2 WEEKLY MESSAGE One time, I was sitting around a table with religious leaders from all sorts of backgrounds. This group included Christians and non-christians, and we were discussing the importance of hospital ministry. One Christian pastor asked, Is there anyone who would visit a patient in the hospital and not pray for physical healing? The answer sounded obvious enough, since the very reason a patient enters the hospital is to be healed by doctors who have been trained in all the newest technologies. We don t go to the hospital to die. I was troubled by his question, because as Orthodox Christians we approach life from a different vantage point, so I raised my hand. I don t! I let it sit out there for a minute or two. As an Orthodox Christian, I pray they are healed so that they may live long enough to repent. A long discussion ensued. I think it has become too easy to pray for healing just so that we are no longer sick. We pray that God will fix what is broken in our bodies, so that we can continue to pursue our dreams of building great dynasties. We pray that God allow us to get up from our sick bed, so that we can walk into work another day and close that perfect deal we were just about to wrap up. We even pray to God that we don t die too soon, so that we can enjoy time with our family. Let s face it; we all have excuses about why we don t want to die. But if we re honest, the excuse rarely -- if ever -- includes time for repentance and confession. We hear something similar in the Gospel. The Lord compares heaven to a great banquet to which many had been invited. The master had sent word to those who had been invited that the banquet was ready, But they all with one accord began to make excuses. (Luke 14.18) The result was that others were brought into the banquet and those who had made excuses were left outside. The master said, For I say to you that none of those men who were invited shall taste my supper. (Luke 14.24) The stories in the Gospel are never just stories. They are meant for us today to hear and embrace as a witness to God s loving promise about our future with Him. That means WE have been invited to the banquet which He calls Heaven. We have been called by His servants, the Saints of our Church, to remind us that He is waiting for us. We have been given the opportunity to accept His invitation to the banquet. It also means that we have been the chance to come up with excuses about why we aren t ready to attend. It isn t because we don t want to attend; we just would rather spend more time doing what we like to do down here for a while longer. That s really why we spend so much energy trying to get healed and leave the hospital. We want more time to check out the new property we just purchased, test the new equipment we just installed, or enjoy time with our family. The truth of God s promise is that we don t know exactly when He will send His servants to bring us to the banquet, so we need to be willing to answer the call when the time comes. That can only mean that we must be ready and waiting for His call. But when He calls and you aren t ready, what will your excuse be? Instead of making excuses, be ready for Him. Be waiting for Him. Enter into the banquet together with Him and avoid being left outside the gates of heaven. It isn t about property, jobs, and family. It is about entering into heaven with God.

On account of these the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience. In these you once walked, when you lived in them. But now put them all away; anger, wrath, malice, slander, and foul talk from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old nature with its practices and have put on the new nature, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. Here there cannot be Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free man, but Christ is all, and in all. GOSPEL Luke 14:16-24 T he Lord said this parable: "A man once gave a great banquet, and invited many; and at the time of the banquet he sent his servant to say to those who had been invited, 'Come; for all is now ready.' But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said to him, 'I have bought a field, and I go out and see it; I pray you, have me excused.' And another said, 'I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I must go to examine them; I pray you, have me excused.' And another said, 'I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.' So the servant came and reported this to his master. Then the householder in anger said to his servant, 'Go out quickly to the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in the poor and maimed and blind and lame.' And the servant said, 'Sir, what you commanded has been done, and there is still room.' And the master said to the servant, 'Go out to the highways and hedges, and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled. For I tell you, none of those men who were invited shall taste my banquet. For many are called, but few are chosen.'" HOLY EUCHARIST (HOLY COMMUNION) Holy Communion is a Sacrament within the Orthodox Church and is only offered to Baptized and/or Chrismated Orthodox Christians who have prepared themselves to receive the Body and Blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. As you come to receive, please follow the direction of the Parish Council Members, Ushers, and Acolytes. We remind everyone that the Blessed Bread (Antidoron) offered at the end of the Divine Liturgy may be received by all.

6 Saints and Feasts of the Week ST DIONYSIOS OF ZAKYNTHOS St Dionysios of Zakynthos was born and reared on Zakynthos, the son of pious and wealthy parents. In his youth he entered the monastery of the Strophada Islands. Later, he was appointed Archbishop of Aegina, and adorned its throne for a considerable time. Thereafter he returned to his homeland. One incident in his life especially reveals to what virtue he attained. A man came to him in desperation, witnessing that he had committed a murder, and was being pursued by the slain man's family. He asked St. Dionysius to give him refuge. The Saint agreed to this. Upon learning that it was his own brother whom the man had slain, he said nothing, but concealing the agony of his grief, hid him. When the Saint's kinsmen arrived he told them that the murderer had gone by such and such a way. When they had departed, he admonished the man, instructed him in repentance, and sent him off having forgiven him. According to local tradition, this man later returned and became a monk at this same monastery. St. Dionysius reposed in peace in Ο ΑΓΙΟΣ ΔΙΟΝΥΣΙΟΣ ΤΗΣ ΖΑΚΥΝΘΟΥ O Άγιος Διονύσιος ήταν γόνος ευσεβέστατης και αρχοντικής οικογενείας της Ζακύνθου. 'Εγινε μοναχός στη βασιλική Μονή Στροφάδων όπου μελετούσε τις Γραφές. Πήγε στην Αθήνα για να ταξιδέψει στα Ιεροσόλυμα, όμως ο τότε Αρχιερέας Αθηνών άκουσε το κήρυγμα του και τον έκανε επίσκοπο Αιγίνης. Δούλεψε άγρυπνα, ακούραστα και ταπεινά. Ασθένησε όμως και γύρισε στη Ζάκυνθο όπου μέχρι το 1579 ήταν προσωρινός επίσκοπος. Πέθανε σε βαθιά γεράματα στις 17 Δεκεμβρίου του Τάφηκε στη Μονή Στροφάδων. ST ELEFTHERIOS THE HOLY MARTYR This Saint had Rome as his homeland. Having been orphaned of his father from childhood, he was taken by his mother Anthia to Anicetus, the Bishop of Rome, by whom he was instructed in the divine Scriptures. Though still very young in years, he was made Bishop of Illyricum by reason of his surpassing virtue, and by his teachings he converted many unbelievers to Christ. However, during a most harsh persecution that was raised against the Christians under Hadrian, the Saint was arrested. Enduring many torments for Christ, he was finally put to death by two soldiers about the year 126. As for his Christ-loving mother Anthia, while embracing the remains of her son and kissing them with maternal affection, she was also beheaded. ΑΓΙΟΣ ΕΛΕΥΘΕΡΙΟΣ Ο ΙΕΡΟΜΑΡΤΥΡΑΣ Ό Άγιος Ελευθέριος γεννήθηκε το 2ο αιώνα.τότε αυτοκράτορας ήταν ο Κόμμοδος και ο Σεπτίμιος Σεβήρος. Aνατράφηκε σύμφωνα με τις επιταγές του Ευαγγελίου από την ευσεβέστατη μητέρα του, Άνθια. Διακαής πόθος της ήταν να επισκεφθεί τη Ρώμη. Κάποτε λοιπόν, αποφάσισε και πήγε. Μαζί πήρε και το νεαρό γιο της. Ο επίσκοπος Ρώμης, όταν είδε τον Ελευθέριο, εκτιμώντας την πολλή νοημοσύνη του, τη θερμή πίστη και το αγνό ήθος του, τον έλαβε υπό την προστασία του. Μετά από λίγα χρόνια τον χειροτόνησε διάκονο και έπειτα Ιερέα. Το έτος 182 μ.χ., με κοινή ψήφο κλήρου και λαού, ανήλθε στον επισκοπικό θρόνο της Ρώμης. Η φήμη της αρετής του έφθασε μέχρι τη Βρετανία. Έτσι, ο βασιλιάς αυτής Λούκιος, έγραψε επιστολή στον Ελευθέριο και του δήλωνε ότι αυτός και ο λαός του επιθυμούσαν να γίνουν χριστιανοί. Ο Ελευθέριος αμέσως ανταποκρίθηκε, στέλνοντας δύο εκπαιδευμένους στην πίστη άνδρες, που κατήχησαν και βάπτισαν χριστιανούς το Λούκιο με το λαό του. Όταν ο Σεπτίμιος Σεβήρος εξήγειρε διωγμό κατά των χριστιανών, ο Ελευθέριος τον ήλεγξε θαρραλέα. Τότε διατάχθηκε ο μαρτυρικός θάνατός του, μαζί με τη μητέρα του Άνθια.

ST NICHOLAS KITCHEN St Nicholas Kitchen is an outreach ministry which provides a hot meal and fellowship to those in need. Volunteers for cooking, serving meals and cleanup between 8:00 am and 1:00 pm - along with monetary donations for the purchase of food - are welcome and needed. MILITARY SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT All male Greek citizens born in 1999 are requested to present themselves to the Consulate General of Greece in Tampa, between January 2 nd and March 31 st 2017, in order to submit required information regarding national military service, such as address, telephone number, , level of education, etc. The information can be submitted by the individual himself and by appointment only. All individuals should provide a male registry certificate from any Municipality of Greece. A Greek ID or passport should also be presented. In case of serious health problems, official medical evidence should also be submitted translated. Please note that, the above information must be submitted by the March 31 st, 2017 deadline. We need everyone s help The Shepard Center will once again provide a Christmas basket to families for the Holidays. As a parish, let s come together and help collect 600 bags of rice. If everyone could bring one 1-lb bag of white rice, this goal can be reached. A box will be placed in Fr Tryfon Hall for drop off. 25 VOLUNTEER AT THE COLD NIGHT SHELTER The First United Methodist Church (FUMC) in Tarpon Springs has graciously opened its doors to families without heat, and to the homeless, during the cold winter months when the temperatures fall below 40 degrees. They will provide a warm overnight facility for those in need, along with some food and hot beverages. This occurs approximately 4 to 5 nights each winter, and some 30 to 40 people come to the shelter. Teams of volunteers from various churches and local organizations set up the facility for the night, serve food and otherwise ensure a safe and warm overnight experience. All participants are asked to leave the facility no later than 7 am the flowing morning. The volunteers then clean-up the facility and prepare it for the day s regular activities. The church is recruiting teams of volunteers to help with this effort and will be seeking donations of food and beverages on the nights when the shelter is open.
