3 ΑΠΡΗΛIΟ - ΗΟΤΝΗΟ 2018 «ΣΟ ΒΔΛΟΤΥΗ» 3 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Dear Fellow Evrytanians and Friends, During our last Boarδ meeting in Washington DC, the chapter President, Sotirios Nasios, gave an amazing welcome to the Board of Trustees, with a Saturday night welcoming dinner and an incredible Luncheon after Church, before we settled down to the business meeting, allowing Mr. Nasios to present the report for the upcoming 74th Convention followed by our regular business meeting. And what an incredible Convention they presented! Mr. Nasios along with his many-member Committee did a fantastic job! They broke recent records of attendance at the Banquet with over a 300-plus member turnout! We were thrilled to hear his Excellency Ambassador Haris Lalakos address the Banquet and, of course, the Keynote Speaker, Senator John Sarbanes. The Youth Dance was a joyful success as well as the very enjoyable Daughters of Evrytania tours around Washington DC. The Scholarship Committee, which had graded the scholarship awards, presented the results for the 13 recipients, who had of course applied several months ahead. The scholarships this year were close to $30,000. The Convention was honored to have as a first-time guest His Eminence, Metropolitan Georgios of Karpenisi, as well as his Vicar General, Fr. Ilarionos, along with Fr. Georgios of the "Agion Evrytanon" Church in Karpenisi. Mr. Aristides Tasios, the Antiperiferiarhis, the two Mayors of Evrytania, Nikos Souliotis of Karpenisi and Theodoros Bambalis of Agrafa, all addressed us during the business meetings of the many needs of Evrytania, their various programs and expressed their gratitude for the Association's help with Children with Special Needs, the Scholarship Programs, our support of the food pantry, and help to families requesting support in their needs. Karpenisi's Sister City, Asheville, entertained 7 people on an exchange program. Under the guidance of Leonidas Papadopoulos, the 5 students and 2 advisors, visited Charlotte for 3 days, then Asheville for 5 days, Washington during the Convention for 3 days, and finally New York for 3 days. They were hosted by 4-5 generous donors for their travel expenses. The General Assembly was moved by our Evrytanian pride, to empower a young man, Yiannis Antoniou, in his Olympics Skiing endeavors, by offering to help out with his extreme expenses, and to participate in the cost of the annual Markos Botsaris 2-day Festival which is such a moving and delightful occasion in which the whole of Karpenisi and many, many towns from other provinces parade and participate. During the Sunday picnic where all were offered an impressive and abundant variety of foods, all the members enjoyed a relaxing time, and later the successful raffle winners were drawn. Later on in the year, look for information about our 75th Anniversary Convention, being held next year, 2019, in Charlotte NC. Please try not plan weddings or other Community Events on the weekend of June 6-8, A big thank you to all who prepared, all who attended, and may all of you be blessed with a healthy and safe summer. 4 APRIL - JUNE 2018 «VELOUCHI» 4 ΜΖΝΤΜΑ ΠΡΟΔΓΡΟΤ Αγαπεηνί Δπξπηάλεο Καηά ηε δηάξθεηα ηεο 4 εο θαη ηειεπηαίαο ζπλεδξίαζεο ηνπ Γ καο γηα ην ζηελ Οπάζηγθηνλ, ν Πξόεδξνο, ηνπ Σκήκαηνο σηήξηνο Νάζηνο κε ηδηαίηεξε ραξά καο θαισζόξηζε πξνζθέξνληάο καο έλα ζαπκάζην βξαδηλό δείπλν ην άββαην θη έλα απίζηεπην γεύκα ηελ Κπξηαθή κεηά ηελ Δθθιεζία θαη πξηλ μεθηλήζνπκε ηε ζπλεδξίαζή καο θαηά ηε δηάξθεηα ηεο νπνίαο ν θ. Νάζηνο θαη ηα ηαιαληνύρα κέιε ηεο Οξγαλσηηθήο Δπηηξνπήο ηνπ είραλ ηελ επθαηξία λα παξνπζηάζνπλ ηελ πνιιά ππνζρόκελε έθζεζή ηνπο γηα ην 74 ν Δζληθό πλέδξην ηεο Έλσζεο. Σν 74 ν πλέδξην ηνπ Βεινπρηνύ ζηελ Οπάζηγθηνλ απνηέιεζε κηα θαηαπιεθηηθή επηηπρία. Έζπαζε ην ξεθόξ ζπκκεηνρήο κειώλ θαη θίισλ καο ζην επίζεκν δείπλν ηνπ αββάηνπ κε πάλσ από 300 άηνκα! Δλζνπζηαζηήθακε κε ηνλ ραηξεηηζκό ηνπ εμνρόηαηνπ Πξέζβε ηεο Διιάδαο ζηελ Ακεξηθή, θ. Θενράξε Λαιάθνπ, θαη θπζηθά κε ηελ γιαθπξόηαηε νκηιία ηνπ θεληξηθνύ νκηιηηή, ηνπ γεξνπζηαζηή θ. Ησάλλε αξκπάλε. Ο ρνξόο πνπ δηνξγάλσζε ε Νενιαία καο ζηέθζεθε από επηηπρία, ε δε Γεληθή πλέιεπζε ησλ Θπγαηέξσλ Δπξπηαλίαο ην επίζεκν γεύκα θαη ε πξνγξακκαηηζκέλε νκαδηθή πεξηήγεζή ηνπο ζηα πην δεκνθηιή θαη αμηνζέαηα κλεκεία ηεο Οπάζηγθηνλ ζα κείλνπλ αμέραζηεο. Ζ Δπηηξνπή Τπνηξνθηώλ ηεο Έλσζεο αλαγλώξηζε θαη απέλεηκε ζε 13 Δπξπηάλεο ηελ θαηαγσγή θνηηεηέο ππνηξνθίεο πνπ ην ζπλνιηθό ηνπο ρξεκαηηθό έθηαζε θέηνο ηηο $30,000 πεξίπνπ. Σα κέιε ηεο Δλώζεώο καο είραλ ηελ ηδηαίηεξε ραξά θαη ηηκή θέηνο λα ππνδερηνύλ γηα πξώηε θνξά ηνλ εβαζκηώηαην Μεηξνπνιίηε Καξπελεζίνπ Γεώξγην, ηνλ Γεληθό Αξρηεξαηηθό Δπξπηαλίαο π. Ηιαξίσλα Ληάζθν θαη ηνλ εθεκέξην ηνπ Ηεξνύ Νανύ Δπξπηάλσλ Αγίσλ π. Γεώξγην Υξπζαθνγεώξγν. Μαο ηίκεζαλ επίζεο κε ηελ παξνπζία ηνπο ν Αληηπεξηθεξεηάξρεο Δπξπηαλίαο θ. Αξηζηείδεο Σαζηόο, νη Γήκαξρνη Καξπελεζίνπ θαη Αγξάθσλ, θ.θ., Νίθνο νπιηώηεο θαη Θεόδσξνο Μπακπαιήο, νη νπνίνη καο ελεκέξσζαλ γηα ηα πνιηηηζηηθά δξώκελα θαη ηα αμηόινγα έξγα ππνδνκώλ πνπ επηηεινύληαη ζηελ Δπξπηαλία. Γελ παξέιεηςαλ δε λα αλαθεξζνύλ ζηηο αλάγθεο πνπ έρεη ε γελέηεηξα Δπξπηαλία θαη ζηα ηξέρνληα πξνβιήκαηα πνπ αληηκεησπίδεη θαη λα εθθξάζνπλ ηελ επγλσκνζύλε ηνπο γηα ηηο δηάθνξεο κνξθέο νηθνλνκηθήο βνήζεηαο πνπ παξέρεη ε Έλσζε γηα ηελ ελίζρπζε θαη ζηήξημε ησλ παηδηώλ κε εηδηθέο αλάγθεο θαη εππαζώλ νηθνγελεηώλ, ησλ αθαδεκατθώλ ππνηξνθηώλ θαη ησλ παληνπσιείσλ θνηλσληθήο αιιειεγγύεο, Σν Άζβηι ηεο Β. Καξνιίλαο, αδειθή πόιε ηνπ Καξπελεζίνπ, ζην πιαίζην ηνπ πξνγξάκκαηνο αληαιιαγήο ησλ δπν πόιεσλ, δέρζεθε θαη θηινμέλεζε πξηλ θαη θαηά ηε δηάξθεηα ηνπ πλεδξίνπ 7 λένπο θαη λέεο από ηελ Δπξπηαλία. Τπό ηελ θαζνδήγεζε ηνπ Λεσλίδα Παπαδόπνπινπ, νη 5 λένη θαη νη 2 ζπλνδνί/ζύκβνπινη επηζθέθζεθαλ ηε άξινη γηα 3 εκέξεο, ζηε ζπλέρεηα ην Άζβηι γηα 5 εκέξεο, ηελ Οπάζηλγθηνλ θαηά ηε δηάξθεηα ηεο πλέιεπζεο γηα 3 εκέξεο θαη ηέινο ηε Νέα Τόξθε γηα 3 εκέξεο. We took my niece with us and again, it was wonderful to see the excitement of someone seeing things like the Parthenon for the first time. We rented a car and drove to Costa Navarino. This resort is first class in every way and has been built to be ecologically sustainable. This resort was developed by, and is run by Greeks. It s an excellent example of the determination and vision of Greek people. We in the Daughters believe that if we continue to support the youth of Evrytania there can be even more wonderful economic development in the country for years to come. I wish all of you a wonderful summer and we will get back to work in the fall! I am grateful for your support, Joy Dascalakis For Sale Family House in Karpenissi Evrytania Dear Evrytanians, Iam writing this after a very busy 2 weeks. First, was our wonderful convention in Washington. I am so grateful to the Washington chapter for all their hard work in planning the events. I don t think people realize how much goes into the preparation of events of this magnitude. Everything was perfect from the President s Dinner on Friday night to the bus tour of DC to the banquet. We all enjoyed it. Aside from enjoyment, the Daughters also tackled many business items. We identified the schools where we will send funds this year and we had lengthy discussions on how to best identify and help hungry children in Evrytania. We were fortunate enough to have the Regional Governor; Mr. Aristides Tasios join us for this discussion. He informed us that there are several options available. In particular, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation; this foundation provides funding for various needs in Greece. Mr. Tasios said that he will know by mid-july how much funding they will receive in Evrytania and he will let us know what they gaps are. The Daughters agreed that once we know what the gap is we will look at our discretionary budget to see what help we can provide. We want every child in Evrytania to have the tools necessary for success. We believe that without proper nutrition and school supplies these children will not be able to reach their full potential. After the meeting and a nice luncheon many of us took a bus tour of Washington. It was wonderful to see the excitement of our visitors from Greece as they saw the monuments, the White House, and the Capitol in person. 6 APRIL - JUNE 2018 «VELOUCHI» 6 4 th Annual Board Meeting ---By Sotirios Nasios--- C hapter 10 Itia had the pleasure and honor to host the 4 th annual Velouchi Board meeting. On Saturday afternoon, I met Kosta and Eleni Paspalis at the Marriott Hotel where we anxiously anticipated the arrival of our national president Laura Nixon along with Mr. Nixon and all those who were traveling with them. When Bobby pulled in with the van, we all experienced that family reunion that you get when you see faces you are connected to. Once everyone got situated in the hotel, we went out for a light dinner. Some that traveled had family and friends in the area and ventured on their own. At dinner we had a great time and shared a few beers and a few laughs. On Sunday, we attended services at Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox church. Once church was over, we headed to Greek Village restaurant, where we enjoyed a great lunch. Although the food was great, the company was even better. The place was humming from individual conversations and we really enjoyed spending time together. We were having such a great time that we were a little late going back to the church to conduct our meeting I apologize to the few people that were waiting at the church! All and all we were 40 people. The daughters held their own meeting in a separate room. The meeting itself went very well and we finished in a timely fashion. Because the weather had turned wintery with rain, we said our goodbyes so our out of town guests could start the journey back home. We were sad to let them go but we knew very well that we will be together again soon at the convention. Thank you to those who traveled far to be here with us! It was an honor hosting you, and we are looking forward to seeing all of you in June.

8 APRIL - JUNE 2018 «VELOUCHI» 8 == NEWS FROM OUR CHAPTERS == CHAPTER #4 O Elatos CHARLOTTE, NC In Loving Memory of Pete Gus Gavrilis Pete Gus Gavrilis of Charlotte passed away on Friday, June 22, 2018, surrounded by his loving family. He was born September 2, 1934, in Megalo Horio, Evytania, Greece. In 1951 at the young age of 17, he boarded the Nea Ellas and began his journey across the ocean leaving behind family and hardships. He began in Weldon, NC, then onto Kinston, NC working in various restaurants to support himself. In 1953 he followed his older brother George to Charlotte opening his first restaurant, Eat Well Grill on W. Trade Street followed by Pete's Grill on South Boulevard. In 1976 he opened Carolina Family Restaurant on Wilkinson Boulevard which he continued to work daily until recently when his health wouldn't allow. He was a long time member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral. He worked very hard and enjoyed spending time with his family. He was loved by many people, always known for having a kind heart, gentle smile and a vivid sense of humor. Pete is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Athena Gavrilis, his son, Gus, daughter, Maria and her husband Spiro, with whom he had a very special bond. He will also be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren: Athena and Peter. He is also survived by sisters: Sofia Makris and Foteini Manousos both of Greece; brothers George (Nina) of Charlotte, and Vasilios (Ekaterina) Gavrilis of Greece, and various nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Hariklia Mathes of Greece. The family is very grateful to Dr. John Holevas and Dr. Stewart Garner for their loving care.

10 APRIL - JUNE 2018 «VELOUCHI» 10 == NEWS FROM OUR CHAPTERS == CHAPTER #10 Itia WASHINGTON, DC --By Sotirios Nasios--- Greek Independence Day Parade On March 25 th our Chapter took part in the annual Greek Independence Day parade in Baltimore. The weather was cold but that did not stop many of our members from coming out and taking part. For me, the parade is a solemn event that commands respect. As I gaze upon the sea of waiving Greek flags, I can only begin to comprehend the love for country, the devotion, and the personal sacrifice they represent. There is always an abundance of pride and joy when we realize that somehow we are the descendents of those brave men and women that fought for our freedom. After the parade, we enjoyed some great food at the local Greek restaurants in full tsiolia attire. Our foustaneles are now hanging in the closets, patiently waiting for next year to take part in this great annual event. CONGRATULATIONS Zoe Nasios graduated from Towson University with a Bachelors of Science in Psychology. She graduated in the top 5 percent of her class with Latin Honors of Magna Cum Laude. Zoe will be attending the University of Maryland Baltimore beginning in the fall to earn a Masters degree in social work for clinical mental health counseling with a specialization with children and adolescents. Panos graduated from Artios Academies Sugar Hill in May She has been Greek dancing since age four, and annually performs at the Atlanta Greek Festival and competes in the Hellenic dance festival (HDF). She recently joined the Atlanta adult Greek dance group, and plans to continue with the festival and HDF. Stephanie also has a passion for figure skating, and plans to coach that sport. Stephanie plans to engage in a real estate career which has been a family tradition for many years. She also plans to go to Georgia State University. and grandson of Mrs. Georgia Vastakis and the late Nikolaos Vastakis, graduated from Henry W. Grady High School in Atlanta. He is a proud member of both the Cathedral and Metropolitan Altar boy teams. He is an active member of the Annunciation Cathedral dance group participating in local events as well as HDF. Nikolaos will be attending Georgia State University in the fall. His studies will concentrate in Film and Media. Pauline Vastakis graduated with honors from Georgia Tech with a degree in Civil Engineering. She is the daughter of Patty Vastakis and the granddaughter of Pete & Pauline Giannakopoulos. Pauline is working as a project manager with Brasfield and Gorrie in Atlanta. Anastasia (Stacey) Katherine Cook (picture not available) graduated from the University of South Carolina with a degree in Biology. She is the daughter of James and Dina Cacavias Cook. She is involved in the College of Health and Human Development as an ambassador and was a teaching assistant in an introductory health class in the spring semester. Alexandra plans to attend medical school after she completes her undergraduate studies at Penn State. Mary Senos just completed her 1st year as an undergraduate student at the University of Delaware where she is studying Communication with a minor in Arabic. Mary is also a member of the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps. Two of the scholarships given to the young ladies, are in the name of Golfo Kakouras, May Her Memory Be Eternal! The meeting was held today at Karpenissi with the chairman and the Board of Directors of our team, with Mrs Steacy Karageorgos, member of the Board of Directors of the club Daughters of Evrytania, Winston- Salem NC. Mrs Steacy informed the members of the club's Board that an effort was made by their club at Winston Salem, to raise some of the money to buy the 4X4 rescue car, that is needed for the team's needs. He gave the members of the Board a check of $ 2,000, which will be deposited into an account of the union that will be opened to a bank for this purpose. The Velouchi Youth has also supported the Rescue Team with $800. The members of our association want to thank all the Evritanians who have helped and helped collectively or individually the voluntary work of our team. 14 APRIL - JUNE 2018 «VELOUCHI» 14 Our 74 th National Convention Was a Great Success ---By Sotirios Nasios--- B y the time Friday, June 15th came around many Evrytanians had converged to Washington DC marking the beginning of our 74th annual National Convention, and what a Convention it was. A three--day weekend full of activities, meetings, dancing, great fellowship and celebration. We started Friday night with the traditional president s dinner. The event took place at the Mykonos restaurant. The forty seven people that attended the dinner packed the room tightly. The food was great and the company was greater. We had the pleasure to have with us His Eminence Metropolitan Georgios of Karpenisi, along with Fr. Ilarion and Fr. George Chrisafogiorgos from Agious Evrytanes. We also had the pleasure to have with us the mayor of Karpenisi Mr. Nikolaos Souliotis with his son, the mayor of Agrafa Mr. Theodoros Babalis and his wife, and the antiperiferiarxis, Mr. Aristidis Tasios. At the conclusion of our dinner, Mr. Souliotis addressed the crowd highlighting some of the accomplishments of the city of Karpenisi and the accomplishments of some Evrytanian athletes. Afterward, we headed back to the hotel where the youth head organized the Greek Night event. With about 160 young adults present and music provided by DJ Serafim, it was a great event. Everyone had a great time and many of the youth chose to stay at the hotel afterward instead of driving home. On Saturday morning we attended to the Associations business. The Evrytanian Association and the Daughters of Evrytania held their meetings at the North Bethesda Marriott hotel and Conference Center. The meetings were well attended and very productive. Dr. Paul Dallas known for his excellent time management skills and down to business approach was the assemblies chair. The meetings were attended by all of our visitors from Greece including the visiting students that were here through the sister cities program. After a lunch break, the men resumed their

On Saturday, we also had the basketball tournament at a near by high school. Four teams participated, and in the end, the Washington chapter 10 Itia team walked away with the championship honors. Congratulations to the team, and a big thank you to William Steele for putting the Basketball Tournament together. Saturday night s Grand Banquet was an amazing event. The event took place in the grand ballroom of the North Bethesda Marriott Hotel and Conference Center. With more than 400 in attendance, the place was buzzing with excitement. The food was great and the Golden Flame band kept us dancing all night. Our special guests that addressed the crowd included Mr. Souliotis, Mr. Babalis, Mr. Tasios, His Excellency Ambassador Haris Lalakos and the Keynote Speaker, the Honorable Congressman, John Sarbanes. The retired senator Paul Sarbanes also made a surprise appearance. Those in attendance also heard remarks from our national president Laura Nixon, chapter 10 Itia president Sotirios Nasios and our Velouchi Youth president Christina Chulkas. After the scholarship awards of about $30k, the president of Itia Sotirios Nasios recognized some of the chapter's members for their dedication and commitment to the association for over 30 years. He also recognized our national president Laura Nixon for her great leadership. On Sunday, we attended church services at Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church. His Eminence Metropolitan of Karpenisi Georgios, officiated the service with the assistance of Father George, Fr. Ilarion, Fr. Michael and Deacon Nikolaos. A memorial service and Artoklasia were performed for the Evrytanians.

The final event of the weekend was the Panigiri Luncheon, where we had an opportunity to break bread together, reflect on the weekend and say farewell to our visiting guest. The setting was beautiful with spacious green views of the church property. The food was great and everyone that attended had a good time. The weather was a little hot but that did not dampen anyone s spirits. After we had the raffle drawings we said our goodbyes and made promises to see each other at next year s convention. On behalf of all the members of chapter 10 Itia I want to thank each and every one of you that attended this year s convention. We hope your visit was pleasant and that you made some great memories. It was an honor hosting the convention and we thank you for being part of it. We are looking forward to next year s convention as we will be celebrating our 75th Anniversary.

Now that the convention is over and we have had a few days to recuperate and reflect on this last weekend, I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you who made the long trip to Washington, D.C. to support us. I would especially like to thank those of you who joined us on the Daughters Guided Tour! The day was beautiful and a wonderful time was had by all! Our amazing tour guide was very thorough in giving the history behind all the sites. We passed by the National Institute of Health, the Washington National Cathedral, St Sophia s Greek Orthodox Church and the Greek Embassy, just to name a few. However, we stopped and got off the bus to see and take pictures of the White House, the U.S. Capitol Building and the Lincoln Memorial. We took pictures from the bus of the Washington Monument and the Jefferson Memorial. Hopefully at our next convention here in D.C., we can make a point of seeing everything on foot, which will probably take a few days. Again, thank you so much! 18 APRIL - JUNE 2018 «VELOUCHI» 18 == SISTER CITIES: ASHEVILLE & KARPENISSI == ---By Ms. Caterina Tsiouma--- Bridge for empowerment and inspiration I n the humanities and cultural studies, at the time of the globalized world and intense intercultural exchanges, the issues of diaspora and developing concrete links between the familiar place and the motherland are very crucial. In literature or linguistics, scholars consider with particular interest the linguistic behavior, the bridges and the return paths created by the expatriates using the mother tongue, the customs and traditions, the connections and opportunities of communication with people, based on nostalgia and craving for the return to their homeland, concerning more or less the difficulties of everyday life in a "foreign" country. In this reasoning, when we go further in real life conditions, even the Greeks of the diaspora, or deeper the Evritanians, we see that the bonds and bridges between the birthplace and the country of activation are deeply inside them. They are connected with our dynamic presence internationally, the desire of progress, excellence, with ethos and virtue, in a Greek way. Indeed, during the most recent years of the last crisis that our country is experiencing, their presence, although they live abroad, is noticeable. This is what we recently experienced by contacting Evritanians who have brought their lives to USA in the second half of the 20th century. The trip Thanks to the Sister Cities Association of Karpenissi, which has been officially twinned since 2004 with Asheville, North Carolina, we have been honored as a group of 6 young people derived from Karpenissi, Evritania (Danae Giannouli, GiorgosGoroyas, ChrysoulaDufekia, Maria Rellia, Dimitris Stamatis, Katerina Tsiouma) and Mr. Leonidas Papadopoulos, president of the Association, to visit 4 US cities (6-21 June). The benefits of this visit effectively correspond to the goals and priorities of the Sister Cities Association of Karpenissi, which in 2018 progresses in a very productive manner, creating a website to promote its outward orientation and promoting twinning processes with pending cities by opening up channels of communication, friendship, cooperation and intercultural dialogue of Karpenissi with other regions and cities at European and international level. It has to be said that this trip was an unforgettable and very special experience for all of us as it was a rich journey of educational, cultural actions, exchange of business and development of ideas, friendships and bridges of communication and intercultural contacts between the American and Greek World. Describing our journey chronologically, we arrived in Charlotte, NC, on June 6th. Thanks to the worm hospitality of Tom and Laura Nixon, and many other person that come from Evritania, we had the opportunity to visit the Church of the Holy Trinity, the offices of the local Evritanian Chapter "ELATOS", the church of the Virgin Mary of Prousiotissa, the headquarters of the Evritanian Association of America Velouchi, and the Socrates Academy, an exemplary school, where the educational work is extremely high and the contribution to Hellenism is admirable. Between 9 and 14 of June, we participated in our hosting program in Asheville, North Carolina, by US citizens and Evritanian people. Asheville, a mountainous town with many similarities to Karpenissi, geographic, demographic, developmental and economic potential ones, embraced us equally warmly. Hosted by people who opened their homes and hearts to us, we were guided around the city: Blue Ridge Parkway Tour and Glass Falls, Sliding Rock, Biltmore Estate Tour, Cold Mountain, Cradle of Forestry, Thomas Wolfe's home, and to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. HOLY TRINITY GREEK ORTHODOX CATHEDRAL CHARLOTTE PANAGIA PROUSIOTISSA CHAPEL CHARLOTTE, NC SOCRATES ACADEMY PUBLIC CHARTER SCHOOL-CHARLOTTE Also, there were visits with very interesting presentations of the development agencies of the city to the Chamber of Commerce and the Town Hall, where the mayor and Mr. Papadopoulos reaffirmed the twinning of the two cities, and June 10 was established as "Karpenissi Day" for Asheville. The University of North Carolina and the Asheville- Buncombe Technical Community College were two other major stations. On Thursday, June 15, we traveled to Washington for the 74th Convention Evritanian Association of America Velouchi, making a stop before at the North Carolina State University in Raleigh. In Washington, apart from the warm hospitality, our participation in the Convention has been equally important for various reasons.

19 ΑΠΡΗΛΗΟ - ΗΟΤΝΗΟ 2018 «ΣΟ ΒΔΛΟΤΥΗ» 19 == SISTER CITIES: ASHEVILLE & KARPENISSI == We had the opportunity to meet peers from the second or third generation of Evritanian migrants in the United States, as well as to follow up on the discussion of the Association s Convention, with their productive and fruitful dialogue on theirs activities and benefits for so many years. Personally, as a receiver of Velouchi s scholarshipprogram during my academic years, but also as honored chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Evritanian Association of Achaia -Greece, I was very excited to meet my compatriots who, despite being far away from the birthplace, keep the love for Evritania, our villages and their people so strong and immortal for so long. It gives me strength and inspires my work on my own life. Their work and multiannual support are recognizable above all: this was also expressed during the Convention by the Metropolitan of Karpenissi sir George, the Mayors of Karpenissi and Agrafa (N. Souliotis and Th. Babalis) and the Vice-president of the Evritaniaregion AristeidisTassios. We visited historical sites of cultural, aesthetic and humanitarian interest, and Washington and New York museums as well. The benefits Evaluating our participation in this delegation in the US we can recall only positive thoughts. Asheville and its residents showed us that the development of a place starts with the individual, but it is more fruitful when it comes up to partnership and cooperation of all social actors. The examples and ideas once experienced can surely be transferred to our place of origin and have a practical impact on various areas of our professional and cultural everyday life. On the other hand, the example of the progress of our compatriots, the progressive spirit and the importance they give to volunteerism and the selfless offer to their homeland only an inspirational marker can be in our own life. From my contact with Velouchi, I personally came back with ideas and supplies for both Karpenissi and Evritanians of Achaia, who also left their homeland in the 20th century for a better life. Furthermore, we are very impressed with the active contribution to Hellenism; let us also fight for continuity of the Greek and Evritanian spirit from now on and more. Thanks There are so many people whom we, as a group, ought to thank for all that we have shared these days in USA, for their sacrifices, effort and time they dedicated to us. In order not to forget names, I will conclude with some verses that emphasize how we bring the homelands inside us. AristotelisValaoritis ( ) has written: My love to my homeland There is no transitive bird, which for one day ripples the clouds and passes like the wind, no ivy, which unconsciously surrounds the stone, not even lightning fading without a thunderbolt, there is not landlocked country, noise without earthquake; but I have for you, my beloved homeland, my heart broken inside. Απηό αθξηβώο βηώζακε πξόζθαηα εξρόκελνη ζε επαθή κε δηθνύο καο αλζξώπνπο πνπ έρνπλ κεηαθέξεη ηε δσή ηνπο ζηελ Ακεξηθή, θαηά ην δεύηεξν κηζό ηνπ 20νύ αηώλα. Σν ηαμίδη Σν δηάζηεκα 9-14 Ηνπλίνπ, ζπκκεηείρακε ζην πξόγξακκα θηινμελίαο καο ζην Asheville, North Carolina, από Ακεξηθαλνύο πνιίηεο θαη Δπξπηάλεο ζπκπαηξηώηεο καο. Σν Asheville κηα νξεηλή πόιε κε πνιιέο νκνηόηεηεο κε ην Καξπελήζη, γεσγξαθηθέο, δεκνγξαθηθέο, αλαπηπμηαθέο θαη νηθνλνκηθώλ δπλαηνηήησλ καο αγθάιηαζε εμίζνπ ζεξκά. Φηινμελνύκελνη από αλζξώπνπο πνπ άλνημαλ ηα ζπίηηα θαη ηηο θαξδηέο ηνπο ζε εκάο, μελαγεζήθακε ζε όιε ηελ πόιε: Blue Ridge Parkway θαη Glass Falls, Sliding Rock, Biltmore Estate, Cold Mountain, Cradle of Forestry, ην ζπίηη ηνπ Thomas Wolfe, αιιά θαη εθθιεζηαζκόο ζηελ Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. Κη έπεηηα ήηαλ νη επηζθέςεηο κε πνιύ ελδηαθέξνπζεο παξνπζηάζεηο ησλ αλαπηπμηαθώλ θνξέσλ ηεο πόιεο ζην Δπηκειεηήξην (Chamber of Commerce), αιιά θαη ην Γεκαξρείν, όπνπ ε δήκαξρνο θαη ν θ. Παπαδόπνπινο επηθύξσζαλ εθ λένπ ηελ αδειθνπνίεζε ησλ δύν πόιεσλ, ελώ ε 10ε Ηνπλίνπ θαζηεξώζεθε σο «Ζκέξα ηνπ Καξπελεζίνπ» ζην εμήο γηα ην Asheville. Σν Παλεπηζηήκην ηεο Βόξεηαο Καξνιίλαο θαη ην Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College άιιεο δύν ζεκαληηθνί ζηαζκνί. Υάξε ζηνλ ύιινγν Αδειθώλ Πόιεσλ Καξπελεζίνπ, πνπ από ην 2004 έρεη αδειθνπνηεζεί επίζεκα κε ην Asheville ηεο North Carolina είρακε ηελ ηηκή, σο κηα νκάδα 6 λέσλ κε θαηαγσγή από ην Καξπελήζη Δπξπηαλίαο (Γαλάε Γηαλλνύιε, Γηώξγνο Γθνξόγηαο, Υξπζνύια Νηνπθεθηά, Μαξία Ρέιιηα, Γεκήηξεο ηακάηεο, Καηεξίλα Σζηνύκα) θαη κε ηνλ θ. Λεσλίδα Παπαδόπνπιν, πξόεδξν ηνπ πιιόγνπ, λα επηζθεθζνύκε 4 πόιεηο ησλ Ζ.Π.Α (6-21 Ηνπλίνπ). Σα νθέιε απηήο ηεο επίζθεςεο αληαπνθξίλνληαη απνηειεζκαηηθά ζηνπο ζηόρνπο θαη ηηο πξσηαξρηθέο πξνηεξαηόηεηεο ηνπ πιιόγνπ Αδειθώλ Πόιεσλ Καξπελεζίνπ, ν νπνίνο ην 2018 πξνρσξά κε ηδηαίηεξα παξαγσγηθνύο ξπζκνύο δεκηνπξγώληαο ηζηνζειίδα γηα ηελ πξνώζεζε ηεο εμσζηξέθεηάο ηνπ θαη πξνσζώληαο ηηο δηαδηθαζίεο αδειθνπνίεζεο κε ηηο πόιεηο πνπ βξίζθνληαη ζε εθθξεκόηεηα αλνίγνληαο δηαύινπο επηθνηλσλίαο, θηιίαο, ζπλεξγαζίαο θαη δηαπνιηηηζκηθνύ δηαιόγνπ ηνπ Καξπελεζίνπ κε άιιεο πεξηνρέο ζε επξσπατθό θαη δηεζλέο επίπεδν. Πξέπεη λα εηπσζεί πσο πξόθεηηαη γηα κηα αμέραζηε θαη ηδηαίηεξα μερσξηζηή εκπεηξία γηα όινπο καο, κηαο θαη ήηαλ έλα πινύζην ηαμίδη εθπαηδεπηηθώλ, πνιηηηζκηθώλ δξάζεσλ, αληαιιαγήο επηρεηξεκαηηθώλ θαη αλαπηπμηαθώλ ηδεώλ θαη αλάπηπμεο θηιηώλ θαη γεθπξώλ επηθνηλσλίαο θαη δηαπνιηηηζκηθώλ επαθώλ. Πεξηγξάθνληαο ρξνλνινγηθά ην ηαμίδη καο, θηάζακε ζην Charlotte, North Carolina, ζηηο 6 Ηνπλίνπ. Με θηινμελία ράξε ζηνπο Tom θαη Laura Nixon, αιιά θαη πνιιώλ ζπκπαηξησηώλ καο, είρακε ηελ επθαηξία λα επηζθεθηνύκε ηνλ Ναό ηεο Αγίαο Σξηάδαο, ηα γξαθεία ηνπ ηνπηθνύ επξπηαληθνύ ηκήκαηνο «ΈΛΑΣΟ», ηνλ λαό ηεο Παλαγίαο ηεο Πξνπζηώηηζζαο, ηελ έδξα ηεο Έλσζεο ηνπ «Βεινπρηνύ», αιιά θαη ηελ «Αθαδεκία σθξάηε», έλα πξόηππν ζρνιείν ζην νπνίν ην εθπαηδεπηηθό έξγν είλαη εμαηξεηηθά πςεινύ επηπέδνπ θαη ε πξνζθνξά ζηνλ ειιεληζκό αμηνζαύκαζηε. Σελ Πέκπηε 15 Ηνπλίνπ ηαμηδέςακε πξνο ηελ Οπάζηγθηνλ, γηα ην 74 ν πλέδξην ηεο Έλσζεο Δπξπηάλσλ Ακεξηθήο «Σν ΒΔΛΟΤΥΗ», θάλνληαο πξώηα κηα ζηάζε ζην North Carolina State University ζην Raleigh. ηελ Οπάζηγθηνλ πέξα από ηε δεζηή θαη πάιη θηινμελία καο, ε ζπκκεηνρή καο ζην ζπλέδξην ππήξμε εμίζνπ ζεκαληηθή γηα πνιινύο ιόγνπο. Δίρακε ηελ επθαηξία λα γλσξίζνπκε ζπλνκήιηθνύο καο ζπκπαηξηώηεο ηεο δεύηεξεο ή θαη ηξίηεο κεηαλαζηεπηηθήο γεληάο ζηηο Ζ.Π.Α., αιιά θαη λα παξαθνινπζήζνπκε ηηο εξγαζίεο ηνπ ζπλεδξίνπ ηεο Έλσζεο, κε ηνλ παξαγσγηθό θαη γόληκν δηάινγν γηα ηηο δξάζεηο πξνζθνξάο θαη επεξγεζίαο πνπ επηηεινύλ γηα ηελ Δπξπηαλία γηα ηόζα πνιιά ρξόληα. Πξνζσπηθά, σο ππόηξνθνο θαηά ηα αθαδεκατθά κνπ ρξόληα κάιηζηα ηεο Έλσζεο, αιιά θαη πνπ κε ηηκή ηώξα βξίζθνκαη λα πξνεδξεύσ ζην Γ.. ηνπ πιιόγνπ Δπξπηάλσλ Αραΐαο, ζπγθηλήζεθα ηδηαίηεξα πνπ

Μνπ δίλεη δύλακε θαη κε εκπλέεη ην έξγν ηνπο ζηε δηθή κνπ πνξεία. Σν έξγν ηνπο θαη ηελ πνιπεηή ζηήξημε είλαη πνιιαπιάαλαγλσξίζηκν, πξάγκα πνπ εθθξάζηεθε θαη από ηνλ Μεηξνπνιίηε Καξπελεζίνπ θ.θ. Γεώξγην, ηνπο δεκάξρνπο Καξπελεζίνπ θαη Αγξάθσλ (Ν. νπιηώηε θαη Θ. Μπακπαιή) θαη ηνλ Αληηπεξηθεξεηάξρε Δπξπηαλίαο Αξ. Σαζηό. Πξηλ θύγνπκε επηζθεθηήθακε θαη ηζηνξηθνύο ρώξνπο πνιηηηζκηθνύ, αηζζεηηθνύ θαη αλζξσπηζηηθνύ ελδηαθέξνληνο θαη κνπζεία ηεο Οπάζηγθηνλ, αιιά θαη ηεο Νέαο Τόξθεο. Σα νθέιε Απνηηκώληαο ηε ζπκκεηνρή καο ζε απηή ηελ απνζηνιή ζηηο Ζ.Π.Α. κόλν ζεηηθέο ζθέςεηο κπνξνύκε λα θάλνπκε. Σν Asheville θαη νη άλζξσπνί ηνπ καο έδεημαλ πσο ε αλάπηπμε ελόο ηόπνπ μεθηλά από ην άηνκν, αιιά θαξπνθνξεί από ηε ζύκπξαμε θαη ηε ζπλεξγαζία όισλ ησλ θνηλσληθώλ θνξέσλ. Παξαδείγκαηα θαη ηδέεο ζίγνπξα κπνξνύκε λα κεηαθέξνπκε ζηνλ ηόπν θαηαγσγήο καο θαη λα έρνπλ πξαθηηθό αληίθηππν ζε δηάθνξνπο ηνκείο ηεο επαγγεικαηηθήο θαη πνιηηηζκηθήο θαζεκεξηλόηεηαο. Από ηελ άιιε πιεπξά, ην παξάδεηγκα ηεο πξνθνπήο ησλ ζπκπαηξησηώλ καο, ην θηινπξόνδν πλεύκα θαη ε ζεκαζία πνπ δίλνπλ ζηνλ εζεινληηζκό θαη ηελ αληδηνηειή πξνζθνξά πξνο ηελ παηξίδα ηνπο κόλν νδνδείθηεο έκπλεπζεο κπνξνύλ λα είλαη ζηε δηθή καο δσή. Από ηελ επαθή κνπ κε «Σν Βεινύρη», πξνζσπηθά, γύξηζα κε ηδέεο θαη εθόδηα ηόζν γηα ην Καξπελήζη, όζν θαη γηα ηνπο Δπξπηάλεο Αραΐαο, πνπ θη απηνί μεληηεύηεθαλ κέζα ζηνλ 20ό αηώλα γηα κηα θαιύηεξε δσή. Γηα ηελ πξνζθνξά ζηνλ ειιεληζκό ε ζπγθίλεζή καο είλαη κεγάιε κόλν αγώλαο θαη από ηε δηθή καο πιεπξά κέλεη λα γίλεηαη γηα ηε δηαζθάιηζε θαη ηε ζπλέρεηα ηνπ ειιεληθνύ θαη επξπηαληθνύ πλεύκαηνο. Δπραξηζηίεο Τπάξρνπλ πάξα πνιινί άλζξσπνη πνπ πξέπεη λα επραξηζηήζνπκε σο νκάδα γηα όια όζα κνηξαζηήθακε απηέο ηηο εκέξεο ζηελ Ακεξηθή, ηηο ζπζίεο θεξαζκάησλ, θόπνπ θαη ρξόλνπ όισλ. Unfortunately, I will be unable to attend the 74 th Convention this year, as this is my high school graduation weekend. Being a Hellene of Evrytanian Roumeliotiko descent has shaped my life in many ways. It has allowed me to learn how to be compassionate and, from listening to my grandparent s childhood stories, understand what they went through (i.e. poverty, war, etc.) and be a better person for it. My twin sister and I have been to Greece on numerous occasions and every time we go my parents tell us their stories of their memories from Greece when they were young. My mother remembers walking up to the Velouchiwhile breathing the purest air or visiting Prousso and touching the Panagia s footsteps imprinted into the mountain when she was a little girl, and we perform the same acts as she did every time we visit and it is amazing. When my father was the President of Enosis Evrytanon Amerikis To Karpenisi in New York, we attended your convention in Myrtle Beach three years in a row, where we had the most amazing times. We met numerous families and friends, made many memories and still keep in touch with many of them today. This Scholarship means a lot to me as my parents have always instilled our Hellenic customs (ithoi kai ethima) into my sister and I and we will continue to remember them throughout our lives. Being Greek feels so special to me as I always have family surrounding me to help with everyday decisions about school, life and religion, even if I don t ask for their opinion. But it is extra special to be from Karpenisi, as people from that region have a special bond with each other, no matter if you see them everyday or met them for the first time, you feel like you know them all your life. Growing up in our household, all we ever heard about from both pappous and giagias was how beautiful the Velouchi mountain is and how cold the mountain water is when you drink it straight from the vrisi at the plateia. I have been to Greece with my parents numerous times, along with my twin sister Nicolette, but this year it will be extra special as we are going to Ionian Village for 2-1/12 weeks then staying with my pappous & giagias for another 2 weeks where we will enjoy more stories from their youth and walk the same paths they did. This scholarship means a lot to me because growing up we attended the Velouchi Conventions in Myrtle Beach where we had memorable times and knowing that my grandparents, Theodore & Sotiria Fillos, met at one of the conventions, is so special to me. I again want to thank you and the entire committee for such an amazing honor. And as I stated previously, my sister and I will be in Greece this year during your convention and unfortunately will be unable to be present to receive the award. F or the second time in 3 years, basketball was held in conjunction with the annual Convention. Teams from Maryland, DC and Virginia were represented, all the games were competitive and a fun time was had by all. Special thanks to Panayiotis Steele for cleaning & packing up at the end of the day; and to the coaches Jim Kontzamanys, James Soiles, John Snyder, Chris Karageorge, George Wallace and Tommy Karadimas for their help in organizing the games. Congratulations to Tommy and his mates who at the end of the day were successful as the host Chapter 10 "ITIA" team took first place! We look forward to playing basketball and promoting other young adult activities next year for the 75th Anniversary Convention.
