6 l Thee is no doubt that these anthopomophisms ae absolutely valid and justified, fom the moment when we admit that God can eveal Himself to man in ' 11 ode to show him His will. Now, theefoe, the vey fact of Revelation is God's basic and majo anthopomophism. Fo othewise God Himself neithe speaks no J eveals' God is beyond eason and silence, beyond movement and position, o athe - as S. Ma-ximos J ~ ~""""'~"'''''''~.''''''''~~'''''... ~ ~'~~'~~'~~ * ~.~ '" ~9 ~~~!;e:.jhi.~)'<0~..9 '!.~-<::9'c0>~,!) (;'~;;;~1 The language, which the Old Testament uses to descibe God's vaious enegies, is theologically called "anthopomophic", as is known, aleady fom the beginning of ceation, because it pesents God acting as it He wee human. Thus God is descibed to decide ("and God said... ), to cetify cetain states ("and God saw... "), to pefom manual wok ("and God made man, taking eath fom the gound... ") to walk ("and they head the voice of the Lod God, who was walking in Paadise in the cool of the day... "). Othe desciptions pesent him as "being an opponent", "being angy", "being long-suffeing" o "epenting of his decision ". the Confesso wondefully said - God is the "stationay self-movement". Within the multitude of anthopomophisms, which the Sciptues use to denote in vaious ways God's boundless love fo man and fo the wold, thee is an absol utely unique, unhead of and scandalous anthopomophism. This is the case in which God appeas to "take an oath". This anthopomophism is scandalous, since usually it is the peson, whose tustwothiness and authoity is doubted, that takes an oath. And such is always a man in need, not God who has need of nothing. But let us hea such a desciption, especially as given in a chaacteistic chapte of the Epistle to the Hebews: "Fo when God made pomise to Abaham, because he could swea by no geate, he swoe by himself, saying, suely blessing will bless thee, and multiplying will multiply thee. And so, afte he had patiently endued, he obtained the pomise. Fo men veily swea by the geate: and an oath fo the confimation is to them an end of all stife. Wheein God, willing moe abundantly to show unto the heis of pomise the immutability of his counsel, confimed it by an oath: that by two immutable things, in which it was impossible fo God to lie, we might have a stong consolation, who have fled fo efuge to lay hold upon the hope set befoe us". (Hebews 6, 13-18). As we see in this passage, we ae given in bief a vey inteesting analysis of the phenomenon of the oath, a "phenomenology" of the oath, we might say. Within the famewok of this phenomenology, thee essential elements, chaacteising each case of oath, become clea: 1. The spiitual state, peceding the oath and defy ing it (uncetainty, doubt, disbelief, dispute). When God Takes An Oath 2. The point of efeence of the oath, which always of highe value than the peson who takes oath and constitutes in a cetain way the citeion of cedibility. 3. The expediency of the oath, which is to ceate climate of tustwothiness and cetainty. f we ignoe these th ee essential elements ae facitly implied in each case of oath, we will not able to undestand also the ultimate significance of fact that God Himself esoted to the point of taking oath fo man. All thee points togethe - but also element sepaately - bea witness to the unp dented humility of God, and at lease phenomenally God's decease, which does not at all agee with t notion of God as the highest being. But this dec<""'~ and humility is not caused simply by man's doubt disbelief. t is due moe to the fact that God Him,,,,. accepts, without objection, to be disputed by His tue. God accepts to suffe the humiliation of the in ode to hel p the Patiach Abaham to beli steadfastly that God's pomises will be kept oughly, and thus have "the stong consolation" be comfoted in the difficulties of life until such, ises ae fulfilled. At any ate, the entie damatic of the oath is concisely expessed by the wite of Epistle to the Hebews (S. Paul) in the following insping vese: "Since He had no one geate by to swea, He swoe by Himself". n this teibly apocaj yptic vese is best expessed God's boundless gloy which cannot have any efeence to any othe va l authoity outside of Himself - as well as God's "n.,p;{'j namely His humiliation (Kenosis), which nonethel must accept the disputation and the oath. Howeve, in the face of the "scandal" of taking an oath the believe is ashamed and full of because he cannot undestand such an inne and antinomy. t is not only the disputation of authoity that woulds him. At the same time a teme ous ethico-theological question toments him: How it possible that God expessly foqids man to path in the o ld and the New Testament, yet God Hi self sweas? This question wi ll find some athe factoy answe, if we pesent and analyse the two significant passages of the Bible that speak fo pohibition of oath. The fist passage is in the Old Testament paticulaly in the Ten Commandments of Moses: shall not take the name of the Lod God in vain" dus 20, 7). The second one is in the New TeSlanlefl Chist's homily on the Mount: Again you have that it was said by you fathes "you shall not but shall pefom you oaths to the Lod. But say you, do not swea at all; neithe by heaven, fo it ' God's thone; no by the eath, fo it is his fojtsto,)ij neithe by Jeusalem; fo it is the city of the geat neithe shall you swea by you head, because cannot make one hai white o black" (Mat. 5, JJ-J'" CHJ Goe him whe give goo, be e Pe~ chil' fully conf cons tay, most elati a mo Who most en (

Cetainly, he who is wholly good is necessaily the kind of peson who gives only good gifts". Faith in God, who is good and the only souce of goodness, is necessay fo ou paye, if we want it to be effective. f we place ou tust and confidence in the Peson of God, then ou loving Fathe will offe us, his childen, all that is fo ou benefit. Only God can be fully tusted: Theefoe we stiould always pay with the confidence that he will give us only what is good. Fom a compaison of these two passages, it follows fist that, while in the Old Testament the oath pe self is not pohibited altogethe, but only its abuse and misuse, namely taking a false oath and pejuy, in the New Testament the pohibition is absolute and unconditional. Fom the explanation given moe analytically in this passage of the New Testament, it becomes evident that sweaing is pohibited so that man may not be foced to commit false sweaing and pollute God's ceation, not even his own body, that does not belong to him. Theefoe, God who does not change, in sweaing by Himself does not violate no abolish the pefect ode of the law, which He makes. t is not possible that He will take back His wod, when He simply pomises o sweas, since in both these cases His unchanging essence is the unshakeable guaantee, as pecisely emphasised by the wite of the Epistle to the Hebews ("... that by two immutable things, in which it was impossible fo God to lie... "). Theefoe, in a deepe and final analysis, when God sweas, in His essence and by Himself, He is not minimised, since by sweaing to Himself He does not fall fom His feedom and dominion, but simply eminds His positive declaation: " am that am!" Of couse, this does not mean that, in elation to man and the wold, God's oath does not constitute humiliation (Kenosis) fo Him. On the contay, not only is it Kenosis, but it also consti tutes the most significant case of "anthopomophism" in the elations between the Ceato and the wold. t is the case of incompaable affection and intimation, simila to the one of the Mothe, who in sweaing to he child in a most intimate pesonal level - without being God Who has no highe tem of efeence - invokes he most infallible self and ponounces the popula moden Geek oath: "By the milk with wh ich fed y ou ". + A. S. CHAPTER 34 "Do not be ove-anxious and stain youself so as to gain an immediate heaing fo you equest. The Lod wishes to confe geate favous than those you ask fo, in ewad fo you peseveance in paying to him. Fo what geate thing is thee than to convese intimately with God and to be peoccupied with his company? Undistacted paye is the highest act of the intellect." The ultimate aim of paye is union with God and constitutes fo man the geatest blessing and a geate benefit than any petition, which he asks. God knows what ae the needs of each one of us and gives accodingly. Paye is indeed one of God's geatest gifts. CHAPTER 35 "Paye is an ascent of the spiit of God". Paye elevates us fom eath to heaven and unites us with God. This elevation and union with God is attained though ou concentation and attention on the peson of Jesus Chist. Chaple 36 - "Do you long to pay? Renounce all things. You then will become hei to all". Evey Chistian should know his pioities in life. To pay to God means to be in communion with God. n ode to achieve this communion, one must be libeated fom sin and slavoy to things that stand in one's own way to union with God. Fo "no man can seve two mastes: fo eithe he will hate the one, and love the othe; o else he will hold to the one, and despise the othe". (Mat. 6, 24) n paye one must dedicate the whole self to God, and enounce all things. n doing this, something stange happens. When one "enounces all", one "then will become hei to all". This happens in fulfilment of the Lod's pomise: "But seek ye fist the kingdom of God, _ and his ighteousness; and all these things shall be added to you". (Mat. 6, 33). Chaple 37 - "Fist of all pay to be puified fom you passions. Secondly, pay to be deliveed fom ignoance. Thidly, pay to be feed fom all temptation and abandonment. " Thee geat and impotant petitions ae mentioned in this chapte. Fist, puification fom passions. Evagius insists on this point of puification fom passions in all his witings. Feedom fom passions, he says, is the fist step fo any pogess in the way fo union with God. Only they that ae pue in heat shall,be able to see God, and they shall be called blessed. (Mat. 5, 8). The second petition efes to deliveance fom ignoance, which is the oof of many evils. Knowledge of the Tuth bings libeation and salvation. Chist is the Tuth and knowing Him means salvation. The thid petition spings fom the eal life in which we find ouselves and in which thee ae many temptations that entice us away fom God. Towads the end of the Lod's Paye we ask: "Lead us not into temptation, but delive us fom evil". Futhemoe, Evagius will have us pay that God may neve abandon us. Such abandonment means ou total destuction. n a simila petition towads the end of the Divine Litugy we pay: "Fosake us not, since we have ou hope in Thee." F M. C. 43 h
8 ~ The fouth Sunday of Lent is dedicated to the memoy o f St. John of the Ladde. Apat fom the Holy Bible and the books o f the Sevices, no Othodox book has bee n so well studied. and tanslated, as the "Ladde". n the Monasteies it is j ead in the Chuc h o in the Refectoy duing Lent. But it is a wok equally beloved to monks and lay people in.j the entie Othodox wold - in Geece, in Bulgaia, in Sebia, in Russia... Ou Chuch commemoates St. John not only on the 30th of Mach, the day of his feast, but by dedicating to him one of the Sundays in Lent, ecognising in his p eson the ascetical wite pe excellence and con. sideing him as an example fo us all. Why is this so?,~. St. John was bon aound the yea a few yeas afte the eection of the famous Chuch at the Monastey of Sinai - and died in the diddle of the 7th centuy. He went to Sina ealy in life and lived with his spiitual fathe, who fosued him as monk. Foty yeas late he was elected Abbot of the Monastey against his will. Fom that time, hewas beloved to all and known as a saint. t is said that some 600 pilgims visited the Monastey on the day of his induction as Abbot. What the Saint asks fom us is to acquie a pesonal expeience of God's love. We must ouselves taste the vaious vi tues and not si mply talk about them. He says somewhee : "Whoeve ties to explain God's love in wods and thinks that those who have not tasted it pesonally will undestand by his explanation, such peson is like him who wishes by examples and in wods to explain how sweet honey is to those who have neve tasted it". St. Jo hn does not popose any suggestions, no does he offe any moal exhotations. But like the Fathes of the Deset, he speaks pesonally, efeing to paticula cicumstances and diffic ulties. He descibes the vaious states of ou life, as he himse lf lived them. He finds each one of us pecisely whee we ae, in sin, in difficulty, in loneliness, in despai, in ou poblem. And each one of us silently and noiselessly will se ize what he seeks to find and will thus be led to a pesonal encounte with Chist. The Saint may wite hee andtheeina disodely manne about vitues and passions and yet all his witings ae hamoniously balanced he tells you eveything, but he leaves you fee to c hoose, to seek God's gace, so that you, too, may become balanced. He speaks in a simple manne about those mattes that appea difficult to us. He speaks in a tangible manne about the invisible Kingdom of Heaven. Yet he does not ceate dizziness, but bings about calmness. f he distubs you with his emaks, it is because he digs deeply in the heat of each one of us that has become, as he says, had and insensitive. And he softens it with his wods of gace, so that ou heat may become the thone of the Highest God, to contain Him who is uncontainable. Sometimes it huts you to ead him, but it also huts him as he suffes with you. Fo he, fist, shed teas fo his sins, in a spiit of soow that is full of joy (XaP!JoA un~) "At the end of ou life, he says, 44 St. John of Climax we will not be judged because we did not wok out miacles no because we wee not good theologians... Howeve, we shall cetainly give account to God fo not shedding teas of epentance continuously." St. john is full of fie and spaks of love fo God. To use his expession, he is in love with God. And tho ugh he is vey seve e, yet he does not fea using daing expess ions. He says somewhee: "Blessed is he who has such love fo God, like the peson who is madly in love with his beloved one". Yet it is had fo some one to be in love with God. You can't take out divo ce. You deceive Him, you fosake Him, yet you ae bound up with Him. You deset Him daily with you sins, yet He ecoves you in each Litugy as body and Blood. n this sp iitual maiage you must pesevee. o athe, you must love all the moe. "You cannot ascend the ladde with one step", he says. Thee ae many stages, but thee is no stop. Ou life is a dynamic jouney. "The end is endless", he wites. The way that leads to ou salvation is endless, yet we ae in diffeent and waste ou time in side lanes. AouS 8E; Mov( n E~o <pya 'OpE LEpj3 i!j ovo cam MEYo TOU T lova And as an Athonite monk used to say, ''iust as one xpov" bends down to each something he dopped, so slfnolvcl TaU L can one each out to God, in many ways evey n~ye Similaly the advice of the Saint is simple: "00 as <pope< good as you can, don't deceive anyone, don't E P~!JC anything, don't tell lies to anyone, don't EKAE~( anyone, don't hate anyone. Don't ommit to go <mo T Chuch sevices, show compassion to the poo". KonoL He speaks about fasting, paye, obedience, T~V ~~ humility, confession, silence, simplicity, h A disinteest fo money. We must imitate Chist, he n poolj t is not easy, he knows it. "Toil", he says, "eal YEu80 and much unseen bitteness await us. But let us un t V ' al' good fight with joy and with fea of God". We will fall, va 61t) OWOE he knows it. He is a ealist. He wites: "The angels not fall. But it is chaacteistic of human beings to fall, but also to ise up. when they fall". Fo this eason he says, " let the sinnes be encou aged, if they ae humble." He stesses that we need be patient, til l we ae enkindled with the divine flame. The Saint stikes had on ou se lf-suffici when we feel we ae petty good and thee is no need become "holy". On this account he exposes au hypocisy and fal so vitue. The Lod, he says, comles.l without invitation, when He sees th e time if fit, n when we.have dispensed with cetain of ou eli duties. So the Saint commands ConfeSSion - we deceived if we think that we will be saved alonepaye: "Cy out loudly, he says to Him, who C;;Jn you." At the end of his book he says: "Ascend, as,ce,m. my bothes, un eagely upwad togethe Chist"... The Ladde of St. John is pecisely an invitation us to ascend the ladde that leads tei Chjst. And sin this equies effo t, love and patience, it is theefoe invitation to ascend fom today, fom this moment, Coss of Chist, so that we may ise with Him. J. 1:1, npotp4 ' AAAQ
