Chapter 63 Pronouns 63.1 Pronouns stand in place of nouns. We have already met the most frequently-occurring Pronouns in previous chapters. Please review them before proceeding. The Personal Pronouns ἐγώ σύ αὐτός ἡµεῖς ὑµεῖς - Chapter 11 The Intensive Pronoun αὐτός - Chapter 11 The Reflexive Pronouns ἐµαυτόν σεαυτόν ἑαυτόν - Chapter 16 The Possessive Pronouns and Adjectives ἐµός σός ἡµέτερος ὑµέτερος - Chapter 11 The Reciprocal Pronoun ἀλλήλων - Chapter 16 The Relative Pronoun ὃς ἣ ὃ - Chapter 15 The Demonstrative Pronouns and Adjectives οὗτος and ἐκεῖνος - Chapter 13 The Indefinite Pronoun and Adjective τις τι - Chapter 43 The Interrogative Pronoun τίς ; τί ; - Chapter 43 The Indefinite Relative Pronoun ὅστις ἥτις ὅ τι - Chapter 43 Some adjectives can also take a pronominal use - see Section 62.3 63.2 At this point it will be useful to review some of the Pronouns we already know 1. Πάντα µοι παρεδόθη All things were entrusted to me ὑπὸ τοῦ πατρός µου. by my Father. (Matt. 11:27) 2. καὶ οὐδεὶς ἐπιγινώσκει τὸν υἱὸν And no-one knows the Son εἰ µὴ ὁ πατήρ. except the Father, (Matt. 11:27) 3. οὐδὲ τὸν πατέρα τις ἐπιγινώσκει Nor does anyone know the Father except εἰ µὴ ὁ υἱὸς καὶ ᾧ ἐὰν the Son and (anyone) to whom he (the βούληται ἀποκαλύψαι. Son) wishes to reveal (him). (Matt. 11:27) 4. κἀµοὶ ὁ θεὸς ἔδειξεν µηδένα κοινὸν God showed (told) to me also not to call ἢ ἀκάθαρτον λέγειν ἄνθρωπον. any man common or unclean. (Acts 10:28) 5. ιὰ τοῦτο λέγω ὑµῖν, Mὴ µεριµνᾶτε Because of this, I say to you, "Do not worry τῇ ψυχῇ ὑµῶν τί φάγητε. about your life, what you might eat." (Matt. 6:25) 6. ὅστις γὰρ ἄν ποιήσῃ τὸ θέληµα τοῦ Whoever does the will of my Father πατρός µου τοῦ ἐν οὐρανοῖς αὐτός µου in the heavens, (he) is my brother and ἀδελφὸς καί ἀδελφὴ καὶ µήτηρ ἐστίν. my sister and my mother. (Matt. 12:50) 7. καὶ λέγω τούτῳ, Πορεύθητι, καὶ πορεύεται, And I say to (this) one, "Go!", and he goes, καὶ ἄλλῳ, Ἔρχου, καὶ ἔρχεται, and to another, "Come", and he comes, καὶ τῷ δούλῳ µου, Ποίησον τοῦτο, and to my slave, "Do this!" καὶ ποιεῖ. and he does (it). (Matt. 8:9) 8. καὶ ἀµφότεροι προβεβηκότες And both (of them) were advanced ἐν ταῖς ἡµέραις αὐτῶν ἦσαν. in their days (advanced in age). ( προβεβηκότες = Perfect Participle of προβαίνω - I go ahead, advance) (Luke 1:7) 9. καὶ τότε σκανδαλισθήσονται πολλοὶ καὶ And then many will be offended and ἀλλήλους παραδώσουσιν καὶ will betray one another and will µισήσουσιν ἀλλήλους. hate one another. (Matt. 24:10) 10. ἀγαπήσεις τὸν πλησίον σου ὡς σεαυτόν. You shall love your neighbor as yourself. (Matt. 19:19)

63.3 Other Demonstrative Pronouns and Adjectives ὅδε ἥδε τόδε this, he, she, it - built from the Definite Article ὅ ἥ τό with δὲ tacked on τηλικοῦτος τηλικαύτη τηλικοῦτο so great, so large, so old, so young τοιοῦτος τοιαύτη τοιοῦτον such, like, of such kind τοσοῦτος τοσαύτη τοσοῦτον so much, so great, so large 1. Tάδε λέγει ὁ κρατῶν The one holding the seven stars τοὺς ἑπτὰ ἀστέρας. says these things. (Rev. 2:1) 2. γυνὴ δέ τις ὀνόµατι Mάρθα ὑπέδεξατο A (certain) woman (Some woman) named αὐτόν. καί τῇδε ἦν ἀδελφὴ Martha received him. And she had (to her καλουµένη Mαριάµ. was) a sister called Mary. (Luke 10:38-39) 3. ( ὁ θεὸς)... ὃς ἐκ τηλικοὺτου θανάτου God... who rescued us from so great a death, ἐρρύσατο ἡµᾶς καὶ ῥυσεται. and who will rescue (us). (see 2 Cor. 1:10) 4. πῶς ἡµεῖς ἐκφευξόµεθα τηλικαύτης How shall we escape if we ignore (having ἀµελήσαντες σωτερίας ; ignored) so great a salvation? (Heb. 2:3) ( ἐκφευξόµεθα = Future of ἐκφεύγω - I escape, from ἐκ + φεύγω - I flee ἀµελήσαντες = Aorist Participle of ἀµελέω - I ignore, take no notice of. The participle here is used in a conditional sense ) 5. ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν, Ἄφετε τὰ παιδία καὶ But Jesus said, "Leave the children alone and µὴ κωλύετε αὐτὰ ἐλθεῖν πρός µε, do not hinder them (from) coming to me, τῶν γὰρ τοιούτων ἐστὶν ἡ βασιλεία for of such is the kingdom τῶν οὐρανῶν. of the heavens. (Matt. 19:14) 6. Καὶ τοιαύταις παραβολαῖς πολλαῖς And with many such parables ἐλάλει αὐτοῖς τὸν λόγον. he was speaking the word to them. (Mark 4:33) 7. κατὰ πίστιν ἀπέθανον οὗτοι πάντες, These all died in faith... µὴ λαβόντες τὰς ἐπαγγελίας ἀλλὰ... not having received the promises, but... ὁµολογήσαντες ὅτι ξένοι... εἰσιν having confessed that they were strangers ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς. οἱ γὰρ τοιαῦτα λέγοντες on the earth. Those saying such things ἐµφανίζουσιν ὅτι πατρίδα ἐπιζητοῦσιν. reveal that they are seeking a fatherland. ( ἡ πατρίς, -ίδος = fatherland, homeland ) (Heb. 11:13-14) 8. ἀνέβη οὖν Σίµων Πέτρος Then Simon Peter went (up - onto the sea) καὶ εἵλκυσεν τὸν δίκτυον εἰς τὴν γῆν and drew the net to land, µεστὸν ἰχθύων µεγάλων... filled with large fishes... καὶ τοσούτων ὄντων and (although) they were so great, οὐκ ἐσχίσθη τὸ δίκτυον. the net was not ripped. (John 21:11) ( εἵλκυσεν Aorist of ἕλκω - I drag, draw ) 9. ἔστιν παιδάριον ὧδε ὃς ἔχει πέντε ἄρτους There's a lad here who has five loaves...... ἀλλὰ ταῦτα τί ἐστιν εἰς τοσούτους ; but what are these for so many (people)? (John 6:9) 10. ἀπεκρίθη δὲ πρὸς αὔτην Πέτρος, Eἶπέ µοι, Peter answered her, "Tell me εἰ τοσούτου τὸ χωριον ἀπέδοσθε ; if (whether) you sold the field for so much? ἡ δὲ εἶπεν, Nαί, τοσούτου. And she said, "Yes, for so much." (Acts 5:8)

63.4 Other Indefinite Pronouns, Interrogative Pronouns, and Pronominal Adjectives A. Paired Indefinite and Interrogative Pronouns As in the case of τις - someone (the Indefinite Pronoun) and τίς ; - who? (the Interrogative Pronoun) there are several other pairs of Indefinite and Interrogative Pronouns which differ only in accent. πηλίκος ; how old? how large? πηλίκος how large, how great, of some age ( the accent is the same as the Interrogative) ποῖος ; of what sort? what kind of who? ποιός of some sort πόσος ; how much? how many? ποσός how much, how many πόσῳ µᾶλλον how much more B. Indefinite Pronominal Adjectives (we have met all these previously) ἄλλος - another ἕτερος - other ἕκαστος - each µόνος - only πᾶς - each, every οὐδείς and µηδείς - no-one οὐδέν and µηδέν - nothing C. ὁ ἡ τὸ δεῖνα such a one, so-and-so Always used with the Definite Article. Masculine, feminine and neuter have the same forms. Declension, given for reference. You do not need to learn the declension. ὁ δεῖνα οί δεῖνες τὸν δεῖνα τοὺς δεῖνας τοῦ δεῖνος τῶν δείνων τῷ δεῖνι τοῖς δεῖσιν 1. Ἴδετε πηλίκοις ὑµῖν γράµµασιν ἔγραψα See with what large leters I worte to you τῇ ἐµῇ χειρί. with my (own) hand. (Gal. 6:11) 2. (ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν)... εἰ δὲ θέλεις Jesus said, "If you wish εἰς τὴν ζωὴν εἰσελθεῖν, to enter into eternal life, keep the τήρησον τὰς ἐντολάς. commandments." He said (says) to him, λέγει αὐτῷ, Ποίας ; "Which ones?" (see Matt. 19:17-18) 3. τοῦτο δὲ ἔλεγεν σηµαίνων ποίῳ θανάτῳ He said this, signifying by what sort of death ἤµελλεν ἀποθνῄσκειν. he was about to die. (John 12:33) 4. ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν,... οὔπω νοεῖτε, Jesus said, "... do you not yet understand οὐδὲ µνηµονεύετε τοὺς πέντε ἄρτους nor remember the five loaves τῶν πεντακισχιλίων καὶ of the five thousand (men) and how many πόσους κοφίνους ελάβετε ; baskets you gathered? (Matt. 16:8-9) 5. τότε λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ Πιλᾶτος, Oὐκ ἀκούεις Then Pilate said to him, "Do you not hear πόσα σου καταµαρτυροῦσιν ; how many (things) they testify against you? ( καταµαρτυρέω - I bring evidence against one, testify against ) (Matt. 27:13) 6. εἰ οὖν ὑµεῖς πονηροὶ ὄντες δόµατα ἀγαθὰ If then you, being evil, know to give good διδόναι τοῖς τέκνοις ὑµῶν, πόσῳ µᾶλλον gifts to your children, how much more ὁ πατὴρ ὑµῶν... δώσει ἀγαθὰ will your Father give good (things) τοῖς αἰτοῦσιν αὐτόν. to those asking him! (Matt. 7:11) ( τὸ δόµα δόµατος - gift ) 7. ὁ δὲ εἶπεν, Ὑπάγετε εἰς τὴν πόλιν πρὸς He said, "Go into the city, to so-and-so τὸν δεῖνα καὶ εἶπατε αὐτῷ, Ὁ διδάσκαλος and say to him, 'The teacher says, λέγει, Ὁ καιρός µου ἐγγύς ἐστιν. My time is at hand. (Matt. 26:18) 8. ὁ δὲ λέγει αὐτοῖς, He says to them, "How many loaves Πόσους ἄρτους ἔχετε ; do you have? (Mark 6:38)

9. Γρηγορεῖτε οὖν, ὅτι οὐκ οἴδατε Watch, then, for you do not know on which ποίᾳ ἡµέρᾳ ὁ κύριος ὑµῶν ἔρχεται. day your Lord comes. (Matt. 24:42) 10. πόσῳ µᾶλλον ὑµείς διαφέρετε τῶν πετεινῶν. How much more worth are you than the birds ( τὸ πετεινόν - bird ) (Luke 12:24) 63.5 Other Relative and Indefinite Relative Pronouns ἡλίκος -η -ον how great, how large. how small, how old οἷος οἷα οἷον such as, of what kind ὁποῖος -α -ον of what sort ὅσος ὅση ὅσον as much as, how much, as good as, how great, as far as, how far, as much as. Plural : as many as, all, every ὅσος ἄν, ὅσος ἐάν = whoever 1. θέλω γὰρ ὑµᾶς εἰδέναι ἡλίκον ἀγῶνα I wish you to know how great a struggle I ἔχω ὑπὲρ ὑµῶν... καὶ (ποσῶν) ὅσοι have on your behalf... and for as many such οὐχ ἑόρακαν τὸ προσωπόν µου ἐν σαρκι. as have not seen me face to face in person.
