President smessage A fresh start for a promising New Year. My Dear fellow Cretans, 2009 can best be described by many of us as a year of disappointment. The meltdown of the world economy affected nearly every individual in the U.S. from the rich to the poor, the young and the old, male and female, black and white. People in all walks of life despaired at seeing their savings dwindle to a mere fraction of their original value. Every one of us had to readjust our lifestyle to the new economic realities that now face us. I was deeply saddened to learn of the attempt to burn down the Jewish Synagogue in the old Venetian harbor in Chania. The terrorist act almost succeeded in destroying one of the most historic landmarks of Crete and, along with it, the entire old city of Chania. Their first attempt was followed by a second. That also failed, but the damage was heavy. With all that my fellow Cretans, I continue to remain optimistic for a better future and a new beginning as we enter 2010. I am optimistic that the worst of the economic downturn is behind us and that we have turned the corner and the wind is on our back. Already our PAA investment accounts have recouped part of the losses suffered in 2008 and early 2009. I am also optimistic that people throughout the world will find compassion and understanding for their fellow man and try to live together in peace in spite of our differences. For our association, I feel very optimistic when I see the high level of energy of our dedicated Board members, the passion of our young people in the PYA, and the strong commitment of our members throughout the country. I am optimistic when I see people in our districts and chapters work so hard giving their time, money and energy to carry on our mission. I am filled with emotion when George Angelakis of Philadelphia, expresses his passion and love for his Cretan heritage and, with tears in his eyes, commends our association as the strongest symbol of that heritage. And, I am so encouraged to see our own Beth Doulgerakis of Atlanta take the initiative and offer, every Friday, Cretan dance lessons to boys and girls, some of Cretan heritage but mostly non-cretans. She cooks for them and after they eat, she teaches them to dance. During the week, Beth sews and embroiders their Cretan customs. What is remarkable is that Beth, beside the fact that she is married to John Doulgerakis from Rethymno, has no other connection to Crete. I am very thankful to George and Beth and to all of our members who go one step beyond to carry out the 80-year old mission of our association. To all our members and to our Cretan community and friends, I wish you the best in 2010 with peace and human understanding, health and promise. ΜήνυμαΠροέδρου Μια καινούργια αρχή για ένα ελπιδοφόρο Νέο Έτος. Αγαπητοί μου Συμπατριώτες, Το 2009 μπορεί να περιγραφεί σαν μια απογοητευτική χρονιά. Η κατάρρευση της παγκόσμιας οικονομίας είχε επιπτώσεις σχεδόν σε όλο τον πληθυσμό στις ΗΠΑ. Άνδρες και γυναίκες, νέοι και ηλικιωμένοι, πλούσιοι και φτωχοί ανεξάρτητα από φυλής και χρώματος όλοι επηρεάστηκαν. Οι άνθρωποι όλων των κοινωνικών στρωμάτων είδαν τις αποταμιεύσεις τους να ελαττώνονται σε μεγάλο βαθμό. Καθένας από μας έπρεπε να προσαρμόσει τον τρόπο ζωής του στις νέες οικονομικές πραγματικότητες που έχουμε να αντιμετωπίσουμε. Με μεγάλη λύπη πληροφορήθηκα την προσπάθεια πυρπόλησης της Εβραϊκή Συναγωγής στο παλαιό Ενετικό λιμάνι στα Χανιά. Η τρομοκρατική πράξη αυτή έθεσε σε κίνδυνο ένα από τα πιο ιστορικά ορόσημα της Κρήτης. Η πρώτη προσπάθειά τους ακολουθήθηκε και με δεύτερη που απέτυχε επίσης, αλλά η ζημία ήταν μεγάλη. Παρά ταύτα, αγαπητοί Κρήτες, συνεχίζω να παραμένω αισιόδοξος για ένα καλύτερο μέλλον και μια νέα αρχή με τον ερχομό του 2010. Είμαι αισιόδοξος ότι τα χειρότερα έχουν περάσει, οι μεγαλύτερες δυσκολίες είναι πια πίσω μας και ούριος άνεμος επιτέλους άρχισε να φυσά. Ήδη οι οικονομικές επενδύσεις της PAA έχουν ανακτήσει μέρος των απωλειών που σημείωσαν το 2008 και νωρίς το 2009. Είμαι επίσης αισιόδοξος ότι οι άνθρωποι σε όλο τον κόσμο θα βρουν κατανόηση και οίκτο για το συνάνθρωπό τους και θα προσπαθήσουν να ζήσουν μαζί με ειρήνη παρά τις διαφορές μας. Για την Ένωσή μας, αισθάνομαι πολύ αισιόδοξος όταν βλέπω το υψηλό μέγεθος της ενέργειας που αφιερώνουν τα μέλη μας και τα μέλη του Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου, του πάθους των νέων μας στην ΠΝA, και την ισχυρή υποστήριξη των μελών μας σε όλη τη χώρα. Είμαι αισιόδοξος όταν βλέπω τους ανθρώπους μας στις Περιφέρειες και στα Σωματεία μας να εργάζονται σκληρά, να δίνουν το χρόνο τους και τα χρήματα τους, λαμβάνω ενέργεια από αυτό για να συνεχίσω την αποστολή μας. Με γεμίζουν με συγκίνηση τα λόγια του κ. Γιώργου Αγγελάκη από την Φιλαδέλφεια, που εκφράζουν το πάθος και την αγάπη του για την κρητική κληρονομιά του, όταν με δάκρυα στα μάτια του, επαινεί την ένωσή μας ως ισχυρότερο σύμβολο αυτής της κληρονομιάς. Ενθαρρύνομαι από την Beth Δουλγεράκη από την Ατλάντα, που παίρνει την πρωτοβουλία και προσφέρει, κάθε Παρασκευή, μαθήματα κρητικού χορού στα αγόρια και τα κορίτσια, μερικά Κρητικής καταγωγής αλλά και άλλα συνήθως μη-κρητικής καταγωγής. Τους μαγειρεύει πρώτα και αφότου τρώνε, τους διδάσκει χορό. Κατά τη διάρκεια της εβδομάδας, η Beth ράβει και κεντά επίσης τις Κρητικές στολές τους. Αυτό που είναι αξιοπρόσεκτο είναι ότι Beth, εκτός από το γεγονός ότι είναι παντρεμένη με το Γιάννη Δουλγεράκη από το Ρέθυμνο δεν έχει καμία άλλη σύνδεση στην Κρήτη. Είμαι πολύ ευγνώμων στον Γιώργο και τη Beth καθώς και τα σε όλα μέλη μας που πηγαίνουν ακόμα ένα βήμα μπροστά την 80 χρονών αποστολή της ένωσής μας. Σε όλα τα μέλη μας, στην Κρητική κοινότητα και τους φίλους μας, εύχομαι ένα καλύτερο 2010, με ειρήνη, κατανόηση, υγεία και γεμάτο υποσχέσεις. SpecialReportΡεπορτάζ PAA National Convention Resolutions Resolutions passed on Sunday, July 19, 2009 Mr. Stavros Semanderes was elected to serve as Convention Chair. He then appointed John Manos to Co-chair Convention. At least one PYA member shall serve on the IT Committee. Every household is required to receive and pay for at least one copy of the KPHTH Magazine (to be placed on the ballot). The IT Committee shall be authorized a $32,000 budget from the Budget Committee for the next two years (to be presented to the budget committee for approval). The Constitution shall be amended to eliminate the requirement to print all chapter officer names in the March issue of KPHTH Magazine (to be placed on the ballot). Resolutions passed on Tuesday, July 21, 2009 Amend article 7 paragraph 6 of the PAA Bylaws, The Investments and Fundraising Board to read as follows: Accounts may be either cash or margin at the discretion of the Investment Board. Investments are authorized only in CD s, government secured instruments, stocks, securities, and Exchange Traded Funds (ETF s) of investment grade and their derivatives. The Investment Board may pursue alternative investment strategies, i.e. those investment strategies that capitalize on expected advances, declines and non-directional moves in the market in addition to traditional long only investments. Add paragraph 7 to read as follows: No member of the Investment Board may benefit directly or indirectly from the purchase or sale of any security in any investment portfolio during the period of time of their membership on the Board or at any time thereafter. The PAA shall establish the Pancretan Professionals Society as a permanent committee of the Pancretan Association of America with full representation on the Board of Directors. The PAA shall consider an additional fundraising option for the Minoan Village, Inc, Atsipopoulo project through sales of timesharing if the Grant from the Greek government is approved and provided this concept meets requirements of the Greek investment and subsidy laws. The 1 st District is permitted to elect a new District Governor following this convention. The constitutional requirement that a candidate for office must be present to accept the nomination is waived for this, the 41st PAA National Convention only, except as it applies to the office of President and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Vice Presidents. Resolutions passed on Wednesday, July 22, 2009 Mrs. Maria Makropoulos is elected to serve as the PAA Auditor General. Subject to the approval of its tax or legal advisors, the PAA shall purchase $5,000 of stock in the newly established company which will provide ferryboat service from Pireas to Rethymon. The PAA shall endeavor to raise $50,000 dedicated to the purchase of a mini-bus to service the senior citizens home of Aghios Eleftherios in Atsipopoulo, Crete. If the mini-bus is purchased before the $50,000 is raised, all collected funds would be deposited into the PAA Philanthropic Fund. The PAA shall establish the Dr. Constantine Papadakis Leadership Award in honor and memory of the late Taki Papadakis, President of Drexel University. The PAA Board shall submit to the Periferia of Crete government representatives in writing the expectations by the PAA of the expedient implementation of the infrastructure feasibility study for the central highway project of Crete KOAK. SpecialReportΡεπορτάζ My (Big Fat) Greek Christmas by Helen Mondloch Several years ago when Hollywood released My Big Fat Greek Wedding, my brother Kostas refused to see it, even while other members of the family were flocking to theaters for a repeat viewing. Why patronize a movie, Kostas reasoned, that stereotypes and ridicules our culture? As for me, the movie made me laugh so hard that my big, fat Greek nose nearly locked in the up-curled position. Of course, I never needed a blockbuster film to illuminate the comic fervor peculiar to the Greek experience. Once when I was young, for instance, an American friend had come to visit while my mother was talking in Greek on the telephone. Observing my mom slicing the air with her hands and speaking in loud, unrestrained superlatives, my friend asked with some unease why she was so upset. I answered that my mother was not upset at all; she was just a Greek talking on the telephone. In the modest New Jersey neighborhood where I grew up in the 60s, my household was something of a sideshow. I doubt if many of our neighbors could even distinguish us from our extended clan, or the many Greek friends who came and went without knocking. With Yaya and Papoo (Grandma and Grandpa) living across the street, and our cousins just down the block, the front door was constantly clanging, and the air perpetually laden with the aroma of lamb and potatoes. For this we could thank my aproned Yaya, who was always dashing across Fairmount Avenue with a pan of food fresh from the oven. The activity level around our house reached an especially feverish pitch on holidays when, weather permitting, the festivities often spilled outdoors. I ll never forget the curious faces that passed our house, onlookers to the festive disarray of our urban side-yard. At its center, baby lambs turned on their spits, spewing forth great clouds of their smoky aroma. Along the edges was a feast writ large, teeming with a wide assortment of remarkable fare. Sometimes neighbors joined our celebration, marveling over spinach and feta cheese creations never before experienced. The more daring ones would clasp shoulders and kick up their heels to the lively strains of the bouzoukia that bellowed from our speakers. After a few glasses of Retsina, my dad always performed a solo version of the Greek line dance, a bottle balanced precariously on his head. Some memories are less quaint: Each year just before Easter, for instance, my sister Anna and I would come home from school to the noxious and distinctly scatological odor of magiritsa--tripe soup, a green-gray and highly revered Grecian delicacy-- bubbling on the stove top in a massive cauldron. The occasion always sent us clamoring for the door, gagging and sobbing, prompting the grown-ups to sneer and call us myara--spoiled, sniveling wimps. Maybe it s no wonder that as an adult, I m sensitive to strong sensory stimuli, including noxious odors of all sorts. It s no wonder, too, that I approach the holidays with a touch of hesitation. Bring on the feasting and the revelry, yes--but how about serving up some silent night, as well? How about letting me savor a two-minute conversation with one of the cousins without some aunt barging in to tempt me with another oozing hunk of baklava? The uproarious character of my family has been accentuated these past two decades by the calmer, more orderly universe of my husband s family, born and bred in the American heartland. With eight grown children and eighteen grandkids among them, Mondloch family gatherings are lively events, to be sure. But with the Mondlochs, it s generally the children who cause all of the commotion. Among the Mondloch adults, there is a shared desire to keep things reasonably sane, which results in a noticeable structure imposed at all our gatherings. At Easter celebrations, for instance, there is the well-regulated egg-cracking contest. (The game has a long tradition in many countries, including Greece.) We begin the ritual only after Grandma has reiterated a handful of important rules--no barricading the egg with your hand, no unnecessary roughness, and so forth. At Christmas, the opening of gifts is likewise carefully orchestrated, as is the holiday shopping that precedes it. We draw names, observe spending limits, even compile a list of buying suggestions. All of which dramatically underscores the pandemonium of holidays spent with the Greeks, where Christmas gifts and Easter eggs are laid to waste with the collective passion of our noble ancestry. I don t know any American-born Greek who doesn t long for a bit of law and order to rub off on his or her Greek family. My sister, my brother, my cousins, and I and even Toula in My Big Fat Greek Wedding--all yearned for more structure and less drama. As I near midlife, however, and begin to conquer the demons urging me to rebel against my upbringing, I experience a kind of transformation. 10 KPHTH DECEMBER 2009 - JANUARY 2010
SpecialReportΡεπορτάζ Baklava, a traditional Greek dessert, is made from Phyllo dough, walnuts, cinnamon and other delicious ingredients, making it hard to resist--especially from a pushy aunt. More and more, I recognize that when it comes to family, these are the souls with whom I start and finish-- the alpha and omega of my earthly existence. As descendants of the rugged village folk featured abundantly in faded photographs and often-told tales, we share a bond much greater than ourselves. Our kinship is nurtured by the collective memories of Holiday Past, those dizzying occasions that commanded the neighborhood s attention. Among these is a powerful moment of family communion that stands out in my memory above all others. My recollection takes me back to Christmas 1971, when I was ten years old. The family had all gathered on Christmas Eve for the usual raucous celebration at Aunt Mary s house in Philadelphia. Here we awaited the arrival of Saint Nick--for us, a youthful and spirited buffoon who sported a phonier-than-usual beard and a pillow shoved conspicuously beneath an ill-fitting suit: Uncle Lucky in disguise. (Unlike his red suit, my uncle s nickname was a perfect fit for him. Story has it that my sister, as a toddler, shortened his Greek name Theodorakis to a word she could more easily pronounce; but we always knew he was Lucky for other reasons as well.) When he finally arrived, Santa strutted his stuff, ceremoniously pouring several trash bags of presents all over the floor while grown-ups and kids alike disintegrated in laughter. (Only my youngest cousin Lisa, then three, took Uncle Lucky for the real Santa.) His packages unleashed, Santa announced that he now had a big surprise for ev-er-y-one! As he swiftly departed for his sleigh, the room filled with a bewildered hush. For two or three long minutes, we wondered what Santa had in store for us. With a bust of cold air, he finally reemerged. This time, two figures stepped in behind him. One had familiar silvered hair; the other was leaning heavily upon a cane. After a splitsecond of stunned silence, there arose a shrill clamor as everyone swarmed in a mad rush to embrace those figures in the doorway--yaya and Papoo, who had moved back to Greece the previous year and had been sorely missed. The joy of our reunion was upstaged only for a moment when Aunt Mary, now acutely flushed and gasping for air, collapsed to the floor. But she soon revived, thanks to those who rushed to her aid, fanning her with their cocktail napkins. The rest of the family, too, eventually recovered emotional equilibrium (relatively speaking).but I know that no one was ever the same following that moment when our hearts skipped, then pulsed as one. CoverStoryΕξώφυλλο Archbishop Eirinaios of Crete Visits America It was with a sense of deep Cretan pride and tremendous enthusiasm that the PAA and the whole of the Greek omogeneia welcomed our beloved Archbishop of Crete Eirinaios on December 4, 2009 to the United States. Archbishop Eirinaios has dedicated his life, in his deeds, to the salvation of the Orthodox Christians of our beloved Crete. From the youth to senior citizens, from the poor to the sick, his words and deeds have instilled a sense of urgency to celebrate our faith but with the noblest of Cretan passion. His Eminence, invited by the Onassis Public Benefit Foundation in N.Y., celebrated the inauguration of the Holy Icons Exhibit entitled The Origins of El Greco: Icon Painting in Venetian Crete. The artistic works, an extraordinary group of 15th and 16th century paintings including early works by El Greco, are well venerated holy icons, most of which had left the island for the first time in their history. For his visit, the Pancretan Association of America, in collaboration with the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, planned a very rich and interesting series of events to honor Archbishop Eirinaios, who was accompanied by the Chancellor of the Archdiocese, Archimandrite Makarios Griniezakis. His Eminence was warmly welcomed at JFK Airport by Archbishop Demetrios, clergy, airport protocol officers, diplomats for the Consulates of Greece and Cyprus, PAA President Ted Manousakis, Mrs. Manousakis and PAA national board members. During his stay, His Eminence was hosted by the PAA and the Onassis Foundation represented by Ambassador Loukas Tsilas, President of the U.S. branch. The following morning, Archbishop Eirinaios officiated at the Cathedral of St. Demetrios in Jamaica, N.Y. alongside his spiritual son, Father Konstantine Kalogridis, followed by a wonderful reception where he had the opportunity to meet with children from the community. He later visited the Patriarchal Monastery of St. Irene Chryssovalantou in Astoria, N.Y. The Archbishop s primary goal for his visit to the U.S. was to seek a better understanding of the Hellenic American children s thoughts of faith and spirituality. To that end, His Eminence took the opportunity to meet several youth groups including the Pancretan Youth of America. In a round-table type forum, issues of education, Hellenism, and social problems with our young members were discussed. He reminded the youth of their personal 12 KPHTH DECEMBER 2009 - JANUARY 2010

The Archbishop, who is fluent in English, encouraged them to recognize and embrace their unique talents and role in the Church in order to willingly and responsibly respond to the calling of God. The symposium lasted for nearly two hours with the youth absorbing the open discussion while being given a deeper understanding of faith among Orthodox youth. That evening following the youth symposium, a traditional Cretan reception dinner was held at the Omonoia Chapter, hosted by President Charlie Marangoudakis and his members at the Cretan House in Astoria, N.Y. The event celebrated the Archbishop s visit while the youth played Cretan music and danced in the presence of nearly 300 guests. The reception and the award ceremony were attended by PAA President Ted Manousakis, 2nd Vice President Nickos Kastrinakis, Women s Executive Director Maria Stradoudakis, District II Governor Zaharoula Marmataki, District I Governor Dimitris Hatzis, Philanthropic Chair Stavros Antonakakis, Auditor General Maria Makropoulos, Scholarship Chair Rema Manousakis, the presidents of all PAA chapters of greater New York, and many Cretans from around the country. After dinner the Archbishop was presented with a gift from the PAA by President Manousakis, a unique monogrammed pen in appreciation for his tireless work and support of the Cretans abroad. Mr. Nikos Kastrinakis presented His Eminence with the US Congressional award, signed by Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney in recognition of his achievements as a spiritual leader as well as for his efforts toward Greek-American friendship. Archbishop Eirinaios shared that he was deeply moved by the love and respect given to him by Greek-Americans. He also added that the major distinction awarded him by the U.S. Congress belongs primarily to the Archdiocese of Crete, its clergy, and the devout people of Crete. Sunday December the 6th, His Eminence celebrated Mass in memory of St. Nicholas at the Cathedral of St. Archbishop of Crete Eirinaios, was presented with a gift from the PAA by President Manousakis, a unique monogrammed pen in appreciation for his tireless work and support of the Cretans abroad Nicholas in Flushing, N.Y. The mass was attended by nearly 3,000 who came to receive his blessings. The Archbishop, in his inspiring speech, addressed the issue of the meaning of life in today s materialistic world as well as the lack of real communication between people. He added that St. Nicholas does not say I, me, mine, myself, but we, us, ours. An emotive reception took place after the liturgy. His Eminence and the parishioners enjoyed carols and traditional songs by the youth choir of the St. Nicholas community. On Sunday evening, the PAA Chapter Minos held a reception honoring The Archbishop of Crete Eirinaios, exchanges ideas with Lavrys members Archbishop Eirinaios. Minos President Gregoris Kavalos cordially welcomed His Eminence and commended his many virtues and attributes. On Monday, December the 7th, Archbishop Eirinaios visited the School of St. Demetrios in Astoria, where he was greeted by the teachers and pupils and discussed the Greek and Orthodox education in America. Later, he met with Archbishop Demetrios at the Archdiocese headquarters in Manhattan, where a luncheon took place in his honor. In the afternoon, he visited the Church of St. Ioannis the Theologian in Tenafly, NJ. There, he talked with young Greek- Americans and discussed issues pertaining to the Greek-American identity, culture, religion, and tradition. On Monday evening His Eminence participated in a doxology in his honor at the Cathedral of St. John the Theologian in New Jersey followed by an official banquet hosted by His Eminence Metropolitan Evangelos of the Holy Metropolis of New Jersey. The banquet was sponsored by Mr. Stavros Antonakakis and Mrs. Maria Makropoulos and their families in memory of their parents, the late Reverend Father Joseph and Presbytera Antonakakis. The Antonakakis family has long been associated with his Eminence as he was their spiritual guide and mentor during their childhood in Crete. On Tuesday, December 8th, the Archbishop attended a private luncheon hosted by PAA President Ted Manousakis and Mrs. Manousakis at Anthos restaurant of renowned Cretan chef, Michael Psilakis. The luncheon, also attended by his Eminence Archbishop Demetrios and several other dignitaries, provided an opportunity to further discuss ways to strengthen the ties between the Archdiocese of Crete and the PAA. Later that evening, His Eminence Eirinaios inaugurated the Icon Exhibition along with the newly appointed Greek Minister of Culture and Tourism, Mr. Pavlos Yeroulanos. The inauguration festivities, which took place at the St. Regis Hotel in New York, were attended by many notables from the fields of arts, letters, science, diplomacy, business, and politics. The PAA was represented by President Theodore Manousakis and Mrs. Manousakis. At the inauguration, the President of the Onassis Foundation, Mr. Anthony Papadimitriou, along with the Minister of Culture, Mr. Yeroulanos, praised the personality, the ethos as well as the vision of Archbishop Eirinaios. They also underscored the importance of presenting the opportunity for a wider world audience to appreciate this extraordinary exhibit. Unfortunately, the many events and festivities planned by Mr. John Manos, 1st PAA Vice President and his committee for the following two days in order to welcome and honor His Eminence in Chicago were cancelled due to inclement weather. Archbishop Eirinaios was unable to travel to the Midwest and, therefore, concluded his trip and returned to Greece on Thursday, December 10. During his visit, those who had the opportunity to see and hear His Eminence had a transformational experience. He is a man of deep faith, great humility, and unconditional love for his fellow man. CoverStoryΕξώφυλλο Ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Κρήτης Ειρηναίος επισκέπτεται την Αμερική Με αίσθημα βαθειάς κρητικής υπερηφάνειας και μεγάλο ενθουσιασμό, η Παγκρητική Ένωση και σύσσωμη η ελληνική ομογένεια καλωσόρισε τον αγαπημένο μας Αρχιεπίσκοπο Κρήτης Ειρηναίο στις 4 Δεκεμβρίου 2009 στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες. Ο Σεβασμιώτατος έχει αφιερώσει τη ζωή του εμπράκτως στη σωτηρία των Ορθοδόξων Χριστιανών της αγαπημένης μας Κρήτης. Στους νέους και στους ηλικιωμένους, στους πλούσιους και στους φτωχούς, τα κηρύγματά του και οι πράξεις του έχουν εμφυσήσει το αίσθημα της άμεσης διατήρησης της πίστης μας σε συνδυασμό με το πιο ευγενές πάθος για την Κρήτη. Ο Σεβασμιώτατος, προσκεκλημένος του Κοινωφελούς Ιδρύματος «Αλέξανδρος Ωνάσης» στη Νέα Υόρκη, εγκαινίασε την Έκθεση των Ιερών Εικόνων με τίτλο «Οι Απαρχές του Ελ Γκρέκο: Η Ζωγραφική των Εικόνων στη Βενετοκρατούμενη Κρήτη». Τα έργα τέχνης, ένα εξαιρετικό δείγμα της τεχνοτροπίας του 15 ου και 16 ου αιώνα, που συμπεριλαμβάνει πρώιμα έργα του Ελ Γκρέκο, είναι όλα άγιες εικόνες, οι περισσότερες από τις οποίες βγαίνουν από το νησί για πρώτη φορά στα χρονικά. Για την επίσκεψη του Αρχιεπισκόπου, η Παγκρητική Ένωση, σε συνεργασία με την Ιερά Αρχιεσκοπή Αμερικής, σχεδίασε ένα πλούσιο και ενδιαφέροντα κύκλο εκδηλώσεων για να τιμήσουμε τον Αρχιεπίσκοπο Ειρηναίο, ο οποίος συνοδευόταν από τον Πρωτοσύγκελο της Αρχιεπισκοπής, Αρχιμανδρίτη Μακάριο Γρινιεζάκη. Ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος δέχθηκε θερμό καλωσόρισμα στο Αεροδρόμιο Κέννεντυ από τον Αρχιεπίσκοπο Αμερικής Δημήτριο, τον κλήρο, τους επικεφαλής πρωτοκόλλου του αεροδρομίου, τους διπλωμάτες των Προξενείων της Ελλάδας και της Κύπρου, τον Πρόεδρο της ΠΕΑ Θεόδωρο Μανουσάκη, την κυρία Μανουσάκη και τα μέλη του Εθνικού Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου της Παγκρητικής. Κατά την παραμονή του, ο Σεβασμιώτατος φιλοξενήθηκε από την ΠΕΑ και το Ίδρυμα Ωνάση που εκπροσωπήθηκε από τον Πρέσβη Λουκά Τσίλα, Πρόεδρο του παραρτήματος Αμερικής. Το επόμενο πρωί, ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Ειρηναίος λειτούργησε στον Καθεδρικό Ναό του Αγίου Δημητρίου στη Jamaica, NY. μαζί με το πνευματικό του τέκνο, τον Ιερέα Κωνσταντίνο Καλογρίδη. Ακολούθησε μια ώραια δεξίωση όπου ο κ. Ειρηναίος είχε την ευκαιρία να συναντήσει παιδιά της εκκλησι- αστικής κοινότητας. Αργότερα, επισκέφθηκε την Πατριαρχική Μονή της Αγίας Ειρήνης Χρυσοβαλάντου στην Αστόρια. Ο κύριος σκοπός της επίσκεψης του Αρχιεπισκόπου στην Αμερική ήταν να αποκτήσει αμεσότερη αντίληψη για τις σκέψεις της ελληνοαμερικανικής νεολαίας πάνω σε θέματα πίστης και πνευματικότητας. Για το λόγο αυτό, ο Σεβασμιώτατος είχε την ευκαιρία να συναντήσει αρκετές ομάδες νέων, συμπεριλαμβανομένης και της Παγκρητικής Νεολαίας. Σε ένα φόρουμ στρογγυλής τράπεζας, συζητήθηκαν θέματα εκπαίδευσης, ελληνισμού, και κοινωνικών προβλημάτων. Ο Σεβασμιώτατος επισήμανε στη νεολαία τον ιδιαίτερο ρόλο της μέσα στο θεανθρώπινο σώμα της Εκκλησίας. Ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος, που μιλάει άπταιστα αγγλικά, παρότρυνε τη νεολαία να αναγνωρίσει και να αγκαλιάσει τις αρετές της και το ρόλο της μέσα στην Εκκλησία, έτσι ώστε να ανταποκριθεί πρόθυμα και υπεύθυνα στο κάλεσμα του Θεού. Το Συμπόσιο της Νεολαίας διήρκεσε περίπου δύο ώρες, με τη νεολαία να αφομοιώνει την ανοιχτή συζήτηση, ενώ της δινόταν μια βαθύτερη κατανόηση της πίστης μέσα από το πρίσμα της ορθόδοξης νεολαίας. Το ίδιο απόγευμα, μετά από το Συμπόσιο Νεολαίας, μία παραδοσιακή κρητική δεξίωση έλαβε χώρα στο Σύλλογο «Ομόνοια», που διοργανώθηκε από τον Πρόεδρο Κυριάκο Μαραγκουδάκη και τα μέλη του στο «Κρητικό Σπίτι» στην Astoria, NY. Η δεξίωση γιόρτασε την επίσκεψη του Αρχιεπισκόπου στην Αμερική, ενώ η νεολαία έπαιξε κρητική μουσική και χόρεψε, υπό το βλέμμα περίπου 300 προσκεκλημέ- 16 KPHTH DECEMBER 2009 - JANUARY 2010

Στη δεξίωση και την τελετή απονομής βραβείου παραβρέθηκαν ο Πρόεδρος της ΠΕΑ Θεόδωρος Μανουσάκης, ο 2 ος Αντιπρόεδρος Νίκος Καστρινάκης, η Εκτελεστική Διευθύντρια Γυναικείων Θεμάτων Μαρία Στρατουδάκη, η Κυβερνήτης της 2 ης Περιφέρειας Ζαχαρούλα Μαρματάκη, ο Κυβερνήτης της 1 ης Περιφέρειας Δημήτρης Χατζής, ο Πρόεδρος της Επιτροπής Φιλανθρωπίας Σταύρος Αντωνακάκης, η Οικονομική Επόπτρια Μαρία Μακροπούλου, η Επικεφαλής της Επιτροπής Υποτροφιών Ρίμα Μανουσάκη, οι Πρόεδροι όλων των κρητικών συλλόγων της ευρύτερης Νέας Υόρκης και πολλοί Κρήτες από όλη τη χώρα. Μετά το δείπνο, ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος έλαβε το δώρο της Παγκρητικής από τον Πρόεδρο Μανουσάκη, μία ξεχωριστή μονογραμμένη πένα, σε ένδειξη ευγνωμοσύνης για τις άοκνες προσπάθειές του και την υποστήριξη των Κρητών της διασποράς. Ο κ. Νίκος Καστρινάκης επέδωσε στο Σεβασμιώτατο το βραβείο του αμερικανικού Κονγκρέσσου, υπογεγραμμένο από τη βουλευτή Carolyn B. Maloney, σε αναγνώριση των επιτυχιών του ως πνευματικού ηγέτη, καθώς και της συμβολής του στην ελληνοαμερικανική φιλία. Ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Ειρηναίος έκανε γνωστό πως συγκινήθηκε βαθύτατα από την αγάπη και το σεβασμό που έλαβε από τους Ελληνοαμερικανούς. Επίσης, πρόσθεσε ότι αυτή η μεγάλη διάκριση που του έγινε από το αμερικανικό Κονγκρέσσο ανήκει κυρίως στην Αρχιεπισκοπή Κρήτης, τον κλήρο της και τον ευσεβή κρητικό λαό. Ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος, στην εμπνευσμένη ομιλία του, αναφέρθηκε στο νόημα της ζωής στο σύγχρονο υλιστικό κόσμο, καθώς και στην απουσία πραγματικής επικοινωνίας των ανθρώπων. Πρόσθεσε ότι «ο Άγιος Νικόλαος δεν λέει εγώ, εγώ, εγώ, αλλά εμείς». Μια συγκινητική δεξίωση ακολούθησε μετά από τη λειτουργία. Ο Σεβασμιώτατος και οι ενορίτες απόλαυσαν κάλαντα και άλλα παραδοσιακά τραγούδια από τη νεανική χορωδία της κοινότητας του Αγίου Νικολάου. Το βράδυ της Κυριακής, ο Σύλλογος Κρητών «Μίνως» έδωσε δεξίωση προς τιμήν του Αρχιεπισκόπου. Ο Πρόεδρος του «Μίνως» Γρηγόρης Κάββαλος καλωσόρισε το Σεβασμιώτατο και εγκωμίασε τις πολλές αρετές και δεξιότητες του κ. Ειρηναίου. Τη Δευτέρα 7 Δεκεμβρίου, ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Ειρηναίος επισκέφθηκε το Σχολείο του Αγίου Δημητρίου στην Αστόρια, όπου του έγινε υποδοχή από τους διδάσκοντες και τους μαθητές. Είχε δε την ευκαιρία να συζητήσει θέματα ελληνορθόδοξης παιδείας στην Αμερική. Αργότερα, συναντήθηκε με τον Αρχιεπίσκοπο Δημήτριο στα γραφεία της Αρχιεπισκοπής Αμερικής στο Μανχάτταν, όπου και διοργανώθηκε γεύμα προς τιμήν του. Κατόπιν, επισκέφθηκε το Γενικό Προξενείο της Ελλάδας στη Νέα Υόρκη, συναντήθηκε με την Πρόξενο κ. Άγη Μπαλτά και χαιρέτισε όλους τους υπαλλήλους. Το απόγευμα, επισκέφθηκε τον Ιερό Ναό Αγίου Ιωάννη του Θεολόγου στο Tenafly, NJ. Εκεί συνομίλησε με νέους Ελληνοαμερικανούς πάνω σε θέματα ελληνοαμερικανικής ταυτότητας, κουλτούρας, παιδείας και παράδοσης. Το απόγευμα της Δευτέρας ο Σεβασμιώτατος χοροστάτησε σε δοξολογία προς τιμήν του στο Ναό του Tenafly, NJ, ενώ ακολούθησε επίσημο δείπνο που διοργανώθηκε από το Μητροπολίτη Νέας Ιερσέης κ. Ευάγγελο. Το δείπνο O Αρχιεπίσκοπος Κρήτης Ειρηναίος με μέλη τηε Παγκρητικής και τον τον Ιερέα Κωνσταντίνο Καλογρίδη στον Καθεδρικό Ναό του Αγίου Δημητρίου στη Jamaica, NY. ήταν χορηγία του κ. Σταύρου Αντωνακάκη και της κ. Μαρίας Μακροπούλου και των οικογενειών τους, στη μνήμη των γονέων τους, μακαριστού Ιερέα Ιωσήφ Αντωνακάκη και της αείμνηστης Πρεσβυτέρας. Η οικογένεια Αντωνακάκη έχει πολύχρονους δεσμούς με τον Αρχιεπίσκοπο, καθώς ο Σεβασμιώτατος ήταν ο πνευματικός τους δάσκαλος κατά τα νεανικά τους χρόνια στην Κρήτη. Την Τρίτη 8 Δεκεμβρίου ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος παρεκάθησε στο ιδιωτικό γεύμα του ζεύγους Μανουσάκη στο εστιατόριο «Ανθός» του κορυφαίου σεφ Μιχάλη Ψιλάκη. Το γεύμα, στο οποίο παρεκάθησε και ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Δημήτριος, καθώς και άλλοι αξιωματούχοι, έδωσε την ευκαιρία συζήτησης για τους τρόπους ενδυνάμωσης των δεσμών μεταξύ της Ιεράς Αρχιεπισκοπής Κρήτης και της Παγκρητικής. Το απόγευμα της ίδιας ημέρας, ο κ. Ειρηναίος εγκαινίασε την Έκθεση των Εικόνων, μαζί με τον Έλληνα Υπουργό Πολιτισμού και Τουρισμού, κ. Παύλο Γερουλάνο. Στις μεθεόρτιες εκδηλώσεις των εγκαινίων, που έλαβαν χώρα στο ξενοδοχείο St. Regis της Νέας Υόρκης, παραβρέθηκαν πολλοί επώνυμοι από τους χώρους των γραμμάτων, των τεχνών, της επιστήμης, της διπλωματίας, των επιχειρήσεων, και της πολιτικής. Η ΠΕΑ εκπροσωπήθηκε από τον Πρόεδρο και την κυρία Μανουσάκη. Κατά την τελετή εγκαινίων, ο Πρόεδρος του Ωνασείου Ιδρύματος, κ. Αντώνης Παπαδημητρίου, μαζί με τον Υπουργό κ. Γερουλάνο, εξήραν την προσωπικότητα, το ήθος και τον οραματισμό του Αρχιεπισκόπου Ειρηναίου. Επίσης, επισήμαναν τη σπουδαιότητα της ευκαιρίας παρουσίασης των εικόνων σε ένα ευρύτερο κοινό, προκειμένου να θαυμάσει την εκλεκτή αυτή Έκθεση. Δυστυχώς, οι πολλές εκδηλώσεις προς τιμήν και για την υποδοχή του Σεβασμιωτάτου που είχαν προετοιμαστεί από το Γιάννη Μάνο, 1 ο Αντιπρόεδρο της Παγκρητικής και την Επιτροπή του για τις επόμενες δύο μέρες στο Σικάγο αναβλήθηκαν λόγω κακών καιρικών συνθηκών. Έτσι, ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Ειρηναίος δεν μπόρεσε να μεταβεί στη μεσοδυτική πολιτεία, και, συνεπώς, ολοκλήρωσε το ταξίδι του επιστρέφοντας στην Ελλάδα την Πέμπτη 10 Δεκεμβρίου 2010. Κατά την επίσκεψή του, όσοι είχαν την ευκαιρία να δουν και να ακούσουν το Σεβασμιώτατο βίωσαν μία εμπειρία μεταμόρφωσης. Είναι ένας άνθρωπος με βαθειά πίστη, μεγάλη ταπεινότητα, και άνευ όρων αγάπη για το συνάνθρωπο. Η ΠΕΑ αισθάνεται τεράστια ευγνωμοσύνη και τιμή να έχει φιλοξενήσει τον Αρχιεπίσκοπο και να έχει δεχθεί τις ευλογίες και την υποστήριξή του.
