Lardas ************************************************************************* 2nd Tone-11th Morning Gospel /Ήχος B - Εωθινόν IA The Birth of the Panagia- Η Γέννηση της Παναγίας Σήμερα η Εκκλησία γιορτάζει το Γενέσιο της Υπεραγίας Θεοτόκου. Είναι η πρώτη Θεομητορική εορτή του εκκλησιαστικού έτους, στην οποία θα επακολουθήσουν άλλες πολλές σε όλο το έτος. Μεγάλο δώρο του Θεού ήταν η Παναγία στους γονείς της Ιωακείμ και Άννα, που δεν είχαν τέκνα. Μα πιο μεγάλο δώρο του Θεού είναι η γέννηση της Υπεραγίας Θεοτόκου στον κόσμο είναι το προμήνυμα της σωτηρίας «Η γέννησίς σου, Θεοτόκε χαράν εμήνυσε πάση τη οικουμένη». Ήλθε ο καιρός να εκπληρωθούν οι επαγγελίες του Θεού. Ύστερα από λίγα χρόνια, το νήπιο που γεννήθηκε σήμερα θα γεννήσει το Σωτήρα Χριστό απ αυτήν θα ανατείλει «ο ήλιος της δικαιοσύνης Χριστός ο Θεός ημών». Καμιά γυναίκα στον κόσμο δεν αξιώθηκε την τόσο μεγάλη τιμή της Παναγίας Παρθένου Μαρίας, που έγινε η μητέρα του Θεού στη γη. Γι αυτό οι γενεές των πιστών μακαρίζουν την Υπεραγία Θεοτόκο, καθώς εκείνη προφητικά το είπε «ιδού γαρ από τον νυν μακαριούσι με πάσαι αι γενεαί». Και κάθε ψυχή χριστιανού στρέφεται πάντα με το θάρρος και την εμπιστοσύνη του παιδιού προς την Παναγία, γιατί αυτή είναι η μητέρα και στο πανάγιο πρόσωπό της βλέπει ο κάθε πιστός τη δική του μητέρα, εκείνη που τον θήλασε, που τον κράτησε στα χέρια της, που τον προστάτεψε και τον ζέστανε στην αγκαλιά της. Apolytikion of St. Nicholas, The truth of things hath revealed thee to thy flock as a rule of faith, an icon of meekness, and a teacher of temperance; for this cause, thou hast achieved the heights by humility, riches by poverty. O Father and Hierarch Nicholas, intercede with Christ God that our souls be saved. Kontakion in the Fourth Tone In your holy birth, Immaculate One, Joachim and Anna were rid of the shame of childlessness; Adam and Eve of the corruption of death. And so your people, free of the guilt of their sins, celebrate crying: "The barren one gives birth to the Theotokos, who nourishes our life."

Η Υπεραγία Θεοτόκος έχει την πρώτη θέση μεταξύ όλων των Αγίων της Εκκλησίας και των επουρανίων Αγγέλων. Είναι η «Αγία άγιων μείζων», η «τιμιωτέρα των Χερουβείμ και ενδοξότερα ασυγκρίτως των Σερα φείμ». Όταν ήλθε στη Ναζαρέτ, κομίζοντας το ουράνιο μήνυμα προς την παρθένο Μαρία, ο αρχάγγελος Γαβριήλ την χαιρέτησε με το «κεχαριτωμένη» και την ονόμασε «ευλογημένην εν γυναιξί». Και η Ελισάβετ, η μητέρα του Προδρόμου την υποδέχθηκε ως την μητέρα του Κυρίου «τί τιμή σε μένα να με επισκεφτεί η μητέρα του Κυρίου μου!». Κύριος είναι ο Χριστός, ο Θεός, που κρατούσε η Παναγία σαρκωμένο μέσα της. Οι ιεροί Πατέρες της Εκκλησίας έγραψαν εγκωμιαστικούς λόγους στην Υπεραγία Θεοτόκο, στους οποίους την ονομάζουν «κοινόν των γυναικών καύχημα» και «δόξαν του θήλεος», «σεμνόν κειμήλιον απάσης της οικουμένης» και «σκήπτρον της ορθοδοξίας». Και η ευσέβεια των πιστών σύνθεσε κι αφιέρωσε στη μητέρα του Θεού τους πιο ποιητικούς ύμνους, από εκείνους που βρίσκονται θησαυρισμένοι στην εκκλησιαστική υμνολογία. Όχι μόνο στις Θεομητορικές εορτές αντηχούν στους ορθόδοξους ναούς οι ύμνοι της Παναγίας, αλλά και κάθε Κυριακή και κάθε γιορτή ακούγονται τα «Θεοτοκία», οι ύμνοι δηλαδή προς τη Θεοτόκο, με τους οποίους κλείνει κάθε σειρά και ομάδα τροπαρίων. Κάθε τροπάριο, του οποίου προηγείται «Και νυν» είναι «Θεοτοκίο». Αλλά η Εκκλησία, σ έναν μονολεκτικό τίτλο,

5 ερμήνευσε όλο το μυστήριο του προσώπου και του έργου της Παρθένου Μαρίας. Η τρίτη οικουμενική Σύνοδος, σύμφωνα με το χαιρετισμό της Ελισάβετ και τη διδασκαλία των μεγάλων Πατέρων, ονόμασε την αγία Παρθένο «Θεοτόκο» «ομολογούμε πως η αγία Παρθένος είναι Θεοτόκος, επειδή πραγματικά ο Λόγος του Θεού και Θεός έλαβε σάρκα κι έγινε άνθρωπος». Το «Θεοτόκος», είναι ο ιερός τίτλος της αγίας Παρθένου Μαρίας, που εκφράζει και εξηγεί το μυστήριο της πίστεως. Το «Θεοτόκος» είναι το κλειδί της Ορθοδοξίας. Σε κάθε ιερή Ακολουθία, όταν ακούμε το όνομα της Θεοτόκου, κάνουμε το σημείο του σταυρού. Αυτό τα λέγει όλα. Είναι παράκληση μαζί και ομολογία. Παρακαλούμε και ικετεύουμε την Υπεραγία Θεοτόκο να πρεσβεύει για μας στον Υιό της και Σωτήρα του κόσμου. Και ομολογούμε πως εκείνη, που ζητούμε την πρεσβεία της, είναι η μητέρα του Θεού, γιατί ο Ιησούς Χριστός ο υιός της είναι ο Θεός, που έλαβε σάρκα κι έγινε άνθρωπος για μας. Ο άγιος Κύριλλος ο αρχιεπίσκοπος Αλεξανδρείας λέει πως η Θεοτόκος είναι η Εκκλησία, η δε Εκκλησία είναι ο ουρανός και η γη, όλος δηλαδή ο κόσμος. Κάθε φορά λοιπόν που ακούμε το όνομα Θεοτόκος και κάνομε το σταυρό μας, εκφράζουμε την ορθόδοξη πίστη μας, «ομολογούμεν την αγίαν Παρθένον Θεοτόκον». The Birth of the Theotokos The Church s veneration of Mary has always been rooted in her obedience to God, her willing choice to accept a humanly impossible calling. The Orthodox Church has always emphasized Mary s connection to humanity and delighted in her as the best, purest, most sublime fruition of human history and of man s quest for God, for ultimate meaning, for ultimate content of human life. If in Western Christianity veneration of Mary was centered upon her perpetual virginity, the heart of Orthodox Christian East s devotion, contemplation, and joyful delight has always been her Motherhood, her flesh and blood connection to Jesus Christ. The East rejoices that the human role in the divine plan is pivotal. The Son of God comes to earth, appears in order to redeem the world, He becomes human to incorporate man into His divine vocation, but humanity takes part in this. If it is understood that Christ s co-nature with us is as a human being and not some phantom or bodiless apparition, that He is one of us and forever united to us through His and forever united to us through His humanity, then devotion to Mary also becomes understandable, for she is the one who have Him His human nature, His flesh and blood. She is the one through whom Christ can always call Himself The Son of Man. Son of God, Son of Man God descending and becoming man so that man could become divine, could become partaker of the divine nature (2 Peter 1:4), or as the teachers of Church expressed it, deified. Precisely here, in this extraordinary revelation of man s authentic nature and calling, is the source that gratitude and tenderness which cherishes Mary as our link to Christ and, in Him, to God. And nowhere is this reflected more clearly that in the Nativity of the Mother of God. Nothing about this event is mentioned anywhere in the Holy Scriptures. But why should there be? Is there anything remarkable, anything especially unique about the normal birth of a child, a birth like any other? The Church began to commemorate the event with a special feast because, on the contrary, the very fact that it is routine discloses something fresh and radiant about everything we call routine and ordinary, it gives new depth to the unremarkable details of human life And with each birth the world is itself in some sense created anew and given as a gift to this new human being to be his life, his path, his creation. This feast therefore is first a general celebration of Man s birth, and we no longer remember the anguish, as the Gospel says, for joy that a human being is born into the world (Jn. 16:21). Secondly, we now know whose particular birth, whose coming we celebrate: Mary s. We know the uniqueness, the beauty, the grace of precisely this child, her destiny, her meaning for us and for the whole world. And thirdly, we celebrate all who prepared the way for Mary, who contributed to her inheritance of grace and beauty And therefore the Feast of her Nativity is also a celebration of human history, a celebration of faith in man, a celebration of man. Sadly, the inheritance of evil is far more visible and better known. There is so much evil around us that this faith in man, in his freedom, in the possibility of handing down a radiant inheritance of goodness has almost evaporated and been replaced by cynicism and suspicion. This hostile cynicism and discouraging suspicion are precisely what seduce us to distance ourselves from the Church when it celebrates with such joy and faith this birth of a little girl in whom are concentrated all the goodness, spiritual beauty, harmony and perfection that are elements of genuine human nature. Thus, in celebrating Mary s birth we find ourselves already on the road to Bethlehem, moving toward to the joyful mystery of Mary as the Mother to God.
