Χαρά στους που ʹναι οι Δυνατοί γιʹ αυτούς δεν έχει χόρταση. 7 ΤΙ ΝΑ ΣΑΣ ΠΩ ΓΥΝΑΙΚΕΣ Τι να σας πω γυναίκες τι να μη σας πω παρηγοριά κι αλήθεια που να μην ντραπώ Μόνο να σας ακούω πότε θλίβομαι πιάνω τα σκοτεινά στα νέφη κρύβομαι Πότε μα το Θεό περηφανεύομαι βάζω τα κόκκινα μου και πορεύομαι Τυραγνίες ζηλοφθονίες φόνους παιδεμούς τʹ αλέθω για τους χρόνους τους μελλούμενους Τʹ αλέθω τα γυρίζω και τα πάω στη γη που ʹδωσε το σκοτάδι φως για να το πιει ΘΕΛΩ ΚΑΡΑΒΙΑ ΣΠΡΩΧΝΩ Θέλω καράβια σπρώχνω θέλω σταματώ Τα δυο βουνά χωρίζω και τα περπατώ Σʹ όλους το παραγγέλνω σʹ όλους το μηνώ Τρώγεται ο νους του ανθρώπου μόνο αλίμονο. Μα ο που τους πήρε κι ήμπε μες στα αίματα Μήτε Θεός μήτʹ άλλος δεν τον σταματά Σ ΕΥΛΟΓΗΜΕΝΗ ΜΕΡΑ Σʹ ευλογημένη μέρα βγάζει το κακό σε δημοσιά πλατιά το στενοσόκακο Σʹ όλα τα σπίτια σʹ όλα τα παράθυρα δάφνες και κουμαριές και φοινικόκλαρα Σʹ ένα μακρύ τραπέζι κόκκινο κρασί νέοι και γέροι κι άντρες ξεμανίκωτοι Πάρτε μεράκι φλόγα λόγο μάλαμα πάρτε μικρό λαγούτο πάρτε μπαγλαμά O ROADS WELL WORN AND TRODDEN Ο roads well worn and trodden, Ο roads not worn at all who has traversed their length, who has not passed at all? Poor miserable creations, youʹve been filled with lies all the worldʹs crazy fools have now been mobilized! But those who took these roads and waded deep in blood not God or man can stop them in their fortitude. THE BLESSED DAY Evil itself does bring to birth the blessed day and every narrow lane must lead to the broad highway by all the windows of every room in every house strawberry trees and laurel leaves and palm tree boughs their sleeves rolled up around a table with red wine youngsters and oldsters and grown men sit down and dine. 9 ΤΟ ΤΡΕΛΟΒΑΠΟΡΟ Βαπόρι στολισμένο βγαίνει στα βουνά κι αρχίζει τις μανούβρες «βίρα μάινα» Την άγκυρα φουντάρει στις κουκουναριές φορτώνει φρέσκο αέρα κι απʹ τις δυο μεριές Είναι από μαύρη πέτρα κι είναι απʹ όνειρο κι έχει λοστρόμο αθώο ναύτη πονηρό Από τα βάθη φτάνει τους παλιούς καιρούς βάσανα ξεφορτώνει κι αναστεναγμούς Έλα Χριστέ και Κύριε λέω κι απορώ τέτοιο τρελό βαπόρι τρελοβάπορο Χρόνους μας ταξιδεύει δε βουλιάξαμε χίλιους καπεταναίους τους αλλάξαμε Κατακλυσμούς ποτέ δε λογαριάσαμε μπήκαμε μες στα όλα και περάσαμε Κι έχουμε στο κατάρτι μας βιγλάτορα παντοτινό τον Ήλιο τον Ηλιάτορα! THE CRAZY BOAT A boat adorned and decked sails out for mountains oh and there begins maneuvers with heave to, heave ho weighs anchor by a pine tree grove and takes aboard a cargo of fresh mountain air at lee and port. Sheʹs made of blackest stone, sheʹs made of flimsy dream her boatswain is naive, her sailors plot and scheme sheʹs come from the deep depths of ancient bygone times and here unloads her troubles and her trembling sighs. Ο come my Lord and Jesus, I speak and am struck daft on such a loony vessel on such a crazy craft weʹve sailed for years on end, and still weʹve kept afloat weʹve changed a thousand skippers on this balmy boat we never paid the slightest heed to cataclysms but plunged headlong in everything with optimisms and high up on our lookout mast we keep for sentry one who ever and anon remains our Sun our Sovereign Sun! 8

10 THE SOVEREIGN SUN The nursery rhyme from which Elytis took the opening and meter for The Sovereign Sun begins thus: Ο ήλιος ο ήλιατορας Ο παιτροπαιχνιδιάτορας ηλιάτορας and πετροπαιχνιδιάτορας; are words such as children invent and play with. The first is a combination of the word for sun, ήλιος, and a suffix, άτοραςs, as in αυτοκράτορας, meaning emperor. The second word is a combination of stone play atoras. A literal translation of the nursery rhyme would be: The sun, the emperor sun the champion stone player holds a knife and a sword and goes to Petrosʹ courtyard and says: ʺO Maria, Ο Sophia, where are Petrosʹ children?ʺ ʺI washed and combed their hair then sent them off to school.ʺ ʺWhat have you done with their shorn hair?ʺ ʺI hung it on an olive tree.ʺ ʹ And where is this olive tree?ʺ ʺFire burnt it down.ʺ ʺAnd where is this fire?ʺ ʺWater put it out.ʺ ʺAnd where is that water?ʺ ʺThe calf drank it up.ʺ ʺAnd where is that calf?ʺ ʺDown by Saint Nicholas Where it keeps company with a red fez.
