EPISTLE: St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 6:16-18; 7:1 Brethren, you are the temple of the living God; as God said, "I will live in them and move among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Therefore come out from them, and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch nothing unclean; then I will welcome you, and I will be a father to you, and you shall be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty." Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, and make holiness perfect in the fear of God. GOSPEL: 2nd Sunday of Luke The Gospel According to Luke 6:31-36 The Lord said, "As you wish that men would do to you, do so to them. If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again. But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the selfish. Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful." In today s Gospel reading from the Sermon on the Mount, the Lord says to us: And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise. And He continues: But if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. We see here that the Lord is merciful and compassionate. Yes He loves enemies, loves sinners, loves everyone, regardless of who each person is. And when you receive the love of God, you change. You become as God is. If at the end of the day certain people are not saved, it does not mean that God did not love them. Rather, they would not receive the love which God offered. Love makes you transcend yourself. When you put yourself and your self-love at the center of your life, you 2
can t love your neighbour. And if you offer him something, you do it with ulterior motives so that you ll receive something in return. The status-quo of self-worship lives and reigns within us. Say whatever you want about needing to love your neighbour or even your enemies, or about needing to sacrifice for others. Whatever you might say, your ego still lives and rules within you. In fact, your actions will be self-centered and self-interested. If this fortress where the ego rules supreme is not torn down, along with the entire rebellion of a person against God, then he cannot truly love. It is not for nothing that the Apostle Paul says: Ιt is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me (Gal. 2:20). A man feels, a man lives, a man experiences Christ reigning within him. He does not rule himself, and his ego does not dominate him. This is exactly what the Lord says: If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself (Matt. 16:24). If we are honest and truthful, if we desire to see and speak the truth, then none of us should have difficulty saying: Even the best things I do always begin from self-interest and from a self-centeredness. Every Friday 3:00pm-7:00pm On behalf of Father Gregory and the Parish Council we would like to take a moment and THANK all the volunteers who have dedicated their time and talent to help put together this great fundraiser. This fundraiser helps support the mission and operating expenses of the church. Bring your family, friends and neighbors and spend the evening with good friends, great PAREA while supporting this fundraiser. For advertising your business in the Church bulletin please contact MaryAnn 727-868-5911 at the church office! PRAYER PRAY EVERY Morning and Evening at a Minimum Remember to make your prayer life one that is a firm rule and not something that is done occasionally or sporadically. It must be done each day morning and evening at a minimum. You need to commit to follow your rule each and every day. Think about certain personal hygiene tasks such as brushing your teeth that you do each day out of habit. You don t forget to do them each day. Your prayer needs to become a habit as strong as these. Prayer must become a daily habit that you never forget. Prayer is essential for the health of our soul Just like the hygiene activities that we do for the health of our body. According to the Greek Orthodox Church, every day of the year is dedicated to the memory of at least one (usually more than one) saint or martyr. If someone is named after a saint, then there is a big celebration on his or her name day. Happy Name day to all those that celebrate October 1st 4

MEMORIAL SERVICE - +ΙΕΡΟ ΜΝΗΜΟΣΥΝΟ+ + 2 year memorial service for Irene Skyllas given by her family + Memorial Service for the St. George Choir members that have fallen asleep in the Lord Trisagion memorial service + Magnolia M. Taktekos passed on September 21, 2017 May their Memory be Eternal! Αιωνία η μνήμη αυτών! Did you know this about Memorial Services and Kolyva : Memorial services may not be chanted from the Saturday of Lazarus through the Sunday of Thomas on any Feast days of the Lord or any Feast days of the Theotokos. Koliva is boiled wheat with a combination of some or all of the following ingredients: powdered sugar, almonds, ground walnuts, sesame seeds, cinnamon, pomegranate seeds, raisins, anise, parsley and more. Koliva is made for memorials, typically on Saturdays of the Souls, and according to different traditions, the day of a Funeral, the 40 th day after death, 3 rd month, 6 th month, 9 th month, annually, and even sometimes just on big anniversaries only, such as 5 years, 10 years, etc. You may also have Kolyva on the funeral day but ONLY boiled wheat no sweetness is added. Sweetness is added on the 40day memorial and thereafter. In John s Gospel we find this quote, Christ said, Unless a wheat grain falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. (John 12:24) As Orthodox Christians we are awaiting the 2 nd Coming and the General Resurrection of the dead, through Christ we have Life! But, remembering the memory of our deceased beloved ones is an opportunity to pray for the souls of the departed as well as a way to help us heal from the death. Memorials when planning your memorial service please make sure that you contact the office and give the names of the reposed so that Father Gregory has them in advance. In addition, if you would like KOLYVA we ask that you contact Katina Kollias 727-849-0544 or 1-352-277-6545 directly as she prepares the Kolyva. 8

The Holy Protection of the Theotokos One of the most beloved holidays in the Orthodox calendar is the Protection of the Mother of God. The Slavic people celebrate this holiday on October 1. The Greek tradition celebrates it on October 28. The tradition holds that during the tenth century, the city of Blachernae in Constantinople was threatened by a barbarian invasion. Saint Andrei Yurodivyi (Andrew of Constantinople), his disciple Saint Epiphanius, and a group of people saw the Mother of God, St. John the Baptist, and several other saints and angels during a vigil in the church. This same church housed several of the relics of the Virgin Mary, including her robe, veil and part of her belt. These were brought from Palestine during the fifth century. During this vision, the Theotokos came to the center of the church, knelt down and prayed for a long time. Her face was drowned in tears. Afterwards, she removed her veil and spread it over the people as a sign of protection. After this appearance, the danger passed and the city was spared the bloodshed of an invasion. The icon of the Holy Protection shows the feast in which the Theotokos is standing above the faithful with her arms stretched open in prayer and draped with a veil. Angels are on both sides of her. In most icons, Saint Andrew and his disciple Epiphanius are in the lower right. St. Epiphanius is wearing a tunic under his cloak and seems astonished at this miraculous appearance. St. Andrew is dressed only in a cloak. Below the Theotokos, in the center of the icon, is a young man with a halo dressed in a deacon s sticharion. In his left hand he is holding an open scroll with the text of the Kontakion for the Nativity in honor of the Mother of God. This is St. Romanus the Melodist, the famous hymnographer whose feast is celebrated on October 1. His choir is with him as is the Emperor Leo the Wise, the Empress, and the Patriarch of Constantinople. On my Greek Orthodox calendar, the October 28th is also marked OXI Day. What does this mean? In the past few years, this feast has been recognized as a thanksgiving for the deliverance of the Greek nation from the Italian invasion of 1940. It is a national holiday in Greece known as Ochi Day or No Day, in reference to the response of the Greek leader Metaxas to Mussolini s ultimatum. I love the icon of this feast. It is so beautiful and allows us to again recognize and pay tribute to our Lady the Theotokos. She is indeed protection for all of us and this is a great day to commemorate her.
