5 COMMUNITY BOARD ELECTIONS / ΚΟΙΝΟΤΙΚΕΣ ΕΚΛΟΓΕΣ The time of year is fast approaching members of the Greek Community of Winnipeg... Community Board Elections! Members who have served for 3 years on the Community Board of Directors will be stepping down at the end of this year. We are looking for motivated members of our Community to fill the empty seats and run in the December election for the Community Board of Directors. Those eligible to run must: Desire to contribute their time and talents, and work as part of a team for the betterment of our Community! Be eighteen (18) years of age or more and have been a resident of Canada for a continuous period of Two (2) years. Be a member in good standing of the Church in the current year.* Be a person who has lived and abides by the canons and teachings of the Greek Orthodox faith. All interested persons are asked to put their name forward to the Church office. Please contact the office or any Board member if you have any questions. 6 Guidelines for PROPER PARKING within the church and MHCC parking lots: Only those with a valid handicap parking permit may park in the Handicap Parking spots. Do not park on the grass. Do not park on the sidewalk. This includes the area in front of the Church exit stairs next to Shaftesbury Boulevard. Do not park in the fire lane. Do not park in the driving lane. Do not park in the back lane. Anyone parked in a Handicap parking stall without a valid Handicap permit, parked in a fire lane, on the sidewalk, on the grass, in the driving lane, or in the back lane will receive A TICKET FROM THE CITY OF WINNIPEG. This ticket may affect your driver's license, so please park responsibly. If you have any questions or need help parking your vehicle, please see one of the church service ushers. When you visit the Church or MHCC during the week (Monday to Friday), PLEASE go to the Church office and register your vehicle; tell the office administrator the license plate number and make & model of your car. This will avoid the office confusing your vehicle with parked cars that belong to people who are not visiting the church or MHCC. 6

7 Contribution Envelope Donations For Community members who make a monetary donation/contribution, we ask that when using a Contribution Envelope to please fill out all of the information on the envelope - date, full member name, member number, amount in the envelope - so as to assist the office in properly recording your monetary contributions, so that we may provide an accurate tax receipt at the end of the year. (please refer to the example envelope image below.) 13 Church Etiquette When attending Divine Services we all have the responsibility of maintaining proper decorum and atmosphere in the church. The very first thing to keep in mind is that we are to be at Divine Services on time. The church is the House of God. Reverence and good manners are required at all times. No irreverent or irrelevant conversations should go on in the Narthex or in the church proper. There are certain times during the Divine Services when no one should be moving about, or entering the church, or being seated at a pew. Wherever a person happens to be at these moments, he or she should stop and stand reverently until the proper moment to be seated. These times are: 1. During the Doxology, while the priest is censing. 2. During the Small Entrance - The procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gospel. 3. When the priest censes the Altar, icons, and congregation throughout the Divine Liturgy. 4. During the reading of the Epistle and Gospel. 5. During the sermon. 6. During the Great Entrance - the procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gifts. 7. During the recitation of the Creed and Lord s Prayer (Our Father). 8. During the Consecration of the Holy Gifts. (Se Imnoumen) 9. During Holy Communion. To receive Holy Communion please come up the middle aisle, children first, and return to your seats via the side aisles. 10. When receiving any sacrament of the church, use your baptismal/chrismation name. 11. During any special services such as Memorials or blessing of the loaves, special doxologies, etc. The general rule is that whenever the priest is outside the Holy Altar either with the censer or for giving a blessing, there should be no movement in the church. Also, we remind everyone that we should attend the Divine Liturgy and all services of divine worship from the beginning. Please remember that Parish Council members are obligated to maintain order and decorum in the church during worship. Please try to understand us. Cooperate with us. 15 Εκκλησιαστική Εθιμοτυπία Όταν είμαστε στην εκκλησία, όλοι έχουμε την ευθύνη να κρατήσουμε την σωστή ευπρέπεια και ατμόσφαιρα του ναού. Το πρώτο πράγμα που πρέπει να θυμόμαστε είναι ότι πρέπει να είμαστε στην εκκλησία στην ώρα μας. Η εκκλησία είναι ο οίκος του Θεού. Η ευλάβεια και οι σωστοί τρόποι απαιτούνται πάντα. Δεν πρέπει να γίνεται άσχετη ή ασεβής συζήτηση στον Νάρθηκα ή μέσα στον ναό. Υπάρχουν μερικές στιγμές στις ακολουθίες που κανένας δεν πρέπει να κινείται, η να μπαίνει στην εκκλησία, η να κάθεται. Όπου και να βρίσκεται ο άνθρωπος σε αυτές τις στιγμές, πρέπει να σταματήσει και να σταθεί όρθιος με σεβασμό έως την κατάλληλη στιγμή να καθίσει. Αυτές οι στιγμές είναι, 1. Στην Δοξολογία, όταν ο ιερέας θυμιάζει. 2. Στην Μικρή Είσοδο, στην διάρκεια της πομπής του Ευαγγελίου με τα ιερόπαιδα και τον ιερέα. 3. Όταν ο ιερέας θυμιάζει το Ιερό, τις εικόνες, και τον κόσμο στην διάρκεια της Θείας Λειτουργίας. 4. Στην ανάγνωση του Αποστόλου και του Ευαγγελίου. 5. Στο κήρυγμα. 6. Στην Μεγάλη Είσοδο, στην διάρκεια της πομπής των Αγίων Δώρων με τα ιερόπαιδα και τον ιερέα. 7. Στην απαγγελία του Πιστεύω και της Κυριακής Προσευχής (Πάτερ Ημών). 8. Στην Αναφορά (καθαγίαση) Των Αγίων Δώρων (Στον ύμνο Σε Υμνούμεν). 9. Στην Θεία Κοινωνία. Για Θεία Κοινωνία, παρακαλείσθε να έρχεστε από τον μεσαίο διάδρομο (πρώτα τα παιδιά) και να επιστρέψετε στις θέσεις σας από τους πλαϊνούς διαδρόμους. 10. Όταν λαμβάνουμε ένα Μυστήριο της Εκκλησίας, χρησιμοποιούμε το βαπτιστικό μας όνομα. 11. Σε ειδικές ακολουθίες, σαν τα μνημόσυνα, τις αρτοκλασίες, ειδικές δοξολογίες, κλπ. Ο γενικός κανόνας είναι, όταν ο ιερέας είναι εκτός του Ιερού, είτε με το θυμιατό ή για να δώσει ευλογία, δεν γίνεται κίνηση στην εκκλησία. Επίσης, θυμίζουμε όλους ότι πρέπει να είμαστε στην Λειτουργία και σε όλες τις ακολουθίες από την αρχή. Μη ξεχνάτε ότι τα μέλη του συμβουλίου είναι υποχρεωμένα να κρατήσουν την τάξη και την ευπρέπεια στην εκκλησία. Ζητάμε την κατανόηση σας. Συνεργαστείτε μαζί μας. Οι ιερείς είναι εδώ να υπηρετήσουν. Η συνεργασία σας στην παρακολούθηση αυτών των κανονισμών θα μα βοηθήσει πολύ στο έργο μας να προσφέρουμε τη βοήθεια μας σε όλες τις πνευματικές ανάγκες σας. 15

God put the wiggle and curiosity in children; don t feel you have to suppress it. All are welcome! Sit somewhere where it is easier for your little ones to see and hear what is going on - even if that means you sit at the front. They tire of seeing the backs of others heads. We know how hard it is to have small children in Liturgy. Please don t be discouraged. We love you and want you here. Quietly explain the Liturgy to your children: The Small Entrance The Gospel (the Good News) coming into the world The Epistle and Gospel Readings Our message for the day The Sermon/Homily The clergy speaks about the Bible readings, the Saints, and the Holy Days The Offering (Anaphora) Bowing to our King and offering Him our gifts, that He may change them into His Body and Blood and offer them back to us 16

17 CHILDREN IN THE DIVINE LITURGY AT ST DEMETRIOS GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH Holy Communion Christ is in us and we are in Him Sing the hymns, pray, and voice the responses with the chanters and the choir. Children learn liturgical behaviour by copying you. Remember that we are here to worship Christ. If you have to temporarily leave the service with your child, feel free to use our crying room, but please come back when your child calms down. As Christ said, Let the children come to Me. Also, we encourage you to visit the church with your children on days when there is no service, so you can explain to them a few things about the church. To the members of our Community: The presence of children is a gift to the Church and a reminder that our Community is growing. Please welcome our children and give a smile of encouragement to their parents. Remember that the way we welcome children in the Church directly affects the way they respond to the Church, to Christ, and to one another. Let them know they are home! It is up to us to either encourage our children and young families or chase them away. 17

20 My Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Thoughts from our Parish Priest Every one of us could probably tell the Christmas story. We know it well. A young virgin named Mary conceives a child by the Holy Spirit. She and her betrothed, Joseph, travel to Bethlehem by order of the emperor. There Mary gives birth in a manger, because there is no room in the inn. Heavenly lights flood the earth, angels announce the good news. Shepherds leave the fields and their flocks to come see the newborn baby. Everyone is praising God. For many of us that is the extent of the Christmas story. It ends with the birth of the baby. That is, however, only part of the story. There is another part of the story that we do not often hear or tell. It is the part of the story when the angels stop singing and go back into heaven and the shepherds return to the fields. At some point Mary and Joseph will gather their things, pick up Jesus, and travel home to Nazareth. That is the part of the story that is often left untold. It is that part when everything looks like it did before the birth; when the manger is again empty, the night sky is again dark and silent, and the shepherds are again living in the fields keeping watch over their flocks. That does not, however, signal the end of Christmas. It is, rather, the beginning. Christmas really begins when we quit talking about the story and allow our lives to become the story. In a couple of days or maybe a week or after Christmas our family and friends will have returned to their homes. The leftovers will be thrown out. Decorations will be taken down. Bills will be coming in. The kids will be back in school and parents back at work. Like the shepherds we will return to the fields and flocks of our lives; to the routine of daily life. Everything will look like it did before the birth. But looks can be deceiving. Who would have ever guessed that God would become human with flesh, blood, skin, and hair, a body just like ours? Who could have imagined that a young virgin would give God human life? Who would have thought that our Savior, the Messiah, the Lord, the one for whom we have waited would come among us as a baby? We need to hear and trust that other part of the story. It tells us that the miracle of Christmas is not in the virgin birth, the heavenly light, the angelic appearances, or the songs of heavenly host. The miracle of Christmas is in you. The invisible God is now seen in a human face. The eternal Word is now spoken by a human tongue. Sacred touch is now given by human hands. Yours is the face. Yours is the tongue. Yours are the hands. The glorious exchange of gifts has been completed in the birth of Jesus. God has given us divinity and we have given God humanity. All of this happens, Luke tells us, in the most ordinary of places and circumstances. It happens even as a government orders a census and taxation. It happens in the midst of 20

21 Thoughts from our Parish Priest travels, crowds, and over-booked motels. It happens in the darkness and fear of an unknown future. It happens with the birth of a baby. It happens while working the night shift. Jesus birth did not take the shepherds out of the fields or away from the sheep. Before Jesus was born they were shepherds living in the fields keeping watch over their flocks by night. After Jesus was born they were shepherds living in the fields keeping watch over their flocks by night. Jesus birth does not allow us to escape the reality of our life and world. It is just the opposite. Jesus is born into the circumstances of our life and world. There is no place you go or circumstance you encounter in which Jesus is not being born. Look at your life. What do you see? Name the reality, whatever it might be, because that is a place in which Jesus is being born, a place where God s divinity meets your humanity. He is born in the joys, celebrations, and thanksgivings of your life. He is born in the sorrow, losses, and griefs of your life. He is born in times of hopes and fears, in your words and in your silence. He is born in your successes and accomplishments as well as your failures and disappointments. He is born in times of heavenly transcendence as well as earthly immanence. The salvation of God s presence, love, and healing fills every aspect of your life. So let the angels depart and the shepherds return to the fields. Let the sky become dark and silent. Let the Holy Family go home. Let Christmas become real. The manger of his birth is not in Bethlehem. Your life is the manger of Jesus birth and that, as the angel says, is good news of great joy. Merry Christmas everyone. 22 Church Iconography Program Dear Members and Friends, our Iconography project is moving well. What is left is the north wall of the church (Old Testament figures), as well as the upper row of icons for the Iconostasis. All the remaining icons will be installed, but some of them have yet to be donated. The original prices of the icons have not changed. The price for an individual saint (lower half of the north wall) is $2,500. The price of the icons on the iconostasis is $2,500. Remember you can also make a general donation toward the iconography of the church, as many people have done already. Another option is donating an icon as a group. Dear parents and community members, 2018 CHRISTMAS FAMILY As you know, each Christmas the Sunday School students assist a family in need in Winnipeg. This year the family chosen for us is a mother and her seven children. The children range in age from sixteen to three, and despite extreme stress and poverty several of the children are on the honour roll at their schools, and their social worker describes them as the most polite children she has ever met. The two oldest boys, ages sixteen and fourteen, worked over the summer to contribute to the family income and to help pay for their sports equipment for school. Their balance and achievement is all the more remarkable when you learn that the previous Christmas the family was evicted from their home because their father was extremely violent, and although the mother tried to end the relationship, the father would repeatedly break into the house, smashing doors and windows to obtain access. Because the family had nowhere to go except to the children s grandmother s tiny home, they had to leave most of their belongings, and have spent this year trying to start over. Despite this, the children are excelling. The family s social worker is helping them to compile a list of needed items: food, clothes, shoes, soap, a vacuum cleaner and other cleaning supplies, basic necessities like toilet paper, and games, books, and toys for the children. Please help our children to see the people behind the poverty in Winnipeg, and be as generous as you can. WAYS TO HELP: 28

Please keep the family in your daily prayers during Advent, and help your children to remember to pray for them. Take the tag from the tree, purchase the NEW item it asks for, and return the item together with the tag attached, to the Church hall. THE ITEMS SHOULD BE RETURNED UNWRAPPED. Please do not substitute items without checking with Victoria Marckx first in order to avoid duplication. DONATE CASH: See Victoria Marckx for this. We will need cash for perishable items for the family s dinner, and for other items that are needed. Larger ticket gifts (bedding, vacuum cleaner, etc.) can be purchased easily if all donate some cash. If you do not want to shop, but want to help, this is the way to do it. Victoria will happily shop for you! HELP WRAP GIFTS AS THEY ARE RECORDED: We keep a record of the gifts bought per person, and make certain that they are both new items, and appropriate for the person receiving them. This means that we need the gifts brought to us unwrapped, but also that we then have to wrap them a HUGE task! The Greek Folk Dancers of Manitoba The Greek Folk Dancers of Manitoba (aka KEFI Dancers) is a Not-For-Profit Organization that endeavours to raise awareness and promote Greek cultural through dance, song and music. We believe that the exposure and understanding of one s culture will encourage our youth to preserve their Greek heritage for many years to come. The group is often called upon to perform dances at local and national events, promoting the Winnipeg Greek Community across the country. Recent performances include St Mary s Academy, the Regina Greek Festival and of course Folklorama. Dance performances and instruction require specialized education and costumes which create significant financial pressure on the group. To assist with expenses, KEFI will be hosting a variety of fundraising events. 38 Moments with the Elders Today's feature will introduce Gerontissa Anna. Born Anastasia to pious parents Ioannis and Dimitra Yiavanoglou in Panermo Asia Minor. Later the family made their home in Drama, Greece where Anastasia was taking care of her eight siblings because their parents were working. From her childhood she loved Christ and His Holy Mother and kept all fasts. She never ate meat. She never went to school, she knew not how to read or write but when she was praying at night she would hear angels singing. When she was 30 years old she married Ioanni, a man who was tending their sheep against the will of her parents and was disowned by her family. One week into the marriage and her husband left her. Leaving her pregnant and in great distress. However she never uttered bitter word towards him, saying that "God allowed it" and she forgave him wishing him well. In her pain she tried to end her life by throwing herself in the lake where she heard the sound of wings and the "voice" saying to her "how can you destroy such a soul?". It was her guardian Angel who saved her life she would testify later. After this incident she asked help from her aunt Sofia and together they raised her daughter Veneta. Up early every morning to pray and then to the field working hard in the tobacco fields. She loved God and upon her pilgrimage to the island of Tinos she had a vision of our Lady and heard the "voice" tell her to go to Jerusalem. That she did, and meeting with the Abbot Amfilochios of Hozeva was baptized in the Jordan and tonsured receiving the name Anna. Attending the Divine Liturgy she would see Geronta Georgio Karslidi and she would say to the sisters "how come you are sitting? The Geronta is here". She had the gift of meekness and although very poor she would say "I'm queen". Her life was pure and she even visited heaven, had visions, and a great relationship with the saints. Her prayers were very simple, addressing the Saints, this is sister Anna Saint Alexie, Saint Panteleimon and she would commemorate all the Saints very lovingly. A woman of great patience and compassion, she would testify that she never got tired as a nun, and even her garments were sweet smelling. She visited Jerusalem five times and was blessed to the end of her life with many spiritual gifts that she shared with the people. She fell asleep in the Lord at the age of 95 years in May she intercede for our beautiful Community always! With the love of Christ. Debby Vlahos 38

39 Λιγες Στιγμες με τους Πατερες Σημερα θα γνωρισουμε την Γεροντισσα Αννα. Γεννηθηκε Αναστασια Γιοβανογλου απο γονεις ευλαβεις τον Ιωαννη και την Δημητρα. στο Πανορμο της Μικρας Ασιας και εγκαταστθηκαν στην Δραμα. Οι γονεις εργαζονταν και φροντιζε τα οκτω αδελφια της. Απο μικρη αγαπουσε τον Χριστο και την Παναγια, κρατουσε νηστειες και δεν εφαγε ποτε κρεας. Σχολειο δεν πηγε και δεν εμαθε να διαβαζει. Τα βραδυα προσευχοτανε και ακουγε αγγελικες ψαλμωδιες. Στα τριαντα της παντρευτηκε τον Γιαννη που ηταν βοσκος στα προβατα τους παρα την θεληση των γονιων της και την εδιωξαν απο το σπιτι. Μια εβδομαδα μετα τον γαμο εφυγε ο συζυγος της και δεν γυρισε ποτε. Ποτε δεν ειπε κακο λογο εναντιον του και ελεγε <<εγω τον συγχωρω αφου το επετρεψε ο Θεος αυτο εγινε ας ειναι καλα>>. Μονη και εγκαταλειμενη περιμενοντας και παιδακι απελπιστηκε και επεσε στην λιμνη να τελειωση. Τοτε οπως διηγητε η ιδια, ενοιωσα ενα φτερουγισμα και μια φωνη <<τετοια ψυχη πως θα την ριξεις στον βουρκο?>> ηταν ο φυλακας αγγελος μου. Πηρε δυναμη και ζητησε βοηθεια απο την θεια της την Σοφια και με την βοηθεια της μεγαλωσε το κοριτσακι της την Βενετα. Αγαπουσε πολυ τον Θεο και ξυπνουσε πρωι για προσευχη και μετα στην σκληρη δουλεια στα καπνα για να μην λειψει τιποτα στι κοριτσακι της. Οταν πηγε στην Τηνο ειδε ζωντανη την Παναγια και ακουσε <<φωνη>> να παει στα Ιεροσολυμα. Βαπτιστηκε στον Ιορδανη και πηρε το ονομα Αννα εκει γνωρισε τον ηγουμενο του Χοζεβα Αμφιλοχιο κια εγινε μοναχη. Ηθελε να δει και το Αγιο Πνευμα και το ειδε εν ειδει Περιστερας. Στο εκκλησακι του γεροντος Γεωργιου Καρσλιδη ελεγε στις μοναχες <<δεν ειδατε τον Γεροντα τοση ωρα σας κοιταζε και σεις καθοσασταν>>. Τοσο καθαρη ηταν η ψυχη της. Ειχε οραματα και το διορατικο χαρισμα και σου ελεγε το ονομα σου χωρις να σε γνωριζει. Καποτε ηρπαγη στον Παραδεισο. Εζεισε πολυ φτωχικα αλλα ελεγε <<βασιλισσα ειμαι>>. Προσευχοταν με απλοτητα η αδελφη Αννα σας παρακαλει Αγιε Αλεξειε, Αγιε Παντελεημων και μνημονευε ολους τους Αγιους. Μετα την κουρα της ως μεγαλοσχημη ελεγε <<εχω ευλογια επανω μου δεν κουραζομαι ουτε οι νηστεις με εξαντλουν, πεταω.>> Τα ρασα της μοσχοβολουσαν. Εκοιμηθη το 1998 σε ηλικια 95 ετων.
