Demetrios Kounavis Parish Priest Sunday, October 2, 2016 Second Sunday of Luke The Holy Hieromartyr Cyprian and the Virgin Martyr Justina - October 2 Saint Justina who was from Damascus, lived in virginity for the sake of Christ. Saint Cyprian, who was from Antioch, began as an initiate of magic and worshipper of the demons. A certain foolish young man who had been smitten with Justina's beauty hired Cyprian to draw her to love him; when Cyprian had wed every demonic device he knew, and had failed, being repulsed by the power of Christ Whom Justina invoked, he understood the weakness of the demons and came to know the truth. Delivered from demonic delusion, he came to Christ and burned all his books of magic, was baptized, and later ascended the episcopal throne in his country. Later, he and Justina were arrested by the Count of Damascus, and having endured many torments at his hands, they were sent finally to Diocletian in Nicomedia, where they were beheaded about the year 304. St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 4:6-15 Brethren, it is the God who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. For while we live we are always being given up to death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you. Since we have the same spirit of faith as he had who wrote, "I believed, and so I spoke," we too believed, and so we speak, knowing that He who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into His presence. For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God. The People of Old and the People of Today St. Paisios the Athonite (+ 1994) was asked: Elder, were people better in the olden days? Pelagia the Righteous - October 8 This Saint was a prominent actress of the city of Antioch, and a pagan, who lived a life of unrestrained prodigality and led many to perdition. Instructed and baptized by a certain bishop named Nonnus (Saint Nonnus is commemorated Nov. 10), she departed for the Mount of Olives near Jerusalem, where she lived as a recluse, feigning to be a eunuch called Pelagia. She lived in such holiness and repentance that within three or four years she was deemed worthy to repose in an odor of sanctity, in the middle of the fifth century. Her tomb on the Mount of Olives has been a place of pilgrimage ever since.
ΓΡΑΜΜΑ ΠΡΟΣ ΕΝΑΝ ΑΡΡΩΣΤΟ Αγαπητέ εν Χριστώ αδελφέ, εσύ υποφέρεις και εγώ όσο γράφω σκέφτομαι το πόνο σου. Έχω άραγε το δικαίωμα να σου γράψω; Έχει το δικαίωμα κάποιος από τα μετόπισθεν να γράφει σ αυτόν που βρίσκεται στην πρώτη γραμμή; Σκεφτόμουν εδώ και πολύ καιρό να σου γράψω αλλά δεν τα κατάφερνα. Ούτε τώρα αισθάνομαι ικανός να παρηγορήσω τη ψυχή σου. Αισθάνομαι βάρος τ ότι οι άλλοι υποφέρουν κι εγώ δεν μπορώ να κάνω κάτι γι αυτούς. Καταλαβαίνω ότι όταν λάβεις το γράμμα αυτό θ αναρωτηθείς: «Γιατί μου γράφει αυτός ο άνθρωπος, αφού δε βρίσκεται στη θέση μου, αφού δε μπορεί να με καταλάβει;». Σου γράφω ακριβώς επειδή και εμένα με γονάτισαν οι πόνοι της αρρώστιας κάποτε και επειδή καταλαβαίνω ότι οι πιθανότητες να σε βοηθήσω είναι ελάχιστες. Γι αυτό σου γράφω. Προσευχήθηκα και προσεύχομαι στο Θεό για να με φωτίσει να σου γράψω κάτι χρήσιμο. Αφού σκέφτηκα πολύ αποφάσισα να επικαλεστώ μια ωραία ιστορία που άκουσα και μ έβαλε σε σκέψεις. Δε θα σου απαλύνει τον πόνο αλλά ίσως σε βοηθήσει να τον αντιμετωπίσεις αλλιώς: «Κάποτε ένας άρρωστος έχασε την υπομονή του και φώναζε στο Θεό ζητώντας να τον απαλλάξει από τους φοβερούς πόνους. Τότε εμφανίστηκε ένας άγγελος και του είπε: - Ο Πανάγαθος Θεός εισάκουσε την προσευχή σου και θα ικανοποιήσει το αίτημά σου, με την προϋπόθεση όμως αντί για έναν χρόνο να υποφέρεις με πόνους που θα σε καθαρίσουν σαν η φωτιά το χρυσάφι, θα περάσεις τρεις ώρες στην κόλαση. Η ψυχή σου έχει ανάγκη καθαρισμού δια της δοκιμασίας της ασθενείας, για ακόμη έναν χρόνο. Αλλά αυτό σου φαίνεται δύσκολο. Δοκίμασε τότε να υπομείνεις τρεις ώρες στη κόλαση και μετά θα σωθείς με τις προσευχές της Εκκλησίας. Σκέψου μόνο τι σημαίνει κόλαση. Ο άρρωστός σκέφτηκε: Ένας χρόνος να βασανίζομαι στη γη είναι πολύ καλύτερα να υπομείνω τρεις ώρες στη κόλαση. - Συμφωνώ να πάω για τρεις ώρες στη κόλαση. Τότε ο άγγελος πήρε την ψυχή του αρρώστου στα χέρια του, την άφησε εκεί και έφυγε λέγοντας. - Θα γυρίσω σε τρεις ώρες. Το αιώνιο σκοτάδι, η στενότητα, οι φωνές αυτών που βασανίζονταν και έφταναν στ αυτιά του, του προξενούσαν φόβο και έναν ανυπόφορο πόνο. Πουθενά καμία φωνή χαράς στην ατελείωτη άβυσσο της κολάσεως. Φαίνονταν στο σκοτάδι μόνο τα πύρινα μάτια των δαιμόνων, έτοιμα να τους σχίσουν. Ο καημένος άρχισε να τρέμει και να φωνάζει, αλλά δεν του απαντούσε κανείς παρά μόνο η άβυσσος. Του φαινόνταν ότι είχαν περάσει αιώνες και περίμενε με ανυπομονησία τον άγγελο αλλά και αυτός αργούσε. Τελικά, απελπισμένος που δε θα δει ποτέ τον παράδεισο άρχισε να στενάζει και να κλαίει αλλά κανέναν δεν ένοιαζε. Στην κόλαση οι αμαρτωλοί σκέφτονται μόνο τον εαυτό τους και οι δαίμονες χαίρονται με τα βάσανά τους. Μα επιτέλους η γλυκιά λάμψη του αγγέλου φάνηκε και μ ένα παραδείσιο χαμόγελο τον ρώτησε: - Πως είσαι άνθρωπε; - Ποτέ δεν πίστεψα ότι και οι άγγελοι λένε ψέματα, ψιθύριζε με σβησμένη φωνή. - Τι θέλεις να πεις; Ρώτησε ο άγγελος. - Μου υποσχέθηκες ότι θα με πάρεις από δω σε τρεις ώρες και πέρασαν χρόνια, αιώνες ολόκληροι. - Ευλογημένε, τι χρόνια και αιώνες; είπε με έκπληξη ο άγγελος. Πέρασε μόνο μια ώρα και θα πρέπει να μείνεις άλλες δύο. - Πως; Δύο ώρες; Δε μπορώ, δεν έχω τη δύναμη. Εάν είναι δυνατόν και αν επιτρέπει ο Θεός, πάρε με από εδώ. Καλύτερα να υποφέρω στη γη για πολλά χρόνια, μέχρι την ημέρα της Κρίσεως, αλλά βγάλε με από την κόλαση. Λυπήσου με! - Καλά, του απάντησε ο άγγελος. Ο Θεός ως Πατέρας φιλάνθρωπος που είναι θα σ ελεήσει. Μόλις άκουσε αυτά τα λόγια άνοιξε τα μάτια του και είδε ότι βρίσκεται πάλι στο κρεβάτι του πόνου ( Γερ Παισίου, Ο Χατζη Γεωργης ο Αθωνίτης) Ίσως το έχεις ξανακούσει. Ίσως το α- κούς για πρώτη φορά. Μου φάνηκε κατάλληλο για την περίπτωσή σου. Δε ξέρω τι θα έκανα στην περίπτωση αυτού του αρρώστου, αλλά μάλλον θα έκανα την ίδια επιλογή. Τρεις ώρες κόλαση Αλλά τα πράγματα δεν είναι έτσι όπως τα βλέπουμε. Ξέρω ότι τώρα που σ έχουν ξεπεράσει τα βάσανα αναρωτιέσαι γιατί άραγε ο Θεός δε σου έδωσε έναν άλλο σταυρό. Γιατί δεν διάλεξε έναν άλλο δρόμο για να σωθείς; Η απάντηση σ αυτή την ερώτηση δεν είναι δύσκολη. Ο Θεός ξέρει ποιος είναι ο πιο κατάλληλος δρόμος για τη σωτηρία σου. This means that only baptized, chrismated and observant Orthodox faithful receive communion in our churches. At the same time, we warmly welcome all non-orthodox to join us in prayer and celebration, and humbly offer to all present the Antidoro bread of fellowship at the end of the service. We offer this important symbol instead of the Gifts, in the words of the Apostle Paul, Till we all come to the unity of the Faith (Eph. 4.13).
