5 COMMUNITY BOARD ELECTIONS / ΚΟΙΝΟΤΙΚΕΣ ΕΚΛΟΓΕΣ The time of year is fast approaching members of the Greek Community of Winnipeg... Community Board Elections! Members who have served for 3 years on the Community Board of Directors will be stepping down at the end of this year. We are looking for motivated members of our Community to fill the empty seats and run in the December election for the Community Board of Directors. Those eligible to run must: Desire to contribute their time and talents, and work as part of a team for the betterment of our Community! Be eighteen (18) years of age or more and have been a resident of Canada for a continuous period of Two (2) years. Be a member in good standing of the Church in the current year.* Be a person who has lived and abides by the canons and teachings of the Greek Orthodox faith. All interested persons are asked to put their name forward to the Church office. Please contact the office or any Board member if you have any questions. 6 Guidelines for PROPER PARKING within the church and MHCC parking lots: Only those with a valid handicap parking permit may park in the Handicap Parking spots. Do not park on the grass. Do not park on the sidewalk. This includes the area in front of the Church exit stairs next to Shaftesbury Boulevard. Do not park in the fire lane. Do not park in the driving lane. Do not park in the back lane. Anyone parked in a Handicap parking stall without a valid Handicap permit, parked in a fire lane, on the sidewalk, on the grass, in the driving lane, or in the back lane will receive A TICKET FROM THE CITY OF WINNIPEG. This ticket may affect your driver's license, so please park responsibly. If you have any questions or need help parking your vehicle, please see one of the church service ushers. When you visit the Church or MHCC during the week (Monday to Friday), PLEASE go to the Church office and register your vehicle; tell the office administrator the license plate number and make & model of your car. This will avoid the office confusing your vehicle with parked cars that belong to people who are not visiting the church or MHCC. 6

7 Contribution Envelope Donations For Community members who make a monetary donation/contribution, we ask that when using a Contribution Envelope to please fill out all of the information on the envelope - date, full member name, member number, amount in the envelope - so as to assist the office in properly recording your monetary contributions, so that we may provide an accurate tax receipt at the end of the year. (please refer to the example envelope image below.) 13 Church Etiquette When attending Divine Services we all have the responsibility of maintaining proper decorum and atmosphere in the church. The very first thing to keep in mind is that we are to be at Divine Services on time. The church is the House of God. Reverence and good manners are required at all times. No irreverent or irrelevant conversations should go on in the Narthex or in the church proper. There are certain times during the Divine Services when no one should be moving about, or entering the church, or being seated at a pew. Wherever a person happens to be at these moments, he or she should stop and stand reverently until the proper moment to be seated. These times are: 1. During the Doxology, while the priest is censing. 2. During the Small Entrance - The procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gospel. 3. When the priest censes the Altar, icons, and congregation throughout the Divine Liturgy. 4. During the reading of the Epistle and Gospel. 5. During the sermon. 6. During the Great Entrance - the procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gifts. 7. During the recitation of the Creed and Lord s Prayer (Our Father). 8. During the Consecration of the Holy Gifts. (Se Imnoumen) 9. During Holy Communion. To receive Holy Communion please come up the middle aisle, children first, and return to your seats via the side aisles. 10. When receiving any sacrament of the church, use your baptismal/chrismation name. 11. During any special services such as Memorials or blessing of the loaves, special doxologies, etc. The general rule is that whenever the priest is outside the Holy Altar either with the censer or for giving a blessing, there should be no movement in the church. Also, we remind everyone that we should attend the Divine Liturgy and all services of divine worship from the beginning. Please remember that Parish Council members are obligated to maintain order and decorum in the church during worship. Please try to understand us. Cooperate with us. 15 Εκκλησιαστική Εθιμοτυπία Όταν είμαστε στην εκκλησία, όλοι έχουμε την ευθύνη να κρατήσουμε την σωστή ευπρέπεια και ατμόσφαιρα του ναού. Το πρώτο πράγμα που πρέπει να θυμόμαστε είναι ότι πρέπει να είμαστε στην εκκλησία στην ώρα μας. Η εκκλησία είναι ο οίκος του Θεού. Η ευλάβεια και οι σωστοί τρόποι απαιτούνται πάντα. Δεν πρέπει να γίνεται άσχετη ή ασεβής συζήτηση στον Νάρθηκα ή μέσα στον ναό. Υπάρχουν μερικές στιγμές στις ακολουθίες που κανένας δεν πρέπει να κινείται, η να μπαίνει στην εκκλησία, η να κάθεται. Όπου και να βρίσκεται ο άνθρωπος σε αυτές τις στιγμές, πρέπει να σταματήσει και να σταθεί όρθιος με σεβασμό έως την κατάλληλη στιγμή να καθίσει. Αυτές οι στιγμές είναι, 1. Στην Δοξολογία, όταν ο ιερέας θυμιάζει. 2. Στην Μικρή Είσοδο, στην διάρκεια της πομπής του Ευαγγελίου με τα ιερόπαιδα και τον ιερέα. 3. Όταν ο ιερέας θυμιάζει το Ιερό, τις εικόνες, και τον κόσμο στην διάρκεια της Θείας Λειτουργίας. 4. Στην ανάγνωση του Αποστόλου και του Ευαγγελίου. 5. Στο κήρυγμα. 6. Στην Μεγάλη Είσοδο, στην διάρκεια της πομπής των Αγίων Δώρων με τα ιερόπαιδα και τον ιερέα. 7. Στην απαγγελία του Πιστεύω και της Κυριακής Προσευχής (Πάτερ Ημών). 8. Στην Αναφορά (καθαγίαση) Των Αγίων Δώρων (Στον ύμνο Σε Υμνούμεν). 9. Στην Θεία Κοινωνία. Για Θεία Κοινωνία, παρακαλείσθε να έρχεστε από τον μεσαίο διάδρομο (πρώτα τα παιδιά) και να επιστρέψετε στις θέσεις σας από τους πλαϊνούς διαδρόμους. 10. Όταν λαμβάνουμε ένα Μυστήριο της Εκκλησίας, χρησιμοποιούμε το βαπτιστικό μας όνομα. 11. Σε ειδικές ακολουθίες, σαν τα μνημόσυνα, τις αρτοκλασίες, ειδικές δοξολογίες, κλπ. Ο γενικός κανόνας είναι, όταν ο ιερέας είναι εκτός του Ιερού, είτε με το θυμιατό ή για να δώσει ευλογία, δεν γίνεται κίνηση στην εκκλησία. Επίσης, θυμίζουμε όλους ότι πρέπει να είμαστε στην Λειτουργία και σε όλες τις ακολουθίες από την αρχή. Μη ξεχνάτε ότι τα μέλη του συμβουλίου είναι υποχρεωμένα να κρατήσουν την τάξη και την ευπρέπεια στην εκκλησία. Ζητάμε την κατανόηση σας. Συνεργαστείτε μαζί μας. Οι ιερείς είναι εδώ να υπηρετήσουν. Η συνεργασία σας στην παρακολούθηση αυτών των κανονισμών θα μα βοηθήσει πολύ στο έργο μας να προσφέρουμε τη βοήθεια μας σε όλες τις πνευματικές ανάγκες σας. 15

God put the wiggle and curiosity in children; don t feel you have to suppress it. All are welcome! Sit somewhere where it is easier for your little ones to see and hear what is going on - even if that means you sit at the front. They tire of seeing the backs of others heads. We know how hard it is to have small children in Liturgy. Please don t be discouraged. We love you and want you here. Quietly explain the Liturgy to your children: The Small Entrance The Gospel (the Good News) coming into the world The Epistle and Gospel Readings Our message for the day The Sermon/Homily The clergy speaks about the Bible readings, the Saints, and the Holy Days The Offering (Anaphora) Bowing to our King and offering Him our gifts, that He may change them into His Body and Blood and offer them back to us 16

17 CHILDREN IN THE DIVINE LITURGY AT ST DEMETRIOS GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH Holy Communion Christ is in us and we are in Him Sing the hymns, pray, and voice the responses with the chanters and the choir. Children learn liturgical behaviour by copying you. Remember that we are here to worship Christ. If you have to temporarily leave the service with your child, feel free to use our crying room, but please come back when your child calms down. As Christ said, Let the children come to Me. Also, we encourage you to visit the church with your children on days when there is no service, so you can explain to them a few things about the church. To the members of our Community: The presence of children is a gift to the Church and a reminder that our Community is growing. Please welcome our children and give a smile of encouragement to their parents. Remember that the way we welcome children in the Church directly affects the way they respond to the Church, to Christ, and to one another. Let them know they are home! It is up to us to either encourage our children and young families or chase them away. 17

20 Thoughts from our Parish Priest Beloved in Christ, From God every family in heaven and on earth is named. (Ephesians 3:15) These words of St. Paul make it unequivocally clear that apart from God there is no genuine family and moreover, apart from our Creator and Saviour, there is no lasting name in heaven for each of us. The Family Tree that really matters is the one whose foundation is Jesus Christ, whose members, regardless of their roots, find their true identity in Him and whose legacy rests, not on the generational worth of a family name based on human status or wealth, but rather on the unsurpassable love and mercy of the Incarnate God, Who shed His priceless blood and rose from the dead to reinstate us, by grace, as the children of His Kingdom. People in our contemporary times hunger for connections because, quite frankly, the family unit has suffered irreparable dysfunction and breakdown: For decades we have witnessed the rise in gangs, which are really nothing more than an unhealthy, rebellious replacement for a non-existent home life, and a place where young people find an identity and a sense of belonging. In recent years, Facebook has become the new means of creating familial bonds with long-lost relatives and friends although, to be honest, these relationships that we tended to move on from over the years often replace the real time spent with immediate family members who live in the same household, resulting in a new form of family breakdown. Just what is family? The true family is not the one personified on television, nor is it one of the diverse family units defined in current social science textbooks or by secular politicians: Rather, the family that God established is the blessed union of a man and a woman, grounded in mutual love and a common faith in the Trinitarian God. Within the Orthodox Marriage Ceremony, there are many prayers asking that God bless the newlyweds with a household of children, whether this occurs naturally, through adoption or through taking a child in need under their wings: In other words, creating a family is an essential part of God s design of marriage. It is also significant to note that the Orthodox Sacrament of Marriage is intended to take place before the Holy Altar for when the crowning of the couple occurs, it is an expression that the newlyweds are to take home with them this holy experience and grace, creating the little church of their family, as an extension of the larger Eucharistic community of which they are part. Bringing God s Kingdom into the home is defined most concretely by the practices of prayer, fasting, the reading of Holy Scriptures, and nurturing the family to participate regularly in the Sunday Liturgy and Great Feasts of the Church. This month provides us yet another opportunity to offer our prayerful gratitude to God for the blessing of our family and, equally so, our church family. There is an integral link between the Stewardship of Family and our Stewardship as Baptized Members of our Church Family those with whom we worship, fellowship and serve the community. Ι invite all of you to take the time to pause and give thanks to God and furthermore, to respond as good and faithful Stewards of the families He blesses us with in our homes, in our church and in the greater community... and wholeheartedly for His glory! 20

21 Αγαπητοί εν Χριστό, Thoughts from our Parish Priest Τούτου χάριν κάμπτω τὰ γόνατά μου πρὸς τὸν πατέρα, ἐξ οὗ πᾶσα πατριὰ ἐν οὐρανοῖς καὶ ἐπὶ γῆς ὀνομάζεται (Προς Εφεσίους 3.15) Αυτές οι λέξεις του Αγ. Παύλου φανερώνουν χωρίς αμφιβολία ότι δεν υπάρχει αληθινή οικογένεια ξεχωριστά από τον Θεό, και εξάλλου ξεχωριστά από τον Δημιουργό και Σωτήρα μας δεν υπάρχει αιώνιο όνομα στην Βασιλεία Του για τον καθένα μας. Το οικογενειακό δέντρο που μετράει είναι αυτό που έχει ως ρίζα τον Ιησού Χριστό, του οποίου μέλη, ανεξάρτητα από την καταγωγή τους, βρίσκουν την αληθινή ταυτότητα τους σε Αυτόν, και η κληρονομία τους βρίσκεται όχι στο οικογενειακό όνομα που παραδίνεται από γενεά σε γενεά το οποίο βασίζεται σε ανθρωπινό πλούτο η κοινωνική θέση, αλλά μάλλον είναι βασισμένο στην αξεπέραστη αγάπη και έλεος του ενσαρκωμένου Θεού, ο Οποίος έχυσε το πολύτιμο αίμα Του και αναστήθηκε εκ νεκρών για να μας παλινορθώσει με τη χάρη Του ως τέκνα της Βασιλείας Του. Άνθρωποι στη σημερινή εποχή μας πεινάνε για συνδέσεις και ανθρωπινές επαφές γιατί οι οικογένεια υποφέρει μια ανεπανόρθωτη δυσλειτουργία και βλάβη. Για δεκαετίες βλέπουμε την αύξηση σπειρών και συμμοριών, οι οποίες δεν είναι τίποτα άλλο παρά μια ανθυγιεινή, επαναστατική αντικατάσταση για μια ανύπαρκτη οικογενειακή ζωή και ένα μέρος οπού νεαροί βρίσκουν τη ταυτότητα τους και την αίσθηση ότι ανήκουν σε κάτι. Σε πρόσφατα χρόνια το Facebook, Instagram, και άλλα μέσα ηλεκτρονικής επικοινωνίας είναι τα νέα μέσα δημιουργίας μιας οικογενειακής ένωσης με συγγενείς και φίλους. Αυτές οι ενώσεις, για να είμαστε ειλικρινείς, πολλές φορές αντικατασταίνουν τον πραγματικό χρόνο που περνάμε με τα άμεσα μέλη της οικογένειας που ζούνε στο ίδιο σπίτι, με αποτέλεσμα ενός καινούργιου τρόπου της κατάρρευσης της οικογένειας. Και τι είναι η οικογένεια; Η αληθινή οικογένεια δεν είναι αυτή που προσωποποιείται στην τηλεόραση, ούτε αυτή η ποικίλη οικογενειακή μονάδα που διδάσκεται στα σημερινά σχολικά επιστημονικά βιβλία και από κοσμικούς πολιτικούς. Μάλλον, η οικογένεια που καθιέρωσε ο Θεός είναι η ευλογημένη ένωση ενός άνδρα και μιας γυναίκας, βασισμένη σε κοινή και αμοιβαία αγάπη και κοινή πίστη στον Τριαδικό Θεό. Μέσα στην Ορθόδοξη Ακολουθία του Γάμου, βρίσκουμε πολλές προσευχές προς τον Θεό να ευλογήσει τους νιόπαντρους με μια οικογένεια με παιδιά, αν και αυτό γίνει με φυσικούς τρόπους η με υιοθεσία. Με άλλα λόγια, δημιουργώντας μια οικογένεια είναι ένα ουσιώδης μέρος του σχέδιου του Θεού για τον γάμο. Είναι επιπλέον σημαντικό να σημειώσουμε ότι το Ορθόδοξο Μυστήριο του Γάμου παίρνει μέρος μπροστά από το Ιερό, γιατί το στεφάνωμα του ζευγαριού είναι μια έκφραση ότι οι νιόπαντροι θα πάρουν σπίτι μαζί τους αυτή την άγια εμπειρία και χάρη, δημιουργώντας μια μικρή εκκλησία της οικογένειας τους ως μια επέκταση της μεγαλύτερης ευχαριστιακής κοινότητας στην οποία ανήκουν. Φέρνοντας τη Βασιλεία του Θεού στο σπίτι περιγράφεται και ορίζεται πιο συγκεκριμένα με την οικογενειακή πράξη της προσευχής, της νηστείας, και της ανάγνωσης της Αγίας Γραφής, και ανατρέφοντας και καλλιεργώντας την οικογένεια να πάρει μέρος τακτικά στην Θεία Λειτουργία της Κυριακής και στις μεγάλες Γιορτές της Εκκλησίας. Αυτός ο μήνας είναι ακόμα μια ευκαιρία να προσφέρουμε την ευλαβή ευγνωμοσύνη μας στον Θεό για τις ευλογίες Του προς την οικογένεια μας και εξίσου την εκκλησία μας. 22 Church Iconography Program Dear Members and Friends, our Iconography project is moving well. What is left is the north wall of the church (Old Testament figures), as well as the upper row of icons for the Iconostasis. All the remaining icons will be installed, but some of them have yet to be donated. The original prices of the icons have not changed. The price for an individual saint (lower half of the north wall) is $2,500. The price of the icons on the iconostasis is $2,500. Remember you can also make a general donation toward the iconography of the church, as many people have done already. Another option is donating an icon as a group. How quickly two years have passed by, and now it is time to pass the baton to a new board to continue in our mission to offer love and hope to our fellow man. There is a place for everyone and your talents are needed. We encourage all members to consider running for a position on the board and sharing your gifts and expertise with our community. On Sunday, October 7th Philoptochos hosted a farewell luncheon for Fr. Kosta. It was a memorable and well attended send off. The Ladies prepared a delicious meal to honour Father. The presidents on behalf of the community gave heartfelt wishes. Father thanked the community and asked for our prayers. The attendees, under the direction of our Chanter, chanted Lord, grant many years to him who blesses and sanctifies us. We will miss you very much Fr. Γρηγορα περασαν δυο χρονια εντατικης δραστηριοτητας και εφθασε ο καιρος να περασει η σκυταλη σε νεα μελη για την συνεχεια της Αποστολης μας στην προσφορα της αγαπης προς τον πλησιον. Ολα τα μελη παρακαλουντε να προσελθουν οπως επισης και νεα μελη, ολες οι κυριες ειναι ευπροσδεκτες να αναλαβουν μια θεση. Ολες μας διαθετουμε τα αναλογα προσοντα και στην Φιλοπτωχο μας δινεται η ευκαιρια να δημιουργουμε, προς δοξαν Θεου και το καλο της Κοινοτητας μας και οχι μονο. Ζησαμε στιγμες μεγαλης συγκινησης αλλα και χαρας μαζι. Ευχηθηκαν οι Προεδροι, ευχηθηκε και ο πατερ και ζητησε τις προσευχες μας. Ο Θεος παντα μαζι σου πατερ μας θα προσευχομαστε για σενα οπως και συ για μας. Θα μας λειψεις πολυ και η αγαπη μας θα σε συνοδευει στη νεα σου ενορια παντοτε! 28 Greek School On October 28th, the Greek school celebrated OXI day. The celebration is an opportunity to recognize the heroism of the Greek troops during the Greco- Italian war of Our students presented poems and skits that spoke to this important event in our history and shared it with the community at large in the main hall of the church. Thank you to all the parents volunteers that prepared and donated food for the celebration. I would like to also thank the Ladies of Philoptochos for giving up their Sunday coffee fundraiser for the Greek school for this event. As mentioned in the previous bulletin, the fundraising goes to assist with the school s expenses including classroom supplies and teacher salaries. October was also when we had to say good bye to Tina (Fotini) Katsikeros- Fulcher. Tina served as the instructor for Yiayia Gogo for 3 years and recently transitioned the position to our new instructor, Soraya-Philia Mirkhosravi. I would like to thank Tina for her time with the Greek school. She was a valuable member of our team and will be greatly missed. 38 Moments with the Elders In today's feature we will introduce a remarkable woman of faith and great alms giver. Chatzina Styliani-Filothei Tsagaraki. "Blessed are those who are chosen Lord to have their memory remembered from generation to generation". There are people whose relationship with the Lord is so unique and they are entrusted in dreams or visions treasures of tremendous blessings, with the mission to maintain and elevate their holiness because of purity of heart and shining love become chosen vessels. Such is Gerontissa Tsagaraki. She treasured a cross that had inherited from an aunt and she witnessed many, many wonders because of it. The people loved and respected this woman of God. Near the convent of prophet Elias in Roustika Rethymnon in the island of Crete by the chapel of St. Filothei the Athenian is buried since 1975 at the age of 97. She was a mother of four children, among them Fr. Stavros Tsagarakis priest of Saints Anargyroi in the Perivolia Rethymnon. Her life was sealed with many miracles attributed to the cross. The first and most remarkable was the resurrection of her son Stavros now a priest. The child was few months old when fell from the veranda and died. The doctor signed the death certificate and the funeral was in place when the miracle took place. After that many pilgrims came to receive the blessing of the cross and were comforted. After her husband's death she entered the monastic life, although she was advanced in years. She was gifted with spiritual gifts according to the testimonies of the locals. On one occasion a pious woman visited her very bitter because her husband would not give her the money for the bus which was 200 drachmas without her pleading and begging for it. She had a visit with the Gerontissa, but mentioned nothing about the cruelty of her husband. Upon leaving the Gerontissa, Filothei handed her an envelope addressed to her husband. She handed him the envelope and to his astonishment found 200 drachmas enclosed. May she intercede for our beautiful Community always! With the love of Christ. Debby Vlahos 38

39 Λιγες Στιγμες με τους Πατερες Σημερα θα μιλησουμε για την αξιομακαριστη Χατζινα Στυλιανη-Φιλοθεη Μοναχη που διηλθε τον βιον της ευργετουσα. "Μακαριοι ους εξελεξω και προσελαβου Κυριε,και το μνημοσυνον αυτων εις γενεαν και γενεαν". Υπαρχουν ανθρωποι που η σχεση τους με τον Θεο εχει ενα ιδιαιτερο χαρακτηριστικο: σε ονειρα η οραματα ο ουρανος τους εμπιστευεται ιερους θησαυρους με την αποστολη να τους διαφυλαξουν αλλα και να τους αναδειξουν. Η αγιοτητα τους ειναι ιδιοτυπη και οι ανθρωποι τους αγαπουν και τους σεβονται επειδη εχουν καθαρη και φωτεινη καρδια γεματη αγαπη και γιαυτο γινονται "σκευη εκλογης" και παιρνουν στα χερια τους ιερα κειμηλια. Μια τετοια περιπτωση ειναι και η Γεροντισσα Τσαγκαρακη. Κοντα στο μοναστηρι του προφητη Ηλια στα Ρουστικα Ρεθυμνης διπλα στο εκκλησακι της Αγιας Φιλοθεης της Αθηναιας ειναι θαμμενη απο το 1975 ετων 97 η μακαριστη Γεροντισσα κατοχος του ιστορικου και θαυματουργου Σταυρου. Υπηρξε μητερα τεσσαρων παιδιων μεταξυ αυτων και του π.σταυρου Τσαγκαρακη εφημεριου Αγιων Αναργυρων στο προαστιο Περιβολια του Ρεθυμνου, ο οποιος φυλλασει τωρα το κειμηλιο αυτο κληρονομια της μητερας του απο μια θεια της. Η ζωη της σφραγιστηκε απο πληθος θαυματων, το σπουδαιτερο η ανασταση του μικρου Σταυρου που επεσε απο την ταρατσα και σκοτωθηκε σε ηλικια λιγων μηνων. Ο θανατος πιστοποιηθηκε απο γιατρο και οριστηκε η κηδεια του. Μετα απο αυτο το θαυμα αμετρητοι προσκυνητες ζητησαν την ευλογια του Σταυρου. Απο μαρτυριες ντοπιων γνωριζουμε οτι ειχε το διορατικο χαρισμα. Καποια ευσεβης γυναικα την επισκεφθηκε πικραμενη και πολυ πληγωμενη γιατι με μεγαλη δυσκολια και αγωνα ο συζυγος της εδωσε τις 200 δραχμες για το εισητηριο. Ειπαν διαφορα με την Γεροντισσα αλλα τιποτα για το θεμα με τον αυταρχικο συζυγο. Φευγοντας η Γεροντισσα της εδωσε ενα φακελο για τον αντρα της. Οταν εκεινος το ανοιξε με μεγαλη του εκπληξη ειδε οτι ειχε μεσα 200 δραχμες. Ας μεσιτευει για την ομορφη μας Κοινοτητα παντοτε! Με την αγαπη του Χριστου μας. Ντεμπυ Βλαχου 39
