welcome harry danalis PRESIDENT, GREEK ORTHODOX COMMUNITY OF NSW nia karteris CHAIR, GREEK FESTIVAL OF SYDNEY At a time in Australia s history when there is a concerted effort by some to discredit multiculturalism and to stir the flames of racism the presentation of the Greek Festival of Sydney is a timely reminder of the success of multiculturalism and the rich cultural diversity with which it has enriched Australian society. The Greek Festival of Sydney is an example of this rich diversity and also a celebration of our community s struggle against assimilation and racism. The events in this year s program provide a perfect example of how our identity as migrants has grown and redefined itself by our Australian experience so that it has become uniquely a product of both. More importantly, in the main, the Australian community has embraced this cultural diversity and multiculturalism as is evident from the thousands of Australians who each year support our Festival and its various events. On behalf of the Greek Orthodox Community of NSW I extend my appreciation to the festival committee, to the staff of the Greek Orthodox Community, and to the many volunteers who work tirelessly to make the festival a success and to our many sponsors for their invaluable support. Last year we had a record number of people, (over 200 000) head down to the Greek Fest Darling Harbour. Georgios Karaiskakis, the nun s son, was one of its basic protagonists. A genius of strategy, he possessed a strong class political instinct, was unyielding, honest and ingenious. He died as he was born, stripped of all possessions. Had Karaiskakis not been assassinated by a fellow Greek while still young, had his strategic assessments been trusted, the battle of Faliro, which determined the outcome of the national struggle, would have a different result and the development of the revolution would have had taken different directions, in favour of the people, against the will of the foreign protector powers and their local lackeys. sex, drugs and music IN MODERN GREECE - Presented By Vrasidas Karalis This presentation is focused around Rebetika singers and the counterculture in contemporary Greece - from the rock groups of the sixties and seventies to the punk and alternative groups of today. The Greek music scene is full of pleasant surprises and contradictions, together with serious attempts to modernise a very old tradition. In it we see the co-existence of very traditional music expression together with jazz, rock, and ethnic music, which has been mixed with sounds and the music of the new migrant communities now living in the country. During the talk some crucial Rebetika figures will be presented as well as great rock groups like Socrates and the Idols, together with some radical voices expressing the anxieties and the aspirations of Greek society. The presentation will include music from all these periods and video clips from some of the most important Greek music of today. So what must a women s role as a responsible fighter for peace be? women in the australian greek diaspora TALK BY DR PANAYOTA NAZOU Beyond the role of mother and wife, Greek women have been the foundation of the community in Australia. Dr Panayota Nazou will be giving a public talk on Greek Australian Women in the Diaspora. Through the use of humour and fact, this talk celebrates their achievements and their hard work in the face of adversity. The Parthenon and its art will be put into their historical context and followed through the ages to the present day. The new Acropolis Museum under construction in Athens will be introduced along with the hopes the museum will carry for the preservation in our memory of that stunning cultural phenomenon, the Age of Classical Athens, which the Parthenon in so many ways represents. Tue 4 April, 7pm - 9pm The Barnet Room, Customs House, The Rocks FOTIS AGGOULES 1911 1964 behind the barricades and the barbed wires LECTURE BY VASILIS KOLOVOS Presented by famed Greek Artistic Director, President of the Pan-Hellenic Federation of Visual and Audio Entertainment, writer, actor, and scholar, Vasilis Kolovos discusses Fotis Aggoules, the people s poet. A freedom fighter from Chios, Aggoules is one of the most representative cases of a creator who lived and wrote during the harsh period between the two world wars, who grew up and matured poetically and ideologically amidst poverty, exploitation, the barbarism of fascist occupation, behind the barbed wire and bars of jails. He is the proletarian poet fisherman of Chios who sang of the struggling people, who marched to death within the horror of the civil war and post civil war period. He is the poet who behind the barbed wire and the barricades yelled at the oppressors: Don t expect us to give in, not even for a minute. Not even as much as the cypress bands in the storm, We have loved life very much, far too much. The songs have been realised from surviving musical fragments and are performed on copies of ancient instruments made by Charalambos Vatiliotis. Melismos will also include some recent folk music (demotika) in celebration of Australia s Greek heritage. kazantzakis and islam Nikos Kazantzakis, author of Zorba the Greek and The Last Temptation of Christ, had a personal knowledge of Islam. His attitude is one of active interest and sensitive engagement with Islam and other religious traditions. His openness to different ideas in his search for meaning in life can be an example to us all. The program includes a brief introduction to Islam by Professor Ahmad Shboul, a presentation of some of Kazantzakis writings on the topic by Dr Alfred Vincent, and readings by Litsa Diakovasili, Anastasia Anastasiadis, and special guest Mary Kostakidis. Anonymous builders created an environment through which people connected with the holy, whilst artists brought the divine into everyday life and made people feel the saints as protectors and helpers. This superb heritage makes Mani a living museum of Byzantine culture in today s Greece. The event includes coffee and sweets. shifting ground A survey of emerging contemporary artists of Greek descent. Featuring five contemporary artists, Shifting Ground surveys a new generation of artists working within the realms of conceptual, installation and performance art. Selected for their disparate conceptual and aesthetic tendencies, the artists investigate the shifting ground of Greek Australian identity and art over recent periods and reflect the extent to which current events influence these shifts.
