H Y M N O L O G Y I N S T R U C T I O N New for 2013-2014 Sunday School Year The Education, Cultural, and Youth Ministries Committee is excited to announce that beginning September 8, 2013, Hymnology Instruction will be added to the Sunday School curriculum. Each month students of all ages will learn a liturgical hymn. "Se Imnoumen We Praise You, which is chanted during Divine Liturgy as the congregation kneels, will be taught first. The procedure for this endeavor will be as follows: Immediately after Holy Communion, the Sunday School staff will direct all Sunday School students to the Coffee Room. Once seated the students will chant the selected hymn in Greek and English and will receive a brief explanation of its meaning. The session will take approximately 5 to 10 minutes. Afterward, the teachers will escort the students to the upstairs classrooms for their lessons. We appreciate your supporting this important opportunity for our youth to learn our beautiful Orthodox music. If you have any questions, please contact Viki Moustoukas vmoustouka@aol.com. Beginning of the Indiction The first day of the Ecclesiastical New Year is also called the beginning of the Indiction. The term Indiction comes from a Latin word meaning to impose. It was originally applied to the imposition of taxes in Egypt. The first worldwide Indiction was in 312 when the Emperor Constantine (May 21) saw a miraculous vision of the Cross in the sky. Before the introduction of the Julian calendar, Rome began the New Year on September 1. According to Holy Tradition, Christ entered the synagogue on September 1 to announce His mission to mankind (Luke 4:16-22). Quoting Isaiah (61:1-2), the Savior proclaimed, The spirit of the Lord is upon me; because He has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent me to proclaim release to captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord... For more information on the religious and the historical significance of the Indiction, please see the article in the September issue of The Flame.

Resurrection Apolytikion Tone 1 The stone had been sealed by the Jews, and soldiers were guarding your pure Body; but on the third day, Savior, you arose and gave life to the world. Wherefore the heavenly Powers cried out to you, Giver of life: Glory to your resurrection, Christ, glory to your kingdom, glory to your divine plan, you who alone love human kind. Apolytikion of the Indiction Tone 2 Creator of the universe, setting times and seasons by Your sole authority, bless the cycle of the year of Your grace, O Lord, guarding our rulers and Your nation in peace, at the intercession of the Theotokos, and save us. Apolytikion of the Theotokos Graave Tone Rejoice, you who art full of grace, O Virgin Theotokos, haven and protection of the race of man; for the Redeemer of the world became incarnate of you; for you alone art both mother and virgin, ever blessed and glorified. Intercede with Christ God that peace be granted unto all the world. Apolytikion of the Venerable Symeon Tone 1 You became a pillar of patience, emulating the ancient fathers: Job in his sufferings, Joseph in temptations, and the life of heavenly bodiless ones, even though you were yet in the body. Simeon, our venerable father, intercede with Christ God, that our souls may be saved. Apolytikion of the Holy Trinity Plagal Tone 4 Blessed are You, O Christ our God, who made fishermen all-wise, sending upon them the Holy Spirit and, through them, netting the world. O Loving One, glory to You. Kontakion of the Indiction Tone 4 O Creator of the ages and Master, God of all, truly transcendent in essence, bless the cycle of this year, saving by Your mercy, O boundlessly compassionate One, all those who worship You the only Master, and who cry unto You O Redeemer: grant to all a fertile year.

Verse: Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good. TIMOTHY, my son, first of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all men, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life, godly and respectful in every way. This is good, and it is acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all, the testimony to which was borne at the proper time. For this I was appointed a preacher and apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. THE GOSPEL Luke 4:16-22 At that time, Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up; and he went to the synagogue, as his custom was, on the sabbath day. And he stood up to read; and there was given to him the book of the prophet Isaiah. He opened the book and found the place where it was written, "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord." And he closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant, and sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. And he began to say to them, "Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing." And all spoke well of him, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And, they said, Is not this Joseph s son?
