Development of a Greek Community within Charleswood Care Centre Goal: to develop a grouping of Greek Residents within the care centre. Ideally, with a large enough group there would be the opportunity to re-design one unit for the Greek Residents to include an adjoining lounge and dining area. Considerations: Menu and diet with opportunities to enjoy traditional Greek foods Celebration of significant Greek Orthodox events: Christmas, Easter and Annunciation of the Virgin Mary (August 15th) Opportunities for the priest from the Greek Orthodox Church to visit and provide services if desired. Opportunities for members of the Greek Community to visit with several Residents together in a group setting. Opportunities for members of the Greek community to come and provide entertainment and share other aspects of the culture with other Residents and staff to help the larger care centre population understand the Greek culture more fully. Tours for members of the Greek community to become familiar with the care centre. All of the above considerations are possible now within our current set-up and structure. This would help to build the sense of understanding and unity with the Greek community. Next steps: Members of the Seniors Group to visit the care centre to become more familiar with the structure and set up. They will be the main contact for the day to day planning going forward. Contacts: Christos Argiriou, Greek Community board member: primary contact for any questions or concerns. Shelley Ireland, Social Worker from the care centre: primary contact to discuss placement of residents at the care centre and to provide tours. Linda Sundevic, Executive Director (5501 Roblin Boulevard, Charleswood Care Centre 204-833-3660): primary contact for the development of a grouping of Residents and discussions of a partnership to develop common and dining space (construction). If you have a loved one currently in a care facility or are looking into future residency, and you are interested in the opportunity of residence within a Greek unit at the Charleswood Care Centre, please contact Mr. Chris Argiriou via the Church office at 204-889-8723. 9

Church Etiquette When attending Divine Services we all have the responsibility of maintaining proper decorum and atmosphere in the church. The very first thing to keep in mind is that we are to be at Divine Services on time. The church is the House of God. Reverence and good manners are required at all times. No irreverent or irrelevant conversations should go on in the Narthex or in the church proper. There are certain times during the Divine Services when no one should be moving about, or entering the church, or being seated at a pew. Wherever a person happens to be at these moments, he or she should stop and stand reverently until the proper moment to be seated. These times are: 1. During the Doxology, while the priest is censing. 2. During the Small Entrance - The procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gospel. 3. When the priest censes the Altar, icons, and congregation throughout the Divine Liturgy. 4. During the reading of the Epistle and Gospel. 5. During the sermon. 6. During the Great Entrance - the procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gifts. 7. During the recitation of the Creed and Lord s Prayer (Our Father). 8. During the Consecration of the Holy Gifts. (Se Imnoumen) 9. During Holy Communion. To receive Holy Communion the faithful should come forth from the side aisles and exit via the centre aisle to return to their pew. 10. When receiving any sacrament of the church, use your baptismal/chrismation name. 11. During any special services such as Memorials or blessing of the loaves, special doxologies, etc. The general rule is that whenever the priest is outside the Holy Altar either with the censer or for giving a blessing, there should be no movement in the church. Also, we remind everyone that we should attend the Divine Liturgy and all services of divine worship from the beginning. Please remember that Parish Council members are obligated to maintain order and decorum in the church during worship. Please try to understand us. Cooperate with us. Τhe priests are here to serve you. Your cooperation in following these regulations will help us greatly in offering you assistance in all your spiritual needs. 11

Thoughts from our Parish Priest Why does the world reject the Cross of Christ? The Cross reminds us that the meaning of life is to be found in sacrifice. Especially when it is stressed by everyone that we should find our rights and defend them in every way, that society and the world despises and marginalizes those who prefer to forgive those who hurt them and not repay them with evil, and even though they come out losers as to all sorts of interests, the way of the Cross seems difficult. When people see the satisfaction the passions give them and it is these which give pleasure and beauty in life, to give up one's own will and follow Christ to the Cross is a rebuke to the person who does not believe. Because non-believers in the Cross want to justify themselves for the darkness in which they choose to live, they reject those who choose the path that leads to the Light of life. The Cross also reminds us that there is a standard to which we are called to imitate. We usually only have ourselves as our standard or what embodies our ideals. Whether it is to have material goods, access to knowledge and information, conditions for life and the big question: "Why should others have more than me?" These are the ideals of the world which embody those people who are famous, and make us stray from the path. The Cross reminds us of the unique standard of humility, that God became man. The Giver of Life tasted the bitterness of death. The sign of the Cross reminds us that we have an eternal and unique standard and it calls us to follow Him. Finally, the Cross reminds us that our existence should seek eternity. Our life does not end at the time of death. For us to live our journey towards the resurrection and immortality, we must remember the commandments of God and strive to actualize them. This path seems very backward. People seek freedom of the self. We don't want anyone over us. We consider the commandments of God to be relational, especially love. And whatever we don't understand or is contrary to our carnal minds we reduce and erase them from our lives. There is no point in a person hiding their identity or trying to beautify themselves only to be liked. That we are Christians, today and in every era, means that we are called to follow the path of the Cross. To proclaim it in our words and deeds. Without giving in to pressure. Without adjusting to the mentality of the world. But with clarity. Oriented towards sacrifice, towards following our standard who is Christ and keeping the commandments of the Gospel. This is the true path and way of the Church. And in a time when all has collapsed by illusions, it is worth rejoicing in our selfconsciousness by choosing once again the course of the Crucified. We know it is accompanied by the Resurrection. But it needs courage to be able to overcome reluctance, illusions and regrets. And the Lord will be with us. 18

Thoughts from our Parish Priest 19

Church Iconography Program Beloved in Christ, In this bulletin you will find the program of our iconography, as well as a sample of what the remaining icons will look like. The top layer of the icons is the New Testament icons, which will be put up on the right side of the church (as you face the Altar). The bottom layer is the Old Testament icons, which will be put up on the left side of the church. The theme is Promise and Fulfilment, and it depicts the promises given by God in the Old Testament, and the parallel, or fulfilment of each promise in the New Testament. These icons will be installed on the top halves of the side walls of our church. We are also installing icons of individual saints along the lower halves of the side walls of the church. There is no program for these icons, meaning that each donor can choose the Saint to be depicted (as long as it hasn t been donated already). I can give you some suggestions if you d like. Finally, we are changing the small icons on the iconostasis (temblon) of our Altar, as the current ones have been aged and darkened. For a list of those icons, please contact me directly. The price for a scriptural scene (upper half of the walls) panel is $9,500. The price for an individual saint (lower half of the walls) is $2,500. The price of the icons on the iconostasis is $2,500. You can also make a general donation toward the iconography of the church, as many people have done already. Another option is donating an icon as a group. If you have any questions, please feel to contact me. In Christ, Fr. Kosta Tsiolas New Testament icons Old Testament icons 20

If you would like to make a donation towards one of the icons that are still available, please contact the church office immediately!! All icons need to be ordered and completed before the iconographer arrives to install them. 21

Sunday School Programs for Kids & Adults: Ages 3-18 years (Kindergarten to Grade 12) When: Sundays, after Holy Communion 11:45-12:30 p.m. in the Manitoba Hellenic Cultural Centre classrooms. REMINDER TO ALL PARENTS: Sunday School registration will begin this month for the coming year which begins Sunday, September 11. This year's registration forms will be a little different from last years, so please, everyone must fill them out, even if you have done so in previous years. *************************************************************************************** SUNDAY SCHOOL IS OPEN TO ALL THOSE WHO WILL TURN THREE ON OR BEFORE SEPTEMBER 1, 2016. Our classes are mixed grade classes and go from pre-k all the way to University level, and are taught in English, although some Greek language hymnography may be taught. CLASSES ARE FREE TO ALL! Please note that upon registration you will receive a handbook explaining some of the different programs we will be having this year. Victoria Marckx will always be available to discuss questions, comments, or concerns any parents may have about the curriculum, or about the individual needs of the students. *************************************************************************************** ATTENTION CRAFTERS: The Sunday School is still looking for donations of fabric and sewing materials that can be used to make costumes for our younger children (grades Pre-K - Grade 3). If you have extra fabric from projects, or can volunteer some time to sew, we would love your help! We are looking only for colours that would have been common in biblical times, so please, no florals (stripes are OK) or bright colours...think iconography, for a guide. *************************************************************************************** FOR ALL SINGERS: Do you love to sing? Can you sing some basic hymnography in Greek and English? Do you like to teach small children to sing? If so, then please consider volunteering for our Sunday School Music Days! Once a month or so, we will be having a day devoted to the hymns of our church, with each grade learning to sing the beautiful hymns of the church that are appropriate for their grade level. We would like each class to have a special "music teacher: who can visit them on these days, and teach them hymns which range from the simplest Trisagion to 24

Sunday School festal hymnography, depending on age. You only feel confident teaching the simplest hymns? NO PROBLEM! We can use you with our younger children! Accomplished cantor? PLEASE...we can use your skills also with our high school and university students! Let's fill our halls and our church with music! (we need anywhere from 3-4 teachers, so, please, contact us to help) ************************************************************************************** ATTENTION PARENTS/GRANDPARENTS/GODPARENTS: This year will mark the beginning of a Sunday School Parent-Teacher Association. Please consider joining! The time commitment will be small, but it is vitally important that the teachers have parent contacts and feedback. As of this writing, none of the teachers have any children, so we need some parent input! Please help us to provide the best programming for the children in our parish... their future concerns us all. ************************************************************************************** Wondering just WHAT your students are learning in Sunday School? What questions they ask? Wonder no more... the Sunday School will have a monthly newsletter to help keep parents, godparents, an grandparents (and anyone else who is interested) in touch with what our students are doing and thinking about. The first issue will be out next month! May God keep us all under his care and watchful eye. Rev. Father Konstantinos Tsiolas Parish Priest Victoria Marckx Director, Sunday School Websites to visit: http://www.goarch.org/ http://gocanada.org/ 25

ST. DEMETRIOS NOW HAS A MOBILE CHILDREN'S ORTHODOX BOOK LIBRARY!!! WHAT IS IT??? Our library is a rolling library cart with Orthodox books for children of all ages. As of this writing, we have 60 books, mostly picture books, and are looking to purchase many more. HOW WILL WE USE IT??? The cart will visit each Sunday School class each week. Children will have a few minutes of "library time" to choose their books, fill out the library check out card, and can then take their books home to share with the family for two weeks. Parents with children younger than three are welcome to check books out for their children as well. Teachers will have an extra wealth of extra-curricular books to make the classroom more fun! Children can sign up for reading contests with prizes once the number of books gets to a level that supports this. CAN WE BUY ANY OF THE BOOKS??? Twice a year (in October and in February) Order forms will be sent home with the students so parents can order books in time for Advent or Lenten reading. Special arrangements have been made with publishers for bulk purchases. WHAT IF I HAVE A FAVOURITE ORTHODOX CHILDREN'S BOOK THE LIBRARY DOESN'T HAVE? We'd love to hear about it, and we'd love to purchase it if it's in print. HOW CAN WE HELP BUILD THE LIBRARY??? Thanks to the very very generous donations from authors, parishioners, non-parishioners, and others, we were able to get the cart, the paper goods (library pockets, cards, due date slips, and stamps) and the first sixty books in record time. We need to purchase many more books to fill our cart! Donations are requested of money only (please no used books without talking to Victoria Marckx or to Fr. Kosta first to see if the item is appropriate for our library). We request monetary donations rather than people individually ordering their favourite books because the Church has discount arrangements with publishers for bulk purchases and can purchase more than individuals can for the same money. All amounts will help us with our purchasing, so please be as generous as you can. MAY I MAKE MEMORIAL DONATIONS OR DONATIONS HONOURING SOMEONE IN MY FAMILY: Yes! Absolutely! We have crafted donation book plates both of "In honour of" and "In Memory of". Donating books to the library would be a wonderful way to honour those we remember and a great way to celebrate the birthday or name day of a child, parent, or grandparent. The library depends on your support. We all know that ordering Orthodox books for our children can cost as much as $50 per book, once customs duties and currency conversion are taken into account. Please be as generous as you can so that all our children can access the wealth of Orthodox children's literature that is out there, waiting to be read. 26

PLEASE DONATE NOW to our Saint Demetrios Orthodox Children s Library All the Finest Orthodox Children s Books in Print! Of all holy works, the education of children is the most holy. ~Saint Theophan the Recluse Please contact Victoria Marckx for details: 204-586-6406 or victoriamarckx@gmail.com 27
