Such a figure is Saint Anthony the Great. Anthony was born in 261 AD. of Egyptian parents. At 20 years of age he lost his parents who left him a very large inheritance. Because Anthony had a calling to the monastic life, he decided to leave an amount of this for this younger sister and divide the remainder among the poor. He spent his whole life in the Egyptian deserts where he worked, prayed and had discussions with other saintly hermits. He was illiterate but by listening to others he was able to learn by heart pages of the Holy Bible. His fame reached as far as the Emperor Constantine the Great, who wrote to him asking for advice and blessings. Also in the desert he was visited by Basil the Great and Athanasios the Great. who kept with respect one of Anthony's robes. This great supporter of the Church and hero of the desert, died at the age of 105, and proved that an illiterate but holy person, can become a source of teaching and an example of the Christian way of life. At this time of the year, we are at a border: we have ended the cycle of Christmas, having prepared and fasted for the Nativity, having kept the feast of the Nativity, and subsequently that of Epiphany. We are, therefore, at the frontier, about to enter yet another cycle, namely that of the pre Lenten period. And Lent is precisely a time of intense integrity with ourselves in our life of hesitation and doubt. In today's Gospel account, we hear of the determination of Zacchaeus in his desire for salvation. This determination is characteristic of many personalities in the New Testament such as the blind man, the Canaanite woman, the centurion and others. Those who are saved and ~ealed are not necessarily the pious or even the "worlhy" but rather those who are persistent. "Ask and il shall be given unlo you; seek and ye shall find; knock, and il shall be opened unlo you" (Luke 11 :9). "The Kingdom 01 heaven suffereth violence, and Ihe violenllake il by lorce" (Matt. 11 : 12). Zacchaeus, too, shows no complacency in his cry with desire for salvation. He overcame natural obstacles such as the crowd and his own height. His desire to see Christ was far greater than his lear that people would see him as he was. Do we have this determination and urgent expectation? Do we seek salvation as Zacchaeus did? On the Last Day, Christ will turn to each of us and say "according 10 Ihe grealness 01 your lailh, may il be unlo you as you wish" (Matt. 15:28). The story of Zacchaeus rai ses another important issue. Christ comes to the house of this tax-collector, yet He does not come to see the "tax-collector" but Zacchaeus. It is for this reason that Christ calls Zacchaeus by name (v. 5). Jesus is showing us how all too ready we are to judge people and to place labels on them - whether political, religious or racial. The moment we suppose that we can define someone, we are in fact confining that person, whose heart is known only to God. Finally, although different people approach God in different ways - Zacchaeus is a very obvious example, but philosophers may approach God differently, mystics through meditation, scientists through nature, others through most personal ways - yet what is important for us to know is that it is Godwhocomes to us. We may climb various trees to reach or see Him, y~t it is He who calls out to us by name and says: "make hasle.., lor loday I musl abide allhy house" (v. 5). Are we ready to receive Christ? To all the faithful of the Church: grace, mercy and peace from the Saviour Christ born in the cave "Our God, who exists pre-eternally", was incarnated for us today. "A young child" was born unto us. "The Word became flesh, and dwelt among us" (John 1:14). And the mystery concealed from all ages has been revealed unto us. "A child Is born unto us, and a son Is given us, whose government Is upon his shoulders" (Is. 9:5). Such is, in brief, beloved children in the Lord, the depth of the mystery of the divine Incarnation; and such is the particular meaning of the great feast of the Holy Night of Christmas, the first of feasts. Basil the Great says of it that: "it is a common (east (or all creation... granting to the world the celestial... Let us, then, celebrate the salvation o( the world, the birth-day o( humanity. " This day is truly the birth-day of humanity, when the whole human race and with it has been dilivered the entire creation, which eversince participates in the divinely realised reconciliation and salvation, according to St. Paul: "For the earnest expectation o( the creation eagerly awaits the revealing o( the sons o( God" (Rom. 8:19), and now returns its own to God who is thus incarnated for us. "What shall we offer Thee, 0 Christ, who (or our sakes hast appeared on earth as man?" asks the sacred hymnographer of this night. And he answers: "The angels offer Thee a hymn; the heavens, a star; the Magi, gifts; the shepherds, their wonder; the earth, its cave; the wilderness, the manger; and we offer Thee a Virgin Mother". Such is our response to the gift from above. From us comes the flesh, the human nature, the entire human person in its entire multidimensional spiritual, psychosomatic and ethicosocial form and structure, through which it fully participates in the divine Mystery. We have no doubt at all, brothers and children, that the participation of humanity in the mystery of the Incarnation should be conceived so broadly. Likewise, however, we have no doubt that of all the forms of participation and attitudes of people before this mystery, the most interesting is that of the you t h, which for its greater part is favourably disposed to assume a position before the holy and exciting message of the Christmas night. Youth, this golden hope of the future of every institution and every society of people, and certainly also of the Church of Christ, has its own understanding 6 and its own way of approaching the mystery of the divine Incarnation. Young people today seek after the voice and call that comes from institutions and especially from the Church, so that they may participate more fully in the divine miracle of the Christmas night. And surely this is the meaning also of the decision of the United Nations which is to the point and which proclaimed the New Year as "Year o( the Youth" throughout the world. Hence also the dedication of our Patriarchal Message to the young people. We desire that it be considered as a realistic contribution towards the more general endeavour for open dialogue with the youth; as a paternal message to them: as a warm reminder of the responsibilities of society and of its institutions; and, finally, as a further indication of the attention, the understanding and the love shown towards our youth by the Ecumenical Throne and by us personally. First and foremost, on such a special occasion addressing the youth today we openly declare to them that more than ever before during this evening we listen with sympathy to the pulse of their hearts, and we recognise with satisfaction their invaluable spiritual powers and their vigorous convictions. At the same time, however, with pain of heart we follow also the size of their divers problematics, of their anxious searchings and of the frequently insurmountable difficulties of their life in the midst of the suppressed wider society. Indeed, never before have young people been so unbearably overloaded with so many problems and so many anxious conditions, and never before have they been so forcibly pushed towards ethicosocial disorders and extremities. Furthermore, never before have the powers of this world so persistently spread among the multitudes of young people their nets which distort consciences, so that today the predominant social perversions are the main characteristics of the so called "rebellious youth": drugs, abortions, unseemly behaviour, organised crime, social confrontations, revolutionary tendencies and similar sinful complexes. On the other hand, however, we must also confess that at the same time, with the exception of the considerable healthy section of young people, no other category of people today offers itself to whatever is good, supreme, noble and beautiful, with so rich sensitivity, with so many visions and tendencies, with so many J l

7 , noble elevations and pursuits, so much dynamism, faith, disposition and spontaneity. Deviation from the straight road creates the prerequisites for an evil life. On the contrary, persistence and faithfulness towards the sacred, holy and immortal institutional ideals, such as the motherland, the race, the family the school, the Church and all that accompanies the great and traditional principles and values of life; it is this persistence and faithfulness that guarantee the unhindered and safe way of young people for the conquest of supreme goals in life. If young people today feel insecure concerning their present and their future, and is they find it difficult - not to say impossible and full of obstacles - to tread the way of virtue and faith, and prove incompetent to learn and to experience the mystery of the divine Incarnation; and if there are many young people who remain unmoved from the calmness of this night and yield to the temptation to ignore the trumpet of the angels calling them to glorify God in the highest and to taste the promised peace on earth, preferring evil instead of good; then it is part of the greater responsibility of the main bearers of society, and the Churches of Christ are not exempt from this responsibility. The Churches are called to embrace young people with love and understanding, and to face their problems in relation to reality and with the right deontology. Young people often exaggerate in many respects, but not always without reason. We should not create the dangerous differentiation or even polarisation of youth into good and bad. Young people in their entirety are children of the One GOd. And in the Church of Christ, Who became a child for them, they must find, and surely will find, a warm maternal bosom, which will secure for them the certainty, the ease and above all the spiritual and moral strength. The harbour and shelter of the storm-tossed youth today is the Church and Christ Who works salvation in it and through it. Paternally addressing the youth throughout the world, beloved children in the Lord, and calling all interested people to a personal and collective responsibility, from this throne and in the midst of the sweetest Christmas night, we greet their Beatitudes the Leaders of the sister Orthodox Churches, the respected Leaders of the beloved churches, the Most Reverend Archpastors of the Throne, the reverend clergy and the pious People of God throughout the world, which form our Flock near and far; and we invoke upon all the grace and mercy of the Saviour Christ who became man for us. May the rich peace and blessing of Christ, who was born in the cave, be upon all of you, upon the entire world, and upon every race, origin and age of people of good faith and good will, and especially upon our beloved children, the young men and young women. MESSAGE of His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos on the occasion of the New Year Dear Brothers and Sisters, The change of the year always affords us the opportunity to make an assessment of life and a pre-evaluallon of hopes. We do not wish to talk in anticipation about fears and failures, although we know that they also may happen and with precisely the same possibilities. II has been well said, and in accordance with the laws of human nature, that "the present is the point of time which separates the time of disappointments from the time of hopes." Without any doubt, in such an evaluation the present is undervalued as time without colour and duration, without quality and decisive significance. But is, indeed, the present time simply a flowing and transitional state in our life? Orcould it be for us the most real and the most precious time? On the last night of December, when precisely at midnight, in a fraction of a second, the unique meeting - and at the same time the farewell - of the old with the new year takes place, the present dwindles to the least in duration and evaluation. For at that tragic moment, the time that passes automatically takes the epic dimensions of the past, while the time that is coming has not yet put away the mythical enchantment of the future. Pressed between these two "sacred monsters", our poor present orily just manages to survive, marking its presence in the form of a delicate and fragile line of demarcation. And yet, this present, which on the last night of the year runs the risk of being characterised as "no man's land", is our real "place of abode", on which depends the interpretation and assessment of the past, and on which the sparking of the future will also depend. If our present is nourished by constant principles and values, then we shall fearlessly judge the past and courageously confront the future. The present is the "Immediate" lime, that is the only time which objectively stands before us and demands the absolute vigilance and responsibility of our conscience. For this reason Christianity, too, does not convey the message of salvation in the future tense - as all kinds of Messianism do - but in the immediately present tense: "Behold, now Is the acceptable lime, now Is the day of salvallon" (II Cor. 6:2). "Blessed Is He who comes In the name of the Lord" (MatI. 21 :9). "The Kingdom of God Is within you" (Luke 17:21). This indivisible present lime of God is expressed even more concisely in the Revelation of SI. John, where God Himself introduces His unchangeable and timeless self with the following words: "I am He who Is, and who was, and who Is to come" (Revelation 1 :4). Noting from all the above the unrepeatable Significance of the presenttime, let us work in a spirit of vigilance ''whllelt Is day" (John 9:4). An as the year 1985 is internationally dedicated to the Youth, it is our duty to remember that the age 01 young people Is the Incarnate reminder 01 our greatest responsibilities and capabllllles In the Immediacy of the present. 8 MOMENTS IN THE DIVINE LITURGY Blessed is the Kingdom of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen. With these words the priest begins the Divine Liturgy of St John Chrysostom (as well as that of St Basil and of the Presanctified Gifts). As he does so, he takes the Gospel Book and with it makes the sign of the cross over the antimension. He then puts it back on the antimension, crosses himself, and kisses the Gospel Book and the Holy Altar. These solemn words and actions represent the glorification of the Redemption and the graceendowed heavenly reign of the Blessed Trinity. Even though the form of this blessing is very ancient (see also Mark 11-10), the ritual sign of the cross-the sign of Christ crucified and of our redemption - and the trinitarian formula exalt the fundamental dogmas of the Church of the New Testament. The blessing announces the ultimate goal of the movement which now begins, of the mystical "procession"which is now on its way. We have already left the earth with all its earthly cares, we are going up, following Christ in His eternal passage from this world to the Father. We bless the Kingdom of God brought to the world by Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and mystically reigning already in the faithful disciples of Christ by the presence and power of the Holy Spirit; it is eternal life in communion with God in loving obedience to his divine will - life in union with the Blessed Trinity. It is life which Christ has given to mankind by His incarnation, crucifixion, resurrection and glorification; life to be lived already in this world by the people of God. The solemn affirmation "Amen" is an affirmation that this Kingdom is indeed the "pearl of great price" for the faithful, which once having found it, they will love it and serve it and desire to have it forever (Luke 13:14). With the "Amen" we may also recall one of the prayers from the Office at the Consecration of the Church where we ask that it be filled with life everlasting, and that the Lord our God elect it for His dwelling place, and the abode of His glory. It has been said that outside the Church are the lower regions and the world of beings that live not according to reason and have no higher life, but inside, 'it is His place, He has all power and might and it is for us to come to him. The Church is thus the gathering of those to whom the ultimate destination of all life has been revealed and who have accepted it. Upon the acceptance in the solemn answer, "Amen", to the opening blessing the fate of the human race is decided. It reveals that the movement toward God has begun. J. v.d. H. PU"/Y", I' r,m. 4 '111 BELIEF IN THE HOLY TRINITY According to the teaching of the Holy Scripture and the faith of our Holy Orthodox Church, the one true God is triune, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This does not mean that there are three Gods, but one God in three persons. During the Epiphany, the Baptism of Jesus Christ, all three Persons of the Holy Trinity appeared together for the first time. The Father's voice testified from above that Jesus was His Son. The Son accepted His Father's testimony and the Holy Spirit was seen descending from the Father in the form of a dove and resting upon the Son. The Holy Trinity plays an important role in the life and worship of the Orthodox Christian. We make the sign of the cross with the thumb and first two fingers representing the Holy Trinity. We bring these three fingers together to signify that we believe not in three Gods but in One. We are baptized in the name of the Trinity. We are forgiven and we are married, in the name of the Trinity. Every liturgy begins with the name of the Trinity. We bless the name of the Trinity, and we are blessed in the name of the Trinity. Every Sunday we confess our faith in the Holy Trinity when we say in the Nicene Creed, "I believe in one God, the Father Almighty... and in one Lord Jesus Christ... and in the Holy Spirit." The three Persons of the Holy Trinity have the same opinion, make the same decision, and put forth the same energy and action. Butagain, each Person of the Holy Trinity has his very own particular and distinguishing mark. For example, to make it easier to understand, three men are one, because they are all human beings, but they are three persons, each being absolutely unique and different for the others. There are people who will say, 'The Trinity is too complicated for me. I want a simple God I can understand". Well, we shall never be able to understand God completely. This is the reason we cannot understand the Trinity. This is not to say however, that we cannot express the Trinity in a way that is easy to understand. The Trinity means that I believe in God the Father Who created me, God the Son Who saves me, and God the Holy Spirit Who lives in me. Our belief in the Trinity remains a mystery, but we should not be bewildered by this, because it is not that we cannot understand God at all, and after all the very purpose of the Holy Trinity is to help reveal God to us. We cannot explain how the seed draws from the soil the exactchemicals it needs to produce its own color, fragrance and fruit. This is but one of many mysteries in life that we do not understand, If we cannot understand these, then how can we expect to understand God fully and completely? The Holy Trinity says to us, not only how mysterious God is but also how accessible. The word "Person" was chosen to help us understand that each Person of the Trinity is Someone to Whom we can speak, of Whom we can make a request, Whom we can love and with Whom we can have a personal relationship. The Trinity then, is like the brilliant sun, impossible to gaze into, yet it illuminates our knowledge of God, as One Who is approachable and accessible through the Holy Spirit. The only way we Christians can express everything we mean by the word "God" is to say "Father, Son and Holy Spirit". J. P.

The theme of the Conference was the work and personality of St. Gregory Palamas. Among the speakers were Metropolitan Panteleimon of Thessaloniki, Metropolitan Panteleiman of Tyroloa, Metropolitan Anthimos of Alexandroupolis, Fr Athanasios Jevtic, Fr John Meyendorff and Professors G, Mantzaridis, G. Galitis and N. Matsoukas, Prof. Mantzaridis conducted the proceedings of the Conference which included theological, historical and archaeological papers, as well as celebrations in honour of the Saint. KOREA - After many and tiring efforts. the small Prayer-book (Mikron Euchologion) has recently been translated and published in the Korean language in an attempt to translate the liturgical texts of our Church. The Korean Orthodox faithful were able to follow the Paracletic Canon to the Virgin Mary throughout the fifteen days prior to the Dormition on the 15 August. HUNGARY - In September. 1984, a conference of theologians from both Eastern and Western countries in Europe was held in Budapest on the subject "Towards a theology of peace". Among other things, it was emphasised that "one cannot separate repentance of the heart from an effective action for the amelioration of conditions within which humans live throughout the world". WEST GERMANY - The future of Orthodox witness in the World Council of Churches was the centre of discussions at the first meeting of the Orthodox Advisory Group at Hildesheim. The Group is an Advisory body of the Commission of Mission and Evangelisation (W.C.C.) whose president is Bishop Anastasios (Yannoulatos), who is also responsible for the Orthodox mission in Kenya. The Commission met in plenary at Limuru (Kenya) between 13 to 20 January, 1985, and defined the programme of Orthodox activities. Dean of the Theological Faculty in Belgrade. at the invitation of His Eminence our Archbishop, delivered a lecture at the hall of Sf. Spyridon's Church. Kingsford. on Tuesday 8 January, 1985, on the theme "The spiritual life in the contemporary Orthodox Church of Serbia". The lecture was attended by His Eminence our Archbishop, His Eminence Metropo /itan Kosmas of Kampania and many of our Clergy and faithful. - After many months of preparation. the 5th Clergy-Laity Congress is being held in Brisbane between January, Our next issue will be entirely dedicated to this most significant event of our Archdiocese.
