Human papillomavirus frequency in oral and oropharyngeal cancer in Greece. Romanitan et al, Anticancer Res. 2008 13% of tumours were HPV-positive and the majority of these were HPV-16-positive. Of the tonsillar cancer samples, 43% were HPVpositive 17% collected between 1992-1998 and 50% collected between 2000-2007 were HPV-positive.
Impact of HPV in Oropharyngeal Cancer Marklund L. and Hammarstedt L. J Oncol. 2011 The Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) recognizes HPV as a risk factor for oropharyngeal cancer, and accumulating molecular and epidemiological data now show that high-risk types of HPV are responsible for a subset of oropahryngeal cancer

J Oncol. 2011 concurrent chemotherapy Human papillomavirus and survival of patients with oropharyngeal cancer. Ang KK, et al. New England Journal of Medicine. 2010 no significant difference in overall survival between a concomitant boost accelerated fraction regimen of radiotherapy and a standard fractionation regimen when combined with concurrent high-dose cisplatin for HPVpositive patients
HPV-positive tumours in oropharynx improved survival regardless of treatment strategy The debate today is whether the intense therapy is too aggressive in this group of patients since they show a superior survival regardless of treatment strategy
The Epidemic of HPV-Associated Oropharyngeal Cancer Is Here: Is It Time to Change Our Treatment Paradigms? Sturgis EM, Ang KK., J Natl Compr Canc Netw, 2011 oropharyngeal cancers are increasing in incidence despite declining prevalence of smoking and in direct opposition to a decreasing incidence of all other Η &Ν cancers. An epidemic of human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated oropharyngeal cancers seems to account for these incidence trends. Important demographic, behavioral, and prognostic characteristics define this unique population. Changes in prevention, diagnosis, evaluation, staging, and treatment are needed. Data are currently insufficient to change treatment paradigms

Oropharyngeal cancer epidemic and human papillomavirus. Ramqvist T, Dalianis T. Emerg Infect Dis. 2010 Accumulating evidence that HPV status and overexpression of p16, and having never smoked, is of benefit. Future prospective clinical studies, including diagnostics of HPV, molecular and immunologic profiles, history of smoking, cessation of smoking during therapy, and effects of different treatment modalities and their side effects on quality of life, will be of benefit for personalized treatment.
