ΑΠΟΣΤΟΛΟΣ ΠΡΟΣ ΚΟΡΙΝΘΙΟΥΣ Β' Ϛ 16-18 Ποίος δε συμβιβασμός και ποία συνύπαρξις ημπορεί να νοηθή μεταξύ του ναού του Θεού και του ναού των ειδώλων; Διότι σεις-μη το λησμονείτε-είσθε ναός του Θεού του ζώντος, όπως άλλωστε έχει προφητεύσει ο Θεός και εις την Π. ΠΡΟΣ ΚΟΡΙΝΘΙΟΥΣ Β' Ζ 1-1 Εφ' όσον, λοιπόν, αγαπητοί, έχομεν αυτάς τας μαγάλας υποσχέσστου Θεού, ας καθαρίσωμεν τους εαυτούς μας από κάθε μολυσμόν σαρκός και πνεύματος, αγωνιζόμενοι και συνεχώς προχωρούντες μέχρι τέλους στον δρόμον της αγιότητος, με φόβον Θεού. EPISTLE The reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians. 6:16-18; 7:1 BRETHREN, you are the temple of the living God; as God said, "I will live in them and move among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Therefore come out from them, and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch nothing unclean; then I will welcome you, and I will be a father to you, and you shall be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty." Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, and make holiness perfect in the fear of God. 5

ΕΥΑΓΓΕΛΙΟ ΚΑΤΑ ΛΟΥΚΑΝ Ϛ 31-36 31 Και όπως θέλετε να κάνουν και να συμπεριφέρωνται απέναντι σας οι άνθρωποι, έτσι και σεις να πράττετε και να συμπεριφέρεσθε προς αυτούς. 32 Εάν αγαπάτε μόνον αυτούς που σας αγαπούν, ποία χάρις του Θεού και αμοιβή σας αξίζει; Διότι και οι αμαρτωλοί αγαπούν εκείνους που τους αγαπούν. 33 Και εάν κάνετε το καλόν εις εκείνους μόνον που σας ευεργετούν, ποία ανταμοιβή εκ μέρους του Θεού σας ανήκει; Διότι και οι αμαρτωλοί το ίδιον κάμνουν. 34 Και εάν δανείζετε εις εκείνους, από τους οποίους περιμένετε να πάρετε πίσω τα δανεικά, ποία ευμένεια και ανταπόδοσις από τον Θεόν σας αρμόζει; Διότι και οι αμαρτωλοί δανείζουν τους αμαρτωλούς, δια να λάβουν από αυτούς ομοίας εξυπηρετήσεις εις την ανάγκην των. 35 Αλλά σεις να αγαπάτε τους εχθρούς σας, να ευργετήτε και να δανείζετε, χωρίς να αποβλέπετε εις καμμίαν ανταπόδοσιν και θα είναι ο μισθός σας πολύς και θα είσθε εις την βασιλείαν των ουρανών παιδιά του Υψίστου, διότι και αυτός είναι αγαθός και ευργετικός και προς αυτούς ακόμη τους αχαρίστους και πονηρούς. 36 Γινεσθε λοιπόν εύσπλαχνοι στους γύρω σας ανθρώπους, όπως και ο Πατήρ σας είναι πολυεύσπλαγχνος προς όλους. For even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again. But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the selfish. Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful." 6

Αγία Χαριτίνη - 5 Οκτωβρίου SAINTS AND FEASTS Η Αγία Χαριτίνη άθλησε επί Διοκλητιανού (284-305 μ.χ.). Υπήρξε δούλη του συγκλητικού Κλαυδιανού (ή Κλαύδιου). Το 304 μ.χ. κάποιοι την κατήγγειλαν στο Δομετιανό ως Χριστιανή κι εκείνος την κάλεσε σε ανάκριση παρουσία και του κυρίου της. Όταν η Αγία ομολόγησε μετά παρρησίας την πίστη της στον Χριστό, υπεβλήθη σε φρικωδέστατα μαρτύρια. Της ξύρισαν το κεφάλι αλλά δια θαύματος, αμέσως το κεφάλι της ξαναγέμισε μαλλιά. Έπειτα βάζουν το κεφάλι της σε κάρβουνα αναμμένα και χύνουν από πάνω ξύδι. Κατόπιν καίνε τα πλευρά της με αναμμένες λαμπάδες, και με μια πέτρα στο λαιμό τη ρίχνουν στη θάλασσα. Αλλά και πάλι ο Θεός την έσωσε. Τότε διατάχθηκε να πάει σε πορνείο. Η Χαριτίνη, όμως, προσευχήθηκε, και η αγνή ψυχή της παραδόθηκε πλέον στο ζωοδότη Θεό. Charitina the Martyr - October 5 Saint Charitina contested for Christ during the reign of Diocletian, in the year 290. The handmaid of a certain Claudius, she was betrayed as a Christian to Dometian, the Count, before whom she fearlessly confessed Christ. After suffering the most terrible tortures, including the uprooting of her teeth and nails, she gave up her soul into the hands of the Lord. Άγιος Θωμάς ο Απόστολος - 6 Οκτωβρίου Ο Άγιος Θωμάς ο Απόστολος ήταν μεταξύ των δώδεκα μαθητών του Κυρίου και ανήκε σε οικογένεια αλιέων. Ο Θωμάς, λοιπόν, μετά την Ανάσταση του Χριστού και την πρώτη εμφάνισή Του στους μαθητές, δυσπιστούσε σ' αυτά που του έλεγαν αυτοί. Αλλά ο Κύριος επανεμφανίστηκε στους μαθητές μέσα στο υπερώον, όταν μεταξύ τους βρισκόταν και ο Θωμάς. Τότε ο Κύριος προέτρεψε το Θωμά να ψηλαφήσει τις πληγές από τα καρφιά που Τον σταύρωσαν, και να μη γίνεται άπιστος, αλλά πιστός. Εκθαμβωμένος ο Θωμάς, προσκύνησε και ανεβόησε: «Ο Κύριός μου και ο Θεός μου». Η δε απάντηση του Κυρίου ήταν τέτοια, που θα διδάσκει όλους όσους θέλουν να δυσπιστούν στην αλήθεια του Ευαγγελίου. Είπε, λοιπόν, ο Κύριος: «ότι εώρακάς με, πεπίστευκας, μακάριοι οι μη ιδόντες και πιστεύσαντες». Δηλαδή, λέει ο Κύριος στο Θωμά, πίστεψες επειδή με είδες. Μακαριότεροι και περισσότερο καλότυχοι είναι εκείνοι, που αν και δεν με είδαν, πίστεψαν. Η παράδοση αναφέρει ότι ο Θωμάς μετά την επιφοίτηση του Αγίου Πνεύματος πήγε και κήρυξε το Ευαγγέλιο στους Πέρσες, Μήδους και τους Ινδούς. Δηλαδή απόστολος του Ιησού Χριστού για να διδάξει μεταξύ εκείνων που εξέλεξε ο Θεός, την πίστη και την επίγνωση της αλήθειας, που οδηγεί στην ευσέβεια. Εκεί στη Σαμάρεια, δια του κηρύγματός του βάπτισε χριστιανό και το Σίμωνα το μάγο. Έπειτα, ο Φίλιππος συνάντησε στο δρόμο του τον Ευνούχο της βασίλισσας Κανδάκης, και αφού τον κατήχησε, βάπτισε και αυτόν Χριστιανό. Κατόπιν, πήγε στις Τράλλεις της Μικράς Ασίας, όπου με τη διδασκαλία του έπεισε όλους σχεδόν τους κατοίκους της πόλης να πιστέψουν στο Χριστό. ATTEMPTING THE IMPOSSIBLE A ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for. - John G. Shedd the greatest merchant in the United States By Jim Burns During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. It s a ghost, they said, and cried out in fear. But Jesus immediately said to them: Take courage! It is I. Don t be afraid. Lord, if it s you, Peter replied, tell me to come to you on the water. Come, he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat and walked on the water to Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, Lord, save me! Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. You of little faith, he said, why did you doubt? And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, Truly you are the Son of God. Matthew 14:25-33 In this story, Peter s lack of faith forced him to sink so that Jesus had to save him, but Peter is to be commended for stepping out of the boat and attempting to walk on the water. You ll notice the other disciples were not exactly fighting to join Peter! Living by faith sometimes means stepping out into the unknown and depending on God to carry us through. I m afraid that too many times I never step out of the boat and in my comfortable lifestyle I miss out on the fullness of God. People who walk by faith aren t afraid to attempt the impossible. I hope you are a person who places your life in the hands of God and walks on the side of the impossible. 14

This statement by Dr. Carl Bates reminds me to keep away from the comfortable and attempt something greater than my ability: There came a time in my life when I earnestly prayed, God I want Your power! Time wore on and the power did not come. One day the burden was more than I could bear. God, why haven t You answered that prayer? -Αν ο άνδρας νιώθει πράγματι έτσι όπως λέει, αυτό δείχνει ότι έχει πολύ φιλότιμο και η γυναίκα πρέπει να κάνει υπομονή. Όμως καλό είναι να μην πιστεύει εύκολα αυτά που ακούει να βλέπει βαθύτερα. Γιατί καμιά φορά μπορεί ο άνδρας να λέει δήθεν από αρχοντιά: «Να φύγω, να μη σας παιδεύω», ενώ θέλει στα αλήθεια να φύγει, γιατί έχει μπλέξει με άλλη. Σήμερα ο γάμος, όπως κατήντησε, έχει χάσει το νόημά του. Διαλύονται οικογένειες στα καλά καθούμενα. Ήρθε τις προάλλες στο Καλύβι κάποιος τελείως ζαλισμένος. Είχε δύο παιδιά από μια φιλενάδα. Παντρεύτηκε μία άλλη, έκανε ένα παιδί και τη χώρισε. Μετά ξαναπαντρεύτηκε κάποια άλλη, η οποία ήταν χωρισμένη και είχε δυο παιδιά από τον πρώτο γάμο της και ένα παιδί από έναν φίλο. Έκανε και μ αυτήν άλλα δύο. «Για βάστα, του λέω, από πόσες μανάδες είναι αυτά τα παιδιά και από πόσους πατεράδες;». Έτσι καταστρέφονται τα ταλαίπωρα τα παιδιά. Όσα είναι ευαίσθητα και δεν μπορούν να ξεπεράσουν την στεναχώρια, απελπίζονται και μερικά αυτοκτονούν. Άλλα πίνουν, για να ξεχνούν, άλλα μπλέκονται με τα ναρκωτικά. Που τα βρίσκουν τα χρήματα; Η πιο μικρή δόση ηρωίνης στοιχίζει τέσσερις χιλιάδες δραχμές. Η μεγάλη έξι ή επτά χιλιάδες. Και αυτά τα παιδιά είναι από τα ζωηρά της προηγούμενης γενιάς. Τα άλλα από το αυτόματο διαζύγιο, που είναι ακόμη μικρά, τι θα γίνουν; Φέτος το καλοκαίρι πόσα παιδιά πέρασαν από το Καλύβι που έπαιρναν ναρκωτικά! A re you Greek? This is the question I get asked the most when I tell someone that I am an Orthodox Christian. At first, this question rankled, because I am not Greek. (I am, among other things, Lithuanian.) Mind you, I would have no problem being Greek. It s a wonderful, ancient culture with much to recommend it. But what rankled was the sense that being Orthodox means being Greek. It is a touchy subject for many Orthodox Christians in America, especially those who converted to the faith, because the implication of such a close identification of culture with faith implies that the faith is not really for people who aren t from that culture. And no doubt it can also be touchy for the many Orthodox Christians in America who are from traditionally Orthodox cultures who are not Greeks. There are actually quite a lot of them in America, there are Orthodox churches representing the Albanian, Antiochian, Bulgarian, Carpatho-Russian, Georgian (the Caucasian republic, not the southern state), Romanian, Russian, Serbian and Ukrainian traditions. But I ve come to see the question as mostly the fault of the Orthodox themselves, who have not quite figured out how to convey that Orthodoxy being Christianity is for everyone and doesn t require a particular cultural identification. We eventually will figure it out, I think. Roman Catholics in America for a long time were pretty ethnicity-bound, as well (everyone knew which was the Polish church and which the Irish), but now hardly anyone expects a Roman Catholic to be from Rome. And it s less than a century since the average American Lutheran church conducted services in German, Swedish, or Norwegian. I also can t blame the asker of that question too much, because recent demographic studies have shown that some 60 percent of Orthodox in America belong to the Greek Archdiocese of America. So, statistically speaking, Are you Greek? is a pretty decent guess, even if I wish it were irrelevant. 17

T hat the question is a viable one points to something that may be less obvious to those outside of Orthodoxy s circle, and that is that the Orthodox in America are in the process of figuring out just who we are. It s not a doctrinal issue we do not, for instance, vote every few years on moral standards or doctrines. We are also free of the churning wars of worship innovation that seem to keep Evangelical blogdom busy and inspire laments among traditional Catholics. For better or for worse (depending on one s view), the Orthodox aren t going to be giving up on our dogmatic ecumenical councils or revising our Divine Liturgy. Neither new morality nor Novus Ordo for us. But we do have an identity problem, nonetheless, namely, that Orthodoxy is divided into roughly a dozen jurisdictions in America. This administrative division is wholly against our canonical tradition, which stipulates that for any given piece of real estate there should only be one bishop who has territorial authority that s been our standard for about 1,700 years or so. But that s not how things work for the Orthodox in America, where we have overlapping territories. In the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania where I live, for instance, there are nine Orthodox parishes with six bishops governing them, none of whom live anywhere near here. This is a problem not just because it s administratively complicated, but because it presents a pastoral mess. Parishioners can literally shop between different Orthodox churches in their area to find the one whose policies and traditions suit them best. Don t like the membership requirements to have your child baptized? Find another parish. Don t like how long pre-marital counseling takes? Find another parish. And if a parish splits, a rebellious faction does not have to remain in opposition to their bishop they can just find a new one. Instead of having to learn to live as a single Orthodox Christian family with all the messiness and possibility for growth that that entails, we can just retreat into our respective comfort zones. This problem also drains our resources. Instead of a single department of Christian education (we all have the same faith, after all), we have several. The same goes for legal departments, Internet ministries, clergy affairs, retirement, insurance the list goes on. What s worst about all this, though, is that we present the appearance of fragmented, ethnically-defined sects rather than the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church we regard ourselves as being. So how did we get into this mess? And is anything being done about it? 18

I n the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, several waves of Orthodox immigration arrived nearly simultaneously in America, and they brought with them their own traditions, customs and clergy. And it only seemed natural for most of them to keep connections back home going strong, including through their churches. Communism in Eastern Europe and the break-up of the Ottoman Empire affected traditionally Orthodox lands in profound ways, sending out immigrants across the world and dividing Orthodox people against each other. Orthodoxy in America became splintered not just along ethnic lines but along political lines, as well. And sometimes ethnic divisions even became microcosmic, with different factions sharing everything about their culture except the particular village of origin back home. At various points, there have been four Antiochian factions, two Greek, two Ukrainian, four Russian, two Serbian, two Carpatho-Russian, two Bulgarian, two Albanian and two Romanian. Is it any wonder that we sometimes say, I don t belong to an organized religion I m Orthodox? But there is hope. Many of the divisions have healed. The Greeks, Antiochians, Serbs, Ukrainians and Carpatho-Russians each now have only one canonical jurisdiction in America. And there are also pan-orthodox agencies that do ministry on behalf of all the Orthodox in America International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC), the Orthodox Christian Mission Center (OCMC) and the Fellowship of Orthodox Christians United to Serve (FOCUS), to name a few. And most of the college students who participate in Orthodox Christian Fellowships (OCF) on campus connect with each other more on the basis of common faith than common culture. And something even bigger is happening. Since 2010, all the active Orthodox bishops in America around fifty of them have been meeting annually. This annual meeting is called the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops in the United States of America. They re not a synod. They don t have actual decision-making authority. But they do have a task, a task that was given to them by their mother churches overseas find a way to heal the anomaly that is life on the ground in the so-called diaspora. O urs is only one such assembly. The overlap problem is not unique to America. There are twelve other assemblies, ranging from Canada to Central and South America, from Scandinavia to Oceania. But America s is the biggest, and it may set the pattern for what could happen elsewhere. 19

The Assembly has fourteen committees to talk about everything from ecumenical relations to monasticism to youth ministry. And of course the big committee is the Committee for Canonical Regional Planning, whose job it is to figure out the nuts and bolts of how we get from where we are to where we ought to be. Since the Assembly s introduction into Orthodox American life, it has been met with a range of reactions: hope, skepticism, ambivalence, and even outright cynicism. Some say it s all just a conspiracy of the Ecumenical Patriarchate based in Istanbul, Turkey and the mother jurisdiction of the Greeks, Ukrainians, Carpatho-Russians and (some of) the Albanians in America. Some say this is our best hope for unity yet. Some say this is just a stalling action so that the mother churches can keep getting donations from their rich American parishes. And some say nothing is actually happening at all, that the Assembly is just a lot of incense and mirrors. Unity s been tried in the past, of course. But some these efforts were unilateral such as when in 1970 the Russian church gave its American jurisdiction self-governance and renamed it the Orthodox Church in America and hoped the various jurisdictions would just join up. Others were multi-lateral, such as the Federation that was formed in the 1940s to try to get Orthodoxy recognized as a religion by the government so that its clergy wouldn t be drafted. And there was also SCOBA (the Standing Conference of Canonical Orthodox Bishops in America), which was the heads of the various jurisdictions getting together every so often from the 1960s until 2010. But all of these efforts lacked what the Assembly now has official, unanimous sanction from the mother churches to which the various jurisdictions owe their allegiance. And there s also a deadline: An international Orthodox council is set to meet in 2016 to decide upon this and other questions, and the Assembly has to submit a plan for that council s consideration. S o now there is an imperative that was never there before. And even though parts of the Assembly might seem moribund to the casual observer, some of the committees are actually extremely active. It s also hard to imagine what kinds of knots have to be untied. How do you resolve, for instance, the difference between requiring confession before every reception of holy communion and seeing ongoing communion as being essentially parallel to regular confession? Do you even have to? One thing that gives me a lot of hope is the difference between what I saw at the first Assembly meeting in 2010 in Manhattan (I escorted my bishop and helped him with his luggage) and what has been relayed to me about the one that met on September 17 19, 2014. In 2010, most of the bishops kept to themselves and their own jurisdictions, with little interaction between them. But in 2014, discussion was reportedly animated and engrossing, and even where there was disagreement, it was clear that the bishops had become invested enough in each other enough to engage. 20

And if they can become invested in knowing one another, then it is possible that a common life together might be formed. But this is not an easy process. Although this may be the first generation where all the bishops speak English, for around half of them, it s not their first language. Many of them were also not born here, and in that they are not really representative of their flocks. The Assembly is an international and multi-cultural gathering. At least two proposals for unity were put forward at the recent Assembly meeting one which directly addressed the territorial issues immediately and also a two-track proposal which initially unifies various ministries and departments to nurture a common life, while solving the territorial question more gradually. What s most interesting is that now the bishops are talking brass tacks, having a spirited discussion over concrete proposals for phased action to make a unity that is not just on paper but in reality. Someone from outside the Orthodox Church may look at all this confusion and declare us hopeless. Certainly, this division makes it harder to see American Orthodox Christians as the local representatives of the second largest Christian communion in the world. Yet Orthodox doctrine, worship and spiritual life are remarkably unified despite all our administrative confusion, disunity and even rivalries and given a choice between administrative confusion and confusion over doctrine and worship, I ll take the first any day. Yes, we have an untidy organization, but we know who we are when it comes to what really matters. Orthodox is Orthodox, no matter what other adjectives it might wear. STEWARDSHIP 2015 LIFE ON EARTH IS A TRUST Rick Warren - "The Purpose Driven Life" Our time on earth and our energy, intelligence, opportunities, relationships, and resources are all gifts from God that he has entrusted to our care and management. We are stewards of whatever God gives us. This concept of stewardship begins with the recognition that God is the owner of everything and everyone on earth. The Bible says, "The world and all that is in it belong to the LORD; the earth and all who live on it are his."(psalm 24:1) We never really own anything during our brief stay on earth. God just loans the earth to us while we're here. It was God's property before you arrived, and God will loan it to someone else after you die. You just get to enjoy it for a while. When God created Adam and Eve, he entrusted the care of his creation to them and appointed them trustees of his property. The Bible says, "[God] blessed them, and said, `Have many children, so that your descendants will live all over the earth and bring it under their control. I am putting you in charge.' "(Genesis 1:28) The first job God gave humans was to manage and take care of God's "stuff'" on earth. This role has never been rescinded. It is a part of our purpose today. Everything we enjoy is to be treated as a trust that God has placed in our hands. The Bible says, "What do you have that God hasn't given you? And if all you have is from God, why boast as though you have accomplished something on your own?"(i Corinthians 4:2) 22

Rev. Rick Warren writes: Years ago, a couple let my wife and me use their beautiful, beach-front home in Hawaii for a vacation. It was an experience we could never have afforded, and we enjoyed it immensely. We were told, "Use it just like it's yours," so we did! We swam in the pool, ate the food in the refrigerator, used the bath towels and dishes, and even jumped on the beds in fun! But we knew all along that it wasn't really ours, so we took special care of everything. We enjoyed the benefits of using the home without owning it. Our culture says, "If you don't own it, you won't take care of it." But Christians live by a higher standard: "Because God owns it, I must take the best care of it that I can." The Bible says, "Those who are trusted with something valuable must show they are worthy of that trust."(1 Corinthians 4:2) Jesus often referred to life as a trust and told many stories to illustrate this responsibility toward God. In the story of the talents, (Matthew 25:14-29) a businessman entrusts his wealth to the care of his servants while he's away. When he returns, he evaluates each servant's responsibility and rewards them accordingly. The owner says, "Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness. (Matthew 25:21) At the end of your life on earth you will be evaluated and rewarded according to how well you handled what God entrusted to you. That means everything you do, even simple daily chores, has eternal implications. If you treat everything as a trust, God promises three rewards in eternity. First, you will be given God's affirmation: He will say, "Good job! Well done!" Next, you will receive a promotion and be given greater responsibility in eternity: "I will put you in charge of many things." Then you will be honored with a celebration: "Come and share your Master's happiness." Most people fail to realize that money is both a test and a trust from God. God uses finances to teach us to trust him, and for many people, money is the greatest test of all. God watches how we use money to test how trustworthy we are. The Bible says, "If you are untrustworthy about worldly wealth, who will trust you with the true riches of heaven?"(luke 16:11) This is a very important truth. God says there is a direct relationship between how I use my money and the quality of my spiritual life. How I manage my money ("worldly wealth") determines how much God can trust me with spiritual blessings ("true riches"). Let me ask you: Is the way you manage your money preventing God from doing more in your life? Can you be trusted with spiritual riches? Jesus said, "From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked."(luke 12:48) '' Life is a test and a trust, and the more God gives you, the more responsible he expects you to be. 23
