Ben Sira 51:23 (MS B): Turn aside to me, you untutored, and lodge in my house of study. 2. 1QS (Community Rule) : פנו אלי סכלים ולינו בבית מדרשי ובהיות אלה ליחד בישראל בתכונים האלה יבדלו מתוך מושב (הנשי) [אנשי] העול ללכת למדבר לפנות שם את דרך הואהא כאשר כתוב במדבר פנו דרך **** ישרו בערבה מסלה לאלוהינו היאה מדרש התורה א[ש]ר צוה ביד מושה לעשות ככול הנגלה עת בעת וכאשר גלו הנביאים ברוח קודשו And when these become members of the Community in Israel according to all these rules, they shall separate from the habitation of unjust men and shall go into the wilderness to prepare there the way of Him; as it is written, Prepare in the wilderness the way of...., make straight in the desert a path for our God (Isa. 40:3). This (path) is the study of the Law (midrash ha-torah) which he commanded by the hand of Moses, that they may do according to all that has been revealed from age to age, and as the Prophets have revealed by His Holy Spirit. For each of the ten pronouncements separately and all in common incite and exhort us to wisdom and justice and godliness and the rest of the company of virtues, with good thoughts and intentions combining wholesome words, and with words actions of true worth, that so the soul with every part of its being attuned may be an instrument making harmonious music so that life becomes a melody and a concent in which there is no faulty note. 135 Of the queen of the virtues, piety or holiness, we have spoken earlier and also of wisdom and temperance. Our theme must now be she whose ways are close akin to them, that is justice. 5. All is here written as he left it: nothing have we added for the sake of embellishment, nothing which has not been bequesthed by Moses. 197 Our one innovation has been to classify the several subjexts; for he left what he wrote in a scattered condition, just as he received each several instruction from God. I have thought it necessary to make this preliminary observation, lest perchance any of my countrymen who read this work should reproach me at all for having gone astray. 198 Here then is the code of those laws of ours which touch our political contsitution. As for those which he has left us in common concerning our mutual relations, there I have reserved for that treatise on Customs and Causes, which Gold helping, it is our intention to compose after the present work.

Goldin, 90): וכנגדן היה רבי יהודה הנשיא מונה שבחן של חכמים..... לרבי עקיבא קרא לו אוצר בלום. למה רבי עקיבא דומה? לפועל שנטל קופתו ויצא לחוץ. מצא חטים מניח בה מצא שעורים מניח בה כוסמין מניח בה עדשים מניח בה כיון. שנכנס לביתו מברר חטים בפני עצמן שעורים בפני עצמן פולין בפני עצמן עדשים בפני עצמן. כך עשה ר' עקיבא ועשה כל התורה טבעות טבעות. In like manner Rabbbi Judah the Prince used to list the excellences of the Sages:.... Rabbi Akiḅa he called A well-stocked storehouse. To what might Rabbi Akiḅa be likened? To a laborer who took his basket and went forth. When he found wheat, he put some in the basket; when he found barley, he put that in; spelt, he put that in; lentils, he put them in. Upon returning home he sorted out the wheat by itself, the barley by itself, the beans by themselves, the lentils by themselves. This is how Rabbi Akiḅa acted, and he arranged the whole Torah in rings. 7. Mekhilta de-rabbi Ishmael, par. Baḥodesh 5, to Exodus 20:2 (ed. Horovitz-Rabin, 222): [1] אשר הוצאתיך מארץ מצרים מבית עבדים. עבדים למלכים היו, אתה אומר עבדים למלכים היו, או [אינו אלא] עבדים לעבדים היו. כשהוא אומר ויפדך מבית עבדים מיד פרעה מלך מצרים, הוי עבדים למלכים היו ולא עבדים לעבדים. - [2] דבר אחר מבית עבדים, מבית העובדים, שהיו עובדים לעבודה זרה. [1] Who brought you out of the Land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage (beit avadim) (Exodus 20:2): They were servants to kings. You say that they were servants to kings. Perhaps it is not so, but means that they were servants to servants? When it says, And redeemed you out of the house of bondage, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt (Deuteronomy 7:8) aha! It indicates that they were servants to kings and not servants to servants. [2]Another interpretation of Out of the house bondage : Out of the house of worshipers, for they were worshipers of idols. 8. Fraade, Early Rabbinic Midrash Between Philo and Qumran: Texts 4 [14] If, after you have entered the land that the Lord your God has assigned to you, and taken possession of it and settled in it, you decide, I will set a king over me, as do all the nations about me, [15] you shall be free to set a king over yourself, one chosen by the Lord your God. Be sure to set as king over yourself one of your own people; you must not set a foreigner over you, one who is not your kinsman. [16] Moreover, he shall not keep many horses or send people back to Egypt to add to his horses, since the Lord has warned you, You must not go back that way again. [17]] And he shall not have many wives, lest his heart go astray; nor shall he amass silver and gold to excess. [18] When he is seated on his royal throne, he shall have a copy of this Teaching written for him on a scroll by the levitical priests. [19] Let it remain with him and let him read in it all his life, so that he may learn to revere the Lord his God, to observe faithfully every word of this Teaching as well as these laws. [20] Thus he will not act haughtily toward his fellows or deviate from the Instruction to the right or to the left, to the end that he and his descendants may reign long in the midst of Israel. Hammer): פיסקא קנז (יד) כי תבוא אל הארץ, עשה מצוה האמורה בענין שבשכרה תיכנס לארץ. אשר ה' אלהיך נותן לך, בזכותך. וירשתה וישבתה בה, בשכר שתירש תשב. ואמרת אשימה עלי מלך, רבי נהוריי אומר הרי זה דבר גניי לישראל שנאמר (שמואל א' ח,ז) כי לא אותך מאסו כי אותי מאסו ממלוך עליהם אמר רבי יהודה והלא מצוה מן התורה לשאול להם מלך שנאמר שום תשים עליך מלך, למה נענשו

Fraade, Early Rabbinic Midrash Between Philo and Qumran: Texts 5 בימי שמואל לפי שהקדימו על ידם. ככל הגוים אשר סביבותי, רבי נהוריי אומר לא בקשו להם מלך אלא להעבידם עבודה זרה שנאמר (שמואל א' ח,כ) והיינו גם אנחנו ככל הגוים ושפטנו מלכנו ויצא לפנינו ונלחם את מלחמתינו סליק פיסקא פיסקא קנז (טו) שום תשים, מת מנה אחר תחתיו. מלך, ולא מלכה. אשר יבחר ה' אלהיך בו, על פי נביא. מקרב, ולא מחוצה לארץ. אחיך, ולא מאחרים. תשים עליך מלך, והלא כבר נאמר שום תשים עליך מלך ומה תלמוד לומר תשים עליך מלך שתהא אימתו עליך, מיכן אמרו מלך אין רוכבים על סוסו ואין יושבים על כסאו ואין משתמשים בשרביטו ואין רואים אותו ערום ולא כשהוא מסתפר ולא בבית המרחץ. דבר אחר שום תשים עליך מלך, מצות עשה. לא תוכל לתת עליך איש נכרי, מצות לא תעשה. איש נכרי, מיכן אמרו האיש ממנים פרנס על הציבור ואין ממנים האשה פרנסת על הצבור. אשר לא אחיך הוא, כשהיה אגריפס מגיע לפסוק זה היה בוכה והיו כל ישראל אומרים לו אל תירא אגריפס אחינו אתה אחינו אתה סליק פיסקא 156: When thou art come unto the land perform the commandment which is prescribed in this matter, and as a reward for it you will enter the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee because of your merit and shalt possess it, and shalt dwell therein (17:14) as a reward for possessing it, you shall dwell in it. And shalt say: I will set a king over me (17:14): R. Nehorai says: This is in disparagement of Israel, as it is said, For they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected Me, that I should not be king over them (1 Sam. 8:7). R. Judah said: But is it not a positive commandment in the Torah itself that they should demand a king for themselves, as it is said, Thou shalt in any wise set him king over thee (17: I 5)? Why then were they punished for doing so in the days of Samuel? Because they initiated it prematurely on their own. Like all the nations that are round about me ( 17:14): R. Nehorai says: They demanded a king only so that he might lead them into idolatry, as it is said, That we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles (1 Sam. 8:20). 157: Thou shall in any wise set if he dies, appoint another in his place a king but not a queen whom the Lord thy God shall choose through the word of a prophet one from among and not from outside the (Holy) Land thy brethren and not from among Gentiles shall thou set a king over thee (17:15): Having already said, Thou shall in any wise set a king over thee, why does the verse say again shall thou set a king over thee? In order that fear of him should be upon you. Hence the Sages have said: As for a king, one may not ride his horse, nor sit upon his throne, nor use his scepter, nor view him when he is naked, is being barbered, or is in the bathhouse. Another interpretation: Thou shall in any wise set a king over thee this is a positive commandment thou mayest not put a foreigner over thee (17:5) this is a negative

Who is not thy brother (17:15): Whenever Agrippa came to this verse, he wept, and all the people of Israel said to him, Fear not, Agrippa, you are our brother, you are our brother.
