SAINT- SPYRIDON.ORG Hymn of Note Our study of the eleven hymns of the Resurrection finds us in the Paschal period, having come to witness for ourselves the Lord s rising from the dead. In the last Hymn of Note we were left with the image of Mary Magdalene staying behind at the empty tomb, weeping because she could find where Jesus was. In her staying at the tomb, in her desire to see her Teacher once again, Jesus appears to her. At first, she does not recognize Him but thinks Him to be the gardener. Jesus then calls her by her name, and immediately Mary s eyes are opened and she falls at His feet and is clinging to Him. This is where our hymn of note takes over and describes this scene of Mary at the feet of the Risen Lord. Mary s hot tears did not flow in vain, for she was granted Angels to teach her and the sight of you, O Jesus. But, as a weak woman, she still had earthly thoughts, and therefore she was sent away so as not to touch you, O Christ; but nevertheless she was sent as a herald to your Disciples, to whom she spoke the good tidings, announcing your ascent to the Father s inheritance. With her make us also worthy of your manifestation, O Master and Lord. (Listen to the hymn at http://www.ec-patr.net/en/sounds_htm/eothina.htm) Mary Magdalene has been one of the most misunderstood figures in Christian history, due mostly non-orthodox teachings perpetuated through Hollywood and presented as fact rather than fiction. In reality, Mary was from the town of Madgala in Galilee, and had pious parents who raised her to be faithful and loving toward both God and neighbor. She had chosen for herself a life of chastity, learning, and charity. However, the devil attacked her spirit and she was beset with torment by them. When she met Jesus, He healed her of her torment and then Mary Magdalene followed Him and His disciples even unto the cross. Mary Madgalene was not the sinful woman that anointed Jesus feet, nor the adulteress that Jesus saved from execution. Mary was simply one of the people Jesus healed and who, in her gratitude, became one of the most dedicated of His followers. In our hymn of note, she is beset too much by grief to comprehend that Christ had risen. It is not until the Risen Lord calls her by name that she realizes the miracle of the Resurrection. But then she tries to cling on His feet and Jesus stops her. He tells her not to cling to Him because He has not yet ascended to His Father and the Father of us all. Jesus does not prevent people from touching Him after His resurrection. He called the apostle Thomas to touch Him as He invites all of us to partake of His body and blood. In this occasion, however, Christ is trying to instruct Mary to accept that He is not the same as He was before. His goal is to fulfill the redemption of human nature by ascending with that nature to His Father. He is risen not in order to return to life as it was before the Cross but to bring humanity with Him into full and complete communion with God when He takes His seat at the right hand of God the Father. Mary Magdalene sought to cling to Jesus earthly life but He helped her realize that first of all He is God, the redeemer of our fallen nature. Therefore, when we come to approach Christ in prayer, in church, and in Holy Communion, He may appear to us in a lowly form, in the elements of bread and wine, for that is all our earthly eyes can handle. However, we cannot come to Jesus thinking of Him only in earthly realities. We must not seek Him only as the Incarnate Lord who walked among us. We must seek Him as our Risen Lord, our God, our Redeemer. When we address Him, He is not just a man, but He is the Lord and Savior of our body, our mind, and our soul. Only then, when He addresses us by name and we come to hear His voice, then we may touch Him, then we may partake of Him, then we may receive Him as our Lord and our God. Amen. Fr. Tilemahos Alikakos 2 The Voice

ICONOGRAPHY PROJECT UPDATE ICONOGRAPHY PROJECT UPDATE During the month of April, we began the installation of Phase 1 of our iconography. The icons of the Ascension, Pentecost, and the Sunday of Thomas were placed above the solea and the altar. In June, the eight medallion icons above the solea, and the two icons of St. Spyridon s life along with six medallions in the west arch, are scheduled for installment. This will complete Phase 1. The only icon that has not been donated in Phase 1 is the icon of St. Spyridon s miracle. As soon as we have enough donations for Phase 2 we will proceed to place icons over the north and south arches. The icons that are still available are: The Adoration of the Magi The Flight to Egypt The Wedding in Cana The Transfiguration The Raising of Lazarus The Last Supper Prophet Jesse the father King David St. Joseph the Betrothed Five medallion icons More information on these icons is available on our website and in brochures available at the church office. If you are interested in donating one of the above icons please contact Fr. Tilemahos. We thank Mr. & Mrs. Sotirios Charalambos for their donation of the Icon of St. Efraim the New. We also thank Mr. Konstantinos Brown, Mr. Tom Halikias, and all the anonymous donors for their donation to the Iconography Fund. St. Spyridon Hellenic Orthodox Church 3

Dear Friends and Parishioners, As we approach the most sacred period of the Great Lent which is Holy Week, we pray that Our Lord s Resurrection give us health, love and humility so that we may continue to work for our Holy Orthodox Church. The ladies of Philoptochos started the Lenten Season with the Kathara Deftera Lenten Dinner that took place after the Compline Service. It was a very spiritual evening and we thank the ladies who helped with the preparations and the serving of the traditional Lenten foods. On April 26th we hosted our Annual Lenten Dinner after the Presanctified Liturgy. His Eminence Metropolitan Iakovos presided and we welcomed all the faithful from the many parishes of our Metropolis. The Lenten Dinner was offered freely, but donations made by our guests and Philoptochos members were given to Fr. Athenagoras for his mission work in Cuba. On Palm Sunday we hosted the traditional Palm Sunday luncheon. Many thanks to Harrison s Restaurant and the Mastorakos and Nakos families for donating the fish, and to Southfork Restaurant who helped us prepare the meal. Also many thanks to all our volunteers and supporters of this event. Also on the same day we held our annual Bake Sale of Easter pastries; the proceeds will help the needy in our community. Please don t forget our Annual Mother s Day Luncheon that will take place on May 12, 2013. My sincere thanks and appreciation to all of you for your continuous support and your love for philanthropy. Kali Anastasi from all the Philoptochos Members. PHILOPTOCHOS NEWS CHERUBS April 9th was Joanna Spinos' last day as the Cherubs advisor.
