2 WEEKLY MESSAGE When we were growing up, our parents and teachers spent much of their time teaching us the proper way we were to behave. They taught us how to act in Church, the proper way to sit in a restaurant, and the polite way to remain still and quiet in a library. As we grew older and we forgot our manners (as we often did), our parents would remind us about proper behavior. As we grew even older and still forgot how to properly behave, if we were lucky they would ask, Didn t I teach you how to behave? Show me how you are supposed to act in Church. Since we did remember everything they taught us, even though we didn t always act like it, we were always able to repeat the rules to them. We are supposed to sit quietly and pay attention. Eventually, we became adults and our parents were no longer constantly reminding us about our behavior, because we already knew what to do. There was a certain ruler, who just like us, knew the right way to behave. In fact, he had always followed the rules. One day, he asked Jesus how to have eternal life. When Jesus reminded him about keeping the commandments, he said, All these I have observed since my youth. (Luke 18.21) He must have thought he was good to go to heaven, since he had always followed the rules. But there was something missing that Jesus pointed out to him. "You still lack one thing. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me." (Luke 18.22) There was only one little problem he was very, very rich. The ruler walked away very sad from Jesus that day. You see, it isn t enough to just follow the rules. Rules don t get us into heaven. There are many stories in the Holy Scriptures about people who follow the rules but still end up losing. Of course, it isn t because they followed the rules that they lost. They lost because they thought following the rules was the key to heaven. They lost because they didn t understand the purpose behind the rules in the first place. It is the purpose that counts, not just the rules. When the ruler thought following the rules would be enough to get him into heaven, he didn t realize the rules had a deeper purpose. They were supposed to help him love the way God wanted him to love. When Jesus said, You know the commandments: 'Do not commit adultery,' 'Do not murder,' 'Do not steal,' 'Do not bear false witness,' 'Honor your father and your mother, He offered a few of the Commandments to remind him that when we want to love like God loves, we would not commit adultery, or murder or steal or lie. Jesus was telling the ruler that the Commandments were supposed to help him learn to love. Unfortunately for the ruler, he was more concerned about whether the rules were being followed and never considered that he was expected to love. How do we know? When Jesus said, Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, He knew that only someone who loved the way God loves would be willing to sell everything. Unfortunately for the ruler, he decided to walk away. We are blessed because, just like our parents were willing to remind us about the rules, the Church is willing to remind us about them too. We don t have to walk away from God. We can still choose to learn from our mistakes. We can still choose to learn to love the way God wants us to love. After all, it isn t about just following the rules. It s about learning to love, but then again...we already know what to do.

Resurrectional Apolytikion When the angelic powers appeared at Your grave, the soldiers guarding it feared and became as dead. You resurrected from the dead. O Lord, glory to You. For the Saint Your Martyr, O Lord, was worthily awarded by You the crown of incorruption, in that he contested for You our immortal God. Since he possessed Your power, he defeated the tyrants, dashing the demons' powerless displays of defiance. O Christ God, at his fervent entreaties, save our souls. Apolytikion of St. Nicholas As rule of the faith and picture of gentleness, and teacher of temperance you were exhibited to your flock, by the truth of the evidence, Thus you acquired the lofty through humility, abundance through poverty. Father and Hierarch Nicholas, intercede with Christ our God, that our souls may be saved. Kontakion On this day the Virgin Maid goes to the grotto to give birth to the pre-eternal Word in an ineffable manner. Dance for joy, all the inhabited earth, on hearing. Glorify along with Angels and with the shepherds Him who willed that He appear as a newborn Child, the pre-eternal God.

5 EPISTLE Ephesians 2:4-10 B rethren, God who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with him, and made us sit with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God: not because of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. GOSPEL Luke 18:18-27 A t that time, a ruler came to Jesus and asked him, "Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" And Jesus said to him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: 'Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.' " And he said, "All these I have observed from my youth." And when Jesus heard it, he said to him, "One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me." But when he heard this he became sad, for he was very rich. Jesus looking at him said, "How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God! For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." Those who heard it said, "Then who can be saved?" But he said, "What is impossible with men is possible with God." HOLY EUCHARIST (HOLY COMMUNION) Holy Communion is a Sacrament within the Orthodox Church and is only offered to Baptized and/or Chrismated Orthodox Christians who have prepared themselves to receive the Body and Blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. As you come to receive, please follow the direction of the Parish Council Members, Ushers, and Acolytes. We remind everyone that the Blessed Bread (Antidoron) offered at the end of the Divine Liturgy may be received by all.

6 Saints and Feasts of the Week ANDREW THE FIRST-CALLED APOSTLE This Saint was from Bethsaida of Galilee; he was the son of Jonas and the brother of Peter, the chief of the Apostles. He had first been a disciple of John the Baptist; afterwards, on hearing the Baptist's witness concerning Jesus, when he pointed Him out with his finger and said, "Behold the Lamb of God, Which taketh away the sin of the world" (John 1.29,36), he straightway followed Christ, and became His first disciple; wherefore he is called the First-called of the Apostles. After the Ascension of the Saviour, he preached in various lands; and having suffered many things for His Name's sake, he died in Patras of Achaia, where he was crucified on a cross in the shape of an "X," the first letter of "Christ" in Greek; this cross is also the symbol of Saint Andrew. PHILARET THE MERCIFUL OF AMNIA Saint Philaret, a native of Paphlagonia in Asia Minor, was a virtuous Christian layman who lived in lawful wedlock and raised a family. He was most renowned for his generosity to all in need. With the permission of God, in a short space of time he lost the greater part of his possessions to theft and other misfortunes and was left with nothing but his family, his home, and a little livestock. Yet he continued to give generously to the poor despite the faintheartedness of his family, who reproached him for giving alms when they were in need themselves; and God, seeing his faith, restored his prosperity to him many times over. He foresaw the day of his death, and reposed in an odor of sanctity in Constantinople in 789. ΆΓΙΟΣ ΦΙΛΑΡΕΤΟΣ Ο Άγιος Φιλάρετος ήταν υπόδειγμα κάθε αρετής και ιδιαίτερα της αγαθοεργίας. Έζησε στους χρόνους του Κωνσταντίνου Πορφυρογέννητου και της μητέρας αυτού Ειρήνης της Αττικής ( ). Γεννήθηκε στο χωριό Αμνία (ή Αμνεία) της Γάγγρας (Παφλαγονία) από ευσεβείς γονείς, τον Γεώργιο και την Άννα. Παντρεύτηκε την Θεοσεβώ και απόκτησε τρία παιδιά. Ένα γιο, τον Ιωάννη, και δύο κόρες, που την πρώτη έλεγαν Υπατία και τη δεύτερη Ευανθία. Ο Φιλάρετος ήταν γεωργός και από τα εισοδήματα του, πλουσιοπάροχα μοίραζε ελεημοσύνη στους φτωχούς. Πεινασμένο έβρισκε; τον χόρταινε. Γυμνό; τον έντυνε. Χήρα και ορφανό; βοηθούσε και παρηγορούσε. Αλλά ο Θεός επέτρεψε και ο Φιλάρετος κάποτε κατάντησε πολύ φτωχός. Τα κτήματα του τα άρπαξαν οι γείτονες του και το βίος του διασκορπίστηκε.όλα αυτά τα υπέμεινε χωρίς ποτέ να λυπηθεί ή να βλαστημήσει ή να αγανακτήσει. Στο τέλος του έμειναν μόνο τα μελίσσια του, 250 κυψέλες, δυνατές και παραγωγικές. Και όταν ερχόταν προς αυτόν κάποιος φτωχός, μη έχοντας τι άλλο να του δώσει, τον έπαιρνε, πήγαινε στα μελίσσια, τρυγούσε μια κυψέλη και έδινε το μέλι στο φτωχό για να χορτάσει. Με τον τρόπο αυτό είτε ήταν καιρός για να τρυγήσει είτε δεν ήταν, εξάλειψε όλα τα μελίσσια του. Ο Θεός που είδε την ασυναγώνιστη πίστη του οικονόμησε με την πρόνοια Του, ώστε ο Κωνσταντίνος, γιος της βασίλισσας Ειρήνης, να πάρει για γυναίκα του την εγγονή του Αγίου, Μαρία, επειδή ήταν πολύ ωραία στην ψυχή και στο σώμα. Τους γάμους τέλεσε ο Άγιος Ταράσιος τον Νοέμβριο του 788, ο οποίος ήταν τότε Πατριάρχης Κωνσταντινουπόλεως. Τον δε Φιλάρετο, ο Αυτοκράτορας τον τίμησε με το αξίωμα του υπάτου (έπαρχος). Έτσι έγινε κάτοχος πολλού πλούτου, που τον διαμοίραζε ακόμα πιο άφθονα στους φτωχούς. Λίγο πριν πεθάνει, κάλεσε τους συγγενείς του και είπε τα εξής: «Παιδιά μου, μη ξεχνάτε ποτέ τη φιλοξενία, μη επιθυμείτε τα ξένα πράγματα, μη λείπετε ποτέ από τις ακολουθίες και λειτουργίες της Εκκλησίας, και γενικά όπως έζησα εγώ έτσι να ζείτε και εσείς». Και αυτά αφού είπε, ξεψύχησε με τη φράση: «γενηθήτω τὸ θέλημά σου». Ο Άγιος Φιλάρετος είναι ο προστάτης της Μελισσοκομίας.

9 A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT AND TREASURER TO ALL PARISHIONERS We survived our seasonal slow period again without having to draw on our credit line!!! Our cash position was approximately $316,000 and our short-term liabilities were approximately $16,000. However, our stewardship and other donations are down. We need to work hard to try to improve this. We, as members of the Parish Council, believe that Father Athanasios and Father Sampson will follow the path of Father James Rousakis, continuing to draw St. Nicholas parishioners back in to our community and ultimately strengthening our Cathedral. Our long-term liabilities consist only of our unsecured Line of Credit at USAmeriBank. Last year at this time, we owed: $41,000 on our Hope Street Property; today we owe nothing, as we retired the debt! $147,000 on our Line of Credit; Today we owe $62,000. We reduced our debt on this line by $85,000 in 12 months! In fact, the last time we borrowed on the credit line was September of 2014, OVER 2 YEARS AGO! Under the leadership of Past President Nikitas Manias and President Mike Kouremetis, we were able to reduce our long term debt by $126,000 in a 12 month period......and that is something to CELEBRATE!!! ST NICHOLAS KITCHEN St Nicholas Kitchen is an outreach ministry which provides a hot meal and fellowship to those in need. Volunteers for cooking, serving meals and cleanup between 8:00 am and 1:00 pm - along with monetary donations for the purchase of food - are welcome and needed. Remember the book of Matthew 25:35-36:...For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me. AN OIL OF OFFERING Following the ancient tradition of the Temple as commanded by God, Orthodox Christians bring an offering of olive oil to be burned in the Church lamps continually, serving as a reminder of the presence of the Light of God. And you shall command the children of Israel that they bring you pure oil of pressed olives for the light, to cause the lamp to burn continually (Exodus 27.20) We invite anyone to make an offering of oil to the Church, along with the names of loved ones and friends who are alive in the Lord or alive with us on Earth, so that we may pray for you, and your friends and family.

15 VOLUNTEER AT THE COLD NIGHT SHELTER The First United Methodist Church (FUMC) in Tarpon Springs has graciously opened its doors to families without heat, and to the homeless, during the cold winter months when the temperatures fall below 40 degrees. They will provide a warm overnight facility for those in need, along with some food and hot beverages. This occurs approximately 4 to 5 nights each winter, and some 30 to 40 people come to the shelter. Teams of volunteers from various churches and local organizations set up the facility for the night, serve food and otherwise ensure a safe and warm overnight experience. All participants are asked to leave the facility no later than 7 am the flowing morning. The volunteers then clean-up the facility and prepare it for the day s regular activities. The church is recruiting teams of volunteers to help with this effort and will be seeking donations of food and beverages on the nights when the shelter is open.
