WEEKLY MESSAGE The idea of a Sabbath (day of rest) has its roots in the Old Testament Command of God for the People of God to work only six days and rest on the seventh, paralleling the work of Creation and rest on the seventh day. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed Exodus While the Sabbath is Saturday, the Holy Apostles established Sunday (the Lord s Day) as the day to gather for the Divine Liturgy, forever linking Sunday, which is the Day of Resurrection, with the pinnacle day of Christian worship. However, it isn t my purpose to defend Sunday vs. Saturday, or even whether Christians should keep the Jewish Sabbath. My purpose is the unseen benefit of a Sabbath, whether Jewish or Christian. When the Jewish community kept the Sabbath, it wasn t only the Jews who benefited with rest. The servants, whether Jews or not, and animals, were blessed, by the Commandment of God, with a day to rest from work. I don t think we can take this reality too lightly. Still, the Jews had to care for and feed their work animals, without this work being considered a violation of the Sabbath. In fact, this point was highlighted by our Lord in His rebuttal to the Pharisees who challenged His right to heal on the Sabbath. And behold, there was a man who had a withered hand. And they asked Him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?" -- that they might accuse Him. Then He said to them, "Does not each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the manger, and lead it away to water it? Luke We no longer have servants (technically speaking) and work animals have been replaced (at least in industrialized countries) with machines. Yet, we do have a working class (so-called blue-collar workers) who accomplish much of the hard labor that the servants of old accomplished. So, when a society keeps a Sabbath today, those workers who may be Christians or may not be, are blessed with a day they can rest and spend time in prayer. If they choose not to pray, at least they can strengthen their family ties, a point which would result in a near-universal benefit to society.

EPISTLE Galatians 3:23-29; 4:1-5 B rethren, before faith came, we were confined under the law, kept under restraint until faith should be revealed. So that the law was our custodian until Christ came, that we might be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a custodian; for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise. I mean that the heir, as long as he is a child, is no better than a slave, though he is the owner of all the estate; but he is under guardians and trustees until the date set by the father. So with us; when we were children, we were slaves to the elemental spirits of the universe. But when the time had fully come, God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. GOSPEL Luke 13:10-17 A t that time, Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. And there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity for eighteen years; she was bent over and could not fully straighten herself. And when Jesus saw her, he called her and said to her, "Woman, you are freed from your infirmity." And he laid his hands upon her, and immediately she was made straight, and she praised God. But the ruler of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had healed on the sabbath, said to the people, "There are six days on which work ought to be done; come on those days and be healed, and not on the sabbath day." Then the Lord answered him, "You hypocrites! Does not each of you on the sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the manger, and lead it away to water it? And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?" As he said this, all his adversaries were put to shame; and all the people rejoiced at all the glorious things that were done by him. HOLY EUCHARIST (HOLY COMMUNION) Holy Communion is a Sacrament within the Orthodox Church and is only offered to Baptized and/or Chrismated Orthodox Christians who have prepared themselves to receive the Body and Blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. As you come to receive, please follow the direction of the Parish Council Members, Ushers, and Acolytes. We remind everyone that the Blessed Bread (Antidoron) offered at the end of the Divine Liturgy may be received by all.

Saints and Feasts of the Week ST SAVVAS, THE SACTIFIED This saint was born in 439 in a small village of Cappadocia. He entered the monastic life from childhood and was under master trainer of monastics, Euthymius the Great, the teacher of the desert. He became the spiritual Father of many monks and an instructor for the monasteries in Palestine, and was appointed leader (archimandrite) of the desert-dwellers of Palestine by the Patriarch of Jerusalem. In his old age he went to Constantinople, οn behalf of the Orthodox Faith and the dogmas of the Council of Chalcedon. Having lived ninetyfour years, he reposed in 533. The Typicon for the ecclesiastical services had its beginning in the monastery established by this righteous one. SAINT BARBARA THE GREAT MARTYR St Barbara was the daughter of a rich idolater, Dioscorus. When she came of age, she was enlightened in her pure heart and secretly believed in the Holy Trinity. About this time, Dioscorus began building a bath-house; before it was finished he was required to go away, and in his absence Barbara directed the workmen to build a third window in addition to the two her father had commanded. She also inscribed the sign of the Cross with her finger upon the marble of the bath-house, leaving the saving sign cut as deeply into the marble as if it had been done with an iron. When Dioscorus returned, he asked why the third window had been added; Barbara began to declare to him the mystery of the Trinity. Because she refused to renounce her faith, he tortured Barbara inhumanely, and after subjecting her to many sufferings he beheaded her with his own hands, in the year 290.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT AND TREASURER TO ALL PARISHIONERS We survived our seasonal slow period again without having to draw on our credit line!!! Our cash position was approximately $316,000 and our short-term liabilities were approximately $16,000. However, our stewardship and other donations are down. We need to work hard to try to improve this. We, as members of the Parish Council, believe that Father Athanasios and Father Sampson will follow the path of Father James Rousakis, continuing to draw St. Nicholas parishioners back in to our community and ultimately strengthening our Cathedral. Our long-term liabilities consist only of our unsecured Line of Credit at USAmeriBank. Last year at this time, we owed: $41,000 on our Hope Street Property; today we owe nothing, as we retired the debt! $147,000 on our Line of Credit; Today we owe $62,000. We reduced our debt on this line by $85,000 in 12 months! In fact, the last time we borrowed on the credit line was September of 2014, OVER 2 YEARS AGO! Under the leadership of Past President Nikitas Manias and President Mike Kouremetis, we were able to reduce our long term debt by $126,000 in a 12 month period......and that is something to CELEBRATE!!! Yours in Christ, Anna T. Billiris, Parish Council Treasurer Mike Kouremetis, Parish Council President All information is accurate as of September 30, 2016; therefore, October festival profits are not included.

ST NICHOLAS KITCHEN St Nicholas Kitchen is an outreach ministry which provides a hot meal and fellowship to those in need. Volunteers for cooking, serving meals and cleanup between 8:00 am and 1:00 pm - along with monetary donations for the purchase of food - are welcome and needed. Remember the book of Matthew 25:35-36:...For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me. Your assistance helps feed approximately 100 people every Monday. Thank you for your support. Please call Chris Palaidis at for further information. AN OIL OF OFFERING Following the ancient tradition of the Temple as commanded by God, Orthodox Christians bring an offering of olive oil to be burned in the Church lamps continually, serving as a reminder of the presence of the Light of God. And you shall command the children of Israel that they bring you pure oil of pressed olives for the light, to cause the lamp to burn continually (Exodus 27.20) We invite anyone to make an offering of oil to the Church, along with the names of loved ones and friends who are alive in the Lord or alive with us on Earth, so that we may pray for you, and your friends and family.

VOLUNTEER AT THE COLD NIGHT SHELTER The First United Methodist Church (FUMC) in Tarpon Springs has graciously opened its doors to families without heat, and to the homeless, during the cold winter months when the temperatures fall below 40 degrees. They will provide a warm overnight facility for those in need, along with some food and hot beverages. This occurs approximately 4 to 5 nights each winter, and some 30 to 40 people come to the shelter. Teams of volunteers from various churches and local organizations set up the facility for the night, serve food and otherwise ensure a safe and warm overnight experience. All participants are asked to leave the facility no later than 7 am the flowing morning. The volunteers then clean-up the facility and prepare it for the day s regular activities. The church is recruiting teams of volunteers to help with this effort and will be seeking donations of food and beverages on the nights when the shelter is open. The contact person for the FUMC Cold Night Shelter is Fran Antonellis and can be reached at the church by phone or ; fran@fumctarponsprings.org.
