St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 4:6-15 Brethren, it is the God who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. For while we live we are always being given up to death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you.since we have the same spirit of faith as he had who wrote, "I believed, and so I spoke," we too believed, and so we speak, knowing that He who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into His presence. The Gospel of Luke 7:11-16 At that time, Jesus went to a city called Nain, and his disciples and a great crowd went with him. As he drew near to the gate of the city, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow; and a large crowd from the city was with her. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, "Do not weep." And he came and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, "Young man, I say to you, arise." And the dead man sat up, and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother. Fear seized them all; and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has arisen among us!" and "God has visited his people!"

Ο άγιος των δικαστικών και των δικηγόρων Ο άγιος Διονύσιος ήταν πασίγνωστος φιλόσοφος της Αθήνας και μέλος του ανωτάτου δικαστηρίου της πόλης, του Αρείου Πάγου. Ήταν ο πρώτος (ή τουλάχιστον από τους πρώτους) που ασπάστηκε το Χριστιανισμό, έπειτα από το κήρυγμα του αποστόλου Παύλου κάτω από τον ιερό βράχο της Ακροπόλεως: Τινές δε άνδρες κολληθέντες αυτώ επίστευσαν, εν οις και Διόνυσος ο Αρεοπαγίτης (Πράξ. ιζ, 34). Υπήρξε ο πρώτος επίσκοπος της Αθήνας κατά την αποστολική εποχή (κάποιες μεταγενέστερες πηγές αναφέρουν ως πρώτο επίσκοπο Αθηνών τον Ιερόθεο και διάδοχό του το Διονύσιο, βλ. το βίο του αγίου Ιεροθέου). Ο άγιος Διονύσιος ο Αρεοπαγίτης μαρτύρησε δια ξίφους επί Δομιτιανού, ενώ υπάρχουν και κάποιες πηγές που τοποθετούν το μαρτύριό του επί Τραϊανού ή ακόμη και επί Αδριανού.Αυτά είναι τα ελάχιστα ιστορικά στοιχεία που διαθέτουμε σχετικά με τον άγιο Διονύσιο τον Αρεοπαγίτη. Πολλοί συναξαριστές δίνουν ένα πλήθος πληροφοριών για τη σημαντικότατη αυτή προσωπικότητα του Χριστιανισμού, οι οποίες όμως εντάσσονται αποκλειστικά και μόνο στον κύκλο της παράδοσης. Έτσι μία παράδοση τοποθετεί τον άγιο Διονύσιο την ημέρα που σταυρώθηκε ο Χριστός στην Ηλιούπολη της Αιγύπτου με το φιλόσοφο Απολλοφάνη (3 ος αιώνας). Όταν σκοτείνιασε ο ήλιος, ο Διονύσιος αναφώνησε: «Ή η φύσις αλλοιούται ή θεός πάσχει».άλλη παράδοση αναφέρει ότι μετά τον αποκεφαλισμό του, ο ίδιος ο ιερομάρτυρας παρέδωσε την αποτμηθείσα τιμία κάρα του στην ευσεβή χριστιανή Κατούλα. Σύμφωνα με ακόμη μεταγενέστερες παραδόσεις, που όμως δεν είναι ευρύτερα αποδεκτές, ο Διονύσιος υπήρξε ο ιδρυτής της Εκκλησίας των Παρισίων κατά την αποστολική εποχή. Μία ακόμη παράδοση, ιδιαίτερα αγαπητή που έχει εγκολπωθεί από την Εκκλησία και εκφράζεται τόσο στην αγιογραφία όσο και στην υμνογραφία, θέλει τον άγιο Διονύσιο να παρίσταται στην Κοίμηση της Παναγίας, μαζί με τους άλλους δύο ιερομάρτυρες Ιερόθεο και Τιμόθεο, μεταφερόμενος από τις νεφέλες που άρπαξαν τους Αποστόλους. Στις ιερές εικόνες της Κοιμήσεως απεικονίζεται με τους δύο ιεράρχες να στέκεται πίσω από το χορό των Αποστόλων, ενώ στο «θεοτόκιο» κατά την ημέρα της γιορτής του ακούμε: Εν τή σεπτή κοιμήσει σου, Παναγία Παρθένε, παρήν ό Διονύσιος, σύv τώ Ιεροθέω, καί Τιμοθέω τώ θείω, Άμα τοίς, Αποστόλοις, έκαστος ύμνοv άδοντες, πρόσφοροv τή σή μνήμη. μεθ ών καί νύν, πάσα γλώσσα βρότειος αvυμvεί σε, τήv τού Θεού λοχεύτριαν, καί τού κόσμου προστάτιν. Στον άγιο Διονύσιο Αρεοπαγίτη αποδόθηκαν διάφορα συγγράμματα, τα οποία η σύγχρονη έρευνα δε θεωρεί γνήσια, είναι δηλαδή ψευδεπίγραφα (έργα των οποίων ο συγγραφέας υπογράφει με το όνομα κάποιου αναγνωρισμένου προσώπου, προκειμένου να αποδώσει κύρος στα γραπτά του). Πρόκειται για τα περίφημα Μυστικά έργα: α) Περί της ουρανίου ιεραρχίας, β) Περί της εκκλησιαστικής ιεραρχίας, γ) Περί θείων ονομάτων και δ) Περί μυστικής θεολογίας, καθώς και διάφορες επιστολές. Τα Μυστικά έργα, γνωστά και ως Ψευδο-διονύσια, γράφτηκαν στο τέλος του 5 ου αιώνα και επηρέασαν βαθύτατα την πορεία της θεολογίας των μέσων χρόνων τόσο στην Ανατολή όσο και στη Δύση. Μαζί με τα έργα του ιερού Αυγουστίνου και του αγίου Γρηγορίου του Ναζιανζηνού υπήρξαν η βάση της ανανέωσης της θεολογικής κίνησης. ************************************************************************************************ The 2nd Sunday of Luke The Gospel reading is Luke 7: 31-35. These are Jesus' words, comparing the people who reject Him to two groups of children who refuse to agree on how to play together. Each group insists that the game they play must be the one they have chosen. They can't adapt themselves to play the game chosen by the others. The people of this generation, Christ goes on to say, are much like those children. When John the Baptist preached among them, they dismissed his self-discipline and fasting-- "neither eating bread nor drinking wine,"--as too severe. So, they said, it must be the work of a demon. But when they saw another kind of living practiced by the Son of Man, they didn't like that either, for the opposite reason. Jesus "has come eating and drinking" and so they call Him a glutton and a drunkard. They add to this another charge that apparently strikes them as going right along with gluttony and drunkenness: He is a "friend of tax collectors and sinners." Jesus assures His listeners, though, that "wisdom is justified by all her children." No matter what criticisms people may dream up to reject John and the Son of Man, they both are doing God's work, and the fruits of that work will become evident. The faith will spread, the numbers of disciples will grow, and those who have made up their minds to follow Christ will know that He is the Truth. An epistle reading for this day is Galatians 4: 8-21. Paul agonizes as he asks a question of the Galatians. Before they knew God, they were in "bondage to beings that by nature are no gods." But "...now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and beggarly elemental spirits, whose slaves you want to be once more?" Paul makes a specific complaint: "You observe days, and months, and seasons, and years." He is addressing Christians still young in the faith. They are being urged by certain teachers to go back to the Old Testament calendar, and to observe the Jewish laws that go with it. Paul wants them to remember, instead, how joyfully they responded when he preached the Gospel to them. They received him "as an angel of God, as Christ Jesus." But now, cajoled by false teachers, they are hostile to him. "What has become of the satisfaction you felt?" he asks in bewilderment. What has become of the faithfulness to the Gospel they once made up their minds to live by? Jesus wants His hearers not to manufacture reasons to reject the truth. Paul wants his hearers not to turn back from the faith he preached. It's time for all of them, and all of us, to make up our minds and follow. Orthodox Church in America
