2 INTRODUCTION This service manual describes the latest technical information for the IC- HF/ MHZ TRANSCEIVER, at the time of publication. CAUTION NEVER connect the transceiver to an AC outlet or to a DC power supply that uses more than the specified voltage. This will ruin the transceiver. CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION - RECEIVER CIRCUITS ANTENNA SWITCHING CIRCUITS (CTRL UNIT) RX signal from the antenna connector [ANT] (J) or [ANT] (J) is passed through the antenna switch (RL), current detector (D), tuner switches (RL and RL), RX line switches (RL and RL) and, and then applied to the UNIT. ATTENUATOR CIRCUITS ( UNIT) The RX signal from the CTRL UNIT is passed through or bypassed the attenuator circuit (RL, R R), depending on the setting. PRELIFIER CIRCUITS ( UNIT) The RX signal from the circuits is applied to or bypassed the preamplifi er. 12 ST RX IF CIRCUITS (RF-A UNIT) The RX signal from the UNIT is passed through the, which removes unwanted signals ( MHz and higher), and then applied to the st RX IF mixer (Q Q) to be mixed with the st RX LO signal (.. MHz) from the PLL UNIT, resulting in the. MHz st RX IF signal. The st RX IF signal is amplified by the st RX IF (Q) and passed through one of the st IF fi lters (FI; FL-, or optional FL- or FL-), which has different passband widths, according to the IF fi lter setting. The fi ltered st RX IF signal is amplifi ed by the RX IF s (Q and Q, Q), and then applied to the nd RX IF circuits. ND RX IF CIRCUITS (RF-A UNIT) The st RX IF signal from the st RX IF circuits is divided into two paths, and then each signal is applied to the nd RX IF mixers (the image reduction mixers; D/D) to be mixed with the nd RX LO signal (. MHz) from the PLL UNIT, resulting in the khz nd RX IF signal. The image reduction mixer removes image frequency components by using two LO signals which are degrees phase-shifted from each other. The nd RX IF signals are independently amplified by the buffers (Q/Q) and IF s (IC). These amplifi ed nd RX IF signals are degrees phaseshifted and combined by the combiner (IC), and then applied to the MAIN UNIT. The converted digital audio signal is applied to the DSP (IC), and demodulated and processed. The demodulated signal is applied to another CODEC (IC) to be converted into analog AF signal, and then applied to the buffer amplifi er (IC). 13 RX AF CIRCUITS (CONNECT UNIT) AUDIO OUTPUT FROM THE SP/HEADPHONES The AF signal from the demodulator circuits is applied to the AF (IC), through the squelch gate (Q). The amplifi ed AF signal is applied to the Voltage Controlled Amplifi er (VCA; IC) to be adjusted in level (=audio output level). The level-adjusted AF signal is applied to the AF power (IC), through the mute SW (Q) and AF SW (Q). The amplified AF signal is passed through the AF mute switch (Q), and then applied to the internal speaker or external speaker jack (J), or the amplified AF signal is applied to the headphones jack (JACK BORD: J). RX AF CIRCUITS - TRANSMITTER CIRCUITS TX AF CIRCUITS (MAIN UNIT) The audio signal from the microphone (MIC signal) is applied to the MAIN UNIT, through the MICROPHONE CONNECTOR (MIC BOARD; J), and then applied to the Voltage Controlled Amplifi er (VCA; IC). The applied MIC signal is amplified by the MIC, and adjusted in level (=MIC gain) by the VCA circuit. The level-adjusted MIC signal is passed through the MIC line SW (IC), amplifi ed by the AF (IC), and then applied to the modulation circuits, through the two s (IC). The MIC signal from the accessory socket [ACC] on the rear panel, is directly applied to the AF (IC), through the MIC line SW (IC). 15 TX LIFIER CIRCUITS (PA-A UNITS) The TX signal from the UNIT is sequentially amplifi ed by the pre-drive (Q), drive (Q, Q), and power (Q, Q). The amplifi ed TX signal is applied to the TX fi lter circuits. TX FILTER CIRCUITS (PA-A UNIT) The amplified TX signal from the power (Q, Q) is passed through one of s, depending on the transmitting frequency, to remove harmonic components contained in the TX signal. The fi ltered TX signal is applied to the CTRL UNIT. TX LIFIER AND TX FILTER CIRCUITS HF ANT HF ANT ANTENNA TUNING AND SWITCHING CIRCUITS (CTRL UNIT) The TX signal from the PA-A UNIT is passed through detection circuits on the CTRL UNIT, before being applied to the antenna connector [ANT] or [ANT]. Refering to the detected parameters, the tuner CPU (IC) controls the tuning networks on the NETWORK UNIT, to match the transceiver and connected antenna. SWR DETECTION CIRCUIT The forward wave is rectified by D at the current detect transformer (L). The rectified voltage is amplified by the DC (IC), and then applied to the A/D port of the tuner CPU (IC). The refl ected wave is rectifi ed by D at the current detect transformer (L). The rectified voltage is amplified by the DC (IC), and then applied to the A/D port of the tuner CPU (IC). RL D IC IC CURRENT ANTI DET RL REACTAE DETECTION CIRCUIT The TX signal which is picked up at the current detect transformer (L), and the TX signal which is picked up by C, C and R, are rectifi ed by D and D, and amplifi ed by C-MOS IC (IC).. The resulting signal of phase comparison is rectifi ed by D and D, and composed and amplified by IC, then applied to the A/D port of the tuner CPU (IC). And these voltages are the same when the connected load (=antenna) is matched to Ω. Thus the difference of these voltages represents the resistance components. By comparing the difference of these voltages, the transceiver detects the resistance components. The detected resistance components are buffered by Q and amplifi ed by IC, and then applied to the A/D port of the tuner CPU (IC). CURRENT DETECTION CIRCUIT A portion of the TX signal is picked up by L, rectifi ed by D, and applied to IC to be level-compared with the voltage from the SWR detection circuit. When the resistance of connected load (=antenna) is less than Ω, the TX signal is bypassed the NETWORK UNIT, through the tuner compulsorily switches (RL and RL), to protect the circuit on the NETWORK UNIT from refl ected waves. -

16 - FREQUEY SYNTHESIZER (PLL UNIT) REFEREE FREQUEY OSCILLATOR CIRCUIT The crystal oscillator (X) generates the MHz reference frequency signal. This reference signal is applied to the Local Oscillator (LO) circuits, through the buffer (Q) and (L, C ). RD TX LO CIRCUIT The MHz reference signal from the crystal oscillator (X) is doubled by the doubler (Q, L, L), resulting in the MHz reference clock signal. Using the MHz reference clock signal, the khz rd TX LO signal is directly generated by -bit DDS (IC) and D/A converter (R R). The generated khz rd TX LO signal is passed through the (L, C, C), buffer (Q), LO SW (D), (L L, C, C, C, C, C), and then applied to the MAIN UNIT. ND TX LO CIRCUIT The MHz reference signal from the reference frequency oscillator circuit is doubled by the doubler (Q, L, L) to extract the MHz of nd harmonic component. The MHz signal is applied to the MAIN UNIT as the nd TX LO signal, through the buffers (Q and Q). The nd TX LO signal is amplified by the LO (MAIN UNIT: IC), and then applied to the nd TX mixer (MAIN UNIT: D). ND RX LO CIRCUIT The MHz reference signal from the buffer (Q) and the khz signal from the rd TX LO circuit is mixed by the nd RX LO mixer (D), to generate the nd RX LO signal. The nd RX LO signal is fi ltered by the crystal fi lter (FI), and then applied to the RF-A UNIT as the nd RX LO signal. The nd RX LO signals which are degrees phase-shifted from each other, is applied to the nd IF mixers (D and D), through the buffers (IC). ST RX LO/TX LO CIRCUITS The MHz reference signal from the reference frequency oscillator circuit is amplifi ed by Q, and applied to the PLL IC (IC) as the reference frequency signal. The PLL IC (IC) generates the. MHz master clock signal, using the applied MHz reference signal as the reference. The generated. MHz master clock signal is passed through the buffer (Q) and (L L, C C), and then applied to the DDS IC (IC). Using the applied DDS master clock signal as the referece, the DDS IC generates the st RX/TX LO signal. The generated st RX/TX LO signal is passed through the (L, C, C), MCF notch fileter (FI), (L L, C C or L L, C C, C; depending on the operating frequency), and amplifi ed by the LO (IC). The amplifi ed signal is applied to the RF-A UNIT, through the (L, L, C C), HPF (L, C ). The st RX/TX LO signal is passed through the harmonic filter (RF-A UNIT; L L, C C or L L, C C or L, C, C), and amplified by the LO (Q), and then applied to the st RX mixer (Q Q) or st TX mixer (D), through the (L L, C C) and LO SW (D, D).
