The end times refers to God's judgment as we affirm and confess in the creed, "And he will come to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom shall have no end." This judgment is a powerful image since we are held accountable for the Gospel. During the service of Great Vespers for Pentecost, we read the following verses from the prophet Ezekiel: For I will take you from the nations, and gather you from the countries, and bring you into your own land. I will sprinkle clean water upon you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleanesses, and from all your idols and I will cleanse you. A new heart I wil1 give you, and a new spirit I will put within you; and I will take out of your flesh the heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to observe my ordinances. Ezekiel's words are very powerful since they remind us of the continuous temptation to worship idols and false gods even in our own day and age. Very often, we are just like the Israelites, turning away from the Lord, seeking gods which we construct with our own imagination and worshipping them on altars which we build to honor them. Our heart is often a heart of stone, refusing to listen and follow Jesus. Yet, all is not forsaken, since the Lord loves us so much he has sent his Spirit upon us in order to lead us back to repentance and to walk the narrow path towards the kingdom. We have been given a new lease on life, another chance to follow Jesus as he leads us to the knowledge of the truth which is God Himself. May we always remain steadfast in our faith, seeking the wil1 of God, offering prayer and praise to Him who reigns from His throne forever and ever. "Amen. Come, Lord Jesus" (Revelations 22:20).

PARISH COUNCIL MEETING UPDATE The following items of note resulted from business discussed at the May 13,2013 Parish Council meeting: Allocation process has been completed. Easter Community Picnic was successful and well attended. Change in menu was well received. Golf Tournament was a wonderful event. Many thanks to all who supported it. Festival preparations are on schedule. We have to address the needs for more help in the preparation of pastries. It was recommended that the community begin using beeswax candles as opposed to the paraffin ones we have been using. The Fellowship Hall extension and Breezeway enlargement was discussed and a recommendation was made to bring both projects to the General Assembly on Sunday, June 8. GREEK FESTIVAL 2014 WOW!! Dear Ladies of Philoptochos, Our end of the Year Pot luck is Tuesday June 11 th @ 6:30 pm. We will supply the main course, drinks and dessert. Please bring a side dish of your choice. Please feel free to bring your spouse and let s take this time to sit back and relax and have a chance to socialize and enjoy one another s company. We welcome EVERYONE to this event. I want to thank all the people who have helped with preparing lunches for H.O.P.E (Help our People Eat) and to those who have volunteered to pick up coolers on Saturday and bring to the church. We have had a great turn out from our youth and I am so proud of their willingness to step up to the plate and help out others. There have been times when I have had no one signed up to help and I have called some of the older GOYANS to help, and not once have they said No. Thank you! With that being said we have not had anyone offer to sign up for the remaining weeks of May or this summer. It only takes an hour out of a Saturday to prepare the lunches. Please volunteer if you have some time. This is a great program for us and I would hate to have to tell H.O.P.E that we are no longer able to help them because we do not have enough volunteers. We will have sign ups every Sunday after church and we also have a website that you can go to and sign up. Just type in http://www.volunteerspot.com/login/entry/4652050660103 on your browser and follow the sign up steps, it is very easy. Also remember during the summer, these kids go without lunches during the week, so this program is very important during the summer months. This is what we will need every Saturday: 1 person to pick up coolers which have all the supplies we will need to prepare the lunches. Coolers are to be picked up from The Children s Home on Reynolda Rd. and then brought to the church. This takes about 30 minutes. 4 or more people to come in after 11:00 am on a Saturday and prepare lunches. This consists of making a sandwich, then bagging a lunch bag with the sandwich, fruit and some type of cake. We have a sheet with a step by step direction on how to prepare the lunch. H.O.P.E (Help our People Eat) Winston-Salem is one of the top cities in the entire United States for hunger in families with children. North Carolina and Louisiana are now the top states for hunger in children ages 0-4. One of every four children in North Carolina has insufficient food to meet nutritional needs! In Forsyth County alone, there are more than 29,000 school-aged children who qualify for the federal lunch program because of inability to afford food; when you add the 9,000 preschoolers who qualify for WIC, we have almost 40,000 children in need of food. Many older children refuse help because of the stigma at school. Children too young for school are hungry during the crucial period of brain development, leading to lifelong consequences. While the Backpack Program covers Fridays/Saturdays to some extent, there is no program providing food to any of these children on Sundays. All children ages 0-18 who live in neighborhoods with low income and little or no access to healthy foods are eligible. We serve the food deserts, areas where access to fresh fruits and vegetables is limited by lack of availability, transportation or funds. Currently, there are 40 such identified areas in Forsyth County. We use drop off sites where shelters or churches are available and notify residents in advance of the times of delivery. Our bright green mobile food truck with a sound system (like an ice cream truck) goes through the neighborhood to call the families to the sites, signaling that food has arrived. Dear ACA Parents: Annunciation Christian Academy On behalf of the board of ACA I would like to extend a huge THANK YOU for all of your help at Greek Festival! We could not have pulled off another successful event without your help in setting up before, volunteering at the event and cleaning up afterward. Thank you for continuing to support ACA and for doing your part to make us the best preschool in Winston! --Chrissy McCullough ACA Chairman IOCC EMERGENCY HEALTH KITS The month of May is when we see all the beauty that comes with Spring. May is also a time when we see an increased likelihood of dangerous weather especially in our area. Tornados, hurricanes, fires, floods and earthquakes could strike at any time and any where in the world. We as Christians are directed to love our neighbor as ourselves. Love and care is especially needed when our neighbors, who may be across town or across the world are affected by natural and man made disasters. The Orthodox Christian Church in the United States help to respond to people in need throughout the world through IOCC (International Orthodox Christian Charities). We supported this organization earlier in the year through The Souper Bowl of Caring were we donated food and money for local and international relief. Another way that we can help in times of need is to gather and assemble Health Kits that can be sent around the country and around the world to those in need. Each Health Kit is comprised of the following One Hand cloth One Washcloth One Comb One pair Metal nail clippers One Bath size bar of soap (in original packaging) One Toothbrush 6 Band Aids (assorted sizes) These contents are then placed in a One Gallon plastic bag with a Zipper Closure. If you can donate any of these items during the month May through June 20th it would be greatly appreciated. Once the contents are donated; the plan is to have our children in Vacation Church School assemble the bags during some of their craft time. There will be a drop off box marked for this purpose, in the breezeway, beginning in May. Sunday School News from Annunciation Our a endance this year has improved beau fully! Congratula ons to the 9 th /10 th grade class for having the highest percentage of student par cipa on in Sunday School classes. There was only one Sunday when less than half the class a ended, and the average a endance for the year was 68%. To date, we have received 20 Coin Boxes from over 200 students and we have collected very close to $325 for OCMC Missions. We will con nue to accept boxes through our last day of Sunday School, June 1 st. Please be sure to turn your box in if you have collected any money. Our Angel Choir sang the Divine Liturgy on Mother s Day, and this was again a wonderful experience. We are so proud of our youth for taking part in this beau ful ministry. There were so many posi ve comments from those in the congrega on on how surprised they were with how lovely of the young ones sounded. We commend Connie Marshall and Alexandra Smalling for teaching our youth the hymns of our church. We will be celebra ng our graduates and those students with perfect a endance awards on Sunday, June 1 st. Please make every effort to be in church before the youth sermon. Vacation Church School classes will be offered for youth from age 3 through 5th grade. The Vacation Church School will run from 9:00 AM - Noon. YOUR CHILD MUST BE THREE YEARS OLD BY 4/15/14. PLEASE, NO CHILDREN IN DIAPERS. Tennis shoes are strongly recommended. Many times we use paints - please send your child with T-shirt or smock that can be washed easily.
