Epiphany - Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral Tarpon Springs, Florida + Sunday, October 9, 2016 St Symeon the New Theologian, October 12
FATHER JAMES MESSAGE The Fall is important to me, as there are many personal life events that occur during this season: my birthday, wedding anniversary, name day and ordination. It was at my ordination that I was charged with the words from St. John s Gospel, As the Father has sent me, so I send you. (20:21) Holding the Body of Christ in my hands was symbolic that I have the sacred responsibility to follow Christ in the path of the disciples and work in His earthly vineyard, the Church. There are many stories we hear about people who follow Christ and continue His work. I m sure you could tell me a story or two about modern day discipleship. But what does it mean to follow Christ today? We all know it means to abide with Him in Church, in the Sacraments, in prayer and in study. Yet it means so much more than this; it means the time you spend in Church and in prayer affects everything you do during the week. It means that you take Christ with you into your homes, into your work, into your marriage, into your everyday relationship with everyone you encounter. It means to abide in the Bride and the Bridegroom, the Church and Christ, spiritually making the Church a real part of your life. In this way you become a true contemporary disciple of the Lord! Will you abide with the Bridegroom Christ to make real His love in the world and to help the Church, as His voice, bring the message to the community? It is the responsibility and mission of the body of the Church -- which is you -- to continue the His work. The Church, however, cannot do this without your support of time, talent and treasure the three Ts. We support the work of the Church, spiritually and financially because we are from God, and all we have is from God, and we give back to Him what is His! This is called STEWARDSHIP! It can help shape us in a way that we can experience God s grace, love and communion in the present. The stewardship program of St. Nicholas has seen some growth over the years, and we thank you for your support and value your participation -- but we need to do better. Doing better reminds me of a church building that was crumbling and needed remodeling. During the sermon, the priest made an impassioned appeal looking at the richest man in town who attend this church. At the end of the sermon, the rich man stood up and announced, Father, I will contribute $1,000.00. Just then, plaster fell from the ceiling and struck the rich man on the shoulder. He promptly stood back up and shouted, Father, I will increase my donation to $5,000.00, but before he could sit back down, plaster fell on him again, a larger chuck of plaster fell on his head, as he hollered, Father, I will give $25,000! This prompted someone to shout out, Hit him again, Lord! Hit him again! Sometimes we all need to be hit on the head to get the message. As I look at the ceiling of our Cathedral, I see severe water damage than needs to be repaired. Maintenance costs! If the A/C is not working in the buildings, it would be unbearable to attend worship and programs, given the semi-tropical region in which we are located. Utilities cost! If there would be no programs of the parish, you would lose interest. Programs cost! How blessed we are with our ministries, extended youth programs and especially the Philoptochos outreach, to visit the sick, to clothe the homeless and to feed the hungry. Outreach costs! As we grow spiritually, we need to grow, also, in financial support of the Bride of Christ, the Church. Soon, St. Nicholas Cathedral will launch its 2017 Stewardship Support System with the theme based on the words from St. John s Gospel, so I send you and you become the voice of Christ in a changing world. Although you don t hold the Body of Christ in your hands, as I did at my ordination, you hold Christ within you each every time you receive Him in Holy Communion and, also, have a sacred responsibility. As disciples and stewards of Christ, don t stop or diminish your support of His Church, but, abide in Him and become His voice in the world.

EPISTLE II Corinthians 6:1-10 B rethren, working together with him, then, we entreat you not to accept the grace of God in vain. For he says, "At the acceptable time I have listened to you, and helped you on the day of salvation." Behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation. We put no obstacle in any one's way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, but as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: through great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, beatings, imprisonments, tumults, labors, watching, hunger; by purity, knowledge, forbearance, kindness, the Holy Spirit, genuine love, truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; in honor and dishonor, in ill repute and good repute. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true; as unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and behold we live; as punished, and yet not killed; as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing everything. GOSPEL Luke 7:11-16 A t that time, Jesus went to a city called Nain, and his disciples and a great crowd went with him. As he drew near to the gate of the city, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow; and a large crowd from the city was with her. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, "Do not weep." And he came and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, "Young man, I say to you, arise." And the dead man sat up, and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother. Fear seized them all; and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has arisen among us!" and "God has visited his people!" Saints and Feasts of the Week EULAMPIUS & EULAMPIA THE MARTYRS Saints Eulampius and Eulampia (died 310) are 3rd-century Christian martyrs. Τhey were brother and sister and natives of Nicomedia and were executed during the reign of Emperor Maximinus II Daia. Eulampius was arrested by the Roman authorities during an attempt to buy supplies for Christians who were hiding in caves on the outskirts of Nicomedia. After Eulampius was whipped, his sister Eulampia was arrested after she identified herself by emerging from a crowd to embrace and comfort him. Eulampius and Eulampia were executed the next day. Τwo hundred soldiers, moved by the courage of the two siblings, converted to Christianity and were themselves martyred. SYMEON THE NEW THEOLOGIAN Saint Symeon became a monk of the Studite Monastery as a young man, under the guidance of the elder Symeon the Pious. He later struggled at the Monastery of Saint Mamas in Constantinople, of which he became abbot. After enduring many trials and afflictions in his life of piety, he reposed in 1022. Marveling at the heights of prayer and holiness to which he attained, and the loftiness of the teachings of his life and writings, the church calls him "the New Theologian." Saint Symeon reposed on March 12, but since this always falls in the Great Fast, his feast is kept today.
THANKING GOD As Orthodox Christians, we are called to a new way of seeing things a new way of life. Stewardship is obedience to the greatest commandment to love the Lord with all your heart, soul, mind and strength. We are called to bring ourselves and others to commit our lives to Jesus Christ in such a way that leads us to the joy of knowing him personally and profoundly. Thus, the question is not, How much do I give to stay in the club? or What are the dues? The real question we need to ask ourselves is How do I thank God for my many blessings? LEAVE THE REST TO GOD You cannot do everything, but you can do something. God wants you to do your best and leave the rest to him. Saint Theofan said, Exert all your strength, but rest your concern for success on God. The Lord doesn t expect any more from us than what we have to offer. But He does expect us to be faithful and that we do our very best for Him. We do our best and leave the rest to Him.
