Email: pancyprianflorida@gmail.com Message from the President... Angela Georgiadis SUMMER 2014 Issue 18 Christos Anesti Χριστος Ανεστη! It seems like it was only yesterday when we begun planning our Association activities last September and, all of a sudden, the summer season has arrived! Before you all proceed with your summer vacations and plans, I would like to update everyone on our most recent activities. In early March we had our signature Apokreatiko Glendi and Lemon Dance; once again, I take pride in acknowledging how successful the event was. As usual, the Lemon Dance competition was fun-filled with lots of laughter. I cannot do it justice with words, so check out the pictures in the centerfold! In addition the evening was complimented by the generosity of our beloved Evripides Kontos who kindly donated 30 copies of his autobiography to our Association. The books sold out very fast and at his request all proceeds will be donated to the Cyprus Children s Fund on behalf of the PanCyprians of Florida. As many of you know, the Cyprus Children s Fund supports needy children in Cyprus and is a very worthy organization every dollar reaches the needy children. This organization deserves our support and we urge all of you to adopt a Cypriot child in need. Three weeks after the Apokreatiko Glendi, we took part in the Tarpon Springs Greek Independence Day Parade. The weather was great, and once again we were provided with a Cypriot float by the generous Kontos family; it may sound repetitive, but we would be remiss not to acknowledge one more time the support we receive from this generous and caring Cypriot family. This year s EOKA memorial was held at St. George in New Port Richey. We thank Father Vasileios Tsourlis for organizing a spectacular and memorable Greek Independence and EOKA memorial. As you all know, this July 20 th will mark the 40 th anniversary of the brutal Turkish invasion of our beloved Cyprus. I am sure you agree that 40 YEARS IS LONG ENOUGH, and I ask for your help on trying to bring attention to this great injustice. Our association s efforts will include a July 20 th memorial service (details back page) letters to politicians, and a newspaper message/ad to appear in the Tampa Bay Times. Some of these efforts cost money, and others just time. Please do your part and lets make it our goal that on this 40 th anniversary we will speak out and inform our fellow American citizens of the great injustice against Cyprus. Please write letters to your congressmen/women and senators. Don t forget the social media! If you have a facebook account, consider posting something about Cyprus that will remind the world that we are still not free! PSEKA in coordination with the Cyprus Federation of America, the National Council, AHEPA, AHI, HALC, AJC and other freedom-loving and human rights organizations invites all of us to attend the annual PSEKA Cyprus Conference in Washington, DC - Dates July 15 17, 2014. Plan a vacation to DC and enjoy the museums and other attractions the area has to offer while showing your support for Cyprus. This year s conference will culminate with a demonstration/protest on the steps of the Capital Building which symbolizes freedom, democratic values and human rights. We, as American citizens of Greek descent, have a double obligation because we come from the birthplace of democracy and are citizens of the greatest democracy in the world! If ever there was a time to show your support, NOW IS THE TIME!! On behalf of the Board of Directors of the PanCyprian Association of Florida, we wish you a safe and happy summer and hope to see you in Washington, DC This Issue is sponsored by The Cyprus Federation of America Inc.

EVANTHIA AUGUSTINE was born in Nicosia, Cyprus, but she has roots in Komi Evanthia Kepir, the birthplace of her father, who had 5 brothers and one sister - all of whom have migrated. Migrating was quite common during the British Rule. Her grandma whom she was named after - did most of the upbringing. Evanthia s dream was to become a teacher and planned to attend the Greek Gymnasium in Nicosia. Sadly, she got Malaria right before the high school entrance exams and could not attend the Greek High School, so her grandmother signed her at the Samuel s Business school where she graduated with honors and with a solid knowledge of English and French. She subsequently got a job at the British Statistics Dept. She always wanted to travel and see places, but this was quite a feat back then. Then one day, while Evanthia was on vacation, she heard about the British Government s offering of six full scholarships in nursing at the American University in Beirut, Lebanon. Although nursing was not what she always wanted to do, she felt that this was a great and unique opportunity; she applied, and ended up winning one of the scholarships! Upon completing her nursing degree, she returned to Cyprus. A job at the Nicosia Hospital was waiting for her, and so did Costas - the love of her life. Not long after the two got engaged (in 1950), she received a letter from her father asking her to join him in America! Evanthia was ready and so was Costas. Three months after they got married they were on a ship for a month long journey to Pittsburg! Evanthia s new life had just begun. Having taken the State Boards, she was working as an RN, when her son George was born. Life was difficult for the family, especially for Costas. He had gotten a license to make perfumes, colognes, etc., but money was hard to come by. Evanthia kept going to school, majoring in pediatrics and anesthesia, while working at West Penn Hospital for eight years. During that time their second son Reno was born. Just as life got much better for Evanthia s family, the northern climate and allergies forced them to move to Miami. She got a job at Jackson Memorial Hospital, where she worked for 19 years. While in Miami, Evanthia earned a Bachelor s in Health Science and later a Masters in Hospital Administration. An unforeseen surgery in 1982, followed by another surgery and silicon implant in her hand turned her life upside down. In 1988 she left Miami for Bellaire Beach, where her son Reno lives. The same year Costas died while visiting Cyprus; unfortunately they never realized their dream to return to Cyprus where Costas had a big family. cont d from page 2 το πρώτο τρίμηνο του 2014 σε 72 εκ. Dr. Conferlete Carney, Provost of Tarpon Campus of St. Petersburg College, welcomed all the guests honoring Mr. Nick M. Billiris who was the Founding Provost of the Tarpon Spring Campus of SPC. After a few interesting guest speakers including family members, the unveiling of Nick M. Billiris' name on the Administration Building took place.
