ΑΠΟΣΤΟΛΟ: Κυριακή προ Χριστού Γεννήσεως Απoστ. Ανάγν.: Εβρ. 11, 9-10,32-40 Με πίστη εγκαταστάθηκε στη γη που του υποσχέθηκε ο Θεός, ξένος σε άγνωστη χώρα, ζώντας σε σκηνές με τον Ισαάκ και τον Ιακώβ, που κι αυτοί ήταν κληρονόμοι της ίδιας υπόσχεσης. Κι αυτό, γιατί περίμενε την πόλη που θα είχε στέρεα θεμέλια και που αρχιτέκτονας και δημιουργός θα ήταν ο Θεός. Χρειάζεται να συνεχίσω; Δεν θα με πάρει ο χρόνος να διηγηθώ για το Γεδεών, το Βαράκ, το Σαμψών, τον Ιεφθάε, το Δαυίδ,, το Σαμουήλ και τους προφήτες. Με την πίστη κατατρόπωσαν την βασιλεία, επέβαλαν το δίκαιο, πέτυχαν την πραγματοποίηση των υποσχέσεων του Θεού, έφραξαν στόματα λεόντων, έσβησαν τη δύναμη της φωτιάς, διέφυγαν τη σφαγή,έγιναν από αδύνατοι ισχυροί, ανδείχτηκαν ήρωες στον πόλεμο, έτρεψαν σε φυγή εχθρικά στρατεύματα, γυναίκες ξαναπήραν πίσω στη ζωή τους ανθρώπους τους, κι άλλοι βασανίστηκαν στο θάνατο,χωρίς να δεχτούν την απελευθέρωσή τους, γιατί πίστευαν ότι μπορούσαν να αναστηθούν σε μια καλύτερη ζωη. Άλλοι δοκίμασαν εξευτελισμούς και μαστιγώσεις, ακόμη και δεσμά και φυλακίσεις. Λιθοβολήθηκαν, πριονίστηκαν, πέρασαν δοκιμασίες, θανατώθηκαν με μάχαιρα, περιπλανήθηκαν ντυμένοι με προβιές και κατσικίσια δέρματα, έζησαν σε στερήσεις, υπέφεραν καταπιέσεις, θλίψεις και κακουχίες, κόσμος δεν ήταν άξιος να χει τέτοιους ανθρώπους,πλανήθηκαν σε ερημιές και βουνά,σε σπηλιές και σε τρύπες της γης. Όλοι η παραπάνω, παρά την καλή μαρτυρία της πίστης τους, δεν πήραν ότι τους υποσχέθηκε ο Θεός, ο οποίος είχε προβλέψει καλύτερο για μας, έτσι ώστε να μη φτάσουν εκείνοι στην τελειότητα χωρίς εμάς. EPISTLE: The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 11:9-10; 32-40 BRETHREN, by faith Abraham sojourned in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. For he looked forward to the city which has foundation, whose builder and maker is God. And what more shall I say? For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets - who through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, received promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched raging fire, escaped the edge of the sword, won strength out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight. Women received their dead by resurrection. Some were tortured, refusing to accept release, that they might rise again to a better life. Others suffered mocking and scourging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were tempted, they were killed with the sword; they went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, ill-treated - of whom the world was not worthy - wandering over deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth. And all these, though well attested by their faith, did not receive what was promised, since God had foreseen something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect. ΕΥΑΓΓΕΛΙΟ: Κυριακή προ Χριστού Γεννήσεως, Ευαγγ. Ανάγνωσμα: Ματθαίου 1, 1-25 Γενεαλογικός κατάλογος του Ιησού Χριστού, απογόνου του Δαβίδ, ο οποίος ήταν απόγονος του Αβραάμ. Ο Αβραάμ εγέννησε τον Ισαάκ, ο Ισαάκ εγέννησε τον Ιακώβ, ο Ιακώβ εγέννησε τον Ιούδα και τους αδελφούς του. Ο Ιούδας εγέννησε τον Φαρές και τον Ζαρά με τη Θάμαρ. εγέννησε τον Σαδώκ, ο Σαδώκ τον Αχίμ και ο Αχίμ τον Ελιούδ ο Ελιούδ εγέννησε τον Ελεάζαρ, ο Ελεάζαρ τον Ματθάν, ο Ματθάν τον Ιακώβ, και ο Ιακώβ εγέννησε τον Ιωσήφ τον άντρα της Μαρίας. Από τη Μαρία γεννήθηκε ο Ιησούς, ο λεγόμενος Χριστός. Από τον Αβραάμ ως τον Δαβίδ μεσολαβούν δεκατέσσερις γενιές το ίδιο κι από τον Δαβίδ ως την αιχμαλωσία στη Βαβυλώνα, καθώς κι από την αιχμαλωσία στη Βαβυλώνα ως το Χριστό. Η γέννηση του Ιησού Χριστού έγινε ως εξής: Η μητέρα του, η Μαρία, αρραβωνιάστηκε με τον Ιωσήφ. Προτού όμως συνευρεθούν, έμεινε έγκυος με τη δύναμη του Αγίου Πνεύματος. Ο μνηστήρας της ο Ιωσήφ, επειδή ήταν ευσεβής και δεν ήθελε να τη διαπομπεύσει, αποφάσισε να διαλύσει τον αρραβώνα, χωρίς την επίσημη διαδικασία. Όταν όμως κατέληξε σ αυτή τη σκέψη, του εμφανίστηκε στον ύπνο του ένας άγγελος σταλμένος από τον Θεό και του είπε: «Ιωσήφ, απόγονε του Δαβίδ, μη διστάσεις να πάρεις στο σπίτι σου τη Μαριάμ, τη γυναίκα σου, γιατί το παιδί που περιμένει προέρχεται από το Άγιο Πνεύμα. Θα γεννήσει γιο, και θα του δώσεις το όνομα Ιησούς, γιατί αυτός θα σώσει το λαό του από τις αμαρτίες τους». Με όλα αυτά που έγιναν, εκπληρώθηκε ο λόγος του Κυρίου, που είχε πει ο προφήτης: Να, η παρθένος θα μείνει έγκυος και θα γεννήσει γιο, και θα του δώσουν το όνομα Εμμανουήλ, που σημαίνει, ο Θεός είναι μαζί μας. Όταν ξύπνησε ο Ιωσήφ, έκανε όπως τον πρόσταξε ο άγγελος του Κυρίου και πήρε στο σπίτι του τη Μαρία τη γυναίκα του. Και δεν είχε συζυγικές σχέσεις μαζί της ωσότου γέννησε το γιο της τον πρωτότοκο και του έδωσε το όνομα Ιησούς. GOSPEL: Sunday before Nativity The Gospel According to Matthew 1:1-25The book of the Genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, and Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Aram, and Aram the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon, and Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse, and Jesse the father of David the king. So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ fourteen generations. Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit; and her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. But as he considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit; she will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: "Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and his name shall be called Emmanuel" (which means, God with us). When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took his wife, but knew her not until she had borne a son; and he called his name Jesus. 5

Η γενεαλογία και η Γέννηση του Ιησού Χριστού Το ευαγγελικό ανάγνωσμα της Κυριακής πριν από τη μεγάλη εορτή των Χριστουγέννων είναι παρμένο από την αρχή του ευαγγελίου του Ευαγγελιστή Ματθαίου και αναφέρεται στη γενεαλογία του Ιησού Χριστού και στη συνέχεια στην Οικονομία του Θεού για την εκ Πνεύματος Αγίου και Μαρίας της Παρθένου γέννησή Του. Η χρησιμοποίηση των γενεαλογιών κατά την εποχή των ιερών Ευαγγελιστών ήταν σύνηθες φαινόμενο. Στην παρούσα περίπτωση ο Ευαγγελιστής Ματθαίος δεν παραμένει σε μια απλή παράθεση της γενεαλογίας του Ιησού Χριστού, αλλά δίδει σε αυτήν θεολογική διάσταση. Μέσα από την απαρίθμηση όλων αυτών των ονομάτων, που αποτελούν τον κατάλογο των προπατόρων του Ιησού Χριστού, ο Ευαγγελιστής Ματθαίος καταδεικνύει, ότι ο Ιησούς Χριστός είναι όντως ένα υπαρκτό πρόσωπο της ιστορίας. Έτσι δίδει μιαν απάντηση σε όλους εκείνους που κατά καιρούς αμφισβήτησαν ή ακόμα και σήμερα αμφισβητούν την ιστορικότητα του προσώπου του Ιησού Χριστού. Επιπλέον μέσα από τη διήγηση ο αναγνώστης αντιλαμβάνεται ότι ο Ιησούς Χριστός είναι όντως «υιός του Δαβίδ». Σύμφωνα με τις υποσχέσεις του Θεού, όπως αυτές φαίνονται μέσα στις προφητείες της Παλαιάς Διαθήκης, η σωτηρία του κόσμου θα προερχόταν «εκ σπέρματος Δαυίδ». Σε τελική ανάλυση η Γέννηση του Ιησού Χριστού αποτελεί την κατάληξη του προαιώνιου σχεδίου του Θεού για τη σωτηρία και τη λύτρωση του κόσμου. Μετά την παράθεση της γενεαλογίας, ο Ευαγγελιστής Ματθαίος μας αναφέρει σε συντομία τα γεγονότα σχετικά με τη γέννηση του Ιησού Χριστού. Όταν ο Ιωσήφ ο μνήστωρ αντιλήφθηκε ότι η Παναγία, ήταν έγκυος, βασανιζόμενος από λογισμούς και σκέψεις, σκέφτηκε κρυφά να τη διώξει σε τόπο μακρινό. Τις αμφιβολίες του Ιωσήφ διαλύει άγγελος Κυρίου, που παρουσιάστηκε σ αυτόν και του είπε, ότι το παιδί που κυοφορεί η Μαρία είναι καρπός του Αγίου Πνεύματος και ότι το αγόρι που θα γεννηθεί είναι εκείνος που θα φέρει τη σωτηρία στον κόσμο. Έτσι ο Ιωσήφ παρέμεινε με τη Μαρία και στη συνέχεια γεννήθηκε το παιδί και το ονόμασαν Ιησούν, σύμφωνα με την εντολή του Αγγέλου. Στη συνέχεια ο Ευαγγελιστής Ματθαίος τονίζει ότι: «Τούτο δε όλον γέγονεν ίνα πληρωθή το ρηθέν υπό του Κυρίου δια του προφήτου λέγοντος Ιδού η παρθένος εν γαστρί έξει και τέξεται υιόν, και καλέσουσι το όνομα αυτού Εμμανουήλ, ο εστί μεθερμηνευόμενον μεθ ημών ο Θεός». Η ενανθρώπηση δηλαδή του Ιησού Χριστού δε σηματοδοτεί απλά τη λύτρωση του ανθρώπου από την αμαρτία, αλλά την παρουσία του ίδιου του Θεού ανάμεσά μας. Η γέννηση του Ιησού Χριστού και η επί γης δράση Του δεν αποτελεί απλά την απαρχή της αποκατάστασης της ανυπακοής των πρωτοπλάστων, αλλά και την καταλλαγή του ανθρώπου με τον Θεό, τη δυνατότητα δηλαδή της κοινωνίας και πάλι του ανθρώπου με το Θεό. Στο σημείο αυτό έχουμε την εκπλήρωση της μεσσιανικής προφητείας του προφήτη Ησαΐα, ότι δηλαδή η γέννηση του Μεσσία Χριστού θα γίνει από γυναίκα Παρθένο. Η εκπλήρωση των προφητειών της Παλαιάς Διαθήκης δε σημαίνει σε καμία περίπτωση τη δέσμευση του Θεού απέναντι στους ανθρώπους, αλλά αποτελεί ερμηνεία των θαυμαστών γεγονότων που επιτελούνται στον κόσμο και φανερώνουν την παρέμβαση του Θεού μέσα στην ανθρώπινη ιστορία. Ο Ευαγγελιστής Ματθαίος δίδει ιδιαίτερη σημασία στο ότι ο Ιησούς Χριστός γεννήθηκε «εκ Πνεύματος Αγίου» και «εκ της Παρθένου Μαρίας», γεγονός που αποτελούσε αδιαμφισβήτητη πίστη και διδασκαλία της Αποστολικής Εκκλησίας. Προχωρεί μάλιστα και στη θεολογική θεμελίωση του γεγονότος αυτού, αναφέροντας την παρέμβαση του αγγέλου του Θεού προς τον Ιωσήφ, ότι ο Ιησούς Χριστός σαρκώθηκε στη μήτρα της Θεοτόκου «εκ Πνεύματος Αγίου», αλλά και την προφητεία του Ησαΐα, ότι θα γεννηθεί από γυναίκα Παρθένο. Σημαντική είναι εξάλλου και η παρουσία του Ιωσήφ του μνήστορος. Η χρήση του όρου «άνδρας Μαρίας» προκάλεσε πολλές θεολογικές συζητήσεις και έδωσε τροφή σε αιρετικούς κύκλους, που αρνούνται την παρθενία της Θεοτόκου. Σύμφωνα όμως με τις Γραφές αλλά και το Εβραϊκό δίκαιο ο μνηστήρας αποκαλείται και άνδρας, διότι, παρά το ότι δεν έχει οποιανδήποτε σαρκική σχέση με τη μνηστή του, εντούτοις έχει όλα τα νομικά δικαιώματα, όπως ακριβώς και ο σύζυγος. Κατέχει τη θέση του αρχηγού της 6

οικογένειας και μπορεί να εφαρμόσει το νόμο της τιμωρίας της γυναίκας, όταν διαπιστώσει παράπτωμα, ή να εκδώσει το λεγόμενο «αποστάσιον», δηλαδή να δώσει διαζύγιο στη μνηστή του. Ο Ιωσήφ καθώς ήταν δίκαιος και ευσεβής άνθρωπος, όταν διαπίστωσε, ότι η Μαρία ήταν έγκυος σκεφτόταν να εφαρμόσει τον Ιουδαϊκό νόμο και να εκδώσει το «αποστάσιον». Τις αμφιβολίες του όμως διαλύει ο άγγελος του Θεού, ο οποίος τον πληροφορεί για την αλήθεια της εγκυμοσύνης της Παρθένου Μαρίας. Παρά το γεγονός ότι ο Ιωσήφ δεν ήταν ο φυσικός πατέρας του Ιησού Χριστού, μετά την παρέμβαση του αγγέλου θέτει ο ίδιος τον εαυτό του στην υπηρεσία του σχεδίου του Θεού και καθίσταται ο θετός πατέρας του Ιησού Χριστού, μεταβιβάζοντάς του έτσι όλα τα νόμιμα δικαιώματα, να ανήκει δηλαδή και εκείνος στο γενεαλογικό δένδρο του Δαβίδ. Κατά τον τρόπο αυτό φανερώνεται για άλλη μία φορά η άκρα συγκατάβαση του Θεού, να υποτάσσεται δηλαδή στους ανθρώπινους νόμους με σκοπό τη σωτηρία του ανθρωπίνου γένους. Η παρέμβαση αυτή του αγγέλου του Θεού, εκτός από την αποκάλυψη προς τον Ιωσήφ για το «εν αυτή γεννηθέν εκ Πνεύματος εστίν Αγίου», περιγράφει και τον σκοπό της γέννησης του Ιησού Χριστού, «αυτός γαρ σώσει τον λαόν αυτού από των αμαρτιών αυτών». Αυτός είναι ο σκοπός της ενανθρώπησης του Ιησού Χριστού, η σωτηρία των ανθρώπων και η λύτρωσή τους από τη δουλεία της αμαρτίας. Ο Ιησούς Χριστός είναι ο αναμενόμενος ανά τους αιώνας Μεσσίας, ο Σωτήρας και Λυτρωτής του κόσμου. Ο άνθρωπος μετά την πτώση και αποστασία του από τον Θεό, αναπόφευκτα υποδουλώθηκε στην αμαρτία, στη φθορά και στον θάνατο. Η λύτρωση και σωτηρία του δεν θα μπορούσε ποτέ να επιτευχθεί με ανθρώπινες δυνάμεις. Αυτό λοιπόν που ήταν ακατόρθωτο για τον άνθρωπο, προσφέρεται τώρα από τον γεννηθέντα εκ Πνεύματος Αγίου και Μαρίας της Παρθένου. Η Γέννηση του Ιησού Χριστού, εκτός από ιστορικό γεγονός αποτελεί «το μέγα της ευσεβείας μυστήριον» (Τιμ.Α.3,16), το γεγονός δηλαδή ότι ο Θεός έγινε άνθρωπος για να σώσει τον άνθρωπο. Έτσι ο άνθρωπος αποκτά και πάλιν τη δυνατότητα της κοινωνίας με τον Θεό και της επιστροφής του στο «αρχαίον κάλλος», στην ωραιότητα και μακαριότητα του παραδείσου, τον οποίο απώλεσε, ένεκα της παρακοής στο θέλημα του Θεού. Αυτήν την ελπίδα και αισιοδοξία δίδει η Γέννηση του Ιησού Χριστού στο σύγχρονο κόσμο. Η καταλλαγή που επιφέρει η Γέννηση του Υιού του Θεού στον κόσμο μας, δεν αφορά μόνο τη σχέση του ανθρώπου προς τον Θεό, αλλά και τη σχέση του ανθρώπου προς τον συνάνθρωπό του. Ο καθένας μας οφείλει να βλέπει τον συνάνθρωπό του σαν αδελφό του, για τον οποίο επίσης γεννήθηκε, σταυρώθηκε και αναστήθηκε ο Υιός του Θεού. 7

Koliva is boiled wheat with a combination of some or all of the following ingredients: powdered sugar, almonds, ground walnuts, sesame seeds, cinnamon, pomegranate seeds, raisins, anise, parsley and more. Koliva is made for memorials, typically on Saturdays of the Souls, and according to different traditions, the day of a Funeral, the 40 th day after death, 3 rd month, 6 th month, 9 th month, annually, and even sometimes just on big anniversaries only, such as 5 years, 10 years, etc. You may also have Kolyva on the funeral day but ONLY boiled wheat no sweetness is added. Sweetness is added on the 40day memorial and thereafter. In John s Gospel we find this quote, Christ said, Unless a wheat grain falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. (John 12:24) As Orthodox Christians we are awaiting the 2 nd Coming and the General Resurrection of the dead, through Christ we have Life! But, remembering the memory of our deceased beloved ones is an opportunity to pray for the souls of the departed as well as a way to help us heal from the death. Think about certain personal hygiene tasks such as brushing your teeth that you do each day out of habit. You don t forget to do them each day. Your prayer needs to become a habit as strong as these. Prayer must become a daily habit that you never forget. Prayer is essential for the health of our soul Just like the hygiene activities that we do for the health of our body. GUIDELINES FOR RECEIVING HOLY COMMUNION Holy Communion is offered in the Orthodox Church only to those individuals baptized and Chrismated (confirmed) in the Orthodox Faith. To participate in Holy Communion one must be in good standing with the Church spiritually (for example, married people must have had their marriage blessed in the Church and all must be without grave sin on their hearts). For all Orthodox Christians, the proper preparation for Holy Communion must be observed: examination of conscience, confession, reading the prayers for Holy Communion, and the proper fasting.
