμο, επειδή φοβήθηκαν μην τιμωρηθούν κι αυτοί για τις ανομίες τους, διότι το χοιρεμπόριο τότε ήταν παράνομο. Και ο Κύριος έφυγε από κοντά τους. Αντίθετα ο άνθρωπος που θεραπεύτηκε Τον παρακαλούσε να μένει μαζί του. Ο Χριστός όμως του είπε: Γύρισε στο σπίτι σου για να διηγείσαι τις ευεργεσίες που σου έκανε ο Θεός. Κι εκείνος έγινε με το λόγο του και με τη ζωή του μάρτυρας της αγάπης του Κυρίου. Έγινε ένα φωτεινό παράδειγμα στον τόπο του, ο πρώην δαιμονισμένος έγινε φορέας της χάριτος του Χριστού. Αυτός που απέφευγε κάθε ανθρώπινη κοινωνία έγινε κήρυκας της δυνάμεως του Κυρίου. Όλα αυτά τι μαρτυρούν; Ότι όλες οι δυνάμεις του σκότους βρίσκονται κάτω από τον έλεγχο και την εξουσία του Κυρίου. Και ότι ο Χριστός μας είναι ο παντοδύναμος εξουσιαστής των πάντων. Μπροστά του τρέμουν οι δαίμονες, εξαφανίζονται. Σ αυτή λοιπόν τη δαιμονοκρατούμενη εποχή που ζούμε, όπου πολλοί άνθρωποι παραμορφώνονται παρασυρμένοι από την αρπακτική μανία του διαβόλου, εμείς οι πιστοί Χριστιανοί δεν πρέπει να φοβόμαστε, να αγωνιούμε. Στα χέρια του Χριστού είναι η ιστορία του κόσμου και η δική μας. Αυτός κυβερνά τα σύμπαντα, στα χέρια του είναι η ζωή μας. Ο διάβολος δεν έχει καμία εξουσία επάνω μας, εάν εμείς δεν του τη δώσουμε με την συγκατάθεσή μας. Ας εμπιστευόμαστε λοιπόν τη ζωή μας στον βασιλέα της κτίσεως Κύριο Ιησού, ζώντας μέσα στη χάρη των ιερών Μυστηρίων, για να ασφαλιζόμαστε κάτω από την κραταιά εξουσία του και να πλημμυρίζουμε από το φως του.
