GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH 435 KEATING DRIVE WINSTON-SALEM, NC 27104 ADDRESS SERVICE REQUESTED TIME SENSITIVE MATERIAL PLEASE EXPEDITE OCTOBER 2018 Non-Profit Organiz. U.S. Postage Winston-Salem, NC Permit # 168 Who is my neighbor? (Is our wealth a blessing?) From Fr. Steve Dalber Many times in Scripture we are instructed to love God and our neighbor. Jesus explains to us that if we don't love our neighbor we will not inherit Paradise. Because our salvation depends on it, it would seem that we should be constantly seeking out our neighbor in order to love them. Why are we Christians? Is it because we are seekers of the Kingdom? Is it because we want to be saved in the final days? Is it because we wish to be resurrected into a new, eternal life and a new world? All of the above should be the obvious answer for all Christians. However, according to Jesus, none of the above is available to us if we don't practice loving our neighbor. This may be a surprise to those that believe that just being baptized or "re-born" is enough. In reality, though, our Lord expects a great deal more from us than rituals and lip-service. Our actions are where the rubber meets the road. Do we truly love our neighbor as ourselves? Our Lord s reply when asked "Who is my neighbor?" was a parable within which a man falls among robbers. He is stripped, robbed, beaten and left on the side of the road half dead. Many pass him by "not wanting to get involved." One man however stopped and helped. Jesus taught that the man that stopped to help was showing love to his neighbor by showing him mercy. He didn't know the beaten man. The man had nothing to give him in return, and yet he took care of him as he would take care of himself. In order for us to understand what it means to love someone as much as we love our self, we must ask ourselves "how much do we love our self?" What sort of things do we do for our self? How do we provide for our self? How do we feed our self? How do we dress our self? How do we house our self? How do we transport our self? In order to truly love our neighbor as ourselves, it seems logical that what we do for ourselves is what we should do for our neighbor. Now the plot thickens. If this is the requirement for salvation, then who can be saved? Few if any of us, can be saved. Our Lord said, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than it is for a rich man to enter the Kingdom." As wealthy American Christians, these are hard words. We count our wealth as a blessing, but is it really? How willing are we to give up our possessions in order to share them with others? If someone is sick or dying will we help them? If someone is hungry will we feed them? If someone needs to hear the Good News, will we share it with them? If someone is in pain will we comfort them? Who is my neighbor? Everyone is my neighbor; The Homeless - The Destitute - The Hungry - The Thirsty - The Weary - The old person needing help carrying their groceries - The child who needs protection - Those in the hospital - Those in prison. Wherever there is a need, there is our neighbor. We have neighbors all over the world. Those that we see every day and those we don't see but know are there. When we stand in judgment we will be asked; did you love your neighbor? Please don't ask our Lord, who is my neighbor? It will be too late then. Let us love our neighbor now while we are still able. All our wealth is worth nothing in the Kingdom, therefore let's invest it where it will accumulate great dividends. And always remember that if we fall short, our God is a merciful God who rewards not only our success but also our effort. A camel through the eye of a needle is impossible for men, but all things are possible for God.

Intellectual Assent Followed by Commitment Mr. Gallup conducted a poll a few years ago and discovered that 95% of Americans believe in God. These are remarkable statistics. On the basis of this poll we should expect to have a nation of saints. But far from it. Many of the things we see happening in our nation reflect anything but faith in God. Obviously we need to define the word believe, Belief can mean many things. It can mean intellectual assent to something. This has little or no effect on one s life. For example, Adolf Eichmann, who was hanged some years ago for crimes too gruesome to imagine, declared that he believed in God. St. James writes that even the devils believe in existence of God. Yet their belief is intellectual assent. It has no effect on their lives. Even though they believe, they continue to act like devils. When we say I believe in the Nicene Creed we mean more than intellectual assent. We mean commitment. This is why the word believe is followed by the preposition in. I believe in one God There is a vast difference between someone who says, I believe you and someone who says, I believe in you. the latter expresses deep trust. The creed expresses not only facts about God but also trust and commitment to Him. I believe in God is a strong expression of faith. It is not like saying, I suppose there is a God, I think, I surmise, I am inclined to the opinion that in all probability there may be a God. I believe in means commitment. It means the wagering of one s life not merely the nodding of one s head. It means decision not just discussion. It means, I bet my life, my whole existence on the fact of God and I yield my life to Him. I promise to obey and follow Him in all that I do. If we do not mean this when we say the Creed, then perhaps we should be honest and not say it at all. Church Fathers Speak I do not pray any longer not to sin, but for thirty years I have been repeating, Lord Jesus, shield me from my tongue. yet despite this my tongue trips me up every day, and I commit sin because of it. Sayings of the Desert Fathers From Daily Vitamins for Spiritual Growth by Anthony M. Coniaris PARISH COUNCIL MEETING UPDATE The following items of note resulted from business discussed at the September 10, 2018 Parish Council meeting: George Bambalis presented need to complete retaining wall at rear, lower corner of Hellenic Center. Board approved work to be completed per estimates gathered by Mike Vlasis. Work includes: Installing retaining wall blocks at back drive between existing retaining wall to concrete retaining wall where food trailer is parked during festival. Digging bank out, installing blocks, backfill behind wall with gravel for drainage. Estimated cost to be $4400. By-Law Changes were approved to have 14 members on Parish Council instead of 12. Parish will elect 8 new members at next election to join 6 members who will continue to serve. After the first year, one member will rotate off after only one year of service. In following years, parish will elect 7 new members each year; with 7 members rotating out of service. This By-Law change will be taken to Special General Assembly for approval. Assessment to Archdiocese will be $58,600 as compared to $57.200 last year. Nominating Committee was formed with George Bambalis as chair & Pete Bobotsiares, Paula Christakos & Maria Tsigas as members. Dr. Mike Olympio will hold CPR & AED training October 15 at 7 pm. George Stabolitis presented a flooring vendor, Floor Action for new Pavilion Floor. Owner is out of Kernersville & has attended our Festival for many years. They did the floor at Greensboro Day School, which our group has visited. Board approved taking the proposal to Special General Assembly for approval. Cost is $55,000 for 6 mm rubber floor with 2 mm scratch protection & top coat of color. Also included is striping for volleyball & basketball lines. Additional report from Mike Vlasis. Tom Westmoreland proposed to lay fabric and 6 recycled asphalt to cover soccer field. He will lay a mesh lining & this crushed asphalt. This project addresses the ongoing wash out concerns with the soccer field as we rely heavily on this for festival parking. Estimate is $45,000. Board approved taking this proposal to Special General Assembly for approval. Special General Assembly will be held Sunday October 21 after Liturgy to address three items: 1. By Law change 2. Pavilion Floor project, to be done after Festival 2019 prior to Labor Day 2019 3. Soccer Field Asphalt, to be done prior to Festival 2019 Pete Bobotsiares raised concern about a recent serious injury by scalding of a restaurant owner & our desire to help him. Board approved giving $1,500 and allowing individuals to join in this gift for Evangelos Manginas. We can then share the total gifts with the family. To assist, please give contribution to the Parish Council and mark it Philanthropy. Sunday, October 7: Rita Georgoulias will present a historical unveiling that she has been hard at work to finish. It will be a part of permanent display in our breezeway authorized by the Parish Council in 2017.
