GREEK COMMUNITY OF WINNIPEG Dear Greek Community Supporter, Thank you for your previous membership to the Greek Community of Winnipeg. With the start of a new year, we are asking you to renew your membership for Without your past contributions we would not have the Greek Community as we know it today. That s why it is so important to renew to keep the community alive. Your prior membership has enabled us to accomplish so much. In particular, this year we have: Organized and supported many community events including many youth gatherings, Cretan Night, the Greek Pavilion for Folklorama, Mother s Day Brunch, and upcoming Greek School Christmas Concert, and the New Year s Eve Party. Our Church has been able to remain open, providing spiritual nourishment and education to Orthodox Christians. We re proud of what we ve been able to do and we could not have done it without you! This coming year, 2017, marks an important milestone for our community: the 100- year anniversary of the Greek Community of Winnipeg. We look forward to celebrating with new and bigger events celebrating our community s anniversary. We want to build on our prior event successes and community spirit by reaching out to more people this year. Our facilities are an important meeting place and home for spiritual and cultural rejuvenation. Your membership fees allow us to support all of our initiatives. Membership also means you have a voice and a ballot in all community elections. Please renew your membership today in the following ways: The most preferred way to renew your membership is through automatic debit renewal. Every year, you can arrange to pay automatically via your bank. This is a preferred method because it is easy to set up, there are very low banking fees for us to pay, and the membership payment occurs automatically every year. You can also choose to pay via automatic credit card payments, however this method has higher banking fees and is therefore costly to the community. Please speak with the office administrator to set up automatic payment. Other payment methods also accepted are: cheque, cash, and regular credit or debit payments. 6 COMMUNITY BOARD ELECTIONS The date of the Community Board Elections is December Members who have served for 3 years on the Community Board of Directors will be stepping down at the end of this year. We are looking for motivated members of our Community to fill the empty seats and run in the December election for the Community Board of Directors. Those eligible to run must: Desire to contribute their time and talents, and work as part of a team for the betterment of our Community! Be eighteen (18) years of age or more and have been a resident of Canada for a continuous period of Two (2) years. Be a member in good standing of the Church in the current year.* Be a person who has lived and abides by the canons and teachings of the Greek Orthodox faith. All interested persons are asked to put their name forward to Mr. Chris Argiriou or the church office. Please contact Mr. Argiriou or any Board member if you have any questions. * Member in Good Standing - means an active member who has paid the dues prescribed by the metropolis and the parish each year for Two (2) consecutive years. image source: 6

If you already have not done so, please renew your Church membership and consider an Automatic recurring monthly donation by contacting the office at Spread over the 400 families in our Community, we would exceed our operating costs IF we received: $ 2.15 per day from each family - Less than the cost of a fancy drink at Tim Horton's. $ 15 per week from each family - Less than a dinner for 1 person at a restaurant. $ 65 per month from each family - Less than the average cable & internet bill. $ 784 per year from each family - Less than a family gym membership. There are no Memorials (Please see the Calendar in the middle of the Bulletin for all liturgical services.) 12

13 Church Etiquette When attending Divine Services we all have the responsibility of maintaining proper decorum and atmosphere in the church. The very first thing to keep in mind is that we are to be at Divine Services on time. The church is the House of God. Reverence and good manners are required at all times. No irreverent or irrelevant conversations should go on in the Narthex or in the church proper. There are certain times during the Divine Services when no one should be moving about, or entering the church, or being seated at a pew. Wherever a person happens to be at these moments, he or she should stop and stand reverently until the proper moment to be seated. These times are: 1. During the Doxology, while the priest is censing. 2. During the Small Entrance - The procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gospel. 3. When the priest censes the Altar, icons, and congregation throughout the Divine Liturgy. 4. During the reading of the Epistle and Gospel. 5. During the sermon. 6. During the Great Entrance - the procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gifts. 7. During the recitation of the Creed and Lord s Prayer (Our Father). 8. During the Consecration of the Holy Gifts. (Se Imnoumen) 9. During Holy Communion. To receive Holy Communion the faithful should come forth from the side aisles and exit via the centre aisle to return to their pew. 10. When receiving any sacrament of the church, use your baptismal/chrismation name. 11. During any special services such as Memorials or blessing of the loaves, special doxologies, etc. The general rule is that whenever the priest is outside the Holy Altar either with the censer or for giving a blessing, there should be no movement in the church. Also, we remind everyone that we should attend the Divine Liturgy and all services of divine worship from the beginning. Please remember that Parish Council members are obligated to maintain order and decorum in the church during worship. Please try to understand us. Cooperate with us. 15 Εκκλησιαστική Εθιμοτυπία Όταν είμαστε στην εκκλησία, όλοι έχουμε την ευθύνη να κρατήσουμε την σωστή ευπρέπεια και ατμόσφαιρα του ναού. Το πρώτο πράγμα που πρέπει να θυμόμαστε είναι ότι πρέπει να είμαστε στην εκκλησία στην ώρα μας. Η εκκλησία είναι ο οίκος του Θεού. Η ευλάβεια και οι σωστοί τρόποι απαιτούνται πάντα. Δεν πρέπει να γίνεται άσχετη ή ασεβής συζήτηση στον Νάρθηκα ή μέσα στον ναό. Υπάρχουν μερικές στιγμές στις ακολουθίες που κανένας δεν πρέπει να κινείται, η να μπαίνει στην εκκλησία, η να κάθεται. Όπου και να βρίσκεται ο άνθρωπος σε αυτές τις στιγμές, πρέπει να σταματήσει και να σταθεί όρθιος με σεβασμό έως την κατάλληλη στιγμή να καθίσει. Αυτές οι στιγμές είναι, 1. Στην Δοξολογία, όταν ο ιερέας θυμιάζει. 2. Στην Μικρή Είσοδο, στην διάρκεια της πομπής του Ευαγγελίου με τα ιερόπαιδα και τον ιερέα. 3. Όταν ο ιερέας θυμιάζει το Ιερό, τις εικόνες, και τον κόσμο στην διάρκεια της Θείας Λειτουργίας. 4. Στην ανάγνωση του Αποστόλου και του Ευαγγελίου. 5. Στο κήρυγμα. 6. Στην Μεγάλη Είσοδο, στην διάρκεια της πομπής των Αγίων Δώρων με τα ιερόπαιδα και τον ιερέα. 7. Στην απαγγελία του Πιστεύω και της Κυριακής Προσευχής (Πάτερ Ημών). 8. Στην Αναφορά (καθαγίαση) Των Αγίων Δώρων (Στον ύμνο Σε Υμνούμεν). 9. Στην Θεία Κοινωνία. Για να λάβουν τη Θεία Κοινωνία, οι πιστοί έρχονται από το πλάι και επιστρέφουν στις θέσεις τους από το μεσαίο διάδρομο. 10. Όταν λαμβάνουμε ένα Μυστήριο της Εκκλησίας, χρησιμοποιούμε το βαπτιστικό μας όνομα. 11. Σε ειδικές ακολουθίες, σαν τα μνημόσυνα, τις αρτοκλασίες, ειδικές δοξολογίες, κλπ. Ο γενικός κανόνας είναι, όταν ο ιερέας είναι εκτός του Ιερού, είτε με το θυμιατό ή για να δώσει ευλογία, δεν γίνεται κίνηση στην εκκλησία. Επίσης, θυμίζουμε όλους ότι πρέπει να είμαστε στην Λειτουργία και σε όλες τις ακολουθίες από την αρχή. Μη ξεχνάτε ότι τα μέλη του συμβουλίου είναι υποχρεωμένα να κρατήσουν την τάξη και την ευπρέπεια στην εκκλησία. Ζητάμε την κατανόηση σας. Συνεργαστείτε μαζί μας. Οι ιερείς είναι εδώ να υπηρετήσουν. Η συνεργασία σας στην παρακολούθηση αυτών των κανονισμών θα μα βοηθήσει πολύ στο έργο μας να προσφέρουμε τη βοήθεια μας σε όλες τις πνευματικές ανάγκες σας. 15

18 Thoughts from our Parish Priest Christ as an Immigrant The birth of Christ is described by the Evangelist Matthew in a way that indicates the fate of the Messiah of the world: As soon as He is born He migrates, following a divine command, to Egypt. He is an immigrant Who changed countries to escape danger, just as in the Old Testament Abraham, Jacob and his children did, who migrated to Egypt by divine command. The newborn Christ, as soon as He enters the world, knows persecution and hostility on the part of the rulers. The main representative of this hostility is King Herod, whose brutality is known by the historians of his time. One could say that the birth of Christ is a prelude to the death of Christ. His entire journey through life in this world is a cross of love and sacrifice; a cross on which He will ultimately defeat the demonic power of evil in order for the light of the resurrection to shine. While it may seem cosmic destructive forces dominate over humanity, their prevalence is apparent and temporary, because within history the redemptive plan of the divine economy takes place, which no one can subvert or defeat. The brutality of Herod, manifested by the inhumane slaughter of infants in Bethlehem and the surrounding area, could not have stopped the work of the newborn Messiah from beginning, since He was under the protective care of God. The reference to the slaughter of infants, for which the Gospels do not specify a number, are the beginning of the martyrs of the faith. The excessive number of our liturgical tradition, estimated at 14,000 infants shows in advance the many martyrs of Christianity. This number is excessive for little Bethlehem, even with its surroundings, which is why the symbolic character we received above is necessarily incumbent. That the Providence of God the Father protects the Divine Infant from the threatening fury of the secular ruler, that He is guided to a safe place and is informed beforehand of the possibility of a return to His homeland gives an element of optimism in facing the risks of life. We each probably have our own personal story of a shocking experience that the hand of God protected us from and saved us from certain death, either leading the footsteps of a friend or protector to our aid, or illuminating us to act properly, or deal with someone another way. This leads to our great distrust or rationalism to being crushed before the indestructible power of this experience. Besides the Magi were warned by God to "return to your homeland another way" (Matt. 2:12), showing that God enlightens people to behave wisely and avoid unnecessary risks. When we are at a dead end, we should think there is another way. The optimistic message of the Gospel reading for the Sunday after the Nativity of Christ, is that despite the apparent triumph of evil, hatred and atrocities in the history of mankind, eventually the power of love and goodness wins. That God was born as a man in history is proof of the loving concern of God to redeem man from the demonic forces of destruction and annihilation. Professor John Karavidopoulos 18

19 Thoughts from our Parish Priest Ο Χριστός ως Μετανάστης Η Γέννηση του Χριστού περιγράφεται από τον ευαγγελιστή Ματθαίο κατά τρόπο που δείχνει προκαταβολικά την τύχη του Μεσσία μέσα στον κόσμο: Μόλις γεννιέται μεταναστεύει, κατόπιν θεϊκής εντολής, στην Αίγυπτο. Είναι μετανάστης που αλλάζει πατρίδα για να αποφύγει τον κίνδυνο, όπως στην Παλαιά Διαθήκη μορφές σαν τον Αβραάμ, τον Ιακώβ και τα παιδιά του που υπακούοντας σε εντολή του Θεού μεταναστεύουν σε άλλη χώρα, ο τελευταίος μάλιστα με τα παιδιά του στην Αίγυπτο. Γενικότερα, ο νεογέννητος Χριστός, ευθύς ως εισέρχεται στον παρόντα κόσμο, γνωρί ζει την καταδίωξη και εχθρότητα εκ μέρους των αρχόντων. Η εχθρότητα αυτή βρίσκει τον κύριο εκπρόσωπό της στον βασιλιά Ηρώδη, η θηριωδία του οποίου μας είναι γνωστή και από τους ιστορικούς της εποχής του. Θα μπορού σε να πει κανείς ότι ο θάνατος του Χριστού προανακρούεται ήδη από τη στιγμή της γεννήσεώς του. Η όλη πορεία του μέσα από τον κόσμο θα είναι ένας σταυρός αγάπης και θυσίας ένας σταυρός στον οποίο θα νικηθεί οριστικά η δαιμονική δύναμη του κακού για να λάμψει το φως της αναστάσεως. Όσο κι αν φαίνεται ότι οι κοσμικές καταστροφικές δυνά μεις κυριαρχούν πάνω στην ανθρωπότητα, η επικράτησή τους είναι φαινομενική και προσωρινή γιατί βασικά μέσα στην ιστορία πραγματοποιείται το λυτρωτικό σχέδιο της θείας οικονομίας, το οποίο κανείς δεν μπορεί να ανα τρέψει ή να ματαιώσει. Η θηριωδία του Ηρώδη, που εκδηλώθηκε με την απάνθρωπη σφαγή των νηπίων στη Βηθλεέμ και στη γύρω περιοχή, δεν ήταν δυνατό να στα ματήσει ήδη από την αρχή του το έργο του νεογέννητου Μεσσία, που βρισκόταν κάτω από την προστατευτική πρόνοια του Θεού. Η μνεία της σφαγής των νηπίων, που δεν καθορίζεται στα Ευαγγέλια ο αριθμός τους, αποτελεί την απαρχή των μαρτύρων της πίστεως. Ο υπερβολικός αριθμός της λειτουργικής παραδόσεως, 14 χιλιάδες δείχνει προκαταβολικά τους πολλούς μάρτυρες του Χριστιανισμού. Ο αριθμός αυτός είναι υπερβολικός για τη μικρή Βηθλεέμ, έστω και με τα περίχωρά της, γι αυτό και ο συμβολικός χαρακτήρας του που δεχτήκαμε παραπάνω είναι εκ των πραγμάτων επιβεβλημένος. Το ότι η πρόνοια του Θεού Πατέρα προστατεύει το θείο βρέ φος από την απειλητική μανία του κοσμικού άρχοντα, το ότι το καθοδηγεί σε ασφαλές μέρος και το προειδοποιεί τελικά για τη δυνατότητα επιστροφής στην πατρίδα του αποτελεί ένα στοιχείο αισιοδοξίας για την αντιμετώπιση των κινδύνων της ζωής. Καθένας μας διαθέτει ίσως από την προσωπική του ιστορία κάποιο συγκλονιστικό βίωμα που το χέρι του Θεού ενήργησε προστατευτικά πάνω του και τον έσωσε από βέβαιο θάνατο, είτε οδηγώντας τα βή ματα ενός φίλου και προστάτη προς βοήθειαν, είτε φωτί ζοντας τον ίδιο να ενεργήσει σωστά, είτε με κάποιον άλλο τρόπο. Κι η μεγαλύτερη δυσπιστία ή ο ορ θολογισμός συντρίβονται μπροστά στην ακατάλυτη δύνα μη του προσωπικού βιώματος. Άλλωστε το ότι οι μάγοι ειδοποιηθέντες από τον Θεό, «δι άλλης οδού ανεχώρησαν εις την χώραν αυτών» (Ματθ.2,12) δείχνει ότι υπάρχουν τρόποι που φωτίζει ο Θεός τους ανθρώπους να φέρονται συνετά και να αποφεύγουν τους άσκοπους κινδύνους. Όταν βρισκόμαστε σε αδιέξοδα, ας σκεπτόμαστε ότι υπάρχει και «η άλλη οδός». Το αισιόδοξο μήνυμα που απευθύνει η ευαγγελική διήγηση της Κυριακής μετά τη Γέννηση του Χριστού στον σημερινό αναγνώστη είναι ότι παρά τον φαινομενικό θρίαμβο του κακού, του μίσους και της θηριωδίας μέσα στην ιστορία των ανθρώπων, τελικά επιβάλλεται η δύναμη της αγάπης και της καλοσύνης. Ότι ο Θεός γεννιέται σαν άνθρωπος μέσα στην ιστορία αποτελεί ακριβώς μια απόδειξη για το στοργικό ενδιαφέρον του Θεού να λυτρώσει τον άνθρωπο από τις δαιμονικές δυνάμεις της καταστροφής και του αφανισμού. 20 Church Iconography Program Beloved in Christ, In this bulletin you will find the program of our iconography, as well as a sample of what the remaining icons will look like. The top layer of the icons is the New Testament icons, which will be put up on the right side of the church (as you face the Altar). The bottom layer is the Old Testament icons, which will be put up on the left side of the church. The theme is Promise and Fulfilment, and it depicts the promises given by God in the Old Testament, and the parallel, or fulfilment of each promise in the New Testament. These icons will be installed on the top halves of the side walls of our church. We are also installing icons of individual saints along the lower halves of the side walls of the church. There is no program for these icons, meaning that each donor can choose the Saint to be depicted (as long as it hasn t been donated already). I can give you some suggestions if you d like. Finally, we are changing the small icons on the iconostasis (temblon) of our Altar, as the current ones have been aged and darkened. For a list of those icons, please contact me directly. The price for a scriptural scene (upper half of the walls) panel is $9,500. The price for an individual saint (lower half of the walls) is $2,500. The price of the icons on the iconostasis is $2,500. You can also make a general donation toward the iconography of the church, as many people have done already. Another option is donating an icon as a group. Isaiah 9:6 So many beautiful and inspiring songs, poems and stories have been written over the years to celebrate and share the good news of the birth of our Savior. The main message of Jesus birth is to fill us with joy and peace. Our beloved Fr. Anthony Mavromaras, of blessed memory, who faithfully served at St. Demetrios for many years had wished for every heart to be a manger for Jesus. May the star of Bethlehem shine in our hearts this Christmas and always. Once again this year the Bells will be ringing from November 20th until December 18th for our annual Joy of Christmas campaign. This money will be helping families in our community during the blessed Christmas season. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. 23 Η Σελίδα της Φιλοπτώχου Αμετρητοι υμνοι, καλλαντα και ποιηματα εχουν γραφτει για τα Χριστουγεννα και δικαιολογημενα, γιατι το Θειο Βρεφος μας γεμιζει χαρα και ειρηνη. Χαρα των Χριστουγεννων εχουμε ονομασει το "καμπανακι" απο τις 20 Νοεμβριου μεχρι 18 Δεκεμβριου καλωντας την αγαπη σας αυτες τις Κυριακες να προσφερει οτι εχετε ευχαριστηση οπου οι εισπραξεις θα διατεθουν να φερουν χαρα σε αδελφους μας. Οι εκλογες του Νοεμβριου ανεδειξαν νεο Συμβουλιο και με μεγαλη μας χαρα εχουμε νεα μελη που παρ'ολο οτι ειναι απησχολημενες και με καρριερα δεχθησαν ευχαριστως να προσφερουν στην Φιλοπτωχο. 26 Sunday School MOBILE ORTHODOX CHILDREN S BOOK LIBRARY Our parish is the first in Canada to introduce an Orthodox children s book library to bring beautiful but expensive (and in some cases hard-to-find) children s books to our children. Through the generous donations of both parishioners and non-parishioners alike, we have procured a library cart with over 100 books from board books to chapter books for our middle school readers. Some fiction, some fact, all Orthodox! We have been very blessed to have several authors donate copies of their books to our parish library, stretching our donor dollars further and notable publishers have offered us deep discounts as well. We are continuing our quest for new Orthodox books for our library, and welcome all donations and suggestions of books we might include. Please see Victoria Marckx if you would like to donate to our library fundraiser. BUY BEAUTIFUL ORTHODOX BOOKS FOR YOUR CHILDREN or grandchildren, nieces, nephews, godchildren, and anyone else who loves to read. This month we will be sending home order forms with all children. Parents can purchase the Orthodox books featured for their children simply by returning the order form with a cheque made payable to St. Demetrios. The books will be ordered and brought to the Church for distribution. The proceeds will go to the Children s book library fund. Books make wonderful gifts for Christmas, name days, birthdays, or any other occasion. Books should arrive during the first week of Advent, in order to be a perfect complement to the Advent Fast. 26

The objectives for this new event, in the form of a charity gala, are to: a) help "mainstream" the Hellenic Community's contributions in our society; b) produce a larger philanthropic impact than we currently make; c) generate higher revenue for charitable causes and AHEPA scholarships; and d) serve as the new venue for awarding AHEPA scholarships. Winnipeg AHEPA and Winnipeg Harvest, the chosen philanthropic cause for 2017, are partnering for the inaugural Hellenic Gala which aims to: a) advance philanthropic causes in Winnipeg and Manitoba b) award AHEPA scholarships (scholarships have been awarded since 1990) c) entice your taste buds with authentic Greek food, to be enjoyed along with dancing and entertainment. Winnipeg Harvest - Fighting Hunger and Feeding Hope - is a non-profit, community based organization that is a food distribution & training centre. Their goals are to a) collect and share surplus food with people who are hungry; b) offer training and learning opportunities to help people step up and out of poverty; and c) focus attention on hunger within our community and move towards long-term solutions.
