Church Etiquette When attending Divine Services we all have the responsibility of maintaining proper decorum and atmosphere in the church. The very first thing to keep in mind is that we are to be at Divine Services on time. The church is the House of God. Reverence and good manners are required at all times. No irreverent or irrelevant conversations should go on in the Narthex or in the church proper. There are certain times during the Divine Services when no one should be moving about, or entering the church, or being seated at a pew. Wherever a person happens to be at these moments, he or she should stop and stand reverently until the proper moment to be seated. These times are: 1. During the Doxology, while the priest is censing. 2. During the Small Entrance - The procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gospel. 3. When the priest censes the Altar, icons, and congregation throughout the Divine Liturgy. 4. During the reading of the Epistle and Gospel. 5. During the sermon. 6. During the Great Entrance - the procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gifts. 7. During the recitation of the Creed and Lord s Prayer (Our Father). 8. During the Consecration of the Holy Gifts. (Se Imnoumen) 9. During Holy Communion. To receive Holy Communion please come up the middle aisle, children first, and return to your seats via the side aisles. 10. When receiving any sacrament of the church, use your baptismal/chrismation name. 11. During any special services such as Memorials or blessing of the loaves, special doxologies, etc. The general rule is that whenever the priest is outside the Holy Altar either with the censer or for giving a blessing, there should be no movement in the church. Also, we remind everyone that we should attend the Divine Liturgy and all services of divine worship from the beginning. Please remember that Parish Council members are obligated to maintain order and decorum in the church during worship. Please try to understand us. Cooperate with us. Τhe priests are here to serve you. Your cooperation in following these regulations will help us greatly in offering you assistance in all your spiritual needs. 11

CHILDREN IN THE DIVINE LITURGY AT ST DEMETRIOS GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH To the parents and grandparents of our young children, may we suggest Relax! God put the wiggle and curiosity in children; don t feel you have to suppress it. All are welcome! Sit somewhere where it is easier for your little ones to see and hear what is going on - even if that means you sit at the front. They tire of seeing the backs of others heads. We know how hard it is to have small children in Liturgy. Please don t be discouraged. We love you and want you here. Quietly explain the Liturgy to your children: The Small Entrance The Gospel (the Good News) coming into the world The Epistle and Gospel Readings Our message for the day The Sermon/Homily The clergy speaks about the Bible readings, the Saints, and the Holy Days The Offering (Anaphora) Bowing to our King and offering Him our gifts, that He may change them into His Body and Blood and offer them back to us 14

CHILDREN IN THE DIVINE LITURGY AT ST DEMETRIOS GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH Holy Communion Christ is in us and we are in Him Sing the hymns, pray, and voice the responses with the chanters and the choir. Children learn liturgical behaviour by copying you. Remember that we are here to worship Christ. If you have to temporarily leave the service with your child, feel free to use our crying room, but please come back when your child calms down. As Christ said, Let the children come to Me. Also, we encourage you to visit the church with your children on days when there is no service, so you can explain to them a few things about the church. To the members of our Community: The presence of children is a gift to the Church and a reminder that our Community is growing. Please welcome our children and give a smile of encouragement to their parents. Remember that the way we welcome children in the Church directly affects the way they respond to the Church, to Christ, and to one another. Let them know they are home! It is up to us to either encourage our children and young families or chase them away. 15

Thoughts from our Parish Priest Beloved in Christ: What those of us who were baptized as infants as well as those who were drawn to the Church at a later point can be assured of is that Orthodoxy has roots and indeed is rooted in Jesus Christ and His Apostles: Our ancient faith, worship, and practices have been handed down from generation to generation to lead us into eternal life in God s Kingdom. While this truth is appealing to us who remain spiritually active in the Church, the changelessness of Orthodoxy has turned off others, who choose to embrace a relationship with God that is more aligned with a post-modern view of life. This clash of views and values has created conflicts for many of our families, and our faithful are increasingly going to our priests and asking them to resolve these conflicts by revisiting our core beliefs and practices. As Orthodox Christians we were taught and directed to preserve pure and undefiled the faith that Christ delivered to His Apostles and which we have received: Moreover, we were told and we believe that we will give an account for this at the Second Coming. One of the greatest challenges for us as Orthodox Christians in the new millennium is that, when we try our best to continue the Faith we received, we are often criticized as irrelevant, out of touch, outdated. And as we struggle to strike a balance between fidelity to Christ s Church and compassion toward the people (just like us) that He came to save, we can easily be thrown off-kilter. We understand that our Lord s teachings, our Church Traditions, our holy canons and our theology require our obedience and our knowledge and education: When we do not know or change what has been handed down to us, our egoism can lead us on the path away from God and toward the idolatry of our times namely, the worship of self. The tides of secularism and godlessness continuously beckon our Church to conform, and quite honestly many of our Church members have been enticed by the so-called enlightenment of this age: We validate our new way of thinking as we disperse what we call the ignorance of the dark ages and we approach our Orthodox Church in the same way. Just because our culture is more informed about sanitation and protection, does this mean that we risk catching something when we receive the Body and Blood of Christ with a common spoon? Are our practices, restrictions and beliefs about Holy Communion really out of touch or insensitive, or are they there for the spiritual protection of the people? Are we Orthodox wrong because we do not believe in cremation, or abortion, or cohabitation, or divorce without a valid reason, or because we uphold marriage in the way God established it in Paradise? Are we alienating, excluding or chasing a new generation away (or have we already done so a while back) because the world has changed and the Orthodox Church has not kept up with the tides of change? But Jesus has not changed and neither should His Church which He established for our salvation: We Christians should not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of our mind 18

Thoughts from our Parish Priest (Romans 12:2)! As Orthodox faithful, we are called to approach Christ and live a manner of life that is separate from this fallen world and as such we should never compromise the salvation of God s people for the sake of fleeting relevance. This is truly a challenge, but we can succeed when we remain faithful to Christ, and teach our children to do the same by making their spiritual education (Church School) and ours a priority, and not an awkward afterthought. I wish you all a blessed summer. May God protect you wherever you decide to vacation. Don t forget God and His Kingdom, wherever your holidays take you. With nothing but love for you in Christ, Fr. Kosta Αγαπητοί εν Κυρίω, Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

Thoughts from our Parish Priest

Church Iconography Program Dear Members and Friends, our Iconography project is moving well. What is left is the north wall of the church (Old Testament figures), as well as the upper row of icons for the Iconostasis. All the remaining icons will be installed, but some of them have yet to be donated. The original prices of the icons have not changed. The price for an individual saint (lower half of the north wall) is $2,500. The price of the icons on the iconostasis is $2,500. Remember you can also make a general donation toward the iconography of the church, as many people have done already. Another option is donating an icon as a group. Church School Programs for Kids & Adults: Ages 3 to University years. When: Sundays, after Holy Communion 11:45-12:30 p.m. in the MHCC classrooms. WHY DOES MY TEENAGER NEED CHURCH SCHOOL? Many parents have some mistaken assumptions about how much their teens need Church School. Some believe that their children already know "Bible Stories". Some believe that because their children attend "Christian" or "Catholic" schools that they are getting a good understanding of religion. Some believe that just bringing their children to church on Sundays is enough to give their children a thorough grounding in the Orthodox Christian faith, both as to belief (Orthodoxy) and praxis (living our faith). I'd like to address these thoughts. "My children already know Bible stories. We read them at bedtime when they were growing up." As Church School Director, I have seen, and heard, and tested our children. Their Bible "story" knowledge is abysmal. Most of our older (grades 4-6 and up) students are unfamiliar with even the general plot line of these "stories". Moreover, they do not see these "stories" as applying to their faith and life. Jonah? Whale? Daniel? Lions? Most cannot put those together, and as for applying them to their faith, it's not possible. They lack the tools entirely. Some students DO remember their Bible "stories", the stories they learned as children, without any understanding of what they mean, and how important they are to understanding our faith, and have no sense of using them as any form of guidance through life, and many do not see, at all, that there is any question of doing so. Daniel. Lions. Jonah. Whale. What has that got to do with being a teenager today? NOW, as teenagers, is the time for them to hear the reasons behind the Bible stories, the actual Scripture that they now have the intellectual development to understand and apply, provided someone teaches them. These days, sadly, we can probably count on the fingers of one hand the number of families with teens who do any form of worship at home. Families do not prioritize prayer, and certainly not Scripture. Maybe Yiayia will teach them. Or something. Bring your teens. They will hear about the relevance of their faith to their life. Talk to your teens. Engage them. Pray together. Read Scripture together. For those who would like more information on how to do this, please speak to Fr. Kosta or to Victoria Marckx "My children attend "Christian" or "Catholic" schools so they understand religion." To this, I can only say that the Orthodox Faith is a faith to be LIVED. To be BREATHED with every breath, no matter what one does in life. Moreover, it is the richest of faiths, the true faith, the faith the Apostles received from Christ Himself. Protestant and Catholic schools have no understanding of this faith. Moreover, many actually deplore it, and try to undermine it in every possible way. Ask your average "sola scriptura" Protestant what they think about the Fathers, icons, and the Orthodox Church itself. Most will actively try to convince you that you are wrong, and will quote Scripture that your children do not know, in order to "prove" the Church wrong. With no grounding, as above, there is a real danger that your children will believe them. Many Orthodox ADULTS do not understand that the Protestant Bibles used in these schools lacks several books that Protestants removed at the time of the Reformation. Catholic teachings are no better. Catholicism is not "The Orthodox Church with a pope". We share no more than 40% of our beliefs with Catholics. Again, your children are being 26

Church School encouraged to attend Mass and receive communion in school. They know no reason why they should not. Catholic pew books encourage Orthodox Christians to do so. They never question it. When taught that all religions are the same thing, and having no grounding in what the Orthodox Church teaches and believes, will they remain Orthodox? PRACTICING Orthodox Christians, who have a true, deep, rich knowledge of and love for their Faith? Not a chance. Our children need ORTHODOX THEOLOGY, LINKED TO ORTHOPRAXIS. They are not getting it at home, or at school. Maybe they get it at Yiayia's...maybe not. They need to be in Church School, so that, at least, they know they are missing out on understanding something vast and incredible, that is more important than anything else. "Taking my children to church on Sundays is enough to give them a thorough grounding in the Orthodox Christian Faith." No. It is not. No matter what you think, it is not. Especially when your children are not there from the beginning. Most of what makes each day different from the others is the hymnography of Vespers and Orthros. The changeable portions of the Divine Liturgy are over at the Small Entrance with the Gospel. Parents who come so late they miss that are robbing their children of any understanding of what is going on around them. As Orthodox Christians we live in Kairos as well as in Chronos, and our Church feasts and fasts are an organic ebb and flow throughout the year; an underlying current of timeless living in the cycle of the ecclesiastical year, with prayers and readings and feasts and fast that enrich our lives and heal our souls. My heart breaks for those children and parents who never feel the power of Great Lent, because they never, ever, come to the full cycle of services. Compline is missed. Pre-Sanctified Liturgy, in all its awesome power and solemnity, that gives chills to those present...is missed. Akathists...missed. Canon of St. Andrew of Crete, which brings tears with its beauty and power and ability to touch our souls and turn them to repentance...missed. And then to add to it all, in people come, after the Gospel on Sunday, missing, again, the "point". Then, they say "but it's always the same." No, it isn't. You just missed it, your children missed it, and, moreover, you don't know that you DID miss anything. And that is the sad part. You don't know you missed something HUGE, something VITAL, and if YOU don't know it, neither do your children, because you can't teach them. Maybe Yiayia can. But Yiayia cannot describe what has to be experienced, anymore than a description of being on a roller coaster can convey what it feels like to be on that roller coaster. These things of our faith must be fully experienced. Even if someone DOES bring the children to these services, they need to be explained. Children and teens need to know what they are seeing, why it is different, and what it means to them. Do they understand why we worship the way we do, with incense, and vestments, and icons? Do they understand the structure of the Liturgy? Of the readings? Of the feasts and fasts? Do they understand the Sacraments, and what it means to live so that they have no compartments to put "Church" in, among the bigger compartment that they believe is "Life", but just one, seamless, compartment, labelled "Striving Towards Theosis"? Again, most do not. This is why parents, who are answerable to God for their stewardship of the children they were given, need to make it a true priority to bring their children to church, on time. To bring their children to Church School. To pray at home, to fast at home, as their children's ages and health permit. To show, in everything they do, that Church is important. And most do not. Imagine showing up for sports training every fifth class, or trying to run a marathon after bingewatching TV for three days straight. Let's talk about what would happen if a child attended school only once in every five classes, and that child was then considered "educated". How about work? For all you parents who work...please tell me what your boss would say, if you were to show up an hour or more late, every day, skip work whenever, and break nearly every rule they had. Then tell me why you think that sports, or school, or work, are more important than the ONE THING that is most important...preparing ourselves and our children for the 27

Church School Kingdom. Yet, we treat that most important thing, helping our children understand and live a sacramental life in the Church, like it is an optional extra. We show by every single thing we do that Church does not matter. Someone has a party on Sunday morning? "Sorry, we can't make it, we go to Church." Cruise during Lent? "Sorry, wrong season let's look at dates after Pascha". Party all night on Saturday? Late Date Night? "Sorry, no, you need to be able to get up for Church." Sure it may make for complaining kids, but it will at least show them that YOU find Church important. Parents make sure they send their children to the best schools, and when their children are young, they teach them that school is important...the early bedtime because it's a school night, the preparation of homework and studying before playing, the whole "making sure the backpack is packed with everything the child needs to have a successful day.", the rush out the door, testimony to the importance of being on time for school and work. Church? No, we don't need to be even close to on time. 20% of the liturgy is enough. 20% on the 20% of days we attend, that is. We send them with empty backpacks, in a spiritual sense. No preparation in prayer, no understanding of where in the Church year we are, or what we are doing, no sense of why it is important, no sense of spiritual self-control, and very little sense of anything else. This does not make for mature Orthodox Christians, for thoughtful spiritually mature Christians who can look at society and say "NO, this is wrong" and who can avoid temptation and sin, not by sheer good luck, but because they can actively see it, and understand it, and avoid it. Our children cannot evangelize anyone who asks, because they cannot give what they, themselves, do not possess. These children will leave the Church, or will marry in it, but be unable, themselves, to share their faith with a spouse...to keep the "Little Church" as just that. So, our faith and its richness will be lost, for lack of understanding, and for inability to live their faith. With September comes a new Ecclesiastical Year. Resolve to start it by having a talk with your children of all ages, about how this is important, and how they need to be in Church, and in Church School, from three to University. Yes, you WILL get groans...but, you know what? There is not a parent who has raised a child without hearing "I don't want to go to school! School is stupid/boring/irrelevant! Can't I stay home today? Why do I have to do homework?". Take a deep breath, parents, and say what you do each time they complain about going to school. "You have to go, it's important." And it is. Being able to apply and live their faith in the world they are part of is the most important thing, ever. REMINDER: Church School ends on June 10, 2018. Please return your registration packets by June 10, 2018, so that we can adequately prepare by ordering curriculum materials over the summer. As you know, our Metropolitan Sotirios wants all our children to attend Church School, and the materials he has chosen are produced by, and ordered from, the United States, so we need to order in plenty of time to ensure that what we need is available at the start of classes. May God keep us all under his care and watchful eye. Rev. Father Konstantinos Tsiolas Parish Priest Victoria Marckx Director, Sunday School 28

Greek School The 2017/2018 school year came to an end with our Greek School Graduation and Closing Ceremony on Saturday, May 26th. We congratulate all the students for their commitment and hard work. Their accomplishments are great and we are extremely proud of them all! The Order oh AHEPA generously donated a monetary gift to the nine students graduating this year. Thank you AHEPA for your support! The celebration was also an opportunity to say a farewell to our Grade 1 teacher, Patty Golas. Patty was an asset to our teaching staff and an excellent teacher. We thank her for her years of service and support. She will be missed. In her place, we are excited to introduce Agapi Ortaxidou as the new grade 1 teacher. We would like to welcome her to our team and look forward to working with her. In addition, earlier this year we said good bye to Fotini (Tina) Katsikeros-Fultcher who ended her term as Yiayia Gogo. Tina was much loved and respected by her parents and students and her departure has left a void at the school. Depending on registrations, we will also be looking for a new Yiayia Gogo for September to lead our pre-schoolers. If you love children and have a passion for Greek language development, please forward your resume or a letter of interest to Athena Dinos at athena2@mymts.net. We are also saying goodbye to our Parent Association President, Marilena Constantinides. Marinela and her team did an amazing job organizing the volunteers and fundraising for the school this year (and previous years). Tuition income only covers 65% of the teacher salaries or 60% pf the total cost of running the school. Fundraising is a critical part of ensuring the school is not a burden to the community. We thank her and her team for the hard work she has done. Her replacement will be announced in September. The 2018-19 Greek School year begins SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 8th, 2018 at 9 am. Registrations are now being accepted at the church office. Take advantage of the early registration discount by submitting your registration on or before May 31, 2018. Moments with the Elders In today's issue will feature a remarkable woman of God, Evlambia Romanidou born in Aravisso Cappadocia in 1895. She was raised in a pious family. Her childhood was extremely painful because at the age of 12 years old she witnessed the cruel execution of both parents. In her great devastation she turned to heaven and loved God and His church with all her strength. In the world she was a poor orphan, but spiritually she was rich having the protection of the Theotokos. Many times she told the nuns that she was taken by her hand and guided by our Lady thus spared from many dangers. She loved to pray and read her Bible getting up at midnight to say her prayers and be close to God. Her favorite saying was that, "at midnight you stand under open heaven". After the war in Asia Minor she came to Pireas, Greece where she was married and had a son Ioannis who later became a priest. Life in Greece was very harsh and the family immigrated to Boston U.S.A. where she worked alongside her husband. After his death, she offered to work as a seamstress in the Monastery of the Transfiguration of our Lord and prepared herself for the monastic life. Along with her son the priest they returned to Greece where she was ordained and devoted her life to prayer. Upon the son's request she kept her name Evlambia. Once she learned that her son-in-law in New Zealand was not Orthodox she came to visit and not only she brought him to the faith but, without any financial support she built the first Orthodox Church in the City of Christchurch, second largest city in that land. God was everything to Evlambia, she trusted Him all of life. She lived in the monastery till 1980 foretelling her death and the events after that to the sisters. She was a devoted spouse, mother and nun. She was humble and obedient and she prayed all of life to have a Christian ending without shame. The Lord granted her wish. May she intercede for our beautiful Community always!! With the love of Christ. Debby Vlahos 40
