Church Etiquette When attending Divine Services we all have the responsibility of maintaining proper decorum and atmosphere in the church. The very first thing to keep in mind is that we are to be at Divine Services on time. The church is the House of God. Reverence and good manners are required at all times. No irreverent or irrelevant conversations should go on in the Narthex or in the church proper. There are certain times during the Divine Services when no one should be moving about, or entering the church, or being seated at a pew. Wherever a person happens to be at these moments, he or she should stop and stand reverently until the proper moment to be seated. These times are: 1. During the Doxology, while the priest is censing. 2. During the Small Entrance - The procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gospel. 3. When the priest censes the Altar, icons, and congregation throughout the Divine Liturgy. 4. During the reading of the Epistle and Gospel. 5. During the sermon. 6. During the Great Entrance - the procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gifts. 7. During the recitation of the Creed and Lord s Prayer (Our Father). 8. During the Consecration of the Holy Gifts. (Se Imnoumen) 9. During Holy Communion. To receive Holy Communion the faithful should come forth from the side aisles and exit via the centre aisle to return to their pew. 10. When receiving any sacrament of the church, use your baptismal/chrismation name. 11. During any special services such as Memorials or blessing of the loaves, special doxologies, etc. The general rule is that whenever the priest is outside the Holy Altar either with the censer or for giving a blessing, there should be no movement in the church. Also, we remind everyone that we should attend the Divine Liturgy and all services of divine worship from the beginning. Please remember that Parish Council members are obligated to maintain order and decorum in the church during worship. Please try to understand us. Cooperate with us. Τhe priests are here to serve you. Your cooperation in following these regulations will help us greatly in offering you assistance in all your spiritual needs. 14
Thoughts from our Parish Priest 18
Thoughts from our Parish Priest Beloved, As we enter Lent, is it even more important now to come to church regularly. However, every Sunday of the year is just as important as Easter Sunday. Christ resurrected during the early hours of Sunday. We do not know the actual time of His Resurrection, since no one saw Him at that moment, but it was certified when the Myrrhbearing women went to the tomb to anoint the body of Christ with perfumes. Thus, Sunday is the first day of the week, the day of the Resurrection of Christ. If Christ conquered the dominion of death on a Saturday, on a Sunday He certified to all His Resurrection, that He is the conqueror of death and the devil. Moses did not call the first day first, but One Day. Interpreting this, Basil the Great says that holy Sunday, on which day the Lord resurrected, is called the One Day in order to lead our minds to a sense of the future eternal life. Now Sunday is a type of the future age, but then it will be in itself the eighth day. If one thinks that the weekly cycle symbolizes the entire time of a persons life, and Sunday is a type of the future eighth age, then it is a single day. Basil the Great calls Sunday "the first-fruit of days" and "having the same origin as light". On Sunday, the first day of creation, light was made. On Sunday, the first day of regeneration, the light of the Resurrection appeared, which is the same Light of Transfiguration and Pentecost. The human nature of Christ eliminated mortality and corruptibility, as we will see below. Sunday is also called a holy and chosen day, because all the great Despotic events happened on it. According to the Fathers, the Annunciation to the Theotokos, the Birth of Christ, the Resurrection, the basic great Despotic events, occurred on a Sunday. And the Second Coming of Christ, and certainly the resurrection of the dead will also happen on this day (Saint Peter of Damascus). This is why Christians give such importance and weight on the day and seek to make it holy, because on this day the sudden Second Coming of Christ will take place. For all these reasons Saint John of Damascus celebrates on the day of Pascha: "On this chosen and holy day, the first of the Sabbaths, the royal and supreme, the festival of festivals and celebration of celebrations, we bless Christ unto the ages." It is humbling to think that the Church every Sunday with this wonderful hymn celebrates the Resurrection of Christ. Thus, besides the annual Pascha there is also a weekly Pascha, the socalled small Pascha, the luminous day of Sunday. I wish you all a blessed Lent and a blessed Pascha. 19

Church Iconography Program Beloved in Christ, As you can see our iconography program is moving well. There are only two large murals left that have not been donated. At this point, all the spaces on the bottom halves of the walls for individual saints have been filled. There are still opportunities to donate, as we are changing the small icons on the iconostasis (temblon) of our Altar, since the current ones have been aged and darkened. There are still some that are available. For a list of those icons, please contact me directly. The price for a scriptural scene (upper half of the walls) panel is $9,500. The price of the icons on the iconostasis is $2,500. You can also make a general donation toward the iconography of the church, as many people have done already. Another option is donating an icon as a group. If you have any questions, please feel to contact me. In Christ, Fr. Kosta Tsiolas New Testament icons Old Testament icons 22
