FATHER JAMES MESSAGE While sorting through my library the other day, I came across a novel that has been called a brainy thriller and a gripping mix of murder and myth shrouded in conspiracy theory. A mesmerizing look at 2,000 years of Christian history, The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown is a page-turner that soared to the top of The New York Times best-seller list. At the heart of this mystery is a secret that goes back to Leonardo Da Vinci, and even earlier, to the days of Jesus Christ. The secret, which caused the book to become the topic of heated conversations in book clubs and Bible studies across the country, is that Jesus was not a single, celibate man, but was married to Mary Magdalene and that they had a child, which began a bloodline that continues to the present day. Was it a coincidence that I ran across this book as the Church prepared to celebrate the feast day of Mary Magdalene on July 22? One of the most fascinating questions in The Da Vinci Code involves the identity of the figure seated at the right hand of Jesus in Da Vinci s painting of the Last Supper. Is the feminine-looking figure in this painting John, a youthful, clean-shaven man, or could it be Mary Magdalene? The novel wants you to believe that the figure is Mary, and encourages the idea that she is His wife. In the painting of the Last Supper, there is no Holy Grail on the table, because, according to the Code, the Holy Grail is actually Mary Magdalene, the vessel that carried the child of Jesus. So, the Disciple John is not John, he s Mary, and she is the Holy Grail! Well, I have never read so many aberrations in one novel! Who is Mary Magdalene, the apostle to the Apostles? Scriptural accounts of her are found within 10 of the Orthros Resurrection Gospels and are part of the liturgical consciousness and worship cycle of the Orthodox Church. St. Luke says that seven demons were cast out of her by Jesus (8:2). St. Matthew says she was a witness to Christ s crucifixion and is present at His burial (37:32). St. Mark says she went to anoint the body of Jesus (26:1). St. John says she was the first to see Jesus in His resurrected body (20:10). Early in the morning, on the first day of the week, along with the other Myrrhbearing Women, Mary Magdalene rushed to the tomb, not as Jesus wife, but as His true follower. Deeply concerned about the rolling away of the stone from the door of the tomb, they experienced the greatest joy, the greatest Good News of human history! He is risen! In fact, it was she who was the first to see the risen Christ and break the news of the Resurrection announcing while giving out red eggs, Christ is Risen! As Orthodox Christians, we might be entertained by The Da Vinci Code as a James Bond-style thriller, but we cannot be entertained by the notion that Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene. This idea undermines the key Christian belief that Jesus is the Messiah, the fulfillment of thousands of years of prophecy; the One Who came to save the world from sin. Christ, however, Who is called the Bridegroom, did have a bride, the Church. This lovely metaphor would be inappropriate, and even a little creepy, if the early Christians thought that the Lord, Jesus, was married to Mary Magdalene. There is no mention anywhere in Scripture, hymnology or the undisputed writing of the Apostles or early Church Fathers about a marriage to Jesus, the perfect man and perfect God, or that she was a woman of ill repute. Living in a society of secular comfort, we can lose sight of the fact that our pristine Christian duty is to live as true Disciples of Christ, separating what is fiction from the Orthodox Christian faith. Visit the tomb of Christ, the only empty tomb of human history, which was visited by Mary Magdalene, and make no mistake; although it is empty, the tomb is full of the glorified Christ! The message for you is to keep connected to Christ, who is the Truth. There is no mystery or secret in achieving this: Seek him out every Sunday, like Mary Magdalene, by visiting the hollow building that is full of Him!

EPISTLE Romans 10:1-10 B rethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved. I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but it is not enlightened. For, being ignorant of the righteousness that comes from God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness. For Christ is the end of the law, that every one who has faith may be justified. Moses writes that the man who practices the righteousness which is based on the law shall live by it. But the righteousness based on faith says, Do not say in your heart, "Who will ascend into heaven?" (that is, to bring Christ down) or "Who will descend into the abyss?" (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). But what does it say? The word is near you, on your lips and in your heart (that is, the word of faith which we preach); because, if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For man believes with his heart and so is justified, and he confesses with his lips and so is saved. GOSPEL Matthew 8:28-34, 9:1 A t that time, when Jesus came to the other side, to the country of the Gergesenes, two demoniacs met him, coming out of the tombs, so fierce that no one would pass that way. And behold, they cried out, "What have you to do with us, O Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?" Now a herd of many swine was feeding at some distance from them. And the demons begged him, "If you cast us out, send us away into the herd of swine." And he said to them, "Go." So they came out and went into the swine; and behold, the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea, and perished in the waters. The herdsmen fled, and going into the city they told everything, and what had happened to the demoniacs. And behold, all the city came out to meet Jesus; and when they saw him, they begged him to leave their neighborhood. And getting into a boat he crossed over and came to his own city. Saints and Feasts of the Week CHRISTINA THE GREAT MARTYR OF TYRE Saint Christina was from Tyre in Syria, the daughter of a pagan named Urban. Enlightened in her heart to believe in Christ, she broke her father's idols, made of gold and silver, and distributed the pieces to the poor. When her father learned this, he punished her ruthlessly, then cast her into prison. The rulers subjected her to imprisonment, hunger, torment, the cutting off of her breasts and tongue, and finally impalement, in the year 200. PARASKEVE THE RIGHTEOUS MARTYR OF ROME Saint Paraskeve was born to pious parents, Agatho and Politia. Since she was born on a Friday (in Greek, Paraskeve), she was given this name. From childhood she was instructed in the sacred letters and devoted herself to the study of the divine Scriptures, while leading a monastic life and guiding many to the Faith of Christ. During the reign of the Emperor Antoninus Pius, she was apprehended because she was a Christian and was urged to worship the idols, but she answered with the words of Jeremias: "Let the gods that have not made heaven and the earth perish from off the earth". Because of this she endured torments and was beheaded. The faithful pray to her for the healing of eye ailments.
THANKING GOD As Orthodox Christians, we are called to a new way of seeing things a new way of life. Stewardship is obedience to the greatest commandment to love the Lord with all your heart, soul, mind and strength. We are called to bring ourselves and others to commit our lives to Jesus Christ in such a way that leads us to the joy of knowing him personally and profoundly. Thus, the question is not, How much do I give to stay in the club? or What are the dues? The real question we need to ask ourselves is How do I thank God for my many blessings? LEAVE THE REST TO GOD You cannot do everything, but you can do something. God wants you to do your best and leave the rest to him. Saint Theofan said, Exert all your strength, but rest your concern for success on God. The Lord doesn t expect any more from us than what we have to offer. But He does expect us to be faithful and that we do our very best for Him. We do our best and leave the rest to Him.
