Father Christos Message THE CHURCH IS THE BODY OF CHRIST The Apostle Paul uses a wonderful image-icon that even I with my little brain can understand it, when first heard, independently of the great mystical depth it hides; the Church is presented as a Body. What this means the Apostle will resolve for me little by little, as to perceive what is hidden behind the image. I will not do here an extensive commentary of his Epistles. Besides, what human mind can fully understand the depth of Paul's mind? The Apostle Paul by saying that the Church is the Body of Christ wants to accent that the Church is not a mass of people that came together somewhere accidentally, but a whole of people organically connected among themselves. The mass is a mechanical exterior, temporal gathering of people- just like a crowd of men at a railroad station. All the people there, are found under the same roof, under the same exterior conditions. They were found there for some reason that only concern themselves individually. These people have no interior (esoteric) connection among themselves. As they were found at the station, the same way they will depart. These people DO NOT constitute the Body. Without being exact in comparison and without being exactly the same, I could say that the gathering of those people constitute just about what is a pile of rocks one next to the other or one on top of the other, fallen by chance there without them being connected purposely. Example: being built and having constitute, connected with cement or clay, one wall, one building or something else. It is not the same with the church as the Body of Christ. In the mass of people there is no esoteric connection and relation of people among them. That is why the mass does not constitute a body. The Church though does not constitute a mass. The relations of the people in the church are relations of mutual help, mutual dependence, reciprocity, mutual influence. It is relation of LOVE. No member can live on its own for itself. That is why all together constitute one living organism. As many of us that believe in Christ we are one because we were baptized in the holy baptismal font, in One Holy Spirit and we all became one Body. My beloved parishioners, all of you Orthodox Christians are one body, The Body of Christ and everyone of you constitute of a member part of that body. St. Paul accents that just like the body and the head is one man and so is Christ and the members of the church constitute one organic total, single and undivided. The whole Christ is the Head and the Body. For this Christ and Church are inseparable. And all of us belong in the Body of Christ. Come therefore with a joyful repentant spirit in the Church. Without you the Body is suffering. Not that Christ as God is suffering but as Godman His heart is "heavy" to see you from a distance. Do not forget, that when the flower is cut from the stem soon it will die. But when it remains on it, even though it will die because of the season another one will grow at the appointed time. As much as you stay away from the Church, much more will your children remain away. And a tree which bears no fruit Christ cuts it down and throws it inside the fire. The Lord and Savior is anxiously waiting at the gate to embrace you with all His love. I pray for your return to the One Body. Father Christos (Greek translation next page)

Fr. Christos Letter translated...

Dear Youth and Parents of Holy Trinity: On March 3 rd, Clean Monday (Kathara Defthera), the Holy Orthodox Church entered into the period of Great Lent, which lasts through Lazarus Saturday (April 12 th ). Clean Monday represents the time of "cleaning" up the clutter of our lives and begin focusing on the spiritual journey of Great Lent and on our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The four focusing points we should all try to adhere to on Clean Monday are as follows: fasting, prayer, giving alms (to the poor and needy) and learning more about our Christian faith. All of these actions might seem to us as separate activities, but when put together, they become quite a weapon against sin. They help us to grow spiritually within ourselves, to connect with God and to reach out to others. Fasting: Through the discipline of fasting from certain foods, "we clean our own house" spiritually, controlling our habits in two very specific ways: what we eat and how much we eat. It is not easy saying no to certain foods, but if we understand and keep in mind that we are doing this for God, then it becomes easier for us. When we fast for God, we do not brag, complain or do anything else to draw attention to ourselves for others to see that we ARE FASTING. We fast to show God, not to show off! The fast should not only be about foods, but from other actions too, like: putting time limits on T.V. watching, cell phone use and texting, playing video games and listening to music. We should allow ourselves time everyday for peace of mind and time for prayer. Pray: We pray for help and strength from God to fast with discipline and humility. During Lent, we come together much more frequently to pray, thus understanding people and what their needs may be, which now leads us into giving and learning. Giving: All people, even those who don't have money (like children), can share what they have with those in need. Money isn't the only thing we can give back to the church and to others. We can also give of our time and of whatever talent we may have to share. During this Lenten period, ask your parents or if you are older, think of ways in which you can give other than by money. Learn: Jesus Christ came into the world to teach His followers what He expects from them. During Great Lent, we, too, can increase our Bible reading time, select a book about the faith, or participate in a class or retreat. Whenever we strive to learn more about our faith, the better equipped we will be and the more joyous our Paschal celebration will become to us on a personal level. May God grant all of you the spirit of understanding and guidance throughout this Great Lenten period and may you personally achieve a renewed sense of closeness with the Lord. God bless you all and your families. In Christ, Father Nick Father Nick s Message

Dear Parishioners, The Parish Council Presidents Message Αγαπητά Μέλη της Ενορίας, I hope this letter finds you happy and healthy as we prepare for Great Lent. It is an honor and a privilege to serve as your Parish President and I will strive to emulate the devotion and hard work exemplified by those who have preceded me in this office. Together with the Parish Council, I look forward to working with you to keep our Community moving forward. This month, we welcomed Father Chris Christofidis to our Community as our newly appointed Proistamenos, who will serve our spiritual needs together with Father Nick. We pray that we are blessed with many years of benefiting from their service, guidance and wisdom. Despite the challenges presented by the weather, our Community maintained much of its ambitious Agenda. In recent weeks, we celebrated Godparents Sunday with Godparents reciting reconfirmation prayers and attending Sunday School classes with their Godchildren followed by a luncheon sponsored by our Philoptochos. The proceeds were donated to an Orthodox orphanage in Central America. Another Community effort was also a resounding success with congratulations to the GOYA for hosting a terrific weekend of sportsmanship and fellowship for nearly 300 Goyans from our Metropolis. The tournament was among the largest ever held by Wilmington. We are grateful for the hard work of the parents, advisors and all those volunteers from the Community whose aid to the Goyans helped make this event a testament to Greek Orthodox Christian Fellowship. As the persistent winter weather challenges our patience, we must not let it diminish our drive, especially with the Festival preparations that have commenced in our kitchen. This is a Community effort that transcends all ministries and commands everyone s participation. Please call the office for information and make it a point to lend a hand in this critical endeavor. Volunteers gather on a daily basis and your help is desperately needed. We cannot place this burden on a few stalwarts. I hope to see you there. In the meantime, I am available at your convenience to discuss any suggestions or concerns you may have. The boxes will be collected on April 16, 2014. In March, the children will be participating in two processions in Church. The first will be on the Sunday of Orthodoxy. Please remember to send your child s favorite icon with them on that Sunday. The second will be on March 23, 2014, the third Sunday of Lent, Veneration of the Cross. Our next major event is the Sunday School Junior Oratorical Festival that will take place on Sunday, April 6, 2014. This event will take place in the Community Center, after the Divine Liturgy; and will feature all students in Pre- K through High School to prepare them for the Saint John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival when they are older. Please note that our teachers have prepared presentations to include all children in the class therefore, your child will have a part in this program. Please be sure to have your child attend Church on Sunday, April 6 for this program. Please contact Amalea, Maroula or your child s teacher for more details. There will be no Sunday School on April 13 and April 20, 2014 so we can all celebrate Palm Sunday and Pascha. Our year will end on May 18, 2014 with Awards & Graduation Sunday.

Various Dr. Costas G. Fountzoulas Eastern Roman Empire-Early history To maintain control and improve the administration, various ways to divide the work of the Roman Emperor by sharing it between individuals were tried between 285 and 324, 337 to 350, 364 to 392, and again between 395 and 480 A.D. Each division was a form of power-sharing for the ultimate imperium remained intact and therefore the empire remained legally one state, although the coemperors often saw each other as rivals or enemies. In 293 A.D, the Roman emperor Diocletian created a new administrative system, the tetrarchy, to guarantee security in all endangered regions of his Empire. He associated himself with a co-emperor (Augustus), and each co-emperor then adopted a young colleague given the title of Caesar, to share in their rule and eventually to succeed the senior partner. The tetrarchy collapsed, however, in 313 and a few years later Constantine I (Great) reunited the two administrative divisions of the Empire as sole Augustus. Constantine the Great or Saint Constantine (Flavius Valerius Aurelius Constantinus Augustus in Latin; 27 February c. 272 22 May 337), was Roman Emperor from 306 to 337. Constantine was the son of Flavius Valerius Constantius, a Roman army officer, and his wife Helen or Saint Helen. in 293 A.D, Constantius became Caesar, the deputy emperor in the west. In 330 A.D., Constantine moved the capital of the Empire to Constantinople, which he founded as a second Rome on the site of Byzantium, a city well-positioned across the trade routes between East and West. Constantine introduced important changes into the Empire's military, monetary, civil and religious institutions. As regards his economic policies in particular, he has been accused by certain scholars of "reckless taxation", but the gold solidus he introduced became a stable currency that transformed the economy and promoted development. Under Constantine the Great, Christianity did not become the exclusive religion of the state, but enjoyed imperial preference. He supported Christianity with generous privileges. Constantine established the principle that emperors could not settle questions of doctrine by themselves, but should summon instead general ecclesiastical councils, the Synods. His convening of the Synod of Arelate in France and the First Council of Nicaea indicated his interest in the unity of the Church, and showcased his claim to be its head.

Holy Trinity Food Pantry ~ Food For Thought ~ In the year 1980, there were 200 food banks in America. Thirty-four years later, in 2014, there are now 40,000 food banks all across our great nation, filling in the most crucial void of our existence FOOD Besides our food bank, local agencies that offer food for the poor, (Salvation Army, Sunday Breakfast Mission, Emmanuel Dining Room, Church Kitchens) are reporting an overflowing number of people who are daily in need of a hot meal; usually, their only meal of the day. Because of these facts and need, we are again asking our Holy Trinity Parishioners to keep filling our food bins by the Church office with any item that will not spoil. Always needed are: Canned soups, fish, vegetables, meat, (any canned item), cereals, rice, sugar, flour, peanut butter, jelly, macaroni & cheese, coffee, tea, pasta, pasta sauces, baby food, - any food that will not spoil. We want to thank you for your February food donations. Enough food was gathered to make deliveries to the Sunday Breakfast Mission and to the Claymont Community Center. Consider feeding the poor as your Christian involvement during the Holy Season of Lent. Thank You

Personally, I will miss the years I have had in Goya, but they will be great memories that I can always look back on. We are so fortunate to have something that connects all of us, the Greek Orthodox youth. I hope you all have a great time this weekend, and I wish the best of luck to all the teams participating!
