3 Astract A Lea alls Ater, or orchestra y Lily Chen Doctor o hilosohy in Music University o Caliornia, Berkeley roessor Ken Ueno, Chair A Lea alls Ater is insired y my recent memories o living in Euroe In the all o 201, I received the Ladd rize unded y UC Berkeley and had the great oortunity to live in aris or ten months This as my irst time in aris as ell as in Euroe; I exerienced intimate incidents o ragile eauty that touched me, ut also shocking and terriying ones during my residence there I as imressed y the most clear and colorul all I d ever seen hen autumn leaves ell to the ground, sizzling as i drizzling; I as terriied y the terrorist attack ut also touched y the toughness o the arisians that inter; on a visit to t aul s Cathedral in London, I as ascinated to hear telve ells constantly ringing, intertining together as a huge chaotic ut illusory hirl; I as stunned hen visiting the installation allen Leaves at the eish Museum in Berlin, atching thousands o oen mouthed steel metal aces on the ground create, hen alked on, harshly grating sounds like the victims screams Insired y mixed emotions and diverse sounds, this iece traces the ourney o a lea: a solitary lea alling ith loneliness as descried in an e e cumming s oem; a light lea alling ith other leaves in autumn; a heavy metal lea allen on the ground Hoever, no matter hat virations it has undergone during its alling and allen time, the lea ill eventually e reincarnated into a rising utterly, laing its ings to cause a tornado in sring until the next alling comes Based on such images, I created a constantly loing rocess o dierent kinds o virations along ith air sounds to reresent alling leaves, allen leaves, and las o rising utterlies ings Besides this, metallic sounds/noises either ith ure resonances or ith intense ressure make u another imortant element, hich is associated ith my memories o the ringing ells and the metal allen leaves tructurally, there are three large uninterruted sections ith an introduction and a coda, exressing several dierent scenarios in sequence: a lea alls (Intro), alling leaves (ection 1), ringing chaos (ection 2), rising utterlies (ection ), and a lea alls ater (coda) In the intro (a lea alls), an image o a huge lea shaed y multile linear gestures gently emerges rom ehind the air sounds ut then alls arutly and heavily ith metallic noises ection 1 (alling leaves) reveals a alling/descending rocess, starting rom itchless noises and air sounds, gradually accumulating more and more, clearer and clearer descending gestures, and then inished y an very intense dark grating hrase, hich is a metahor o the metal allen leaves ection 2 (ringing chaos) is a long transition eteen the revious and the olloing section as ell as rom urity to chaos, ased on the constant elllike sounds o chimes as drone and used ith other comlex sounds and resonances to shae a chaotic dizzy atmoshere As an inverted image o alling leaves, ection (rising utterlies) mainly ocuses on ascending gestures ith virations and right timre scattering and echoing in dierent arts to dra a icture o the ing lutters o rising utterlies and the luctuations o the utterly eect In the coda (a lea alls ater), the gaslike reath sounds are not ust a kind o struggle in a ading decay, ut also a hint o reirth recalling the eginning gestures: the alling lea turns over a ne lea in the cycle o transmigration A Lea alls Ater as remiered y National Taian ymhony Orchestra in Taichung, Taian on August 17th,
