THE CHILD S BOOK IN GREEK, BEING A SERIES OF ELEMENTARY EXERCISES IN THE GREEK LANGUAGE. BY ASAHEL C. KENDRICK, PROFESSOR OF THE GREEK LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE IN MADISON UNIVERSITY HAMILTON, N. Y. : P U B L I S H E D B Y S. C. G R I G G S. NEW YORK : MARK H. NEWMAN & CO

Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1847, by S. C. GRIGGS, In the Clerk s Office of the District Court of the United States for the Northern District of New York. S. W. B E N E D I C T, Ster. and print., 16 Spruce Street, N. Y.

PREFACE. A WORD or two, by way of introduction to this little book, must suffice. The Greek language is the noblest of all languages ; its literature, to say nothing of its almost unrivalled excellence, is the fountain whose streams have irrigated the whole field of modern letters. Why should it not be more widely and deeply studied, and why should not the utmost facilities be furnished for its acquisition? Why should it not be commenced at an age which will enable the pupil to attain such a mastery over it, as will lend to the perusal of its authors the highest pleasure and profit? And in order to smoothe the way, why may not the progressive system be adopted, which shall pause a long time upon the simpler elements, and initiate the pupil by slow degrees into those parts which are more abstruse and difficult? And why may not such a book be prepared for youth of a more tender age, and enable them to deposit the elements of Grecian culture among the very rudiments of their education? To effect this is the design of this little book. It is intended for the youngest pupils, and, on the principle of oral repetition, aims to give them a practical command over some of the simpler forms and constructions of the language, without hindering them with grammatical rules. Its province

PREFACE. is limited ; it conducts the pupil over only a given portion of the field ; but within its limits every object is to be distinctly and accurately surveyed, and indelibly impressed on the memory. The pupil should not leave the book until he or she can translate every Greek sentence into English, and every English sentence into Greek, and retranslate the sentence thus translated. It can be taught by any one who knows no more of Greek than is comprised within these Lessons, although, of course, not to so good an advantage as by a competent scholar. But the author would suggest that many parents may find the teaching of these Lessons to their children an easy and pleasant method of commencing or reviving an acquaintance with that noble tongue. Should these introductory lessons be favorably received, the author will soon follow them with another book, constructed on the same plan, and designed to lead on pupils from the point where the present leaves them.

KENDRICK S INTRODUCTION TO THE G R E E K L A N G U A G E. AN INTRODUCTION TO THE GREEK LANGUAGE, CONTAINING AN OUTLINE OF THE GRAMMAR, With appropriate Exercises, FOR THE USE OF SCHOOLS AND PRIVATE LEARNERS. BY ASAHEL C. KENDRICK, Professor of the Greek Language and Literature in Madison University. SECOND EDITION, REVISED AND ENLARGED. PRICE 62½ CENTS. EXTRACTS FROM CRITICAL NOTICES OF THE WORK. From the Christian Reflector, Boston, Dec., The skill and ability of the author as one of the first Greek scholars of the age are conspicuous throughout this much needed work. A proof of its acceptance is found in its having so soon reached a second edition. From the New York Recorder, Boston, Dec., As an elementary work, it is now superior to anything hitherto prepared for the American student. After a particular examination, and thorough knowledge of its contents, we feel confident that it cannot fail to be extensively used and eminently useful.

From the Christian Review, March, This excellent Introduction by PROF. KENDRICK, has attained an extensive and well-earned reputation. It teaches Greek thoroughly and philosophically, and indicates in the author a praiseworthy degree of skill in elementary knowledge, and in the power of instruction. A student commencing the study of Greek with such a manual, we are confident will make great progress, and from its faithful use will reap the highest advantage. From the Christian Chronicle, Philadelphia. We feel assured that the work will subserve the cause of classical learning. On the whole, we prefer it to any of the numerous Introductions to the Greek that we have examined. I regard PROF. A. C. KENDRICK s INTRODUCTION TO THE GREEK LANGUAGE, especially the revised edition, as an invaluable aid in teaching the elements of that language. The simplicity and clearness with which the grammatical analysis is conducted must command the admiration of all those who know the inconvenience of teaching from works destitute of these qualities. BARNAS SEARS, President of Newton Theological Institution. I have not only read PROF. KENDRICK s INTRODUCTION TO THE GREEK LANGUAGE, but have had good opportunity of judging of its adaptedness to the purposes of elementary instruction. From such knowledge I would unhesitatingly express the opinion, that for beginners in the study of the Greek language it is superior to any work of the kind that has ever come under my inspection. TAYLOR LEWIS, LL.D.

Professor of the Greek Language, &c., University of New York. I regard this book as better adapted to introduce the student to a speedy and philosophical knowledge of the Greek language than any other elementary work that has issued from the American press. J. S. MAGINNIS, D.D., Professor of Biblical Theology, Madison University. Published, and for sale by S. C. GRIGGS, Hamilton, N. Y. For sale by NEWMAN AND CO., 199 Broadway, N. Y. M A D I S O N U N I V E R S I T Y. S. C. GRIGGS has recently published a Lithograph, showing a part of the beautiful village of Hamilson, with the University buildings in the distance. Size of the engraving, ten by fourteen and a half inches ; on paper of the first quality, and executed in the highest style of the art. Price 25cts. ; five copies for $1,00. It is one of the most accurate and beautiful impresssions of the kind that we have ever seen. The main avenue, including the public square ; the new Baptist Church ; the late residence of Fanny Forester, and now of her parents, near that of Dr. Kendrick ; the University buildings on an eminence in the back ground, all strike the eye as when surveying the scene. Christian Reflector, Boston.
