1 Paradigm for principal parts of Greek verbs: PRINCIPAL PARTS OF GREEK VERBS IN CORE VOCABULARY Present Future Aorist Perfect Active Perfect Middle Aorist Passive Meaning augment reduplication reduplication augment stem + ω stem + σω + stem + σα + stem + κα + stem + μαι + stem + θην λύω λύσω ἔλυσα λέλυκα λέλυμαι ἐλύθην loosen The last sound of the stem roughly determines the pattern for the principal parts of the verb. All regular verbs fall into one of the following groups: vowel stems: α, ε, ο, υ vowel lengthens in future, aorist and perfect stems ποιέω, ποιήσω, ἐποίησα, πεποίηκα, πεποίημαι, ἐποιήθην labial stems: β, π, πτ, φ + σ ψ, therefore -ψ- in future and aorist + κ φ, therefore -φ- in perfect active + μ μμ, therefore -μμ- in perfect middle + θ φθ, therefore -φθ- in aorist passive τρίβω, τρίψω, ἔτριψα, τέτριφα, τέτριμμαι, ἐτρίφθην dental stems: δ, ζ, θ, σ + σ σ, therefore -σ- in future and aorist but -ίζω ιέω ιῶ in "Attic future" + κ κ, therefore -κ- in perfect active + μ σμ, therefore -σμ- in perfect middle + θ σθ, therefore -σθ- in aorist passive δικάζω, δικάσω, ἐδίκασα, δεδίκακα, δεδίκασμαι, ἐδικάσθην palatal stems: γ, κ, χ, σσ (= ττ in Attic) + σ ξ, therefore -ξ- in future and aorist + κ χ, therefore -χ- in perfect active + μ γμ, therefore -γμ- in perfect middle + θ χθ, therefore -χθ- in aorist passive ἄρχω, ἄρξω, ἦρξα, ἦρχα, ἦργμαι, ἤρχθην liquid stems: λ, μ, ν, ρ the suffix -αν- appears only on the present stem + σ loss of σ, therefore -εω- in future and no σ in aorist + κ γκ, but more often just -κ- in perfect active + μ μ, therefore -μ- in perfect middle + θ θ, therefore -θ- in aorist passive κρίνω, κρινῶ, ἔκρινα, κέκρικα, κέκριμαι, ἐκρίθην Vowels: augmented, lengthened or reduplicated: α or ε η (except after ε, ι, ρ, where α ᾱ), ο ω. Consonants: reduplicated φ πεφ-, χ κεχ-, θ τεθ, σ ἐσ-. Verbs with stems which violate the above rules are listed below, with the irregular part(s) underlined. While many verbs lack one or more principal parts, or are simply not attested in some forms, lack of a particular part does not in itself constitute a violation. A verb must display an irregular formation to be listed here. Most irregularities involve changes in the vowels in the stem. This list does not include compound verbs whose base verbs are listed.
