Church Etiquette When attending Divine Services we all have the responsibility of maintaining proper decorum and atmosphere in the church. The very first thing to keep in mind is that we are to be at Divine Services on time. The church is the House of God. Reverence and good manners are required at all times. No irreverent or irrelevant conversations should go on in the Narthex or in the church proper. There are certain times during the Divine Services when no one should be moving about, or entering the church, or being seated at a pew. Wherever a person happens to be at these moments, he or she should stop and stand reverently until the proper moment to be seated. These times are: 1. During the Doxology, while the priest is censing. 2. During the Small Entrance - The procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gospel. 3. When the priest censes the Altar, icons, and congregation throughout the Divine Liturgy. 4. During the reading of the Epistle and Gospel. 5. During the sermon. 6. During the Great Entrance - the procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gifts. 7. During the recitation of the Creed and Lord s Prayer (Our Father). 8. During the Consecration of the Holy Gifts. (Se Imnoumen) 9. During Holy Communion. To receive Holy Communion the faithful should come forth from the side aisles and exit via the centre aisle to return to their pew. 10. When receiving any sacrament of the church, use your baptismal/chrismation name. 11. During any special services such as Memorials or blessing of the loaves, special doxologies, etc. The general rule is that whenever the priest is outside the Holy Altar either with the censer or for giving a blessing, there should be no movement in the church. Also, we remind everyone that we should attend the Divine Liturgy and all services of divine worship from the beginning. 11

Thoughts from our Parish Priest On the Vespers of Forgiveness With Forgiveness Vespers, which is celebrated on Cheesefare Sunday evening, Great Lent begins. This solemn period of repentance is offered to us as a way of life. A way of life that brings forgiveness from God, as well as from our brethren. It is very characteristic what is written: Forgive (συγχωρῶ) means to move forward (χωρῶ) with God and with others. With forgiveness we do not only receive a simple absolution, which implies a legalistic concept of salvation. Rather, forgiveness with God is an ocean of divine goodness that erases human sins. And so in its full reality, forgiveness becomes communion with Christ and His Kingdom. During the course of our journey, let us mutually support one another in our weaknesses, let us mutually forgive one another by forgetting our differences, let us mutually protect one another to reach our destination. Essentially we should live to what God calls us, as a unique unity with the forgiveness that we offer to others. Let us now kneel, therefore, before the icon of Christ and the Panagia, our clergy (for me, my brother priests), as well as our brethren, and let us ask for their forgiveness, since they have much to forgive us for. And let us forgive one another. Forgiveness does not begin when peace, calmness and joy begin to reign; forgiveness begins the moment we take on each others shoulders the burdens of one another, and the first and heaviest load is the personhood of another, what that person is, and not what that person does or does not do. If necessary let us carry one another as Christ carried His Cross, as a type of torment, pain and death, but let us not leave someone behind under any circumstance without our forgiveness. 16

Thoughts from our Parish Priest Ο Εσπερινός της Συγχωρήσεως/Συγνώμης Με τον εσπερινό της συγνώμης, που τελείται το βράδυ της Κυριακής της Τυρινής, η Εκκλησία του Χριστού μας ανοίγει την Μεγάλη Τεσσαρακοστή. 17

Thoughts from A Local Parish It s strange how twenty dollars seems like such a large amount when you donate it to church, but such a small amount when you go shopping. It s strange how 2 hours seem so long when you re at church, and how short they seem when you re watching a good movie. It s strange that you can t find words to say when you re praying, but you have no trouble thinking what to talk about with a friend. It s strange how difficult it is to read one chapter of the Bible, but how easy it is to read a popular novel. It s strange how everyone wants front-row-tickets to concerts, but they want to sit in the last row at Church. It s strange how we need to know about an event for Church 2-3 weeks before the day so we can include it in our agenda, but we can adjust it for other events in the last minute? Ιt s strange how difficult it is to learn a fact about God and share it with others, but it s easy to repeat gossip. It s strange how we believe everything that magazines and newspapers say, but we question the words in the Bible? 18

Church Iconography Program Beloved in Christ, In this bulletin you will find the program of our iconography, as well as a sample of what the remaining icons will look like. The top layer of the icons is the New Testament icons, which will be put up on the right side of the church (as you face the Altar). The bottom layer is the Old Testament icons, which will be put up on the left side of the church. The theme is Promise and Fulfilment, and it depicts the promises given by God in the Old Testament, and the parallel, or fulfilment of each promise in the New Testament. These icons will be installed on the top halves of the side walls of our church. We are also installing icons of individual saints along the lower halves of the side walls of the church. There is no program for these icons, meaning that each donor can choose the Saint to be depicted (as long as it hasn t been donated already). I can give you some suggestions if you d like. Finally, we are changing the small icons on the iconostasis (temblon) of our Altar, as the current ones have been aged and darkened. For a list of those icons, please contact me directly. The price for a scriptural scene (upper half of the walls) panel is $9,500. The price for an individual saint (lower half of the walls) is $2,500. The price of the icons on the iconostasis is $2,500. You can also make a general donation toward the iconography of the church, as many people have done already. Another option is donating an icon as a group. If you have any questions, please feel to contact me. In Christ, Fr. Kosta Tsiolas New Testament icons Old Testament icons 20

Church Iconography Program The iconographer will be coming this spring/summer to install the icons. If you would like to make a donation towards one of the icons that are still available, please contact the church office immediately!! All icons need to be ordered and completed before the iconographer arrives to install them. 21

Sunday School Programs for Kids & Adults: You are invited Ages 3-18 years (Kindergarten to Grade 12) When: Sundays, after Holy Communion 11:45-12:30 p.m. in the Manitoba Hellenic Cultural Centre classrooms. As we move toward Great Lent our Sunday School children will be given special Lenten Passports, a new program to help them better understand and more richly experience the wonderful part of our Church Year that is Great Lent. The Passports will be arriving soon!!! Please make every effort to take your child to all the Lenten services during the week, not only on Sundays, so that they can experience the richness of the season, and earn their passport stamps. In addition, the children will learn about missions, and will receive empty coin boxes to take home and return filled to church after Pascha. These donations will be sent to OCMC, the Orthodox Christian Mission Center, to be used to fund Orthodox missions of teaching and healing throughout the world. The Sunday School will also be planning a mini-retreat, and a Godparents Sunday event, both to be held in the upcoming months. We stress again the importance of having children attend both the full Divine Liturgy and Sunday School. If anyone has any questions about the Sunday School curriculum, our special events, or wishes to volunteer to help out, please contact Victoria Marckx at 204-586-6406, or via e-mail at victoriamarckx@gmail.com. Cypriot Association CYPRUS ECONOMY IS BOUNCING BACK Submitted by the Cypriot Association of Manitoba Just three years after a major crisis, Cyprus is enjoying the first fruits of the painful and ongoing adjustment. The economy is slowly growing again, the fiscal deficit is being reined in, foreign investment is starting to reappear, while privatization programs and the potential of offshore energy are bringing back the smiles. After a thorough review of the island s progress, the International Monetary Fund has recently confirmed that the reform program remains a success: economic activity in 2015 has been better than expected and fiscal outturns are running ahead of projections, liquidity in the core banking system has continued to improve and the prospects for resolving nonperforming loans are improving. Nevertheless, the Cyprus Government cautions that the emphasis must now be placed on advancing the structural reform agenda, primarily on tax administration, the management of fiscal risks and public administration reform. It should be noted that critical growth enhancing reforms, including the public administration reform and a privatization road map, have already been initiated. The Ministry of Finance claimed an economic growth of 0.4% in 2015 and predicts a growth of 1.4 percent this year. It s a far cry from the three years (2012 through 2014} when the economy shrank by a cumulative 9.8 percent. Finance Minister Harris Georgiades called 2015 growth sufficiently satisfactory and ruled out additional taxes. On the contrary, this year s budget calls for a 5 percent increase in spending with gradual and careful steps to ease the tax burden. Unemployment remains high but inflation is low and the fiscal deficit continues to fall (from 5.8 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2012 to a projected 0.2 percent in 2016}. Looking ahead, Cyprus hopes to kick-start its energy industry thanks to a sizeable offshore gas discovery. There is a great opportunity for cooperation and collaboration with neighboring countries with a vision to transform the natural gas that lies in the Mediterranean in the same way the founding fathers of the European Union have transformed coal and steel into a common factor of stability and peace for countries that were previously enemies. Reunification of the island is under discussion with support from the United States and the European Union. Economists speak of a potential peace dividend that could almost double the aggregate GDP by 2035. Main drivers would be tourism, construction, financial services, trade, transport, and gas exports. Many Cypriot developers claim that this is the time to invest in Cyprus as prices have started rising already and next year might be too late. 32

These costumes are worn by our community groups for dance performances, as well as at events while representing our community. We would like to expand this collection, particularly the costumes for our youth. Currently, we have a limited number of costumes that will fit this age group, and we have an increasing interest from the kids to wear costumes during their dance performances. If you have a costume that you would like to donate to the community for use by community groups, such as Kefi and Greek School, please drop them off in the church office with the Office Administrator. All sizes and regions are welcome! If you require a costume to be picked up, or would like to sponsor the purchase of a child s Greek folk costume, please contact Agapi Katrakis at 204-588-4870 or agapim@gmail.com.
