GREEK COMMUNITY OF WINNIPEG Dear Greek Community Supporter, Thank you for your previous membership to the Greek Community of Winnipeg. With the start of a new year, we are asking you to renew your membership for Without your past contributions we would not have the Greek Community as we know it today. That s why it is so important to renew to keep the community alive. Your prior membership has enabled us to accomplish so much. In particular, this year we have: Organized and supported many community events including many youth gatherings, Cretan Night, the Greek Pavilion for Folklorama, Mother s Day Brunch, and upcoming Greek School Christmas Concert, and the New Year s Eve Party. Our Church has been able to remain open, providing spiritual nourishment and education to Orthodox Christians. We re proud of what we ve been able to do and we could not have done it without you! This coming year, 2017, marks an important milestone for our community: the 100- year anniversary of the Greek Community of Winnipeg. We look forward to celebrating with new and bigger events celebrating our community s anniversary. We want to build on our prior event successes and community spirit by reaching out to more people this year. Our facilities are an important meeting place and home for spiritual and cultural rejuvenation. Your membership fees allow us to support all of our initiatives. Membership also means you have a voice and a ballot in all community elections. Please renew your membership today in the following ways: The most preferred way to renew your membership is through automatic debit renewal. Every year, you can arrange to pay automatically via your bank. This is a preferred method because it is easy to set up, there are very low banking fees for us to pay, and the membership payment occurs automatically every year. You can also choose to pay via automatic credit card payments, however this method has higher banking fees and is therefore costly to the community. Please speak with the office administrator to set up automatic payment. Other payment methods also accepted are: cheque, cash, and regular credit or debit payments. 6 COMMUNITY BOARD ELECTIONS The date of the Community Board Elections is December Members who have served for 3 years on the Community Board of Directors will be stepping down at the end of this year. We are looking for motivated members of our Community to fill the empty seats and run in the December election for the Community Board of Directors. Those eligible to run must: Desire to contribute their time and talents, and work as part of a team for the betterment of our Community! Be eighteen (18) years of age or more and have been a resident of Canada for a continuous period of Two (2) years. Be a member in good standing of the Church in the current year.* Be a person who has lived and abides by the canons and teachings of the Greek Orthodox faith. All interested persons are asked to put their name forward to Mr. Chris Argiriou or the church office. Please contact Mr. Argiriou or any Board member if you have any questions. * Member in Good Standing - means an active member who has paid the dues prescribed by the metropolis and the parish each year for Two (2) consecutive years. image source: 6

If you already have not done so, please renew your Church membership and consider an Automatic recurring monthly donation by contacting the office at Spread over the 400 families in our Community, we would exceed our operating costs IF we received: $ 2.15 per day from each family - Less than the cost of a fancy drink at Tim Horton's. $ 15 per week from each family - Less than a dinner for 1 person at a restaurant. $ 65 per month from each family - Less than the average cable & internet bill. $ 784 per year from each family - Less than a family gym membership. 13 Church Etiquette When attending Divine Services we all have the responsibility of maintaining proper decorum and atmosphere in the church. The very first thing to keep in mind is that we are to be at Divine Services on time. The church is the House of God. Reverence and good manners are required at all times. No irreverent or irrelevant conversations should go on in the Narthex or in the church proper. There are certain times during the Divine Services when no one should be moving about, or entering the church, or being seated at a pew. Wherever a person happens to be at these moments, he or she should stop and stand reverently until the proper moment to be seated. These times are: 1. During the Doxology, while the priest is censing. 2. During the Small Entrance - The procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gospel. 3. When the priest censes the Altar, icons, and congregation throughout the Divine Liturgy. 4. During the reading of the Epistle and Gospel. 5. During the sermon. 6. During the Great Entrance - the procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gifts. 7. During the recitation of the Creed and Lord s Prayer (Our Father). 8. During the Consecration of the Holy Gifts. (Se Imnoumen) 9. During Holy Communion. To receive Holy Communion the faithful should come forth from the side aisles and exit via the centre aisle to return to their pew. 10. When receiving any sacrament of the church, use your baptismal/chrismation name. 11. During any special services such as Memorials or blessing of the loaves, special doxologies, etc. The general rule is that whenever the priest is outside the Holy Altar either with the censer or for giving a blessing, there should be no movement in the church. Also, we remind everyone that we should attend the Divine Liturgy and all services of divine worship from the beginning. Please remember that Parish Council members are obligated to maintain order and decorum in the church during worship. Please try to understand us. Cooperate with us. 15 Εκκλησιαστική Εθιμοτυπία Όταν είμαστε στην εκκλησία, όλοι έχουμε την ευθύνη να κρατήσουμε την σωστή ευπρέπεια και ατμόσφαιρα του ναού. Το πρώτο πράγμα που πρέπει να θυμόμαστε είναι ότι πρέπει να είμαστε στην εκκλησία στην ώρα μας. Η εκκλησία είναι ο οίκος του Θεού. Η ευλάβεια και οι σωστοί τρόποι απαιτούνται πάντα. Δεν πρέπει να γίνεται άσχετη ή ασεβής συζήτηση στον Νάρθηκα ή μέσα στον ναό. Υπάρχουν μερικές στιγμές στις ακολουθίες που κανένας δεν πρέπει να κινείται, η να μπαίνει στην εκκλησία, η να κάθεται. Όπου και να βρίσκεται ο άνθρωπος σε αυτές τις στιγμές, πρέπει να σταματήσει και να σταθεί όρθιος με σεβασμό έως την κατάλληλη στιγμή να καθίσει. Αυτές οι στιγμές είναι, 1. Στην Δοξολογία, όταν ο ιερέας θυμιάζει. 2. Στην Μικρή Είσοδο, στην διάρκεια της πομπής του Ευαγγελίου με τα ιερόπαιδα και τον ιερέα. 3. Όταν ο ιερέας θυμιάζει το Ιερό, τις εικόνες, και τον κόσμο στην διάρκεια της Θείας Λειτουργίας. 4. Στην ανάγνωση του Αποστόλου και του Ευαγγελίου. 5. Στο κήρυγμα. 6. Στην Μεγάλη Είσοδο, στην διάρκεια της πομπής των Αγίων Δώρων με τα ιερόπαιδα και τον ιερέα. 7. Στην απαγγελία του Πιστεύω και της Κυριακής Προσευχής (Πάτερ Ημών). 8. Στην Αναφορά (καθαγίαση) Των Αγίων Δώρων (Στον ύμνο Σε Υμνούμεν). 9. Στην Θεία Κοινωνία. Για να λάβουν τη Θεία Κοινωνία, οι πιστοί έρχονται από το πλάι και επιστρέφουν στις θέσεις τους από το μεσαίο διάδρομο. 10. Όταν λαμβάνουμε ένα Μυστήριο της Εκκλησίας, χρησιμοποιούμε το βαπτιστικό μας όνομα. 11. Σε ειδικές ακολουθίες, σαν τα μνημόσυνα, τις αρτοκλασίες, ειδικές δοξολογίες, κλπ. Ο γενικός κανόνας είναι, όταν ο ιερέας είναι εκτός του Ιερού, είτε με το θυμιατό ή για να δώσει ευλογία, δεν γίνεται κίνηση στην εκκλησία. Επίσης, θυμίζουμε όλους ότι πρέπει να είμαστε στην Λειτουργία και σε όλες τις ακολουθίες από την αρχή. Μη ξεχνάτε ότι τα μέλη του συμβουλίου είναι υποχρεωμένα να κρατήσουν την τάξη και την ευπρέπεια στην εκκλησία. Ζητάμε την κατανόηση σας. Συνεργαστείτε μαζί μας. Οι ιερείς είναι εδώ να υπηρετήσουν. Η συνεργασία σας στην παρακολούθηση αυτών των κανονισμών θα μα βοηθήσει πολύ στο έργο μας να προσφέρουμε τη βοήθεια μας σε όλες τις πνευματικές ανάγκες σας. 15

18 Thoughts from our Parish Priest Movement in Prayer and Worship Orthodox worship is characterized by a complete use of the senses: sight, smell, hearing, speech and touch. We see the candles and Icons. We hear the sounds of singing and reading. We smell the incense. The whole of the human person is involved in worship. The attitude of the Orthodox Believer to worship is reverential, and certain types of bodily movements are used to reinforce this sense of reverential piety. We stand during the services, we make bows and prostrations, and with great frequency, we make the Sign of the Cross. Accordingly, there are several types of prostrations, depending on the solemnity of the moment. Full Prostration (Great Metanoia): Here the worshipper prostrates the whole body, throwing the weight forwards onto the hands and touching the ground with the forehead. Small Prostration (Small Metanoia): The worshipper bows from the waist, touching the ground with the fingers of the right hand. Both Prostrations and Bows are preceded by the Sign of the Cross. Bow: Bow your heads to the Lord. At certain times the worshipper merely bows the head. Sign of the Cross: The Sign of the Cross is made with the thumb and the first two fingers of the right hand joined at the tips (the third and fourth fingers being closed on the palm). By joining the thumb and the first two fingers, we express our belief in the Most-Holy Trinity. The two fingers closed on the palm represent the two natures of Christ divine and human. With the thumb and first two fingers joined, we touch first the brow, then the breast, the right shoulder and then the left, making on ourselves the Sign of the Cross and signifying by the four points that the Holy Trinity has sanctified our thoughts (mind), feelings (heart), desires (soul) and acts (strength) to service of God. By making the Sign of the Cross on ourselves we also signify that Christ has saved us by His sufferings on the Cross. Bishops and Priests, in bestowing a blessing, make the Sign of the Cross from left to right (appearing to us from right to left), while holding the fingers in such a manner as to represent the Greek letters IC and XC the first and last letter of the name Jesus Christ. 18

19 Thoughts from our Parish Priest Κίνηση στην Προσευχή και Λατρεία Η Ορθόδοξη Λατρεία χαρακτηρίζεται από την πλήρης χρήση των αισθήσεων: Τη μυρωδιά, την όραση, την ακοή, την ομιλία, και την αφή. Ακούμε την ψαλμωδία και την ανάγνωση. Μυρίζουμε το θυμίαμα. Βλέπουμε τα κεριά και τις εικόνες. Ολόκληρος ο άνθρωπος παίρνει μέρος στην λατρεία, με όλο το σώμα του. Η στάση του Ορθόδοξου πιστού να λατρεύσει είναι ευλαβική, και μερικοί τύποι κινήσεως χρησιμοποιούνται να ενισχύσουν αυτή τη αίσθηση ευσέβειας. Στεκόμαστε όρθιοι στις ακολουθίες, κάνουμε μετάνοιες και υποκλίσεις, και πολύ συχνά κάνουμε τον Σταυρό μας. Επομένως, υπάρχουν διαφορές μετάνοιες και κινήσεις, που τις κάνουμε σε διαφορά σημεία. Η Μεγάλη Μετάνοια Εδώ ο πιστός γονατίζει στα τέσσερα και ακουμπάει το πάτωμα με το μέτωπο του. Μετά σηκώνεται και κάνει τον Σταυρό του. Μικρή Μετάνοια Ο πιστός σκύβει από τη μέση, αγγίζοντας το πάτωμα με τα δάχτυλα του (η όσο πιο χαμηλά μπορεί να σκύψει). Μετά στέκεται όρθιος και κάνει τον Σταυρό του. Κλίση Τας κεφαλάς υμών κλίνατε. Σε μερικά σημεία ο πιστός απλώς σκύβει το κεφάλι του. Το Σταύρωμα Ο Σταυρός γίνεται με τον αντίχειρα και τα πρώτα δυο δάκτυλα ενωμένα, με τα υπόλοιπα δάκτυλα κλειστά στην παλάμη. Ενώνοντας τον αντίχειρα και τα δυο δάκτυλα εκφράζουμε την πίστη μας στην Αγία Τριάδα. Τα υπόλοιπα δυο κλειστά δάκτυλα αντιπροσωπεύουν τις δυο φύσεις του Ιησού Χριστού, την θεϊκή και την ανθρώπινη. Με τον αντίχειρα και δυο δάκτυλα αγγίζουμε πρώτα το μέτωπο, το στήθος ή το στομάχι, τον δεξί ώμο, και τον αριστερό ώμο. Έτσι κάνουμε το σχήμα του Σταυρού στο σώμα μας και δείχνουμε ότι η Αγία Τριάδα έχει αγιάσει τις σκέψεις μας ( τον νου μας ), τα αισθήματα μας (την καρδιά ), τις θελήσεις μας ( την ψυχή μας ), και τις πράξεις μας ( την ισχύ μας ), για να υπηρετήσουμε τον Θεό. Σταυρώνοντας τους εαυτούς μας ομολογούμε ότι ο Χριστός μας έχει σώσει με τα Άγια Πάθη Του στον Σταυρό. Αρχιερείς και ιερείς, δίνοντας ευλογία, κάνουν το σημείο του Σταυρού από αριστερά στα δεξιά ( σε εμάς φαίνεται ανάποδα ), κρατώντας τα δάκτυλα σε τέτοιο τρόπο ώστε να αντιπροσωπεύουν τα αρχαία ελληνικά γράμματα IC και XC, δηλαδή τα πρώτα και τελευταία γράμματα του ονόματος Ιησούς Χριστός. 19

20 Church Iconography Program Beloved in Christ, In this bulletin you will find the program of our iconography, as well as a sample of what the remaining icons will look like. The top layer of the icons is the New Testament icons, which will be put up on the right side of the church (as you face the Altar). The bottom layer is the Old Testament icons, which will be put up on the left side of the church. The theme is Promise and Fulfilment, and it depicts the promises given by God in the Old Testament, and the parallel, or fulfilment of each promise in the New Testament. These icons will be installed on the top halves of the side walls of our church. We are also installing icons of individual saints along the lower halves of the side walls of the church. There is no program for these icons, meaning that each donor can choose the Saint to be depicted (as long as it hasn t been donated already). I can give you some suggestions if you d like. Finally, we are changing the small icons on the iconostasis (temblon) of our Altar, as the current ones have been aged and darkened. For a list of those icons, please contact me directly. The price for a scriptural scene (upper half of the walls) panel is $9,500. The price for an individual saint (lower half of the walls) is $2,500. The price of the icons on the iconostasis is $2,500. You can also make a general donation toward the iconography of the church, as many people have done already. Another option is donating an icon as a group. As I have mentioned in previous bulletins we strive to be good stewards of the Lord's business and every dollar is accounted for. Please take a minute to read what your participation has helped us to accomplish through our Bake sales, Sunday Coffee, loukoumathes, a donation on Sunday of Orthodoxy to Philoptochos, memorials, funerals, trays, Palm Sunday, St. Philothei's brunch, Agapi canisters, Eranos tis Agapis, Christmas joy, and Folklorama. Church donations: Two Icons St. Philothei and the Crucifixion of our Lord, new kitchen, flowers for the veneration of the Holy Cross, GOYA, Sunday School, Camp Metamorphosis, Greek School, Christmas party & gifts for the seniors, the priest, the deacon, the administrator, and caretaker, gift cards at the Church office for the poor, coolers-freezers, Hall renovations, helped immigrants, paid rent for 3 families (where the need was great), Soccer team (provided dessert at their Fundraising dinner), helped sick people in our City, Toronto and Calgary (we rather not disclose the names because of confidentiality), Vila Rosa a home for Mothers and Babies Alpha House, Osborne House and W.I.S.H (women in second step housing) abused women and children, Union Gospel Shiloam Mission, Forward Ministries for Men, Winnipeg Harvest (food & clothing), Prison for Women, local priest and Cancer society, a presvytera and a sick young woman in the U.S.A in great need, two schools in our city for the Children's breakfast program (George Waters and Shaughnessy Elementary), Hamogelo to Pethiou, Kivotos tou Kosmou, a sick child in Greece, a poor family in Greece, poor students in Crete, Osia Xeni Ministry to the prisoners, SOS Villages in Greece, plane ticket to Greece for a person in great and desperate need to return home, gave some money to two ladies from Greece in great desperation too. We have helped the Mission of St. John the Compassionate in Toronto, St. Andrews College donation from Philoptochos, Sierra Leone Orphanage in Volos Greece, Syrian relief in the Philippines and Japan. We have provided air fare and lodging to Philoptochos members attending Clergy & Laity (mandatory), IOCC for fresh food in Greece Agapi Table, and we have fulfilled all of our obligations to the Metropolis by submitting our 7% membership to Vasilopita, Orthodox Voice Theological Academy, Ecumenical Patriarchate and the Eranos tis Agapis. 24 FOLKLORAMA Αυτη η ανακοινωσις γινεται με επαρση και απεριοστη Ελληνικη υπερηφανεια για τα αποτελεσματα της βαθμολογιας απο το συμβουλιο του Φολκλοραμα για το Περιπτερο μας. Ο ανωτατος βαθμος 6 και εμεις πηραμε 5.65 στην εκθεση της κουλτουρας μας. Συγχαρητηρια για μια τοσο ενημερωτικη και προσεγμενη παρουσιαση. Συγχαρητηρια και καθε επαινος σε ολους και στον καθενα ξεχωριστα γιατι εδω γινεται καταθεση ψυχης και κοπος για την αποπερατωση της Γιορτης. Το Φολκλοραμα μας ενωνει καταβαλλοντας καθε δυνατη προσπαθεια ολοι οι εθελοντες με συμπνοια εργαζομαστε. Εδω το εγω δεν υπαρχει, μοναδικος σκοπος και στοχος μας... η επιτυχια του Περιπτερου μας για την αξιοπρεπεια της ομορφης μας Κοινοτητας, της Ελλαδα μας και την δοξα του μεγαλου Θεου μας στον Οποιον και χρωσταμε καθε μας επιτυχια γιατι μας εχει εφοδιασει με την δυναμη, με την χαρα με αμετρητο ενθουσιασμο και ανεξαντλητα χαρισματα προς εκπαιρεωση της εκδηλωσης αυτης. Μεγαλη η ευθυνη για 46 ολοκληρα χρονια αλλα και με εξαιρετα αποτελεσματα. Αγαπαμε τους επισκεπτας μας και αυτοι ανταποκρινοντε με την υποστηριξη τους και την φιλια τους. The highest mark according to the Folks council is 6 and we got 5.65 for our Cultural Display a well deserved mark because the display was done exceptionally well. Congratulations to all volunteers for their dedication and harmonious teamwork (where there is no I) for the wonderful outcome of the festival. We work in one accord and we focus and strife to benefit our beautiful Community. We are debtors to our God Who has blessed us with tremendous gifts. For 46 years the pavilion is strong. GODPARENTS SUNDAY RETURNS! It s been many years since our parish had a Godparents Sunday Brunch, but it s back! WHEN: SUNDAY NOVEMBER 6, 2016, IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING DIVINE LITURGY WHERE: THE MAIN HALL WHO: THE SUNDAY SCHOOL INVITES ALL GODPARENTS TO COME WITH THEIR GODCHILDREN OF ALL AGES. (EVERYONE ELSE IS INVITED, TOO) WHY: BECAUSE WE LOVE OUR GODPARENTS! COST IS $10 PER ADULT AND CHILDREN OVER 10, CHILDREN 10 AND YOUNGER COST IS $5 PER CHILD. This event will be the Sunday School s main fundraiser this year, so we hope to see everyone there so we can raise the money we need to keep bringing quality educational materials to St. Demetrios. 27 Sunday School ALL ABOUT ANGELS On Sunday November 13 Father Kosta will be teaching a special class in the church on Angels. Children will come to their classes as usual for attendance and then will go back to the church for Father Kosta s class. Parents are also welcome! Come and learn what angels really are, and what angels are not! ALSO ON NOVEMBER 13 THE SUNDAY SCHOOL GIVING TREE WILL BE UP! Everybody please take as many ornament tags as you can and purchase the named items on them for a family in need, and return the new, UNWRAPPED items to the Sunday School. The Giving Tree is a way for our students to help a family in need at a time of year when need is most sharply felt, but it is also a way for a family in need to help our students. HOW? Our students are helped on the day the classes learn about their adopted family. It starts when their faces change when they realize how hurting some families are, and just how much they need. They learn empathy by choosing something that they want to buy for someone, shopping for that item, and bringing it to Church to be laid as an offering to Christ Himself under the Christmas tree. They learn that whenever they bring gifts with love in their hearts to others in need, they are bringing those gifts to Christ himself. SUNDAY SCHOOL NEEDS: It is that time of year again Time to start planning our Nativity festivities for our parish children. We are seeking sponsors for the gifts that we will give the students (usually some candy, an icon or spiritual book). Please contact Victoria Marckx if you can help out in this way. Thank you! 28 Sunday School MOBILE ORTHODOX CHILDREN S BOOK LIBRARY Our parish is the first in Canada to introduce an Orthodox children s book library to bring beautiful but expensive (and in some cases hard-to-find) children s books to our children. Through the generous donations of both parishioners and non-parishioners alike, we have procured a library cart with over 100 books from board books to chapter books for our middle school readers. Some fiction, some fact, all Orthodox! We have been very blessed to have several authors donate copies of their books to our parish library, stretching our donor dollars further and notable publishers have offered us deep discounts as well. We are continuing our quest for new Orthodox books for our library, and welcome all donations and suggestions of books we might include. Please see Victoria Marckx if you would like to donate to our library fundraiser. BUY BEAUTIFUL ORTHODOX BOOKS FOR YOUR CHILDREN or grandchildren, nieces, nephews, godchildren, and anyone else who loves to read. This month we will be sending home order forms with all children. Parents can purchase the Orthodox books featured for their children simply by returning the order form with a cheque made payable to St. Demetrios. The books will be ordered and brought to the Church for distribution. The proceeds will go to the Children s book library fund. Books make wonderful gifts for Christmas, name days, birthdays, or any other occasion. Books should arrive during the first week of Advent, in order to be a perfect complement to the Advent Fast. 28

30 Greek School We would like to thank everyone for coming to the Greek School OXI Day Celebration and Coffee held on Sunday, October 30th. Special thanks to the Greek School families who helped with a food donation and/or volunteered their time for this event.
