GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH 435 KEATING DRIVE WINSTON-SALEM, NC 27104 ADDRESS SERVICE REQUESTED TIME SENSITIVE MATERIAL PLEASE EXPEDITE OCTOBER 2016 Non-Profit Organiz. U.S. Postage Winston-Salem, NC Permit # 168 I AM INVITING YOU TO JOIN IN THE VISION FOR THIS RESURRECTED CHURCH AT GROUND ZERO. Archbishop Demetrios 9/11 is seared into our collective memory. Among the terrible events that happened on that dreadful day was also the destruction of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church. It was a church that for countless immigrants coming through Ellis Island, was their first spiritual home away from home. Πατήρ Δημήτριος Καγγελάρης Δοιηκητικό Συμβούλιο The New St. Nicholas, is being Resurrected. It will be a Beacon of Light, a place of prayer, solace and remembering. It will function as a parish church, however it will also function as one that would reflect Orthodox Christianity and our Traditions in innumerable ways to countless visitors from the whole world. All Greek Orthodox Churches have been asked to take part in this great effort. The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church of Winston-Salem, will also be assisting in this historic endeavor, both from it s treasury, and with your heartfelt generosity. Please consider making a generous gift towards this effort. Your donations should be made out to the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church; Memo St. Nicholas. Thank you for your response and for your generosity. In Christ, Fr. Demetri Kangelaris Annunciation Parish Council

Why doesn t the screen show a straight line instead of those peaks and valleys? she asked him. The doctor replied, If that line was straight, it would mean that you were dead. Those ups and downs show me that you re healthy and alive. In a similar manner, the Great Physician allows us to have ups and downs in our spiritual lives, so that we might be strengthened in our faith and develop healthy attitudes. Without the lowly valleys we travel through, we would never reach the highest peaks.

Thanks to Mr. Jim Gay we have a beautiful vegetable garden. We planted lettuce, cabbage, broccoli, onions, spinach and corn that will be knee high by the 4th of July!! And we will be involved every step of the way, from caring and watering the vegetables, to harvesting, preparing and sharing the food! So many teachable moments!! Happy Fall! Evdoksia Vagios The Good Samaritan Helpers of the Greek Orthodox Church sent cards to Joe, Sia, Julia, Louisa, Vasso, and Georgia. Choose Forgiveness It s the Only Way to Forge a Long Term Relationship: Choosing to Thrive in My Circumstance By Fr. Stavros Akrotirianakis in The Prayer Team Then Peter came to Jesus and asked Lord how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times? Jesus answered, I tell you, not seven times, but seventy times seven. Matthew 18:21-22 We ve all heard the phrase to err is human, to forgive is divine. It is part of our human condition, the condition that we live in after the Fall, that we all make errors. Even though sin is a choice, no one forces us to sin, we live in a sinful world and even the strongest person will eventually succumb to some sin. Some people sin less than others. We should always strive to not sin, but a consequence of living in a sinful world is that eventually we will all sin. And people will sin against us. Even the most devout Christian is the victim of the sins of others. One of the choices we are faced with each day is the choice to forgive or not. I couldn t venture to guess how many sins I have each day. If I have even sinful thoughts, those are sins. Even if these sinful thoughts are not known or directed at others, they are still sins against God. When I say or do unkind things to others, I am sinning against them. And when others direct unkind thoughts or actions to me, they are sinning against me. We all live in this sinful state of broken relationships with God and with one another. The only way to mend a broken relationship is with forgiveness. We ask God for forgiveness and He offers it freely. We are supposed to ask others for forgiveness as well when we ve done wrong. And we are supposed to forgive as God forgives, freely. When we hold grudges against other people, it makes broken relationships even more broken. It sometimes irreparably breaks relationships. Any relationship we have that we wish to be a long term relationship with a spouse, with a child, with a friend, in a job situation can only survive if there is forgiveness. I have been married for many years. If I commit even one sin against my wife each week, add 52 weeks times over twenty years we have been married and there would be one thousand sins on our record. And believe me, I m sure I sin more often than once a week. I ve served in Tampa for nearly 12 years. If I do one thing wrong a year to each of 1,000 parishioners, that s 12,000 transgressions and it s probably a lot more than that. If we keep score and don t forgive, then no relationship can succeed or survive for really any amount of time. The choice to forgive belongs to each person. It cannot be forced or coerced. When two people are at odds, one can choose to forgive the other, and at times, the other will not exchange the forgiveness. This, too, cannot be forced. For the person who forgives another, or who asks for forgiveness from another, these actions are liberating. For the person who cannot forgive, the inability to forgive can be paralyzing. If John and Fred have wronged each other, if John forgives Fred and asks Fred for forgiveness, John is freed even if Fred still wrongs him and even if Fred doesn t forgive him. On the other hand, Fred is paralyzed spiritually because cannot forgive or doesn t want to forgive. I can t have any relationship in my life if I cannot forgive or be forgiven. So, forgiveness is a choice that I strive to continually improve on, because with forgiveness there is freedom and with freedom, redemption. For as we read in Psalm 130:7: For with the Lord there is steadfast love, and with Him is plenteous redemption. And He will redeem Israel from all His iniquities. Our redemption is tied to our ability and willingness to forgive. Christ forgave us from the Cross. It is incumbent on us to forgive one another. But forgiveness is a choice. Lord, I know that I am not perfect. I sin every day in some way against You and against others. Please forgive me when I sin against You or against my neighbor. Give me the courage to seek genuine reconciliation with my neighbor. Help me to forgive those who wrong me. Help me to move on from disappointments in relationships. Through Your grace, help me to restore and heal relationships (bring to pray some that come to mind). Amen. Seek forgiveness today! Offer forgiveness today! +Fr. Please watch for info in upcoming emails bulletins and PhoneTree messages. GOYA BIBLE STUDY AND BIBLE BOWL Our first GOYA Bible Study went very well. The Bible Study is for any GOYAN who wants to learn more about the Holy Scriptures. It is NOT just for Bible Bowl participants! We encourage all of our GOYA to take become active in learning about their faith. Come join in the discussion. Bible Study meets on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month from 7:00p- 8:15p. GOING FOR THE G.O.L.D Dear GOYAN s and Parents, This year in GOYA we will be going for the G.O.L.D (GOYA, Outreach, Leadership, and Development). We want to instill in our GOYANs, their families and our community a greater sense of mission. We want to examine our ministry programs and see how they fit into the four elements of GOYA which are; Worship, Witness, Service and Fellowship. We will focus on how GOYA can start going for the G.O.L.D. We will begin the process by formulating a leadership team representing all of the grade levels from 7 th to 12 th grades. The goal of this team will be to plan and implement not only activities but ways that GOYA can better minister to its members, the Annunciation Community and the community in general. Individuals who desire to be part of the G.O.L.D. committee must be willing to commit their time and their talents. It will be a fun and exciting experience but it will also be work. I encourage all GOYANs to begin thinking about wanting to participate in this important endeavor to work for GOYA, their Church, the community, and in the service of Christ. In Christ, Fr. Costa WINTER YOUTH RALLY UPDATE Most everyone is aware that this year there have been major changes to the format of the Metropolis Winter Youth Rally. It has been limited to only 9th 12th grade participation with the exception of 8th graders that participated last year may also participate this year. The Jr. Division of boys basketball has been eliminated and team sizes have been restricted to only 9 players per team for boys basketball. The registration for Winter Youth Rally will be open this month. IT IS IM- PORTANT that you watch your email, bulletins and phone-tree messages for details as this year all registration will be done electronically and it will be important to follow the directions as the registration format has changed also. Please be patient as change, even if for the better, can be difficult. The changes are being made by our Metropolis in order to try to enhance the WYR experience because of the growing number of participants in recent years. GOYANS and parents, Please make sure that you fill out the GOYA registration forms as soon as possible. These forms allow us to update contact information which helps us keep you all informed about what is going on concerning programs and upcoming events. Be on the lookout for more information that will be coming soon for those wanting to participate in our athletics programs ( girls volleyball and boys basketball). Remember that the greatest of any program that our youth can participate in is the DIVINE LITURGY every Sunday. We look forward to this coming year and please remember to be on time ( or maybe even a little early). The Divine Liturgy begins at 10:00am
